AirPort 5.4.2 fixes bugs in Apple's wireless routers
Apple today released an update to its software for its line of branded wireless routers, including the AirPort Express Base Station, the AirPort Extreme Base Station, and Time Capsule. AirPort Utility 5.4.2 includes general fixes and compatibility updates for the following applications: AirPort Utility and AirPort Base Station Agent, Apple said. Video: Onkyo Sotec C204 hands-on impressions
The wild and crazy guys over at Portable Monkey have just got their hands on one of Onkyo's 10.1-inch Sotec C204 netbooks and were cool enough to share thoughts, impressions, and a madcap YouTube video with all of us. Priced at around ¥49,000 ($511), but seen going for less at various online tech purveyors, the gentleman's first impression of this device was, in a word, "great." SanDisk CEO concedes that Apple's iPod has won the war
Since the debut of the first iPod in 2001, almost every consumer technology company has tried to create an iPod killer to outsell it. SanDisk is one of those companies with its Sansa line of media players, but founder and CEO Eli Harari has now admitted that the iPod has sovereignty.

Flash Decompiler Trillix 4.0 ships
Eltima has released v4.0 of its Flash Decompiler Trillix software. The program deconstructs SWF files, allowing conversion into other formats. The update supports converting SWF files into Flex code, and can also process several files simultaneously, or break out content into elements such as images, sounds, videos and fonts.

iTunes code points to Nike+, FM support for iPhone
The recent iTunes 8.2 update allegedly includes code strings that point to several iPhone features, including Nike+ Sport Kit and FM radio support, that may arrive with next-generation devices, according to AppleInsider. Smith Micro to publish Pixelmator image editor
Smith Micro has announced that it will distribute Pixelmator, a photo and graphic editor from Pixelmator Team. The software offers over 130 effects and filters, and uses layers to handle tasks like painting, color correction and retouching. Using built-in Automator actions, Pixelmator can run batch processes, applying specified filters to a collection of images.

TechSmith intros Jing Pro screen capture app
TechSmith has released Jing Pro, a new version of its screen capture and recording application. Users can add screen-captured images and videos to online conversations, through links in e-mail and instant messages as well as online forums. Garmin-Asus set to launch first Android phone in Q1 2010
Garmin-Asus isn't exactly doing a ton of talking about it just yet, but PC World is reporting that the company has confirmed that it plans to release its first Android-based smartphone "no later than the first quarter of next year." An Asustek exec reportedly further added that the device could even come a bit earlier, but unfortunately didn't have anything to say about a potential price, or anything about the phone itself, for that matter. Collins Stewart, BMO Capital boost Apple ratings
Analyst Ashok Kumar of Collins Stewart has upgraded his rating for Apple stock, shifting it from Hold to Buy, and simultaneously setting a new price target of $170. North Carolina is officially official. Apple dropping $1 Billion over 10 years on the Tar Heel State
The rumors have been swirling for weeks, but as per the Governor's words, it is official. Gov. Beverly Perdue signed the incentives bill targeting Apple into law today.
"North Carolina continues to be a prime location for growing and expanding global technology companies," Perdue said in a news release. "We welcome Apple to North Carolina and look forward to working with the company as it begins providing a significant economic boost to local communities and the state."
The data center will only employ 50+ people full-time as the billion-dollar investment is made over nine years and includes mostly non-wage costs.

Classic Controller Pro appears at E3, unbeknownst to Nintendo
Well, here's a curious one. Those eagle-eyed folks at Joystiq caught sight of a pair of Classic Controller Pros for the Wii at Nintendo's E3 booth, which wouldn't be so unusual if not for the fact that it still hasn't been announced for release outside of Japan. Adding to the intrigue, the Nintendo reps at the booth apparently know nothing (or weren't talking) about a planned release, and there's no official word to speak of on the E3 press site either. iPhoto unable to upgrade older iPhoto Library databases
As users upgrade their software, in this case Apple's iLife (specifically iPhoto), they may find that some of their older databases are not able to be upgraded. While this does not occur often, it is a possibility. The most common reason is a corrupt iPhoto Library database file which often results in the failure to upgrade.

