Shuttle gets extra official with luggable X50 all-in-one PC
Shuttle wasn't exactly tip-toeing around this one at CES in January, but the company has now gone the extra mile and gotten fully official with its new X50 all-in-one PC, which takes square aim at the likes of ASUS' Eee Top and other Atom-based nettops. As with ASUS' offering, this one packs a reasonably-sized 15.6-inch 1,366 x 768 touchscreen, along with the more nettop-minded Atom 330 processor, 1GB of RAM, a 160GB hard drive, a built-in 1.3-megapixel webcam and microphone, and a generous five USB 2.0 ports, among other standard fare. Developer enables tethering in iPhone 3.0 beta
A developer has allegedly enabled tethering with the iPhone 3.0 beta operating system, after "hacking around" with APNs in the Carrier.bundle file, according to MacRumors. A new preference window indicates that users will be able to tether via USB or Bluetooth, effectively turning the iPhone into an external modem for desktop or notebook computers.

USB tethering, Publish Video and Find my iPhone found in OS 3.0
Apple touted quite a few new iPhone features at yesterday's OS 3.0 event, but now that the beta build is trickling out, there's been a bevy of unearthed discoveries to further pique our interests. First up, the gang at Boy Genius Report found an option to enable the "Find My iPhone" service in the MobileMe settings. Unfortunately, that's all we've got, but we wouldn't put it past Cupertino to build some me.com-linked location tracker that'd be the envy of Orwell himself -- hey, that'd be pretty useful if you accidentally left the mobile in a taxi. iPhone apps: ConnectDots, Pocket Universe, Twist
ConnectDots ($1) brings the experience of connect-the-dot style puzzles to the iPhone. The application includes sixteen different illustrations and when the outline has been discovered using the dots one can fill in the picture with various colors. Beta driver allows AMILO GraphicBooster to shed the external display
Fujitsu Siemens's AMILO GraphicBooster has already proven itself to be pretty capable when hooked up to an external monitor, but a new beta driver now looks set to make the add-on even more convenient, and let you use it with the Sa 3650 laptops' own display. Better still, that apparently doesn't come at much, if any, expense to performance, but any other details (including word of availability) are unfortunately a bit light at the moment. Apple threatens accessory maker over "Podium" stand

AT&T Second line iPhone to clear out iPhone 3G inventory
BGR's AT&T Ninjas got their mitts on an AT&T internal presentation which seems to indicate that they are going to be unloading some 3G iPhones at $599 and $699 no commitment pricing (which is much lower than their previous no commitment prices) starting on March 26th. The onslaught of iPhone 3.0 features continues:
A developer has found that that tethering both via USB and Bluetooth is possible under the 3.0 beta developer release (of course, those of us with Jailbroken iPhones won't be too impressed with this). It isn't immediately clear how AT&T and the other carriers will be able to distinguish who is tethering and who isn't. Apple will have to coordinate the locking and unlocking with the carriers.

Intel SIMD Accelerator promises to boost MID performance
Intel isn't offering a whole lot of details on this one just yet, but the company has let out an early word of a new and improved SIMD Accelerator it's currently working on, which promises to boost the graphics performance of MIDs while also consuming ten times less power than the accelerators now used. The SIMD itself (or Single Instruction, Multiple Data) works by executing multiple computing instructions at once, while apparently allows for onscreen graphic images to be "done faster." News: Apple releases iPod shuffle 3G Software 1.0.1
Apple has released Software Version 1.0.1 for the third-generation iPod shuffle, the first update since the device’s release late last week. BeamBox Evolution R-1 pico available for pre-order, shipping April 1
BeamBox has just announced it's taking pre-orders for the Evolution R-1 pocket projector. If you've forgotten, the R-1 boasts an LCoS chip, with a brightness of 30 lumens, a 200:1 contrast ratio and VGA (640 x 480) resolution. The little guy has up to 4GB of onboard Flash memory, plus a microSD slot. It weighs in at about 175 grams, and will run you £260 (about $364), and is expected to ship on April 1st.

First PowerVR multi-core GPU for phones official
Imagination Technologies fulfilled early promises by detailing its first multi-core, smartphone-class graphics chip in the PowerVR SGX 5XTSeries. The SGX543MP is now known to come in at least a dual-core version and scales up to 16 cores depending on the version; the change lets the graphics scale from low-power devices like small phones up to gaming consoles and other very 3D-intensive devices.

AT&T offers iPhones without commitment or activation
AT&T is set to offer the iPhone 3G without a subscription commitment or activation at the time of purcahse, according to an internal presentation posted by the Boy Genius Report. Rogers change may push full-price iPhone upgrade
A Rogers internal notice obtained today by BGR suggests that existing iPhone owners may be asked to pay full price to upgrade for a likely hardware replacement this year. The Canadian cellular provider's memo notes that the period before a smartphone subscriber qualifies for the Hardware Upgrade Plan (HUP), or a discounted phone replacement, has been doubled from one to two years as of Tuesday.

