Jon Rubinstein takes over as Palm CEO
You sort of knew this was coming after he shepherded the Pre to launch, but Palm just announced that Jon Rubinstein is taking over as CEO, replacing Ed Colligan after sixteen years in the top spot. 13-inch MacBook Pro gets torn apart
We've only just started playing with our new 13-inch MacBook Pro, but the cats at iFixit have different ideas -- they've already torn one open for your morbid viewing pleasure. Interestingly, battery replacement involves only the removal of a couple tri-wing screws and a sticker, so the situation isn't totally dire, although we'd obviously prefer if Apple had left well enough alone. id Software entwickelt neues Doom für iPhone
Nicht nur die klassischen Ego-Shooter möchte id Software auf das iPhone portieren, auch neue Spiele sollen entstehen. Dennoch dürfte Doom Resurrection einigen bekannt vorkommen, denn es werden die Grafiken von Doom 3 verwendet, allerdings mit neuen Leveln. Amazon ships Kindle DX
Amazon on Wednesday started shipping the Kindle DX. The most advanced of the retailer's e-book readers was unveiled in May and is billed not only as a much more natural means of reading newspapers and magazines but also as an ideal tool for schools. Its 1200x824, 9.7-inch screen both affords more room for images and auto-rotates for landscape reading when the DX is tilted on its side.

PhoneView 2.2 adds support for iPhone 3.0
Ecamm Network has released PhoneView 2.2, an update to its Mac software for accessing and working with files on Apple handhelds. PhoneView allows users to export music, contacts and photos to a Mac, as well as call histories and SMS messages. Well, well -- what's this? Amazon's Kindle DX just arrived a little earlier than we expected, looking every bit like the big brother to the Kindle 2 it did at launch. Seriously -- apart from new, less comfortable keyboard, externally you're just looking at a Kindle 2 with a bigger screen. Turn it on, though, and you immediately notice the orientation sensor, which is almost too sensitive. Apple reducing June-quarter iPhone production?
Despite planning to launch the iPhone 3GS on June 19th, Apple is actually lowering its June-quarter iPhone production, claims Collins Stewart analyst Ashok Kumar. Virgin Mobile USA launches prepaid Broadband2Go 3G service
Virgin Mobile's just announced a prepaid 3G service under the Broadband2Go moniker, which will offer customers a contract-free internet option. The Novatel MC760 USB dongle -- which will be available exclusively at Best Buy -- will run $150, with fixed data rates of $10 for 100MB, $20 for 250MB, $40 for 600MB and $60 for 1GB. The $10 bundles will expire ten days after purchase, while the rest of them will expire after 30 days. Virgin's Broadband2Go will operate on Sprint's network in conjunction with Novatel Wireless. MacBook lässt sich von SD-Karte booten
Bei den neuen MacBooks wurde teilweise der ExpressCard-Slot durch einen SD-Karteneinschub ersetzt. Dies ist nicht, was es nicht bei anderen Notebooks auch schon gäbe und macht zumindest für vielfotografierende Anwender Sinn. Sony Ericsson XPERIA X2 shows up again, this time in silver
Reaction to the rumored X2 pictures leaked this far has been lukewarm at best, but hold up -- it's looking a whole lot different (and arguably better) in silver. We can certainly buy that this is dead-on real, since well, it looks real, and also because the X1's also available in both shades. We're still not convinced it outshines its predecessor for sheer sex appeal, but an 8.1 megapixel camera upgrade is hard to argue with, isn't it? Econo-Keys EK-76-TP portable keyboard packs a touchpad on the flipside
It's not all that easy to make a keyboard that stands out these days, but the folks at Econo-Keys have managed to do just that with their new EK-76-TP model, even if they may not have gotten the whole "usefulness" thing down pat. As you can see above, this one's claim to fame is a trackpad on the underside of the keyboard, which the company says can be "conveniently" used if you flip over the keyboard, or "used from underneath while typing." The keyboard also looks like it'll hold up well to life on the road, with it conforming to IP67 standards for dirt, dust and water resistance, and able to hold up to hospital-grade cleaning agents. French Constitutional Council Censored Anti-Piracy Bill
Basing its statement on the commitment for freedom of expression, customer choice and French legal system (you are by default innocent till the justice proves you are guilty), the French Constitutional Council censored the anti-piracy bill (aka Hadopi) drafted and voted last month by both French lawmakers' chambers. The Council censored the chapter of the law related to penalties to be applied on internet users caught in suing P2P network for illegal purposes. It was planned that internet connection would be cut after 2 warnings without any legal investigation, while targeted user will have to keep paying the ISP bill. iPhone 3GS gets PowerVR SGX GPU core, double the RAM

