Ballmer: "Apple is only a $500 logo"
Steve Ballmer is making a pretty regular habit of putting his foot in his mouth on Apple's success. He was this week quoted by Techflash as saying:
Apple gained about one point, but now I think the tide has really turned back the other direction.
The economy is helpful. Paying an extra $500 for a computer in this environment - same piece of hardware - paying $500 more to get a logo on it? I think that's a more challenging proposition for the average person than it used to be.
The bad news for Microsoft? We aren't paying that extra $500 for the hardware.

ASUS Eee PC 1008HA reportedly priced at £359
We're not totally sure we believe this just yet, but Notebook Choice has it that ASUS' Eee PC 1008HA -- which we got up close and personal with at CeBIT -- will begin shipping out across the pond next month. Thomson outs next-generation lossless MP3 format

OpenBerry DIY messenger heavy on style, won't replace your smartphone
Looking for a weekend DIY project? Using a 26-key ButtonShield keyboard module and salvaging parts from his Open Source GameBoy project, Liquidware Antipasto blogger intheblitz has created the OpenBerry, a Arduino-based mobile messenger that's maybe one-half part BlackBerry and and seven parts great icebreaker at parties (the kind of parties we go to, at least). Right now the functionality is minimal -- it sends and receives messages synced to your laptop via a XBee module. The interface is also lacking, but a GUI is in apparently the works.

Internet Explorer 8 launch fails to dent Firefox

Jersey case adds to toll of iPhone speed lawsuits

Sony Ericsson expects $461m loss on weak sales

Apple, AT&T get sued for misleading 3G claims, again
Is there a better way to ring in the first day of spring than with another lawsuit aimed at Apple and AT&T? Probably, but apparently not for Damone Dickerson, who has filed a lawsuit in the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey that again takes aim at the pair over allegedly misleading claims about 3G speeds. According to Dickerson, he has only be able to connect to the 3G network a "fraction of the time," and when he was able to connect it did not provide "full and continual service." Sony Ericsson says first quarter sales down 50%, $500m loss expected
Things just aren't going well for Sony Ericsson at the moment: hot on the heels of rumors that Ericsson might be looking to split out, the partnership's cautioning investors that first quarter sales are down some 50 percent. Messenger for Mac to drop PowerPC support?
The next version of Microsoft's Messenger for Mac will be an Intel-only application, a source tells MacNN. The latest beta builds of Messenger 8 are said to have dropped all references to PowerPC architecture, making the app unusable by even G5-based Mac desktops. Exact reasons are unknown, but Intel hardware may be necessary to exploit the app's audio and video chat capabilities.

Following up on yesterday's Twittering Apple post, 9to5mac reader Hard-Hat-Mac points us to two more Apple Twitter feeds.

It looks like it is getting answered every minute or so but there are currently only 6 followers. This might someday beat the support forums for finding trends on bad Apple parts or getting a quick answer from a Genius.

Palm posts net loss of $95 million for Q3, reaffirms that Pre is on schedule
Palm's third quarter earnings earnings report for 2009 has dropped, and it's looking pretty rough for the old boys. The company posted a net loss of $95 million dollars in the quarter, and sold 482,000 units where it sold 833,000 in the same quarter last year. Palm's total earnings for the quarter fell 71 percent over last year, from $312 million to just $90.6 million. Palm stock fell a net 53 cents quarter over quarter, though it's made some recent significant gains. Windows Mobile 6.5 mit iPhone-ähnlichem Interface
Microsofts Produktmanager, Loke Uei Tan, hat auf der von Microsoft ins Leben gerufenen Webdesigner-Konferenz MIX09 die Benutzeroberfläche des neuen Windows Mobile 6.5 vorgeführt. Und siehe da: Es ähnelt derjenigen vom iPhone. Anfang dieses Jahres vorgeführte Testversionen hatten noch kleine Icons und Symbole, die in einem klar erkennbaren Bienenwabenmuster angeordnet waren. Die jetzt von Tan gezeigte überarbeitete Oberfläche hat große und besser erkennbare Symbole bekommen, und das Wabenmuster ist verschwunden. Auch das Scrollverhalten ähnelt nun dem vom iPhone her bekannten.

