Android 1.5 gets official SDK for native development
Java-based development within a specialized, optimized virtual machine is one of the founding principles of the platform that makes Android what it is -- but sometimes, you need a little more oomph and you've got to bend the rules to make that happen. Phase One, Leaf create new Leaf Imaging company
Maker of medium format cameras, digital backs and lenses, Phase One, along with Leaf Photography, which manufactures medium-format digital camera backs, on Thursday announced they have collaborated to create a new company called Leaf Imaging that has purchased assets of the Leaf camera business. CinemaNow launches Wii movie streaming service in Japan

The SSD market remains weak
DRAMeXchange which follows the market of the memory is quite naturally interested in that of the SSD that will become in future one of the largest users of chips. It is no surprise that in 2009 SSD discs only represent a tiny share of the total of the laptops sold, 1 to 1,5% (except for ultra portables that often have SSD of poor performance, and of small size).It will be necessary, according to those who made this study, to wait until 2011 for this market to explode. By then the chips engraved in 30nm will clearly lower the cost in GB of these discs, also the operating systems, Vista in the lead, will be optimized to benefit most from these discs by supporting in particular the function TRIM that avoids the degradation of the performances of the SSD with time.
In this case, and barring a miracle, the years of the hard drives with platters are now counted, a thing that would have been difficult to consider not so long ago.

SD cards at 30 MB/s
Sandisk has unveiled the first SDHC cards capable of being read and written at 30 MB/s
According to the manufacturer, they will be the fastest cards in the world. They will be available in capacities going up to 32 GB and will be intended to equip the compatible walkmans and cameras, at least those users with big demands.

iPhone 3G S triggers 400% surge in YouTube uploads
Mobile YouTube uploads have shot up dramatically with the release of the iPhone 3G S, Google claims. Whereas uploads have grown approximately 1,700 percent in past the six months, Google notes that figures rose 400 percent daily on June 19th, when the 3G S was launched in eight countries. Sony hints PSP may get non-game apps
Sony spokesman Al De Leon today teased that Sony is considering downloads of non-game software for the PSP. ASUS Eee Keyboard now on track for August launch
Last we had heard, ASUS' convention-busting Eee Keyboard was due to be released by the end of June but, as you may have noticed, it's now almost the end of June and there's still no Eee Keyboard in sight. ASUS has now finally come out and cleared up the situation, however, saying that the PC-in-a-keyboard / keyboard-in-a-PC is now due to be released sometime around the end of August. Sharp says ITC ban on LCD imports won't affect US consumers
We just spent some time talking to Sharp's reps about that ITC ban on its LCD panels, and while they certainly didn't sound happy about the ruling, they made it clear that it shouldn't have too much of an effect on US consumers -- all Aquos TVs and Sharp professional LCD displays that infringed the patent were taken off shelves last month and replaced with updated models. As you'd expect, the new displays have been re-engineered to workaround the Samsung patent in question, but here's where it gets confusing: the basic model numbers haven't changed. Japanese iPhone 3G S launches to smaller crowds

Gartner: PC numbers to drop 6% this year
Analysts at Gartner today warned that the computer industry is on track to ship 6 percent fewer systems this year than it did in 2008. PSPgo video hands-on quickie
Yeah, the PSPgo made the rounds at a little show you might've heard of called E3, but we tracked the thing down in the wilds of NY the other day, and thought you might like to see the wild slider action for yourself. We have to admit, the handheld looks better in person than it does in press shots, but only just barely. It's perfectly playable and comfortable to hold, but it almost seems a regression in design sense for Sony. In comparison to the PSP-3000, the PSPgo feels just a teensy bit lighter, but that's to be expected with the UMD drive kicked to the curb. At least it doesn't feel cheap. Because it isn't cheap. While we might gripe about the style choices of HP's consumer line, HP has done wonders for its "professional" image with the ProBook line. The new ProBook 4310s merely carries on that tradition, but it still cuts a nice figure in the flesh.While we normally like to play it safe on color choice, we have to say that the matte lid of the crimson version (pictured) really triumphs in a sea of gloss. BlackBerry Tour hands-on, wild sibling confrontation with Curve and Bold

Sony hints at "non-game apps" for PSP
We've been hearing rumors about a non-game app store for the PSP since the launch of the PSP Go, and it sounds like the wheels are turning -- in an interview with CNET, Sony's Al De Leon said that while PSP content "will mostly be games, there's an opportunity to look at non-gaming applications." Apples Codenamen für kleinere OS-Updates
Seit Jahren hat es sich durchgesetzt, Apples "Major Updates" mit Katzennamen zu betiteln. Was eigentlich nur interne Codenamen waren, wurde später zur offiziellen Produktbezeichnung. Seit Mac OS X 10.2 Jaguar begannen viele Anwender damit, nicht mehr die Versionsnummer zu nennen, sondern eben vom "Jaguar" zu sprechen. 10.0 trug zwar schon den Codenamen "Cheetah", 10.1 dann "Puma", damals wäre in den Foren aber noch nicht diskutiert worde

