Apple sucht Mitarbeiter für Frankfurter Apple Store
Ob ein starker Dialekt bei der Bewerbung von Vorteil ist, sei dahingestellt, bestätigt ist jedenfalls ein Apple Store in Frankfurt. Wie schon zuvor in Hamburg hat Apple nun mit der Mitarbeitersuche begonnen und nimmt Initiativbewerbungen für den Standort "Hesse 60313". Es wäre nach München und Hamburg der dritte Apple Store in Deutschland.

AORA builds sci-fi-looking solar/hybrid plant in the Israeli desert
A company called AORA has developed a hybrid solar power plant in the Israeli desert. Comprised of a number of 100kWe base units, the operation is modular (additional units can be added) and it should be complete sometime in the next ten days. When operational, thirty mirrors will track the sun and direct its rays up to the 98.4 foot tall "flower," where the concentrated sunlight heats compressed air, which in turn drives an electric turbine. When the sun has set for the day (or if it's cloudy) the turbine can be run off of biodiesel, natural gas, or fossil fuels, allowing the plant to operate twenty-four hours. Apple posts Java updates for Tiger, Leopard
Apple has has posted two new Java update patches, targeting Mac OS X Leopard and Tiger, respectively. The Leopard patch, Update 4, is said to improve the "reliability, security and compatibility" of Java by updating Java SE 6 to 1.6.0_13, J2SE 5.0 to 1.5.0_19, and J2SE 1.4.2 to 1.4.2_21. Mac OS X 10.5.7 is required, and Java SE 6 is only functional on Intel Macs, due to particular 64-bit code.

DataViz has released several mobile Office apps for the iPhone and iPod touch, Documents To Go and Documents To Go with Exchange support. The program allows users to view, create or edit Microsoft Word files, including Word 2007, and then sync the content with a desktop application. Mintpass launches English Mintpad website, sign of things to come?
Well, there's not exactly a whole lot to go on with this one, but Mintpass looks to have just recently launched an English version of its Mintpad website, which could well be yet another a sign that the MID / PMP is finally nearing a release outside of South Korea. Palm Pre data tethering is a go, Sprint be damned
Well, that was fast. Just a couples hours after we noted Palm warning against hacking webOS to allow data tethering on the Pre, the first set of instructions has popped up. It's not the cleanest hack we've ever seen -- you need to root your phone, enable SSH, and then configure your browser to run through a SOCKS proxy -- but it'll certainly get the job done in a pinch. New MacBook Pros shipped with HDDs only have 1.5Gbps SATA chips
Apple might have bumped the 13-inch unibody MacBook to Pro status at WWDC last week, but it looks like all the shuffling around to reduce costs has had an unfortunate side effect: new MacBook Pros that ship with HDDs have a 1.5GBps SATA controller, while SSD configs are apparently getting the 3.0GBps SATA II chip that used to be standard equipment. For most people this won't make too much difference since traditional hard drives can't move data that fast, but it's something to keep in mind if you're hoping to buy an HDD unit and swap in a speedier SSD, since your max performance will be bottlenecked. Editing documents? On a phone? We're sure most iPhone users are a little taken aback by this prospect, but we assure you it's completely safe and devoid of artificial preservatives. Snow Leopard: Apple Switched to Base 10 Counting

Apple begins shipping iPhone 3GS orders
Having only announced the device a week ago, Apple is already beginning to ship the iPhone 3GS for online pre-orders, anecdotes indicate. American orders shipping today should in theory arrive June 19th, the official launch date for the product. Delivery may be highly dependent on when an order was placed however, as the first wave of pre-orders sold out last Saturday.

New 13-, 15-inch MacBook Pros using slower SATA
Apple has scaled back the SATA interface speeds in some of its new MacBook Pros, testing reveals. Whereas Pros have typically been equipped with 3Gbps SATA, the new 13- and 15-inch systems have been limited to 1.5Gbps. We've got a number of tips this morning about lucky iPhone 3G S pre-orderers getting shipment notifications from Apple. Naturally, with a high profile launch like this we're guessing Apple has done all it can to ensure shipments won't slip through earlier than the June 19th launch date, but hopefully at least few folks will get lucky -- and at least they've got one of the only guarantees of a launch day phone going. CNET, on the fourth anniversary of the switch from PowerPC to Intel, has interviewed an ex-IBMer who had been familiar with the IBM PowerPC-Apple relations at the time. He/She(/Papermaster?) had some interesting insights into the situation at the time.