Sony PSP Go to take on iPod Touch
Sony yesterday released its answer to the iPod touch, the much-anticipated PSP Go. It differs from the original PSP because it has a slide out controller and instead of needing cartridges, you can now download content and games over the Internet. While the "content+games over the Internet" isn't such a new thing, they do have some impressive titles and it looks like the video hardware has been amped up a bit. We'll likely see the future of the iPod/iPhone platform next week. It appears that Apple is focusing on apps for this years WWDC.

While some of this stuff was outlined at the release of iPhone OS 3, Businessweek conjures up some other possibilities for App sharing:
One example of P2P connectivity will be available in the new iPhone 3.0 software, due this summer. Users will be able to play multiplayer games with one another using Bluetooth connectivity, rather than needing to be on a carrier's network. A player's phone will automatically detect nearby iPhones and iPod touches that run the same app and send them an invitation to join the game. While some of this stuff was outlined at the release of iPhone OS 3, Businessweek conjures up some other possibilities for App sharing:
One example of P2P connectivity will be available in the new iPhone 3.0 software, due this summer. Users will be able to play multiplayer games with one another using Bluetooth connectivity, rather than needing to be on a carrier's network. A player's phone will automatically detect nearby iPhones and iPod touches that run the same app and send them an invitation to join the game. Wow, just wow. We were about three months away from putting Pixel Qi on a temporary vaporware watch, and now we couldn't be happier about shoving this crow down our throats. A tipster tells us that the device you're looking at here is Sony Ericsson's codename "Vulcan" -- better known as the X2 -- which would presumably replace the X1 at some point in the next few days, weeks, months, or years. Though the picture's small, you can clearly make out the X Panel button in the lower left of the phone's front and a Windows key in the upper left of the keyboard, which adds a dose of credibility -- the company has, after all, put quite a bit of time and effort into pimping its panel interface SDK, and right now, the X1 is the only device that supports it. Sony PSP Go to take on iPod Touch
Sony yesterday released its answer to the iPod touch, the much-anticipated PSP Go. It differs from the original PSP because it has a slide out controller and instead of needing cartridges, you can now download content and games over the Internet. While the "content+games over the Internet" isn't such a new thing, they do have some impressive titles and it looks like the video hardware has been amped up a bit. We'll likely see the future of the iPod/iPhone platform next week. It appears that Apple is focusing on apps for this years WWDC.

We don't know if you're like us, but we've basically been waiting our whole lives to play The Beatles: Rock Band. Well, we got one step closer at E3 2009, as we were able to actually snuggle up close and personal with the full kit and see what was what (and show off our totally sick harmonies on "Love Me Do"). We have to say, Harmonix has absolutely outdone themselves with this bundle -- from the Ringo-style Ludwig drum set to Paul's unmistakable Höfner Violin bass it's all here, and it all looks brilliant. Gigabyte's MIB concept desktop PC: it's like a set-top-box, with a monitor
We must say -- between this thing and MSI's WindBOX, we'll take the latter. Sorry, thin is in! Anywho, we're sure there's some merit to Gigabyte's MIB concept, and we've no doubt that it can hold far more internal HDDs and maybe even a TV tuner or two. Few details about this oddity were present at Computex, but the VESA mount capability obviously bodes well for those who like to reposition their monitor every hour, on the hour. Kingston bringt Speicherkühler mit zwei Lüftern
Nachdem normaler Arbeitsspeicher vor einigen Jahren nur die offiziellen JEDEC-Spezifikationen erfüllen musste, kam irgendwann der Trend auf, höher getakteten Speicher inklusive Heatspreader den Käufern anzubieten. Selbst Arbeitsspeicher mit Lüftern ist heutzutage kein Problem mehr.

OCZ zeigt HTPC mit Nvidia Ion
Mehr oder weniger beiläufig hat OCZ auf der Computex 2009 auch noch einen HTPC vorgestellt. Bei dem vor Ort ausgestellten, laufenden System handelte es sich jedoch um einen Prototypen, bei dem auch das Design des Gehäuses noch nicht final sein muss.

AMD hat die Pressekonferenz auf der Computex am Mittwoch genutzt, um fast alle Bereiche und deren Neuerungen zu präsentieren. An erster Stelle stand natürlich der weltweit erste Grafikchip in 40-nm-Fertigung für den neuen DirectX-11-Standard, aber auch die Notebooks und Prozessoren wurden nicht vergessen.