For the longest while, your options were highly limited in the waterproof / rugged point-and-shoot arena. In fact, it was arguably better to just buy a standard P&S camera and a waterproof casing for said camera than to worry over any of the standalone waterproof alternatives. iPhones surge to 69% of mobile web use in US
New data published by AdMob today showed that Apple's share of mobile web use has suddenly surged and now makes up more than two thirds of all mobile traffic in the US. In May, iPhone requests represented 69 percent of all traffic, a sudden jump from 59 percent the month before. By comparison, BlackBerries accounted for just 13 percent of traffic and Android phones represented 7 percent.

Panasonic starts locking out third-party batteries with new firmware
Kodak's already taken some steps to cut down on counterfeiting of its batteries, and it looks like Panasonic is now taking some fairly drastic measures of it own, which could leave some users of its cameras a tad unhappy. Apparently, the company has determined that some third-party batteries amazingly don't meet its own rigid safety standards, so it's now released a new firmware update that can detect said batteries and prevent them from working. At the moment, that only includes cameras that use DMW-BCF10, DMW-BCG10, or DMW-BLB13 battery packs (some sixteen cameras in all), but it seems safe to assume that this'll soon be standard practice on all Panasonic

Gartner hebt Prognose weltweiter PC-Verkäufe an
Gartner erwartet, dass die PC-Industrie 2009 274 Millionen Computer verkaufen wird, sechs Prozent weniger als im Vorjahr. iPhone 3GS: In Zukunft auch bei anderen Providern zu bekommen?
Das Vertragsverhältnis von Apple und T-Mobile läuft zum Ende diesen Jahres (im November) aus. Daher berichtet das manager magazin in der morgen erscheinenden Ausgabe (26.Juni 2009) bereits davon, dass in Zukunft wahrscheinlich das iPhone 3GS auch bei anderen Providern zu haben sein wird.
Ob diese Nachricht tatsächlich auch entsprechende Konsequenzen haben wird, bleibt abzuwarten. T-Mobile wird sich bemühen, den Vertrag zu erneuern und entsprechend Exklusiv-Partner zu bleiben. Ein Telekom-Sprecher sagte bereits dazu “Die Partnerschaft mit Apple ist langfristig. Daran ändert sich bis Ende 2009 nichts” - ist sich also über das nächste Jahr ebenfalls nicht sicher.

MS details Win 7 prices, free PC upgrade program
Microsoft this morning outlined its final pricing for Windows 7. Extending an olive branch to Windows XP owners refusing to upgrade to Vista, the company says it's allowing both these and Vista owners to pay $120 to upgrade to Windows 7 Home Premium, $200 to move to Windows 7 Professional, and $220 for Windows 7 Ultimate. Sony Ericsson complemented the T715 with the addition of a new Bluetooth headset useful for most phones. The VH310 is built for longevity with about 11 hours of continuous talk or 500 hours of standby. Comfort is also a concern as it ships with three different ear tip sizes and two different ear hooks to accommodate most wearers; at 10 grams it also shouldn't weigh too heavily when in place.

Microsoft just laid out the Windows 7 pricing grid for us, and here's the big takeaway: Vista and XP users will need to pony up $119.99 or $199.99 on October 22 to score their Windows 7 Home Premium or Professional upgrade, and those of you who want a full retail disc will need to roll up with $199.99 or $299.99, respectively. ZuneHD launch to coinside with next iPod touch launches
Gizmodo got their hands on some internal Microsoft docs which have put the launch of the Tegra-powered, OLED-screen having, iPod touch-competing ZuneHD at September 8th. IT will come in the very iPod touch and now iPhone like 8GB and 16GB varieties
A tipster just dropped off a few internal Microsoft docs that point to a September 8 launch of the Zune HD. In addition to that, the tipster says it's coming in 16GB and 32GB versions. All pretty logical.
We already knew that the HD has Nvidia's Tegra inside, which makes it a high powered, high performance device that can handle HD output and possibly some nice gaming. What we don't know is what the cost of the OLED screen and the cost of Tegra will make the final price. No word on that yet from the tipster.

iSuppli schätzt, dass sich die Herstellungskosten der 16-GByte-Version des iPhone 3G S pro Stück auf 178,96 Dollar (128,26 Euro) belaufen. AT&T adding new spectrum to help with high iPhone data usage in NY, SF

