Discovery sues Amazon over Kindle, rushes reality show into production to cover trial
It's not exactly one of the usual suspects you'd expect to see taking umbrage with the Kindle, but it looks cable programming empire Discovery Communications has some issues of its own with the handheld, and it's now taking its complaints to court. Apparently, Discovery thinks that the Kindle infringes on one of its patents that covers the "secure, encrypted system for the selection, transmission, and sale of electronic books," which it received on November 20th, 2007 -- coincidentally just a day after the first Kindle launched on November 19th, 2007. Verizon readying subsidized HP laptops, Hub 2
We just got a pair of small-but-juicy Verizon rumors from a very reliable tipster: first, we hear that HP and Big Red are working together on subsidized WWAN-enabled laptops for launch in Q2. Exactly what machines will be involved can't be confirmed, but if we had our guess we'd say Big Red's got a cheap Mini 1000 on a two-year contract in the works, since these so-called "netbooks" are all the rage these days. Apple iPhone 3.0 Event roundup
Well, the event is over, you can now smoke a cigarette or dip your fingers in ice if you were blogging the event like some of us. Apple's got their page up and we'll post the video as soon as it becomes available.
What this event said to us more than anything is that Apple is about executing. Sure, they are late to the game with many of these features, but they are executing them really well. Push notifications could have come a few months earlier. They could have sacrificed battery life for background applications but it wouldn't be the experience they wanted to deliver.
They are also delivering most (sans stereo Bluetooth and MMS) of these features onto 2 year old original iPhones. Most phones don't even last 2 years but buying an iPhone ($599 at the time) means that you will have a 2 year old phone that is pretty on par with everything else out there currently. Not a bad price to pay IOHO.

Ausblick auf iPhone OS 3: Copy & Paste, MMS & Co.
Apple hat einen ersten Ausblick auf das für Juni erwartete iPhone-Betriebssystem 3.0 gegeben. Die Software wird abwärtskompatibel sein und auch auf vorherigen Modellen und dem iPod touch laufen. Insgesamt sollen die Geräte um 100 neue Funktionen erweitert werden, die wichtigsten und zugleich am längsten erwarteten davon sind sicherlich Copy und Paste sowie die Möglichkeit, MMS-Nachrichten zu versenden.
Apple wird zudem einen zusätzlichen Home-Screen mit einer analog zu der Funktion auf dem Mac aufgebauten Spotlight-Suche hinzufügen. Damit lassen sich die Apple-Programme auf dem iPhone durchsuchen, die Ergebnisse werden nach Art und Ursprung sortiert angezeigt.
Mit der Veröffentlichung der neuen Software kann man aller Voraussicht nach zusammen mit einer neuen iPhone-Generation im Juni rechnen, Besitzer von Geräten der 1. und 2. iPhone-Generation erhalten das Update dann wie gewohnt kostenlos über iTunes. Deutscher Wetterdienst setzt ab sofort NEC-Supercomputer ein
Der Deutsche Wetterdienst (DWD) in Offenbach wird am 19. März einen neuen Superrechner in Betrieb nehmen. Mit dem Vektorrechner SX-9 von NEC will der DWD bis zum Jahr 2010 die Rechenleistung um das 45-fache im Vergleich zu den Computern des Vorgängersystems steigern und so die Qualität von Wetter- und Unwettervorhersagen deutlich erhöhen. Damit sieht sich der DWD in der Lage, die Wetterprognose nicht nur für Deutschland, sondern auch für die Anrainerstaaten mit einer räumlichen Auflösung von 2,8 Kilometern zu berechnen. Dell Adamo to also come in $2,699 1.4GHz model with 3G
Dell's Adamo 13 might be a looker, but the 1.2GHz Core 2 Duo, integrated graphics, and 2GB of RAM found in the $1,999 model announced last night are fairly underwhelming, and it doesn't seem like the $2,700 higher-end configuration reported by Laptop is going blow any minds either: Dell Australia has it listed with a 1.4GHz ULV Core 2 Duo, 4GB of RAM, and a built-in 3G card. Nokia slashes 1,700 jobs due to "pruned" demand
Finland-based Nokia has just announced that they will cut 1,700 jobs in the corporate development and global functions departments. These cuts will equal about 1 percent of Nokia's entire workforce, and are more than double in number than earlier reports suggested. Samsung's first Android handset revealed?
Mr. Blurrycam, meet your worst nightmare: Samsung's first Android handset. This marvelous conglomeration of vaguely-defined pixels unveiled at a Samsung dealer show in Amsterdam is about all we've got to go on so far, but it looks to be the real deal. Apparently the phone will have a capacitive touchscreen, rock a 528MHz processor, have some beefy (but as-yet-undefined) internal storage and microSD expansion. We're also happy to hear the phone will (supposedly) have quad-band GSM, and will come in UMTS 900 and UMTS 2100 flavors for the US and Europe, respectively. Ericsson beschleunigt VDSL2 auf 500 MBit/s
Ericsson hat ein Verfahren entwickelt, um Datenübertragungsraten von VDSL2 um den Faktor 5 zu beschleunigen. Mit der als "Vectorised VDSL2" bezeichneten Technik hat das Unternehmen in einem Test bei einer Kabellänge von 500 Metern eine Geschwindigkeit von mehr als 500 MBit/s erreicht. Das theoretische Limit im Up- und Downstream des VDSL2-Standards lag bisher bei 100 MBit/s.

