Sega-licensed "Retro Gen" might have you hunting for cartridges
Sega's already given its seal of approval to a few Genesis / Mega Drive-based handhelds, but never one like this new "Retro Gen" device from Innex, which makes use of actual, dust-collecting cartridges instead of just some mere on-board memory. Of course, not everyone has a stack of Genesis carts at their disposal (a sad state, indeed), so the handheld also apparently comes pre-loaded with 20 unspecified games, and you'll supposedly even be able to eventually load some "licensed ROMs" onto an SD card using a special cart. Catapult Aperture plug-in supports Camera Raw
Brushed Pixel has announced Catapult, a new Aperture plug-in designed to integrate external RAW photo converters. White iPhone 3GS reportedly overheats, turns a browner shade of white
Right after its launch, we noted the sundry problems reported by new iPhone 3GS owners, but this is the first time we've heard tell of this specific one and it seems like a doozy. It's unclear exactly what caused this, but what is apparent is an unattractive discoloration on the above handset. New high-end MacBook Air slower than older one?
The new high-end MacBook Air is paradoxically slower than its predecessor, a review of the system is said to expose. While the updated low-end Air has been made faster, as expected, the new 2.13GHz high-end is actually said to score lower on tests than its older 1.86GHz equivalent. The last-generation model wins out in 11 of 18 Speedmark tests, for an overall score of 179 as compared to 175.

PhotoFast outs CR-7100 microSD to CF card adapter

iJector makes 50-inch images from docked iPods
Lancer has recently introduced the iJector, a front-projector that lets users cast images up to 50 inches in size from their docked iPhone or iPod on a wall or screen. Despite the large screen size, the resolution is a lowly 557x234 pixels. The iJector's brightness is rated at 20 lumens, with the lamp said to last 30,000 hours. Amplified stereo audio will also be played back via the iJector.

Side Effects of the MacBook EFI 1.7 Update
The EFI Firmware 1.7 update has been a relieve for many new MacBook owners. However, it seems to created new issues for some users. Hereafter is a report from Thomas:
Some owners of the new MacBook Pro are experiencing problems following the firmware 1.7 update. My computer now randomly freezes, and HD access can be on hold for 20-30 seconds. Then the computer becomes almost not usable. However, everything is working fine when running BootCamp
I installed an application on my XP partition, and it allows me to read/write on my HFS+ volume, I also repaired my Macintosh HD partition. After rebooting in safe mode on my Mac partition, I can get till the welcoming step where account and password have to be entered; then it freezes so one needs a hard reboot.
According to my tests and investigation, it is still possible to boot from an external partition, however booting from the optical drive with a DVD does not seem to be working anymore I am not the only one having probl

Mac mini generating low profit margins for Apple
The latest Mac mini, at least in its entry-level design, is not an especially profitable product for Apple, says the analysis firm iSuppli. Philips debuts PowerSensor-equipped Brilliance monitor
Energy-saving monitors are hardly anything new, but Philips has taken things a bit farther than most with its new 22-inch Brilliance LCD, which packs a built-in infrared "PowerSensor" that can detect when someone's sitting in front of it. If it finds that it's been left by its lonesome, it'll dial down the brightness and cut power consumption by 50% -- all of which operates independently from the PC, so there's no compatibility issues to worry about. Zune HD rumor mill: $249, 720p movies, 64GB model down the road?
It's obviously a bit hard to put too much faith in Zune HD rumors when even Steve Ballmer himself can't keep things straight, but someone claiming to be a Software Engineer at Microsoft (who has also dropped Zune HD tips in the past) has now spoken at some length with Neowin.net, and provided plenty of speculation fodder in the process. The biggest of those purported details is word that the Zune HD will run between $249 and $280 for the base 16GB model, and that Microsoft is also apparently considering a 64GB model for further on in the model year in addition to the planned 32GB model. Corsair ships high-speed 128GB, 64GB SSDs
Corsair recently announced it has added two new products to its Performance Series solid state drive (SSD) family with the 128GB P128 and 64GB P64. Basically smaller capacity versions of the recently released 256GB P256, they offer the same 220MBps read speeds, with the P128 also sharing the same 200MBps write speed. Apple behind removal of Hottest Girls iPhone app after all
If there's one thing we can decisively say about iPhone users -- and everyone else, for that matter -- it's that they shouldn't see naked people, even if they want to. Ever. No porn in the App Store
Apple spokesperson Tom Neumayr told Macworld:
Apple will not distribute applications that contain inappropriate content. The developer of this application added inappropriate content directly from their server after the application had been approved and distributed, and after the developer had subsequently been asked to remove some offensive content. This was a direct violation of the terms of the iPhone Developer Program. The application is no longer available on the App Store.

