Archos posts product page for Clipper MP3 player
Archos has recently put up a product page for its entry-level Clipper MP3 player, which is due to compete with the iPod Shuffle. The device integrates 2GB of flash memory, with no way to expand it. File support is limited to MP3 and WMA music, with a claimed battery life of 11 hours.

Neue iPods wahrscheinlich am 8. oder 15. September
Auch dieses Jahr darf man im September mit neuen iPods rechnen, wie bereits berichtet, stehen Updates für den iPod touch und den iPod nano an. Der Touch sollte - so die Gerüchte - neben einer Kamera auch ein Mikrofon verpasst bekommen und damit nicht nur als Diktiergerät einsetzbar sein, sondern auch mit der beim iPhone neu eingeführten Sprachsteuerung kompatibel werden und vielleicht bei entsprechender Softwareausstattung auch als Wi-Fi-Telefon taugen. Möglicherweise spendiert Apple ja sogar dem iPod nano eine Kamera.
Sicher dürften auf jeden Fall die obligatorischen Speichererweiterungen sein, beim Touch scheint eine Aufstockung auf maximal 64 GB nicht unwahrscheinlich, das Blog Daring Fireball (gewöhnlich gut informiert) nennt gleich mal die Preise: 16/32/64 GB für 199/299/399 Dollar.
Bleibt nur die Frage nach dem Zeitpunkt der Präsentation. Hier schießen

CourseSmart releases eTextbook reader for iPhone
We have no idea who would choose an iPhone app over a real, honest-to-goodness textbook, but if you really want to spend marathon cram sessions hunched over a 3.5-inch display, a company called CourseSmart has just made its entire catalog available for viewing with its eTextbooks app. Certainly, it seems that the company's selection is nothing to sneeze at -- electronic access to over 7,000 titles from 12 publishers -- so if you're already using the service, additional on-the-go access to the books (as well as the handy search, notes, and bookmarks) might prove quite worthwhile. Rumored September event likely to omit tablet
Apple should indeed be holding a publicity event in September, but it will not highlight the company's rumored tablet computer, "very reliable" sources are said to claim. Debbie Downer Dalrymple: No Tablet until 2010
Jim Dalrymple, former Macworld Editor at Large and current CNET contributer says he's heard that there will be no tablet at the September event. The event will be typical music and iPods only. The iTablet, according to him, won't be revealed until 2010.
Very reliable sources familiar with the product have said speculation of the tablet being introduced during the September event are flat out wrong. The Apple tablet, they said, would not see the light of day until the first part of 2010.
Though Dalrymple seems pretty sure of himself, the beard has its doubts.

We're not sure why we didn't hear more about this way back at RIM's WES conference way back in May, but it was apparently mentioned by VP Antoine Boucher at the time that they're working on a Bluetooth-enabled watch. Furthermore, it's said to be more advanced than the models Sony Ericsson has put forth so far, featuring streaming audio (3.5mm jack on the watch, perhaps?) and Twitter / Facebook updates in addition to the usual things like caller ID and text messages. Lawsuit brings Apple, AT&T to task for iPhone MMS
A new class action lawsuit has accused Apple and AT&T of misrepresenting MMS availability on the iPhone, reports say. Filed in a Louisiana district court, the suit observes that Apple has heavily promoted MMS -- the standard means of sharing cellphone photos and video -- using print, TV, radio and the web. We're hearing "multiple sources" are now reporting that Apple is most likely planning a keynote event -- possibly for September 7th. There's also the requisite murmuring that one Steve Jobs may make an appearance -- though of course, there's also nothing more solid than wishes and fairy dust to back that one up. As far as possible product launches go, well, there have been significant whisperings about upcoming iPod / iTunes developments as of late, including the company's reported dealings with major record labels. Multiple music industry sources say Apple executives have told them the company is planning one of its famed keynote events for the week of Sept. 7.
The Internet is literally abuzz right now with speculation. The timing makes sense as the past four iPod events have been in early September (to get those back to school kids in a lather) but Monday would be unusual for Apple as they often go with Tuesday affairs.

Tablet split in to EDU version and video version?
Gizmodo took a call today from someone who claims to have held tablet prototypes in their hands and sat in on Apple meetings about the device. We'll just republish the good bits:
"The device, which I've held mock ups of, is going to have a 10 inch screen, and when I saw it looked just like a giant iPhone, with a black back— although that design could change at any time" they said, "with the same black resin back, and the familiar home button." That's obvious.
"But it will come in two editions, one with a webcam and one for educational use."
See? Apple isn't going to just cede the educational market to Amazon's Kindle.