Supermarket generates piezoelectric power in parking lot
Remember that piezoelectric road prototype we saw late last year? Looks like someone (besides us) thought it was a good idea. According to The Daily Mail, a Sainsbury's supermarket in Gloucester, UK (you've never been there), has installed kinetic plates in the parking lot that use the weight of shopper's cars to pump a series of hydraulic pipes, which in turn drive a generator. NVIDIA pops out five new mobile GPUs to fill invisible gaps in its 200M series lineup
NVIDIA is filling in what it presumes to be holes in its next-generation GPU lineup, adding the 40nm G210M, GT 230M, GT 240M and GTS 250M, with GDDR3 memory ranging from 512MB to 1GB, to its existing GTX 280M, GTX 260M and GTS 160M laptop graphics cards. Apparently the new cards sport "double the performance" and "half the power consumption" over the last generation of discrete GPUs they're replacing. AT&T to offer MMS for free (with Texting bundle) later this summer
According to AT&T's latest PDF FAQ, they'll offer MMS messages free with a texting plan. There had been concern that AT&T would charge exorbitant rates for the (antiquated?) service. One day ahead of its scheduled release, Olympus' EP-1 micro four thirds digital camera has been leaked. The camera is equipped with a 13-megapixel, 3 CCD sensor and can capture RAW images. Did Apple Limit the SATA Bus to 1.5 Gbits/s in New MacBook Pro to Save Power?
A topic on Macrumors forum has beem attracting a lot of interest. It is reported that the SATA bus is limited to 1.5 Gbits/s instead of 3.0 GBits/s normally for SATA II specifications and on the preivous MacBook Pro Unibody models.
Many hypotheses have been expressed to understand why the dandwidth has been divided by 2, however we do not find any of those valuable. It might also be a bug or a on purpose choice made by Apple to save power and extend battery life. So, with the new MBP, the SATA bandwidth is limited to 130 MB/s according to serveral tests. In other words, it does not make sense to invest in a ultra-fast SSD delivering 200 MB/s or more in reading/writing speed on such MBP.

Dell Android smartphone spotted?
Dell's rumored Android device may have finally been captured in an image captured in a Chinese forum post (membership required to see). OSX/Jahlav-C: Neuer Mac-Trojaner gibt sich als fehlender Videocodec aus
Eine neue Variante des Mac-Trojaners OSX.RSPlug ist am Wochenende entdeckt worden. Mit der Bezeichnung OSX/Jahlav-C lässt der Trojaner ein Perl-Script im Hintergrund laufen, das regelmäßig einen externen Server kontaktiert, der auch weiteren Schadcode zur Verfügung stellen könnte. Verbreitet wird OSX/Jahlav-C in Form eines angeblich fehlenden ActiveX-Videocodecs, der auf Porno-Websiten zum Download angeboten wird.

Dell behauptet, in den vergangenen zwei Jahren über den Microblogging-Dienst Twitter mehr als drei Millionen US-Dollar erwirtschaftet zu haben. MacBook Pro 13″ und 15″: SATA-Geschwindigkeit halbiert
Nach der Veröffentlichung der neuen MacBook Pro Modelle ist ersten Testern nun aufgefallen, dass Apple offenbar kommentarlos die Geschwindigkeit der SATA-Schnittstelle in den Geräten von 3.0 Gbps auf 1.5 Gbps reduziert hat.

Weiterer DRAM-Hersteller streicht Arbeitsplätze
550 Jobs hat der DRAM-Produzent ProMOS Technologies in seinen Fabriken in Taiwan gestrichen. ProMOS leidet unter Geldknappheit und könnte nun vom staatlichen Dachkonzern Taiwan Memory Company gekauft werden. Die Branche hat die Talsohle der Krise offenbar noch nicht erreicht.