Windows 7 could be sold on thumb drives, but probably not
As you know, Windows 7 pre-orders begin today (unless you're lucky enough to be in Europe, that is). This of course begs the question: what is a Win7-aspiring netbook owner to do? External optical drives are pretty kludgey, in our estimation, and trip to the Geek Squad? Out of the question. According to CNET, a "source" of some sort is goin' around saying that Microsoft is planning on making the OS available on USB thumb drives for the ultra-portable market, although we feel that such devices are best left to the college students who rely on campus computer labs -- or the occasional J.Lo album

MacBook Air 2009 is slower than 2008?
Ouch. Those numbers below have to hurt if you are in the market for a new high end MacBook Air. Macworld tested the new machines and found the high end 2.13GHz MacBook Air didn't perform as well as the previous high end 1.86Ghz machine with the same 128GB SSD. In fact, to them, it was noticably slower.
A lot of things could account for the speed decrease including: battery mangement, cheaper laptop parts, testing methods, etc. As I said in my Computerworld column when the Air was released, Apple is making significant sacrifices to make this machine razor thin.

Variable pricing leads to iTunes gift card lawsuit

Apple Store Hamburg nimmt weiter Formen an
Nach der Eröffnung des ersten Apple Stores in München kamen kurze Zeit später erste Detail zu einem weiteren Laden auf. Bald war klar, dass dieser in Hamburg entstehen wird. Palm says licensing webOS "not a religious issue"
Palm had its quarterly results conference call yesterday and although CEO Jon Rubinstein and CFO Doug Jeffries kept a pretty tight lid on the future product talk, they did say that licensing webOS to third parties isn't "a religious issue for us." New clients of Orange see red
Many readers have told us about a very aggravating problem after having bought a 3GS iPhone and having subscribed a contract with Orange. Several days after their purchase, they cannot still use their telephone.
The chip delivered by the operator is indeed still not activated. Note that this problem concerns only activations of new lines and not the people that are already customers and have kept the same SIM.

3Gbps firmware update interfering with MBP upgrades
A recent Apple firmware update is causing major problems for some MacBook Pro owners, talk on Apple's support forums indicates. The update was intended to bring full 3Gbps throughput to the Pro's SATA controller, after it was discovered that the newest models had been artificially limited to 1.5Gbps. Samsung ending 1.8-inch HDD production?

Garmin launches Dakota line of handheld GPS units for the great outdoors
Garmin's already firmly entrenched in the GPS for outdoorspeople game with its Oregon line of handhelds, and now the company's announced a new series, the Dakotas. Two models -- the 10 and 20, respectively -- have been launched, and are, overall, a bump up from the Oregon line. These bad boys supposedly have a 20 hour battery charge life, a 2.6-inch LCD (diagonally), and store up to 200 tracks. The higher-end Dakota 20 boasts a MicroSD slot, an electronic compass, a barometric altimeter, and wireless data transfer between compatible units. Palm verbucht 105 Millionen Dollar Verlust im vierten Quartal
Palm hat in im vierten Quartal des Geschäftsjahres 2009 (bis 29. Mai) einen Verlust von 105 Millionen Dollar oder 0,78 Dollar je Aktie verbucht. Eine telefonische Umfrage unter 1147 Kunden von Vocal Laboratories bescherte Apple einen ersten Platz vor Dell und HP. Schweden: Neuverhandlung des Pirate-Bay-Prozesses abgelehnt

