Unreleased Apple product sighted in California - no images (yet)
There’s definitely an unreleased Apple product looming - and while that bald statement is pretty much an eternal truism, product marketing plans for this one are advanced, a report this morning explains.
Apple has already filmed an ad for this new product, and, as you’d expect, security was tight on the film set yesterday. “Because the product they were advertising hadn’t been released, members of the group didn’t release any information, or allow any photographs,” a local report claims.
The ad was shot at a Californian restaurant - a beautiful 1940's style diner - called Jax on the Tracks, which was chosen by a location scout. Filming

Microsoft has 60 days to quit selling Word or cough up some cash
A court in patent-friendly Eastern Texas has issued an injunction stating Microsoft will have to stop selling and demonstrating Microsoft Word within 60 days. At issue are the rights to XML in reading and writing XML, DOCX, and DOCM files. Presumably, this affects Mac Office 2008 customers as well.
The judge ruled that Microsoft Word’s XML systems violate patents by Toronto-based i4i Inc and specifically their 1998 XML patent #5,787,449. MS will have to pay i4i about $290 million in damages.

Report claims China Unicom to offer iPhones from next month
Apple has solved its Chinese puzzle, sealing some deal with carrier, China Unicom, under which the latter firm will begin selling iPhones in China next month, the latest information shows.
Zhou Youmeng, deputy general manger for the China Unicom Guangdong branch, confirmed this news in chat with SinoCast Daily Business Beat yesterday, the report suggests.

Trip Chowderly says: $899 OLED Smartbook coming by end of the year

Samsung YP-R1 portable media player hits the FCC
It's unfortunately not the (presumably) Tegra-based YP-M1 that Samsung has just debuted in South Korea, but the company's YP-R1 player still isn't too shabby as far as basic PMPs go, and it's now finally popped up at the FCC. Adobe dropping PowerPC support for Creative Suite
Adobe on Wednesday announced that future versions of Creative Suite will only run on Intel-based Macs, and not on the older PowerPC systems. Atom-based Inhand FireFly SBC promises netbook-level performance at a "fraction" of the power
SBCs (or single board computers) may not always be the most exciting components around, but it looks like InHand Electronics has managed to break out from the pack a bit with its new FireFly board, which the company claims is the world's "smallest and most power efficient full-function Atom-based SBC." Oh, Windows. You inform and entertain us. You are inescapable, and your Start menu is full of items relevant to our productivity. You move us. Sort of. To be honest, we're not sure what sort of state this fair planet of ours would be in without the ruggedly functional operating systems the folks at Redmond have handed to us over the years, and while Windows Vista might have proved that Microsoft wasn't invincible, it did nothing to demonstrate that Windows as an idea -- and for most, a necessity -- was at all in jeopardy.

Xbox 360 Elite replacing Pro at $299 price point August 30th?
We've already had a pretty clear indication that the Xbox 360 Elite would be replacing the current middle-of-the-road Pro model as Microsoft winnows its SKU options down to two, and a new Meijer ad obtained by Kotaku has now further backed up rumors of the switchover, and seemingly confirmed that that, as expected, the Elite will also be occupying the Pro's $299 price point. Sony shows quick-charge batteries with 4x capacity
Sony on Wednesday announced it has released new olivine-type lithium iron batteries that have four times the capacity of conventional batteries from competitors. What's more, Sony claims the batteries can be charged to within 99 percent of their capacity in just 30 minutes. We didn't expect too many fireworks from Microsoft and Nokia's joint teleconference this morning, and, well, we didn't get any. As expected, Office Mobile is coming to Symbian, along with Office Communicator Mobile, SharePoint, and Microsoft System Center, and the two companies also said they'll be working on "future user experiences" for Nokia customers. Don't get too worked up about that, though -- Nokia said it was "deeply committed to Symbian," and that "there are no such plans" to work on a Windows Mobile device. So much for that. Report claims China Unicom to offer iPhones from next month
Apple has solved its Chinese puzzle, sealing some deal with carrier, China Unicom, under which the latter firm will begin selling iPhones in China next month, the latest information shows.
Zhou Youmeng, deputy general manger for the China Unicom Guangdong branch, confirmed this news in chat with SinoCast Daily Business Beat yesterday, the report suggests.