Some iPhone 3G S specs revealed
TMobile's Dutch site has revealed some iPhone processor specs, below:
This is the first revelation that the iPhone now has 256MB of RAM. Also, the 600MHz chip is likely the Samsung S5PC100 ARM Cortex A8 (link to our past evaluations of this processor). If the speed was simply megahertz, the new iPhone would only be 1.5 times as fast (400MHZ to 600MHz). This is a new class of processor which we've been talking about over the past few months.

Iwata says Nintendo tried and rejected camera-based motion control
It wasn't all that hard to see a bit of a brouhaha erupting now that all three console makers are more or less firmly committed to motion-control technology, but it's still always notable when one of the big three throws a shot across the bow, and Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata did just that in a recent interview with the Financial Times. Video: CTD's MID concept fits comfortably in freakishly large pockets
Sure, this isn't the sexiest MID render we've ever seen, but it does make for a fun little video. Cambridge Technology Development, known around MIT and environs for fluidic device design, CFD analysis, and a number of other things we know less than nothing about, have designed a collapsible, pocketable PC that they call the Dragonfly. This bad boy can take the form of a flip phone, a straight-up netbook, or it can lay flat, in "table mode," ideal for pen and touch input. New SSD Controller from JMicron
For those of you who are following the SSD market as we do, JMiron is a well known company for its controller that has been installed in most entry-level SDD so far. Its main problem is its lack of support for cache memory, making performance levels to drop significantly as soon as several simultaneous requests are in the queue. The company announced a new controller, known as JMF612, bringing support for external cache memory. We should rapidly know if this improvement allows the new JMicron controller to compete with the new competitors now available on the market. Indeed, the Japanese SSD manufacturer Photofast has already announced a SSD model based on this JMicron JMF612:

iPhone 3G S processor specs: 600MHz CPU, 256MB of RAM
Apple's being pretty cagey with the hard specs of the iPhone 3G S, but apparently T-Mobile Netherlands didn't get the message -- it's just posted up a specs page listing 256MB of RAM and a 600MHz CPU. That's up from 128MB and 412MHz in the first-gen and the 3G, and it's basically exactly what was rumored. Of course, the 3G S also has that new PowerVR SGX graphics chip that supports OpenGL ES 2.0, so the total speed boost is probably more than just pure clock speed, but we'll find out for sure when we get our hands on one.[Via

Mac equipped with an Intel processor 1 GB of RAM, 5 GB of disk space and a DVD reader for the installation.
H.264 acceleration of QuickTime will require a mac equipped a 9400M chip.
Open CL will require a Geforce 8600M WP, 8800GT, 9400M, 9600M WP, GT120, GT130 or Radeon HD 4850/4870.
Of course supports of 64 bits will only be possible with the 64 bits CPUs.
It will be possible to have the Snow Leopad update for 8,95 Euros if you buy new Mac since its annoucement. If you have Leopard, it will be necessary to buy the update for $29.95. Safari 4: Finale Version mit fehlenden Optionen und Features
Die Beta-Version von Safari 4 lies auf einige Neuerungen hoffen. Unter anderem eine neue Ansicht der Tabs, in der diese im oberen Teil eines Browser-Fensters angesiedelt waren.
Mit Release der finalen Version von Safari 4 hat sich Apple von dieser neuen Idee verabschiedet und die Tabs finden sich wie gewohnt unterhalb der Lesezeichenleiste. Eine Option, um die von vielen auch mittlerweile als positiv empfundenen, da platzsparend, Tabs zurückzuholen, sucht man vergebens.