Verizon announces AD3700 global modem from ZTE
So here's some interesting insight into the wild, rough-and-tumble world of wireless product launches: Verizon announced ZTE's AD3700 USB modem today, a product that gained FCC approval over five months ago, which means it's probably been getting a trial by fire on Verizon's test labs since then. You've gotta figure that ZTE was working on the prototype for many months before FCC approval, so all told, this launch is probably a culmination of a solid year of work, cash, blood, sweat, and tears. Apple iPhone more profitable than any other smartphone
Apple has the highest profit margin of any player in the smartphone industry - even though it doesn’t yield the highest revenue, this chart shows.
LG, Samsung, Nokia, and RIMM beat Apple to the revenue punch, but they don’t yield the same margins - closest player is RIMM with 20.7 per cent margin.
Interestingly, the cell phone handset industry yielded over $65 billion in the last 6 months. Of that, 9.7% was pocketed by the companies. It was recently announced that Apple received 32% of the total handset market's profits, equivalent to a whopping $2,038,000,000 - all through iPhone sales.

AT&T and Apple sued for lack of MMS capability
Frankly MMS is a dinosaur of a technology and won't be around in 5 years. It also enables Telcos to charge you for something that should be free. You can accomplish everything MMS does on mobile email so long as your recipient has email on their phone. Sure, not everyone does now, but they willsoon.
That being said, Apple and AT&T are being sued because the iPhone has yet to get MMS in the US - though it has been touted as a feature by both Apple and AT&T. AT&T has promised this feature (and tethering) by late summer. We are pretty Meh on the whole issue but were pretty sure a lot of you feel strongly about this. Here's the long version:

Microsoft Mac Office 2010 will be here December 2010...with Outlook
Microsoft just announced the next major version of Office for the Mac. It will be released in 16 months (!!) and have a (believe when you see it) almost Windows feature compatible version of OUTLOOK for Mac as a Cocoa app, which will replace Entourage.

Tablet split in to EDU version and video version?
Gizmodo took a call today from someone who claims to have held tablet prototypes in their hands and sat in on Apple meetings about the device. We'll just republish the good bits:
"The device, which I've held mock ups of, is going to have a 10 inch screen, and when I saw it looked just like a giant iPhone, with a black back— although that design could change at any time" they said, "with the same black resin back, and the familiar home button." That's obvious.
"But it will come in two editions, one with a webcam and one for educational use."
They continued to explain the device as something that would sit between an iPod/iPhone and a Macbook, and would cost $700 to $900

Nächstes Office: Entourage geht, Outlook kommt
Das nächste Office für den Mac verspricht ein größerer Entwicklungsschritt zu werden und es steht zwar noch kein Erscheinungstermin fest, aber Microsoft hat bereits in einer Pressemitteilung verbreitet, dass Outlook zukünftig Entourage ersetzen werden. Die MacBU verspricht, dass dahinter mehr stecken soll als ein Namenswechsel, das plattformübergreifende Arbeiten soll beispielsweise durch die Verwaltung von Informationsrechten erleichtert werden.

A slew of details have emerged on Apple's rumored tablet device, according to an anonymous source. Claiming to have sat on meetings regarding the product, the source says that it will indeed use a 10-inch touchscreen, and in many respects resemble an oversized iPhone. Lenovo IdeaCentre C300 unboxing and hands-on
Large screen nettops are somewhat of a mystery to us. Lenovo's latest, the all-in-one IdeaCentre C300, is certainly a looker on the outside, but the beauty of that screen real estate is hampered by a 1.6GHz Atom processor / integrated graphics unable to handle our internet streaming needs -- Hulu, Pandora, and Netflix were all but a wash. Still, it's pretty light and sturdy, and when powered on absolutely quiet and cool -- we watched four hours of a DVD with a minimum of stutter and little to no heat or machine noise. Xing meldet im ersten Halbjahr 35-prozentige Umsatzsteigerung

Dell refutes high Linux netbook return rates, but not customer ignorance
Microsoft is quite confident of its leadership status on the Netbook front, boasting earlier this year of 96 percent attach rate for Windows and making other, more recent claims of return rates on Linux netbooks that are "like four or five times higher" than their Windows equivalents. Hätte es 1986 schon das iPhone gegeben, hätte es neben Getränkeautoamten, Sattelschleppern und Küchengeräten in Stephen Kings Rhea M: Es begann ohne Warnung wohl ebenfalls die Menschheit attackiert. China Unicom taking order of 5 million iPhones?
China Unicom has ordered an extremely large number of iPhones for an initial wave of sales, says the International Business Times. Cameras with projectors? That's old tricks by now. Samsung wants you to know the new, hip differentiator in the point and shoot market is two LCDs -- one in the back like usual, and a 1.5-inch LCD in the front, right next to the lens, such as what you see with the new TL220 and TL225 (also known as ST500 / ST550, respectively). That should be good for making sure your self-portraits are just right, or alternatively, it can play "cute animations to capture kids' attention." Zune HD color options revealed in pre-order email
We already knew that the Zune HD would be available in five different colors, and a just sent out pre-order email has now given us our first (very small) glimpse of the options available. In addition to the standard black and silver (or platinum), it seems you'll also have your choice of blue, lime green, red / maroon, and a beige-y color of some sort, each of which can also be adorned with your choice of 10 exclusive Zune Originals designs. Apple hat in der Nacht auf heute das vierte Security Update dieses Jahres veröffentlicht. Das 10.1 MB grosse Update kann via Softwareaktualisierung oder auf apple.com geladen werden und steht dort für 10.5.8 sowie 10.4.11 bereit. Apple iPhone more profitable than any other smartphone
Apple has the highest profit margin of any player in the smartphone industry - even though it doesn’t yield the highest revenue, this chart shows.
LG, Samsung, Nokia, and RIMM beat Apple to the revenue punch, but they don’t yield the same margins - closest player is RIMM with 20.7 per cent margin.
Interestingly, the cell phone handset industry yielded over $65 billion in the last 6 months. Of that, 9.7% was pocketed by the companies. It was recently announced that Apple received 32% of the total handset market's profits, equivalent to a whopping $2,038,000,000 - all through iPhone sales.