Apple hiring Green Data Center Exec, Olivier Sanche from Ebay
In a post titled Apple Recruits eBay Data Center Executive Olivier Sanche, Can Apple Change Data Centers the way they changed cell phone and media players?, Dave Ohara from the Green Data Center Blog reports that a key eBay data center executive is shifting over to Apple, perhaps to oversee the construction of its new North Carolina facility.

Hey, remember that seemingly random patent case from May in which a federal jury awarded a company called i4i Ltd $200 million in patent damages against Microsoft? Things just got worse for Redmond: the judge in the case today issued a permanent injunction against sales of Word 2003, Word 2007, and any future versions of Word that can open .xml, .docx, or .docm files containing "custom XML." It's not the kind of thing you'll probably want to brag about winning, of course, but, according to new research conducted by the OECD, people in the US, Canada and Spain come out on the top of the heap when it comes to high cellphone bills. The research was conducted by categorizing bills into three usage categories, with the mid-range being 780 minutes per year of voice calls, and 600 SMS per year. Darf Microsoft Word zukünftig nicht mehr verkaufen?
Wie jetzt bekannt wurde, hat ein texanisches Gericht Microsoft untersagt, in den USA zukünftig Microsoft Word 2003 oder Microsoft Word 2007 zu verkaufen, zu bewerben oder Support für diese Produkte zu liefern. Dies gilt auch für zukünftige Produkte mit der Fähigkeit, .DOCX- .XML- oder DOCM-Dateien zu öffnen. Der Grund: Das kanadische Unternehmen i4i hat seine Klage durchgesetzt, Microsoft hätte ein Patent des Unternehmens aus dem Jahre 1998 verletzt, in dem sich i4i eine Methode sichert, XML-Dateien zu erstellen und zu bearbeiten. i4i vertreibt den Tagless Editor, mit dem sich XML-Inhalte innerhalb von Microsoft Word erstellen lassen. Bereits im Mai war Microsoft zu einer Zahlung von 200 Millionen US-Dollar an das Unternehmen verurteilt worden.

Researchers develop infrared vegetable harvesting robot, to the disgust of children everywhere
Researchers at England's National Physical Laboratory are working on a device that uses a modified microwave measurement system, terahertz and far-infrared radio frequencies, and a clever cauliflower detection algorithm to let robots "see" beneath -- and harvest -- crops that current technology cannot. So far, the imaging system has been successfully demonstrated in the lab, sparking the interest of at least one UK lettuce grower, and it looks like a product could be commercially available as early as next year. Microsoft has 60 days to quit selling Word or cough up some cash
A court in patent-friendly Eastern Texas has issued an injunction stating Microsoft will have to stop selling and demonstrating Microsoft Word within 60 days. At issue are the rights to XML in reading and writing XML, DOCX, and DOCM files. Presumably, this also affects Mac Office 2008 customers as well.
The judge ruled that Microsoft Word’s XML systems violate patents by Toronoto-based i4i Inc and their 1998 XML patent #5,787,449. MS will have to pay i4i about $290 million in damages.

There’s definitely an unreleased Apple product looming - and while that bald statement is pretty much an eternal truism, product marketing plans for this one are advanced, a report this morning explains.
Apple has already filmed an ad for this new product, and, as you’d expect, security was tight on the film set yesterday. “Because the product they were advertising hadn’t been released, members of the group didn’t release any information, or allow any photographs,” a local report claims.

Microsoft hat mit der Veröffentlichung des Remote Desktop Client for Mac in Version 2.0.1 eine Sicherheitslücke geschlossen. Angreifer konnten damit über einen manipulierten Server auf dem Remote Desktop Client schädliche Programmanweisungen einschleusen und so den Computer unter ihre Kontrolle bringen. Auch der Aufruf entsprechend präparierter Webseiten konnte laut Microsoft zu einer Einschleusung schädlicher Programmanweisungen führen.