Es ist wieder einmal soweit: Apple veranstaltet ein großes Medien-Event und da die Hoffnung zuletzt stirbt, ist der Glaube an eine Tablet-Lösung aus Cupertino erneut stark. Seth Weintraub vermutet auf dem Computerworld-Blog, dass die heutige Veranstaltung nicht nur dazu dienen soll, das neue iPhone-OS vorzustellen, sondern viel mehr dahinter steckt. Apples neuer Mac mini hat eine bessere Ausstattung, auch wenn der Rechner von außen kaum Unterschiede zum Vorgänger aufweist. 80 Prozent der Deutschen wollen bei amtlichen Anliegen künftig die Behördenrufnummer 115 nutzen. Apple hat im Februar laut Zahlen der NPD Group 16 Prozent weniger Mac-Computer verkauft als im gleichen Monat des Vorjahres. Schwache Mac-Verkäufe im Februar, starker März erwartet
Daten der Marktforscher der NPD Group sind die Mac-Verkäufe im letzten Monat im Vergleich zum Februar 2008 deutlich eingebrochen. Um 16 Prozent sollen sie gesunken sein, dennoch rechnet Piper-Jaffray-Analyst Gene Munster mit 2 bis 2,2 Millionen verkaufter Macs im Zeitraum Januar bis März. DARPA, Air Force develop hydrogen-powered spy blimp
The Air Force has announced that it will do its part for economic stimulus by spending $400 million on a dirigible designed to float 65,000 feet above the Earth, where it will provide constant surveillance of an area (such as the Afghanistan-Pakistan border). ISIS (Integrated Sensor Is the Structure) is being billed as a cross between a satellite and a spy plane, kept aloft by helium and powered by hydrogen fuel cells that are recharged with solar panels. The thing will remain in place for up to ten years providing, as one Air Force scientist gushed, "constant surveillance, uninterrupted." If successful, the Air Force would like to see a whole fleet of these things.

Carbonite launches online backup service for Mac
Carbonite has expanded its online backup service to support Mac systems. Individual users or small businesses can automatically backup an unlimited amount of data. The software runs in the background, continually copying new or changed files to the company's servers. Data is encrypted when it leaves the local computer, where it is then transferred to the secure data centers using the SSL protocol.

Judge dismisses Broadcom patent lawsuit against Qualcomm, Broadcom keeps on suing
Broadcom has seen quite a few legal victories in its ongoing battle with Qualcomm, but it was dealt a bit of a setback on Friday when U.S. District Court Judge William Hayes shot down one of its most recent lawsuits. Apparently, Broadcom wasn't quite specific enough about the patents it was suing over this time around, which is something Qualcomm has been complaining about as far back as November, saying at that time that Broadcam has failed "to specify a single device, a single patent, a single license, or a single sale." All is not lost for Broadcom, however, as it just so happens to have a separate lawsuit against Qualcomm pending at the very same district court. Not surpr

Slowly but surely, the BeoVision 8 is creeping up into big screen territory. Castrade, previously known for the CV-MP01 pico (you remember: the one that famously fits inside a win glass) has just announced the CV-MP02, a larger but still decently small pocket projector.