You've got to hand it to them. They might not have a chance in hell of existing at the end of the year but they sure seem to be playing the business as usual face pretty well. In the midst of a huge lawsuit with one of the world's biggest (and litigious) companies, Psystar is forging ahead with new products. Their new compact desktop, which is cheaper than Apple but more expensive than a DIY type of machine, is now available to consumers through its website. Rumors of Sony Ericsson split heat up again

The Register thinks Imagination's SGX543MP video chip may go into a tablet
Those pesky tablet rumors won't die. Today's entry is from The Register who are reporting (via MR) on Imagination's new multicore graphics chips. Imagination PowerVR chips are the video chips currently inside Apple's iPhones and iPod Touches. Apple, of course, is also an investor in Imagination Technologies, as is Intel.

Iomega NAS gets BitTorrent support, some other stuff
Iomega announced several free upgrades to its StorCenter ix2 NAS yesterday, the most exciting of them being PC-less BitTorrent support and remote access capabilities, enabling uploading / downloading via FTP. As for the other upgrades, the company has added Apple Protocol support, jumbo frames to speed up those large file transfers, and folder quotas. All the upgrades are available through an Iomega update, and while the remote access is free for the first year, it'll cost you $9.95 every year thereafter. The 1TB ix2 can be yours for around $299, while the 2TB runs about $470.

Bitkom: Fallende Preise bei Internet- und Telefondiensten
Rund 29 Prozent der deutschen Internetnutzer haben im vergangenen Jahr von Preissenkungen ihrer Zugangsanbieter profitiert. Das ist das Ergebnis einer Umfrage der EU-Kommission. Nur in Griechenland und Luxemburg konnten sich mit etwa 30 Prozent mehr Anwender über sinkende Internetkosten freuen. IDC-Studie: Wirtschaftskrise fördert Linux-Verbreitung

Auf der gestrigen Apple-Präsentation, gehalten von Greg Joswiak, Apples Marketingchef für iPhone- und iPod-Marketing, wurden aktuelle Zahlen betreffs der iPhone-Verbreitung bekannt gegeben. Demnach wird das iPhone derzeit in 80 Ländern weltweit vermarktet. Seit Erscheinen des iPhone verkaufte Apple 17 Millionen Geräte (allein im Kalenderjahr 2008 waren es 10 Millionen) und zusätzlich 13 Millionen iPod touch. Insgesamt sind also zur Zeit 30 Millionen Geräte verkauft worden, die mit dem iPhone OS betrieben werden.

Apple iPhone 3.0 Event roundup
Well, the event is over, you can now smoke a cigarette or dip your fingers in ice if you were blogging the event like some of us. Apple's got their page up and we'll post the video as soon as it becomes available.
What this event said to us more than anything is that Apple is about executing. Sure, they are late to the game with many of these features, but they are executing them really well. Push notifications could have come a few months earlier. They could have sacrificed battery life for background applications but it wouldn't be the experience they wanted to deliver. Cut/copy/paste and search both seem to be done right.
They are also delivering most (sans stereo Bluetooth and MMS) of these features onto what will be 2+ year old original iPhones. Most phones don't even last 2 years but buying an original

OS 3.0: Bluetooth-Nachrüstung für Touch?
Die gestrige Vorschau auf die für Sommer erwartete nächste Version des Betriebssystems für das iPhone und den iPod touch lässt erneut über eine womöglich in Geräten der zweiten Touch-Generation verbaute aber bislang nicht aktivierte Bluetooth-Funktion spekulieren. Am Ende der Veranstaltung beantwortete Apple-Vize Phil Schiller die Frage, ob denn der iPod touch zukünftig Stereosound über Bluetooth übertragen könne mit den Worten "Some of that functionality can be unlocked".
Gewissheit darüber, ob die im iPod touch der zweiten Generation vermeintlich in dem für die Nike+ Funktionen verantwortlichen Chip versteckte Bluetooth-Funktion tatsächlich per Software-Update freigeschaltet werden kann, werden wir wohl erst mit erscheinen der neuen Systemsoftware erhalten.

Fujitsu melts faces and wallets with FLEPia, the first color e-book for general consumption
After years of teasing -- FLEPia was first announced in April of 2007, and first proven in 2006 -- Fujitsu has at last released its color e-book (or e-paper mobile terminal, as they'd like you to call it) to the masses. Featuring an 8-inch XGA screen capable of displaying 260,000 colors, along with Bluetooth, WiFi and up to 4GB of storage via SD card, and measuring less than half an inch thick, FLEPia's not just getting by on color alone. Fujitsu promises 40 hours of continuos use, and the unit can be operated by its touchscreen or the assortment of function buttons. An vielen Stellen hat Apple Veränderungen vorgenommen, doch glaubt man dem Dev-Team, wurde der Schutz vor Jailbreak-Tools zumindest in der Entwickler-Beta-Version nicht verstärkt. World's most expensive vacuum also claims title of world's gaudiest
You may think that the world's most expensive vacuum would be a Dyson or some other high-tech cleaning contraption, but that's apparently not the case, at least according to the vacuum authority that is the Guinness Book of World Records. No, the world's most expensive vacuum is apparently this otherwise ordinary Electrolux, which has been adorned with 3,730 Swarovski crystals by Polish designer Lukaz Jemiol and now commands the princely sum of £13,825 (or just under $20,000). Apple posts video of iPhone 3.0 keynote