Modder hacks PSP for DualShock 2 control, proves kids aren't worthless
Okay, so there's at least a sliver of a chance French modder Flasheur got his inspiration from an eerily similar mod last year that involved Sony's PlayStation Portable and an original DualShock controller, but hey, progress is progress. Apple beats off iTunes/iPod class action lawsuit
Apple has prevailed in a long-standing iTunes action which claims the company has acted monopolistically in the way iTunes works seamlessly with the iPod/iPhone family, and no other devices.
The complaint alleges illegal "tying" in violation of the Sherman Act, monopolization in violation of the Sherman Act, and violations of California's Cartwright Act, unfair-competition law, and Consumer Legal Remedies Act.
U.S. District Judge James Ware of the Northern District of California denied certification of a damages class in the suit, a decision which reflected the credibility of the expert witnesses fielded as part of the hearing which attempted to secure class action status for the case.

Patentrecht: Bandspeed verklagt Apple, Nintendo und Sony

Der kanadische iPhone-Anbieter Rogers hat mal wieder neue Hinweise auf ein iPhone 3GS mit 8 GB Speicherkapazität geliefert. Rogers hat schon einmal versehentlich ein solches Modell auf seiner Website gelistet und wieder entfernt. Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard ist so gut wie fertig
In der Nacht auf heute hat Apple allen berechtigten ADC-Mitgliedern (Apple Developer Connection) den Zugriff auf den neusten Snow-Leopard-Build freigeschalten. Der neue Build trägt die Nummer 10A432 und soll den Gold-Master-Status erreicht haben. Apple beats off iTunes/iPod class action lawsuit
Apple has prevailed in a long-standing iTunes action which claims the company has acted monopolistically in the way iTunes works seamlessly with the iPod/iPhone family, and no other devices.
The complaint alleges illegal "tying" in violation of the Sherman Act, monopolization in violation of the Sherman Act, and violations of California's Cartwright Act, unfair-competition law, and Consumer Legal Remedies Act.
U.S. District Judge James Ware of the Northern District of California denied certification of a damages class in the suit, a decision which reflected the credibility of the expert witnesses fielded as part of the hearing which attempted to secure class action status for the case.

Freenet steigert Umsatz um 152 Prozent
Freenet hat seine Bilanz für das zweite Geschäftsquartal 2009 (PDF) veröffentlicht. Demnach konnte der Büdelsdorfer Telekommunikationskonzern, der seit April unter dem Namen Mobilcom Debitel firmiert, seinen Umsatz gegenüber dem retrospektiv angepassten Vorjahreswert um 152 Prozent von 362,1 Millionen auf 912,6 Millionen Euro steigern.

Looks like Apple just punched up another $1.46 Billion in revenue. The International Business Times is reporting that Apple has come to an agreement with China Unicom to sell 5,000,000 iPhones in China.
According to the source, the deal would put the Chinese version of the iPhone at an average $293 price point and would not include subsidies to Apple which are common in other countries. They speculate that Apple is still getting over $100/ea in profit from this sale.
"The price of the 8G standard iPhone is set at about 2,400 yuan and the 16G may be sold at 4,800 yuan," said Yu Zaonan, general manager of the customer development department of China Unicom in Guangzhou.

Dell's Zino HD crams desktop parts into miniature enclosure
Confirmed specs are scarce, but we're taking the term "desktop parts" -- about the only info Dell will spill so far -- to heart. Hopefully this new Zino HD mini PC from Dell can live up to its name and kick the sometimes sluggish, laptop-inspired Studio Hybrid to the curb as Dell's home theater PC of choice. There's HDMI, eSATA and USB galore, so that's certainly a good start. Should ship sometime this fall.

Acer drops sales forecast for CULV-based ultrathins
Acer chairman JT Wang has admitted that the company's shipments of ultra-thin notebooks has not reached initial sales goals, according to the DigiTimes.