Computex In Taipeh hat AMD erstmals einen Wafer mit Grafikprozessoren gezeigt, die DirectX-11-Funktionen beherrschen sollen. Windows 7 kommt am 22. Oktober
Im offiziellen windowsteamblog wurde nun bekannt gegeben, dass der Vista-Nachfolger Windows 7 weltweit ab dem 22. Oktober erhältlich sein wird. Bisher hatte man nur von einer Veröffentlichung in diesem Jahr gesprochen. Vor dem offiziellen Datum der allgemeinen Verfügbarkeit (General Availability) werdem Microsoft-Partner die Software bereits in der zweiten Juli-Hälfte erhalten.

Nintendo: Neues von Mario, Samus und Link
Die Nintedo-Präsentation auf der Spiele-Messe E3 zeigte deutlich, dass sich die Japaner immer mehr auf die Zielgruppe der Casual Gamer konzentrieren. Wenn man ein Video vom heimischen Rechner auf das transportable Handy kopieren möchte, muss man dieses zuerst in ein für das Abspielgerät kompatiblen Codec umwandeln, was der Hauptprozessor übernimmt. GETAC's ultra-rugged V100 gets upgrades for performance, not looks
For those of you in need of a PC capable of operating in extreme conditions (anyone reading this from a mine shaft or a bunker, for instance). Getac's battle-tested and war-weary V100 convertible tablet PC has received several key upgrades, including a bump in processing power to a 1.4 GHz Intel Penryn, a front side bus increased from 533 MHz to 800 MHz, a RAM increase (bringing the total up to 4GB), and a max capacity increase from 250GB to 320GB. If that weren't enough, this bad boy now supports draft 802.11n WiFi, and lastly (but not leastly) a new UL 1604 certification (optional) ensures safe, spark-free use of the device in potentially explosive environments. NVidia to Speed Up Adobe Flash Rendering
In a common press release, NVidia and Adobe announced their partnership to speed up rendering of flash animation thanks to smarter GPU usage by transferring part of the work from the CPU to the GPU. If this should be acknowledged as a good idea, it seems that Adobe is rushing to make its flash animation always smoother and faster. Instead of trying to get as much power as possible for this system, it might be smarter to rethink it to be less resource-demanding. When looking at the some flash animations it seems that it is draining more CPU power than some video editing software, such as iMovie to render HD video.

RAID 5 volume in a 3.5" SSD
The Japanese company Photofast, already known for SSD products built for exception and very high-end demand, announced a new stunning model.
In a 3.5" enclosure, they included 4 1.8" SSDs connected to each other by a RAID 5 controller. The main interest for end user is to be able to rely on the integrity of his data saved on such drive. of course, as it is based on a SATA II format, performance level will saturate to 300 MB/s max. There is nevertheless an important question not answered yet. As it is a RAID 5 volume, will the end user be able to replace (easily) a potentially faulty 1.8" SSD? If not than such RAID volume information is most probably there as a marketing information rather than a functional parameter. 3.5" SSD from OCZ
OCZ announced hte future availability of a 3.5" SSD.
Known as Colossus, this SSD will offer storage space ranging from 512 GB to 1 TB at an unknown price. It will use a new design based on two Indilix controllers set in a RAID 0 volume. If one considers that a single controller is able to deliver at least 150 MB/s in reading and writing mode, when associating two of them one could be close to the saturation of the SATA II format, 300 MB/s. Prices have not been unveiled, but one can extrapolate based on the 250 GB 2.5" OCZ Vertex: 800 Euro. So, it could give the 1 TB model around 2000 Euro as one does not need to get the thinnest engraved memory chips, as there are plenty of space in a 3.5" enclosure.

AMD shows off world's first DirectX 11 GPU
On a roll of late, aren't we AMD? Just when you thought the fun was slowing over in Taiwan, in flies this: the world's first official DirectX 11-friendly GPU demonstration. We also learned that DX 11 (and presumably, AMD cards to push it) will debut prior to the dawn of 2010, but outside of that, most everything else is being kept under wraps. Apple's three NYC stores pulling in 10 percent of all global store sales?
If the NYPost's numbers are correct, Apple's 5th Avenue store is pulling in more than its fair share of revenue. The store, which is open 24 hours a day, 365 days/year pulls in $440 million in revenue per year or a staggering $1.2million a day, including weekends and holidays.