Bandspeed bangs Apple, Sony, Nintendo, alleges patent abuse
Apple, Sony and Nintendo are in the legal crosshairs once again this week, as a WiFi network company, Bandspeed, has slammed litigation down against the three tech firms, alleging patent infringement.
Bandspeed describes itself as, “the leader in next-generation WiFi management, providing access point (AP) solutions that make possible mission-critical WiFi voice, data and video applications for the business mass market.”

Apple gives multi-touch trackpad magic to Boot Camp boys and girls
Apple last night shipped an essential software update for Boot Camp users, boosting performance of the Apple Multi-Touch trackpad when running Microsoft Windows XP and Windows Vista on a Mac computer using Boot Camp.
The update’s for Boot Camp users with 13-inch unibody MacBooks released in late 2008 or any MacBook Air model released since late 2008.

Apple dreht Werbespot für geheimes Produkt
Apple hat am Dienstag einen Werbespot zu einem neuen Produkt gedreht, das noch nicht veröffentlicht wurde. Diese Informationen veröffentlichte die US-amerikanische Zeitung Sierra Sun. Word: Microsoft muss Verkauf in den USA einstellen

RealNetworks verliert wichtigen Prozess um DVD-Kopiersoftware
Ein amerikanisches Bezirksgericht hat eine einstweilige Verfügung erlassen, die den Verkauf der DVD-Kopiersoftware RealDVD von RealNetworks bis auf Weiteres verbietet. Richterin Marilyn Patel entschied, dass die Software gegen amerikanisches Urheberrecht verstößt. Die Entscheidung ist ein Erfolg für die Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), der Vertretung der amerikanischen Filmindustrie.

Intel veröffentlicht Firmware-Aktualisierung für zweite SSD-Generation

Apple gives multi-touch trackpad magic to Boot Camp boys and girls
Apple last night shipped an essential software update for Boot Camp users, boosting performance of the Apple Multi-Touch trackpad when running Microsoft Windows XP and Windows Vista on a Mac computer using Boot Camp.
The update’s for Boot Camp users with 13-inch unibody MacBooks released in late 2008 or any MacBook Air model released since late 2008.
A tech support note from Cupertino says:

E-Plus verlangt Gebühr bei Nichtnutzung einer Prepaid-Karte

Apple, Sony and Nintendo are in the legal crosshairs once again this week, as a WiFi network company, Bandspeed, has slammed litigation down against the three tech firms, alleging patent infringement.
Bandspeed describes itself as, “the leader in next-generation WiFi management, providing access point (AP) solutions that make possible mission-critical WiFi voice, data and video applications for the business mass market.”

Microsoft darf in den USA kein Word mehr verkaufen
Wie Golem berichtet, wurde Microsoft in den USA gerichtlich untersagt, weiterhin Microsoft Word mit XML-Unterstützung zu verkaufen. Auslöser ist ein Patentrechtsstreit mit dem kleinen kanadischen Unternehmen i4i. Dieses hatte im Mai erfolgreich gegen Microsoft geklagt, weil Microsoft mit der XML-, DOCX- und DOCM-Unterstützung das US-Patent 5.787.499 verletzt. Kostenloses DTP-Programm Scribus nativ für den Mac

Fanta-Codes reduzieren T-Mobile-Rechnung
Mit der noch bis 31. Dezember laufenden Fanta-Aktion Handy leer? Fanta her! (vom iPhone: http://m.fanta.de/) lässt sich die T-Mobile-Rechnung drücken. Timo schreibt uns, dass er für das Einsenden von zwei Deckelcodes auf seiner Rechnung 1,74 Euro gut geschrieben bekam, also gibt’s pro Code 87 Cent. Widget zum Verwalten von iPhone-Apps
Mit dem AppScreen-Widget erhält man einen Zugang zu allen iPhone-Apps aus der iTunes-Bibliothek über das Dashboard. Das Widget erlaubt es, zu allen Apps Kommentare zu hinterlassen oder ein YouTube-Video einzustellen oder anzuschauen. Der Sinn dahinter ist, dass man seine App-Übersicht, Kommentare und Videos mit anderen AppScreen-Nutzern teilen kann. Hierfür muss man einen Benutzernamen angeben und die Sharing-Funktion nutzen. So kann sich eine Community für App-Empfehlungen etablieren, entsprechende Übersichtslisten gibt es bereits unter shareappscreen.com.