Android now capable of running Flash with a slower CPU than iPhone
Today, Adobe is demonstrating a version of Flash running on the HTC Hero, the recently released Android device on Tmobile. The demo seems to work fairly well which may be an important benchmark to Apple's iPhone and iPod touch owners.
As far as capability to run Flash (as opposed to desire), it would appear that the iPhone 3GS has more than the necessary hardware to do so. The HTC Hero uses an 528MHz ARM 11 based Qualcomm MSM7200A. This is roughly the same level of processor as the 2nd generation iPod Touch. iSuppli breaks apart iPhone 3Gⓢ parts costs
iSupply worked its magic on the new iPhone 3Gⓢ and found it only costs a few bucks more to manufacture than last year's 8GB iPhone 3G that it replaces. Interestingly, the iPhone they tore apart contained Flash memory from Toshiba where Apple generally gets its Flash from Samsung (and had a multi-Billion dollar up front deal with the vendor). The other three biggest changes were the new Arm Cortex Samsung processor, new autofocus 3-Megapixel camera and the Broadcom Corp. single-chip Bluetooth/FM/WLAN module. The latter replaces two chips.

AppleTV just got a somewhat significant update (2.4) allowing for new gesture support. Flick gestures can now be used to manipulate Apple TV's menu options. Top smartphones' Javascript speed compared
Tired of hearing how fast the iPhone 3GS is? Too badhere's yet another study of the browsing speed of the new iPhone 3GS and the new iPhone 3 OS. Medialets ran the SunSpider Javascript tests on three recent iPhones as well as the Palm Pre and the Android G1. The results are below (shorter bars are better).
This is a pretty clear indication that not only is Apple's new hardware fast, but the new 3.0 OS is also pretty helpful in speeding up Javascript.

iPhones in D ohne T-Möbel?
Nachdem sich T-Mobile seit dem Marktstart im November '07 der exklusiven Vermarktung des iPhone sicher sein konnte, sollen nun angeblich in näherer Zukunft auch weiterere Carrier das iPhone 3GS vertreiben dürfen. Dies berichtet zumindest das manager magazin in seiner aktuellen Ausgabe, die ab morgen (26.06.) im Handel erhältlich ist.
Die Redaktion des Gruner+Jahr-Business-Titels vermutet nachvollziehbar, dass in diesem Falle die Endverbraucher-Preise deutlich sinken werden. Beispielsweise O2 handele derzeit seine Partnerschaft mit Apple in UK neu aus und wolle bei der Gelegenheit gerne auch den deutschen Markt erproben. Ein Ende des Monopols erwartet das Magazin für November '09.

Aiport/Time Capsule 7.4.2 firmware update fixes disconnection woes
In a previous post, I explained how I had to downgrade my Time Capsule from firmware 7.4.1 to 7.3.2, since the newest firmware was causing repeated disconnections from the Internet and then made the device unreachable via the Airport Admin Utility. And Apple's forums where full of people suffering the same problem.
Well, rejoice! As we pointed out, Apple has released version 7.4.2 of the Airport/Time Capsule firmware. And, yes, I installed it and haven't experienced any trouble with connection or access to the device.
It took a rather long time, but at least they fixed it.

Matrox Adopts the mini DisplayPort
In a press release, Matrox announced 2 new Pro-oriented cards, aka M9138 and M9148. No, it is not graphic cards, they are dedicated to Pro users aiming to have several display plugged to the same computer. The fist card supports up to 3 monitor with 2560x1600 pixels definition (usually 30"), while the second cards can manage 4 displays.
So what about the title of this news? Well, Matrox decided to use the mini DisplayPort on those cards, the same port that Apple introduced in October 2008 when releasing MacBook models, so far tied to the gorgeous but expensive Apple Cinema display LED 24". So, now that a new company adopted mini DisplayPort, let's hope another manufacturer will finally release an adaptor mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort.

iPhone and iPod Touch Wireless Charging Device
The company WildCharge announced the future availability (in July) of a system to charge your iPhone and iPod Touch without requiring any cables.
The system is composed of a protective skin featuring the WildCharge contact module (little bulgy lower part on the photo) that makes electrical connection with the surface of the WildCharger Pad. Garmin issues patch to exorcise brick from 7x5 series GPS
It didn't take long for Garmin to get into gear, once it acknowledged the firmware update had ultimately brought ruin to its nüvi 7x5 series GPS units. The company's released a new software update that should provide a fix -- it should be available now via its WebUpdater. If you're one of those whose device won't even turn on anymore, there's also a support section online for requesting a return authorization to have it repaired under warranty. Microsoft rolls out Windows 7 packaging
We could swear we've seen this before, but nonetheless, Microsoft's Windows blog has unveiled what it's calling the official Windows 7's packaging -- as in, this it what we'll be seeing in stores when it launches this fall. It's apparently 37 percent lighter and has a 50 percent better econometrics score over the Vista box, which we can't help but draw mental parallels to the platform's overall performance and mindshare improvements. Microsoft unveils Hohm beta for overanalyzing your home energy usage
Since Google can't be the only multibillion-dollar technology company having all the home energy monitoring fun, Microsoft's jumping in with "Hohm" -- like a portmanteau of "Home" and "Ohm," get it?