Red Hat steigert Umsatz und Gewinn im ersten Quartal
Red Hat hat im ersten Geschäftsquartal 2009 (bis 31. Mai) 174,4 Millionen Dollar umgesetzt, elf Prozent mehr als im gleichen Zeitraum des Vorjahres. Mit dem Verkauf von Softwarelizenzen erzielte Red Hat einen Umsatz von 148,8 Millionen Dollar, was einem Anstieg von fast 14 Prozent entspricht. Wie das Hacker-Team rundum iphone-dev.org bekannt gegeben hat, ist ein Jailbreak und Unlock des iPhone 3GS grundsätzlich möglich. Nach näherer Untersuchung des iPhone 3GS konnte man relativ schnell feststellen, dass der 24Kpwn-Exploit des iPod touch 2G auch beim iPhone 3GS noch vorhanden ist. iPhone 3GS: 400% mehr mobile YouTube-Uploads
Laut dem offiziellen YouTube-Blog verzeichnet der Videodienst seit dem Verkaufsstart des neuen iPhone am letzten Freitag täglich 400 Prozent mehr Uploads von Mobilgeräten.
Die Videofunktion im iPhone 3GS bietet die Möglichkeit, das gefilmte Material direkt nach der Aufnahme an YouTube oder MobileMe sowie per E-Mail oder MMS zu versenden. Anfang und Ende des Clips können direkt nach der Aufnahme zurecht geschnitten werden.
Das neue iPhone wird als Videolieferant für YouTube möglicherweise bald eine ähnliche Stellung wie als Foto-Zulieferer für Flickr einnehmen, dort ist es bereits mit Abstand die populärste Handy-Kamera.

iPhone 3GS exploit confirmed, jailbreak and unlock coming 'soon'
And so it continues. Geohot has returned with some help from hacking buddies chronic, posixninja, and pod2g with news that the same "24kpwn" exploit used to cracked open the iPod touch 2G will work on the iPhone 3GS. That means a jailbreak and unlock can be launched just as soon as the existing tools are updated for the iPhone 3GS (which won't be long). As George Hotz laments,

Tomorrow is today which makes it time to get your Windows 7 pre-order in. Amazon issued a big 'ol press release telling us that it's now offering the Home Premium Upgrade and Professional Upgrade packages for $49.99 and $99.99 though July 11th, while supplies last -- nothing special there as it's the standard pricing you'll find at all your favorite on-line retailers. Amazon does promise, however, that you'll "receive the product" when released to shops on October 22nd. Note a 3 per customer limit so don't get greedy, ok? It's not like Microsoft can just press the OS onto another disc or something.

Auto plus has tested the software Mobile navigator for the iPhone and compared it to a GPS Navigon 7210 and a Tomtom. The software on the Apple telephone competes well against these autonomous version and yields nothing.

OCZ to Offer Overclocked SSD Models
Who could be thinking to overclock a drive in order to make it going faster? Well, it seems that OCZ is on track to give it a try, with new SSD Vertex series entitled "Turbo". Those drives would feature the Indilix BareFoot controller associated with MLC memory chips. Then by selecting only the best components the performance levels score high: 278 MB/s and 213 MB/s in reading and writing mode respectively; in other words 10% faster than the "classical" Vertex.
If "overclock" might not be the best term, it seems that OCZ is trying to overclock Indilix BareFoot controller. If the life time of the drive should not be that much impacted by this overclocking, it is important to look at the effect on the power consumption. Indeed, one should not forget that one the primary marketing parameters to advertise SSDs over HD was lower power consumption.

HTC's Sense UI not coming to any "Google" branded phones
We've got some good and bad news mostly bad, though. First, the good news: HTC is looking into finding a way to bring its new Sense UI -- the one featured prominently in the new Hero -- to its non-Google branded Android devices, such as Canadian carrier Roger Wireless' Magic. ZuneHD launch to coincide with next iPod touch launch?
Gizmodo got their hands on some internal Microsoft docs which have put the launch of the Tegra-powered, OLED-screen having, iPod touch-competing ZuneHD at September 8th. It will come in the very iPod touch and now iPhone-like 16GB and 32GB varieties
A tipster just dropped off a few internal Microsoft docs that point to a September 8 launch of the Zune HD. In addition to that, the tipster says it's coming in 16GB and 32GB versions. All pretty logical.
We already knew that the HD has Nvidia's Tegra inside, which makes it a high powered, high performance device that can handle HD output and possibly some nice gaming. What we don't know is what the cost of the OLED screen and the cost of Tegra will make the final price. No word on that yet from the tipster.

Sony exec admits "certain premium" associated with PSPgo
Alright, so this one isn't exactly a shocker, but it is a little bit of honesty that's not often found when it comes to talking about the prices of new gadgets. Speaking with MCV, SCEE President Andrew House denied that R&D costs and retailer mark-ups were the reason behind the PSPgo's high price tag, saying instead that, "when you introduce a new piece of hardware you have the opportunity to say there is a certain premium that is associated with it, and we took that into account."