NEC debuts new hybrid storage LaVie Light netbook
Netbooks with hybrid storage are still pretty few and far between, but it looks like NEC is set to offer one more option with its latest LaVie Light netbook (the BL350/TA6), which also offers a few other improvements over the previous model. Mio's new Intel Atom and AMD Neo netbooks might help you navigate through a sea of me-too computers at Computex
Sure, it's odd to see Mio churning out a couple of netbooks, but what's even more surprising is that they're at least somewhat interesting. The 8.9-inch Atom N270-powered Mio N890 includes 3G, GPS, Mio navigation software, an accelerometer, and a MagSafe-style breakaway power connector. It all weighs in under 2 pounds, and measures less than an inch thick. Meanwhile, the Mio N1210 (pictured) is one of the few computers we've seen so far running AMD's new Neo MV-40 processor. There's no mention of GPS, but the 12-inch laptop is preloaded with Windows 7 and 3G data, measures under an inch thick, and weighs under three pounds. No word on price for either, but both should be headed to Europe this fall.

DISH / EchoStar ordered to pay TiVo $190 million in patent infringement case
We're a bit hesitant to call this one done given the history involved, but a federal judge in Texas has dealt DISH / EchoStar yet another serious blow in its long-standing dispute with TiVo, and this time he's taken a number of other measures that could cause EchoStar to finally rethink its workaround-litigate strategy. The big setback for EchoStar, however, is the one-two punch of $190 million in damages it's been ordered to pay TiVo and an order to disable the "infringing function" on all but 193,000 DVRs now in the hands of subscribers. SilverPac SilverFrame packs Windows SideShow, FrameIt -- but is it still a photo frame?
Digital photo frames may have once been among the more predictable gadgets out there, but they're fast becoming something else entirely, as evidenced by SilverPac's new SilverFrame now on display at Computex. While it'll apparently function just fine as a regular 10.1-inch photo frame, the Windows Embedded 6.0-based device also packs a number of tricks up its sleeve -- like Windows Sideshow, Live FrameIt, and 802.11n WiFi -- that turn it into much more of a full-fledged media-playing, internet-connected device. Yenco releases Finance 6.0 with improved search tools

Apple's three NYC stores pulling in 10 percent of all global store sales?
If the NYPost's numbers are correct, Apple's 5th Avenue store is pulling in more than its fair share of revenue. The store, which is open 24 hours a day, 365 days/year pulls in $440 million in revenue per year or a staggering $1.2million a day, including weekends and holidays.
Before the GM Building was sold to a Boston Properties partnership last year, a prospectus shown to possible purchasers revealed the Apple store under the famous glass cube was doing an incredible $440 million a year. Is Sony's PSPgo just what you needed, or an overpriced rehash?
Apparently word is slowly trickling through Sony that its brand new handheld is actually called PSPgo (at least according to the second of two pieces of PR we've seen on the thing). We're guessing a similar word of mouth pace will operate in the inverse to communicate to top Sony brass that most folks think $250 for years-old gaming handheld hardware is a little steep these days. Of course, sequestered in our Engadget HQ and flush with cash from a hefty hit and run settlement a couple years back, we're more curious as to what you think about the price and feature set here. RedEye system turns iPhone into remote control
Thinkflood has announced an app for the iPhone and iPod touch that works with the company's RedEye, remote control system. When used in conjunction with the RedEye hub, the app allows users to control televisions, DVRs, game systems, and other home-entertainment devices with their iPhone or iPod touch. The software communicates with the hub using Wi-Fi and does not require line-of-sight to work. R

Synaptics shows off new MacBook-style "ClickPad" multitouch trackpads for netbooks
Synaptics has always been quick to pick up the latest innovation in the multitouch space -- whether its own functionality, or something Apple's brewed up. This latest innovation is squarely in the latter category, with new ClickPad trackpads offering that love-it-or-hate-it buttonless design of the new MacBooks and MacBook Pros (pictured).