New Mid-Range SSD Series from OCZ
OCZ keeps releasing new SSD series. After the Vertex series, originally launched as a mid-range product, and now so popular that it ranks as high-end models, OCZ introduced the Agility series.
This new mid-range product is based on Indilinx Barefoot controller associated with 64 MB of cache, however performance will be lower than with the Vertex:
The 30 GB model should offer 185 MB/s and 100 MB/s respectively in reading and writing mode.
the 60 GB and 120 GB models will have higher performance with respectively 230 MB/s and 135 MB/s in reading and writing mode.
This is mostly the performance level of the writing speed that is slower wit the Agility series than with the Vertex series, this might be linked to the way OCZ designed the PCB and the bandwidth. Prices remain unknown, however, they should be lower than the Vertex

Prozessormarkt: Intel verliert Anteile an AMD
Den Marktforschern von iSuppli zufolge hat Intel zwischen Januar und März zum ersten Mal seit zwölf Monaten Marktanteile an AMD verloren. Safari 4 exits beta-test today, bringing a bunch of security fixes. Meanwhile, Apple announced that Snow Leopard will ship in September at an upgrade price of $29 for Intel-based Macs only, with Exchange integration, a new QuickTime and a Finder code rewrite. Snow Leopard Server is due at the same time at $499 for an unlimited-client version. Safari 4 exits beta today. The 13-inch aluminum MacBook moves to the MacBook Pro family at $1199 with FireWire 800, SD memory slot and integrated (non-replaceable) battery. The 15-inch MacBook Pro gets the same kind of battery and the same SD card slot, losing the ExpressCard slot (which is retained in the 17-inch model) with a starting price of $1699. The MacBook Air gets a price cut, and the white, FireWire MacBook remains at $999. Simyo senkt Roaming-Preise zum 1. Juli
Nach der O2-Tochter Fonic hat auch die E-Plus-Discountmarke Simyo zum 1. Juli niedrigere Auslandspreise für Handygespräche und SMS innerhalb der EU angekündigt. Während der Keynote am vergangenen Montag hat Apple versprochen, noch am selbigen Tag die «Gold Master», die letzte Version welche schlussendlich auch verteilt wird, der am 17. Juni 2009 erscheinenden iPhone OS 3.0 Software für Entwickler bereit zu stellen. Inzwischen bereitet Apple auch MobileMe auf das neue Betriebssystem vor und öffnet bereits vor dem offiziellen Launch die Funktion «Find my iPhone» für Entwickler. Google-CEO macht sich wegen Bing keine Sorgen
Googles CEO Eric Schmidt hat sich in einem Fernsehinterview erstmals öffentlich über Microsofts neue Suchmaschine Bing geäußert. "Das ist ja nicht Microsofts erster Versuch", sagte er Fox Business Network. "Sie führen ungefähr einmal im Jahr einen solchen Relaunch durch. Vergessen Sie die Versionsnummer - Google hat die Quick Search Box überarbeitet ( wir berichteten ). Auffälligste Änderung gegenüber der zuletzt vorgestellten Version ist die deutsche Lokalisierung. Leopard 10.5.8 als letztes Update für PPC-Nutzer

When we were breaking down the meaty differences between the old-school 3G and the 3G S yesterday, we made an assumption about support for OpenGL ES 2.0 3D graphics APIs in the original iPhone 3G based on the fact that it had been available in the iPhone OS 3.0 SDK for several betas. Xbox 360 erhält Lebensspanne von 10 Jahren

Einem Bericht zufolge testet Apple momentan die ersten internen Builds von Mac OS X 10.5.8, dem nächsten Update für Leopard. Inzwischen ist es ein festes Ritual, dass Apple auf der Keynote Entwickler auf die Bühne holt und neue Apps präsentiert. Zu sehen gab es Einiges, von der Navigationssoftware TomTom bis zur Fernhupe. MobileMe: iPod touch/iPhone suchen und löschen
Die neu angekündigte MobileMe-Funktion iPhone suchen und finden wird ebenso für den iPod touch verfügbar sein und kann von Entwicklern bereits getestet werden.
Unter den Account-Einstellungen findet sich auf me.com bereits der neue Menüeintrag "Mein iPhone suchen". An zum Betatest eingetragene Geräte kann man hier Textnachrichten schicken, es lässt sich - falls man den Touch mal wieder im alltäglichen Chaos nicht finden kann - ein zweiminütiger Signalton auslösen, oder das Gerät gleich komplett aus der Ferne löschen. Auf einer Karte lässt sich zudem ausgesprochen zuverlässig die aktuelle Position des iPod oder iPhones anzeigen.
Die Funktion wird mit dem für 17. Juni angekündigten Software-Update allen MobileMe-Kunden zur Verfügung stehen. MobileMe ist ein kostenpflichtiger Zusatzdienst von Apple und gegen eine Jahresgebühr von

Die Telekom wird ihr Mobile TV-Angebot offensichtlich auch für das iPhone bereitstellen. Symantec: Spam-Aufkommen sinkt nach Webhoster-Schließung
Laut Symantec hat die Schließung des Webhosters Pricewert in der letzten Woche zu einem Rückgang des Spam-Aufkommens geführt. Die Aktivität des Botnetzes "Cutwail" habe seit vergangenem Donnerstag deutlich nachgelassen. Im Mai war Cutwail noch für 35 Prozent der weltweit verschickten Spam-Mails verantwortlich.