Sony Vaio P mit neuer CPU doppelt so schnell
Mit dem Vaio P hat Sony Anfang des Jahres eine Kreuzung aus Netbook und Notebook auf den Markt gebracht, die man selbst gerne als Mini-Notebook, keinesfalls jedoch als Netbook, verstanden wissen möchte. Auch in unserem Test fiel jedoch besonders die Geschwindigkeit negativ auf.

Intel Celeron bekommt 45-nm-Fertigung
Als letzter Ableger der „alten“ 65-nm-Garde bekommt auch der Celeron im dritten Quartal sein Update auf 45 nm spendiert. Mac-Klassiker Dark Castle kommt für das iPhone
Wenn Spielefirmen, die schon etwas länger im Geschäft sind, "App Store" hören, kann ihnen kein Klassiker schimmelig genug sein, um ihn nicht auf das iPhone umzusetzen. iPhone OS 3.0 may not be available to the masses for a couple days yet, but that's not stopping Tapulous (nor Apple's App Store overlords, apparently) from rolling out a new version of its ridiculously popular Tap Tap Revenge that's fully ready to take advantage of push notifications right here and right now. We've taken the new build for a spin, and in brief, it works as designed -- notification times ranged from near instantaneous to just under a minute. One of our editors here was testing on a cellular connection and the other was on a SIM-less iPhone 3G running just WiFi, so it looks like this setup will work pretty seamlessly regardless of what kind of connection you happen to be enjoying / tolerating /

New MacBook Pro 15" Offers Over 8 Hours Battery Life When Web Browsing
The website LaptopMag published a test of the new MacBook Pro 15" Unibody when running Mac OS X but also Windows. Results of the battery life evaluation in this test are particularly impressive.
They could surf on the web using wireless Wi-Fi connection for over 8 hours under mac OS X, a rather amazing performance level for a 15" MBP. If we were not convincing about this in-built battery technology when it was introduced with the MacBook Pro 17", current performance level indicate that it is the best solution.

You'd think that Nokia would want to do a better job of building up such important product announcements with a long, drawn-out series of frustratingly unhelpful teasers, viral videos, and global PR campaigns, but instead, it turns out that the rumored E72 and 5530 XpressMusic have been officially unveiled at the company's Connection 09 event in Singapore. Photographs of the Jackling house, a mansion Steve Jobs aims to demolish and build over, have surfaced on MacMagazine. The Brazilian news outlet photographed the mansion while on a day trip to visit areas frequented by Steve Jobs. Archos 10s and 13 laptops get the video treatment
Archos hit us with a couple new laptops earlier this week in Paris, and just as you'd expect, the crew from ArchosFans was there to grab some video of the new machines. The new Archos 10s pretty much just the Archos 10 repackaged in a slightly smaller package, while the Archos 13 is the company's foray onto the CULV scene -- it's pretty nice-looking for $800, but we're still wondering how Archos is planning on distinguishing either of these from the million other me-too netbooks and thin-and-lights on the market with the exact same specs. Die Time-Capsule-Kerze
Papier, Plüsch und Knetmasse waren gestern: Da eine Time Capsule schlecht brennt, hat ein japanischer Blogger eine Kerze samt Apple-Logo gefertigt. Eine Art Backform für das Wachs hat ihm bei der Fertigung geholfen. Im Vergleich zur echten Time Capsule ist die Wachsversion natürlich deutlich kleiner, aber dafür angezündet in einem abgedunkelten Raum viel romantischer.

Blu-ray bekommt legale Kopiermöglichkeit
Der Blu-ray-Standard ist nicht in Stein gemeißelt und wurde bereits mehrfach aktualisiert. Im nächsten Jahr wird es wieder so weit sein: Besitzer der Silberscheiben dürfen dann eine legale Kopie ihrer Disc machen. Diese Funktion ist Teil der abschließenden AACS-Lizenzvereinbarung und ist für die Filmstudios bindend. Filme, die nach dem ersten Quartal 2010 erscheinen, sollen daher eine Sicherheitskopie erlauben.