SanDisk's slotRadio player, which we're still struggling to understand, is all set to ship on March 31st after debuting alongside a gazillion other gadgets at CES. Wie Golem berichtet fusioniert der bekannte Festplattenhersteller LaCie mit dem Online-Speicherdienst Wuala der Caleido AG. Wuala setze bei seinem Angebot nicht auf zentrale Server, sondern "auf die Festplatten und die Bandbreite seiner Nutzer,", so Golem. Damit möchte man erreichen, dass vorhandene Kapazitäten sinnvoll genutzt werden und Download-Geschwindigkeiten steigen. Die Verschlüsselung der Daten soll ein Java-Programm übernehmen. Kauf-HD-Filme im US iTunes Store
In einer Pressemitteilung hat Apple die Verfügbarkeit von HD-Filmen zum Kauf und zur Miete über den US iTunes Store angekündigt. Ab sofort können Filme wie “Quantum of Solace” und “Twilight” vorbestellt werden. Die Filme werden bereits in der kommenden Woche veröffentlicht und können dann auch ohne Apple TV genutzt werden.

US-iTunes: Aktuelle Kinofilme in HD
Der neidvolle Blick über den Teich: In den USA können inzwischen auch aktuelle Kinofilme zeitgleich mit dem DVD-Start in HD-Qualität direkt über den iTunes Store bezogen werden, zuvor war dies nur über Apple TV möglich. Die Kaufpreise für Neuerscheinungen liegen bei 20 Dollar für die HD-Version sowie 15 Dollar für die Standardausgabe.
Zusammen mit der HD-Variante erhält man den Film auch in einer mit iPods und dem iPhone kompatiblen Version mit Standard-Kodierung. Im Verleih sind die HD-Versionen bislang nicht verfügbar, ein Leihfilm kostet im amerikanischen iTunes Store derzeit 3,99 Dollar.

Juice Pack: Ladepaket für den iPod touch 2G
Bereits längere Zeit für das iPhone und die erste Generation des iPod touch erhältlich (zum Beispiel bei Amazon), hat Mophie das Juice Pack - eine Kreuzung aus Hartschale und Zusatzakku - nun auch für den iPod touch 2G vorgestellt.
Die robuste Hülle macht den iPod minimal dicker und verspricht bis zu 42 Stunden mehr Audio- bzw. 7 Stunden mehr Videowiedergabe. Dabei saugt der iPod grundsätzlich immer zuerst das Juice Pack leer und kann anschließend noch mit voll gefülltem Akku entnommen werden. OLED ist schon seit vielen Jahren die Technologie der Zukunft: Besserer Kontrast und geringerer Stromverbrauch sprechen für die Displays, die aber von Herstellern nur vereinzelt verbaut werden. Move over RRoD, it looks like there's a new Xbox 360 hardware failure in town. According to anecdotal data collected by Joystiq as well as Google Trends, there's been a steady rise in reports and discussion of the E74 error since mid-October, with no apparent correlation between any specific model or year of purchase. From what we can tell, the E74 error is related to video problems caused by either a faulty AV connector or, more often, a loosened ANA / HANA scaling chip. Portland, Oregon was the first place to get a taste of Clearwire's own WiMAX service, so it's not exactly all that surprising that it's also going to be the first to get Comcast's version of the very same high-speed wireless service. Er, something like that. Reportedly, Toshiba has conjured up some sort of newfangled technology that's able to more accurately reproduce sound by using a noise canceling auxiliary speaker. Specifically, the tech utilizes "sound from an auxiliary speaker to eliminate noise generated from the main speaker," and in case your wild guess wasn't good enough, it relies on "opposite-phase sound waves generated from the auxiliary speaker attached to the main speaker" to make it all happen. Suffice it to say that Computer Shopper was really really into that ASUS W90Vp-X1 gaming notebook that popped up on Newegg recently. This nearly 12 pound behemoth, the reviewer exclaims, not only sets "new 3D-graphics and productivity-speed records," but its 18.4-inch (1,920 x 1,080) LCD is "gorgeous," sporting "incredible color quality and wide viewing angles." New SMM exploit targets Intel CPU caching vulnerability
This one delves pretty deep into head-scratching territory, but it looks like the folks at Invisible Things Lab have discovered an exploit that could open the door to some potentially serious attacks on certain Intel CPUs paired with some popular motherboards. Of course, the exploit that they've actually released is completely harmless, but it demonstrates that the CPU cache can be "poisoned" to let folks read and write into the otherwise protected SMRAM memory. AMD: Interessante Zahlen zu Wafer-Bestellungen