Apple bastelt derzeit an einem Update für das (noch) aktuelle Mac OS X 10.5, berichtet Apple Insider . Noch vor Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard soll das Update 10.5.8 erscheinen, das vor allem für PowerPC-Besitzer gedacht ist. Apple posted some details about Snow Leopard, the minimum techniques specifications are as follows:
Mac equipped with an Intel processor 1 GB of RAM, 5 GB of disk space and a DVD reader for the installation.
H.264 acceleration of QuickTime will require a mac equipped a 9400M chip.
Open CL will require a Geforce 8600M WP, 8800GT, 9400M, 9600M WP, GT120, GT130 or Radeon HD 4850/4870.
Of course supports of 64 bits will only be possible with the 64 bits CPUs.
It will be possible to have the Snow Leopad update for 8,95 Euros if you buy new Mac since its annoucement. If you have Leopard, it will be necessary to buy the update for $29,95. For those who have Tiger, it will be necessary to buy Mac Box Set containing Snow Leopard, iLife, Keynote… Clearly it will not be sold singularly.

Radeon HD 4870/90 Cheaper
AMD just decreased prices of the Radeon HD 4870 and 4890. this is a significant price cut as one can save 50 Euro. In other words, a Radeon HD 4870 featuring 512 MB VRAM, similar to the Mac Edition available on the Apple Store will now cost 130 Euro, in other words 2.5 fold less than the Mac Edition! The latest is now 2 times more expensive than the high-end HD 4890 PC. It is about time that Apple leaves to GPU manufacturers a free field to offer their product without trying to interfere, it can only improve customer satisfaction.

First Test of the GeForce GTX 285 Mac Edition
XLR8Yourmac published a first test of the NVidia GeForce GTX 285 Mac Edition. In summary, this card is faster than the Radeon HD 4870 for games, however it remains slower for all Apple Pro applications. this is the usual biased results with NVidia graphic cards: poor performance level with Open GL which is mostly used by Apple Pro software.Overall, the performance gain in games provided by the GF GX 285 is rather limited and we have been a bit disappointed as we were expecting more from this new GPU. Again drivers might help to improve figures, and it could also changed when both cards will be compared on a hardware running Snow Leopard.

Palm Pixie (Eos) confirmed via webOS ROM leak?
This webOS ROM leak just keeps getting better and better. The PreCentral guys have reportedly found in the code some interesting tidbit in the miniboot.sh that distinctly references two different devices: "castle" (likely the codename for Pre) and "pixie," which we have previously heard as another name for the rumored AT&T-bound Eos. Is this a sign that Palm's oft-whispered Pre successor is revving up just around the corner? We can only hope.

We couldn't believe it either, but as it turns out, from the launcher screen of your Pre, simply type in the phrase "upupdowndownleftrightleftrightbastart" -- which if you parse with spacing might be more easily recognizable as the infamous Contra / Konami code (look it up) -- and up comes a hidden app called "Developer Mode Enabler." Mercedes debuts airbag-laden S-Class ESF hybrid concept
Apparently not content to simply build a hybrid vehicle that's both energy-efficient and luxurious, Mercedes has now gone the extra mile with its new 2009 S-Class ESF concept, which packs more than a dozen different safety features including airbags inside and out. That latter outside-the-car airbag is actually a giant braking bag that deploys under the car when it "senses an imminent crash," which not only creates some added friction to slow the car down, but lifts the front of the car up about 80mm to compensate for brake dive. Other uncommon safety features include curtain airbags between the seats, airbags in the seatbelts, reflective tires, and "inflatable metal structures" throughout the vehicle, which apparently both saves space and increases crash

Israeli military develops robot snake for battlefield, children's nightmares
While this is by no means the first time we've seen a robotic snake prototype, it isn't every day that we find one so close to deployment. This self-propelling, two feet long robot can crawl along the ground, climb through debris, and even stand erect to give the operator a better view. The Israeli Defense Force is will use this thing for routine surveillance and reconnaissance, broadcasting video and sound to a monitor and control station. And if this is not enough?