Patchday: 19 Sicherheitslücken in Microsoft-Produkten

Richter untersagt Verkauf von Word wegen Patentverletzung
Der texanische Richter Leonard Davis hat eine dauerhafte Verfügung gegen Microsoft erlassen. Apple und Labels: Wettlauf um neues Albumformat
Laut der britischen Times basteln die vier führenden Musiklabels Sony, Warner, Universal und EMI derzeit an einem eigenen neuen Download-Format für Alben, das in Konkurrenz zu der gerüchteweise laufenden Apple-Entwicklung Cocktail steht.
Ziel beider Projekte ist es, den Online-Verkauf von kompletten Alben anzukurbeln indem der Käufer einen entsprechenden Mehrwert zum Einzeltitel erhält. Dies dürfte sich im Allgemeinen in Form von umfangreichen Beilagen wie PDFs, Grafiken und Videos darstellen, könnte aber auch exklusivere Boni wie beispielsweise Tickets für im Internet übertragene Live-Konzerte beinhalten. Apple hat erst letzte Woche erstmals ein Live-Konzert exklusiv für den iPod touch und das iPhone übertragen (wir berichteten).

Sprint bringing 4G to Maui, Charlotte, Austin, Boise
Sprint on Tuesday announced plans to expand its 4G WiMAX service to 17 additional cities in Hawaii, Idaho, North Carolina, Oregon, Texas and Washington. Snow Leopard goes Golden Master at build 10A432
According to MacPlus with additional confirmation from MacRumors, Snow Leopard 10A432 has gone Golden Master. While most developers haven't gotten their hands on this 10A432 version, someone has been testing it out at popular benchmarking site Geekbench using a MacBook Pro. Bankruptcy court blocks Psystar from delaying lawsuit
United States Bankruptcy Court Judge Robert Mark has granted Psystar's request for voluntary dismissal of its Chapter 11 proceedings, although the clone maker is restricted from submitting a similar filing for the next year. The judge also explicitly blocked the company from receiving an automatic stay if it chooses to pursue a Chapter 7 filing.

Sony admits defective NVIDIA graphics in VAIOs
Sony recently issued a statement of confession admitting it used defective NVIDIA graphics chips in 14 models of its VAIO notebooks, according to a Tuesday report. Kernel_task process taking up an inordinate amount of CPU
There have been many reports, especially with MacBook Air and other laptop owners, where the Mac OS X "kernel_task" process takes up a large amount of CPU when checked in Activity Monitor. When this happens, the computer may run slower and also may appear to be running hot as well.

Safari 4.0.3 erschienen
Originell ist einer der Fehler, die Safari 4.0.3 behebt und ungewöhnlich lang ist die Updatebeschreibung, zumindest für Apple-Verhältnisse. In dem 40,5 MB großen Update wurden Stabilitätsverbesserungen für Websites, die das neue Video-Tag (HTML 5) verwenden, vorgenommen. Die Anmeldung bei iWork.com sollte nun immer funktionieren und die Zeit des S/W-Webs ist endgültig vorbei, denn ein Fehler, bei dem Webinhalte schwarzweiß statt farbig dargestellt wurden, ist nun auch Geschichte.

Nokia and Microsoft to announce an "alliance" tomorrow -- what?
We're not sure what to make of this, but we were just invited to a joint Microsoft / Nokia teleconference during which the two companies will announce an "alliance." Yeah, there are some pretty wild possibilities there -- Nokia going WinMo? Redmond going Symbian? The creation of MaeWinMo? -- but considering the featured speakers are Stephen Elop, president of Microsoft's business division, and Kai Öistämö, Nokia's EVP for devices, we're guessing the real announcement will be something more pedestrian, like native Exchange support on Symbian or possibly that upcoming Atom netbook running Windows 7. Otherwise, hell -- Nokia would be supporting three different mobile OSs, and that seems just a little too crazy, even for Espoo. We'll see -- it all
