Aptera co-founder debuts EPIC 23e hybrid electric wake boat
It doesn't exactly have the same space age looks of the Aptera 2e he helped design, but this new EPIC 23e wake boat from Chris Anthony's Epic Boats shouldn't have any trouble attracting attention nonetheless, and not just because of its paint job. The key bit here is the boat's Flux Propulsion EVO 8.1 Marine Drive System, which allows for all-electric operation most of the time, with the gas engine only kicking in to power the generator that recharges the lithium ion batteries. According to the company, that should translate to about four hours of operating time and as much as a 50 percent reduction in fuel, not to mention a 90 percent drop in carbon monoxide emissions. Motion's J3400 rugged tablet PC dissected, loved up on video
Somebody is really geeked about Motion Computing's J3400 Rugged Slate Tablet PC. Not only have we found it dissected over at Gotta Be Mobile, but the InkShow gang have just released the first of two videos where they give the device their "fine toothed comb" treatment. The verdict? "It feels great," the reviewer enthuses. iPhone apps: FarFinder, boxee remote, Whrrl
FarFinder (free) allows users to log onto their Mac computer remotely and access files on any and all connected drives. Files can be saved to an iPhone and most can be opened and viewed on the devices itslef. FarFinder also supports Spotlight allowing users to search through all of their files. Apple claims no DRM protection on Shuffle controls
Apple has refuted recent claims that the new iPod shuffle integrates DRM technology to prevent third-party companies from making compatible products without paying fees. iLounge and the Electronic Frontier Foundation noted the presence of a chip behind the buttons on the in-line controls, leading to the presumption that the component provided authentication for the signal.

We'll hand it to Nextar here, the MA809 is sexy enough to roll with the hottest PMPs on the market today, but the pricing strategy needs a serious revision. AVerMedia outs Volar MAX USB HDTV tuner

Mac sales slide 16 percent in February
Sales of Mac computers fell dramatically in February, writes Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster. Figures released by the NPD Group reveal that Mac units dropped 16 percent year-over-year, a number coincidentally matching a decline in iPod sales. China's super buoyant, super small copper boats
Researchers in China, inspired by Mother Nature, have developed postage stamp-sized copper mesh boats, "some of the most buoyant" yet devised. Taking a page from both the shark and the lotus, the team applied a rough and uneven coating to the surface of the mesh, which reduces the vessel's contact with water. Next, a hydrophobic was applied, which keeps water from penetrating the porous material, "even when they are carrying a load," according to Dr Qinmin Pan, a chemist from Harbin Institute of Technology. Apple confirms presence of proprietary chip in shuffle headphones, licensing fee
A flurry of news broke out over yesterday regarding the proprietary headphones required by Apple's new iPod shuffle, and now that Monday's here and everyone's back in the office, some things are starting to get cleared up. Sprint's 2009 roadmap comes to light, packed with goodies
There aren't terribly many surprises in the latest roadmap docs leaked out of Sprint, but there are a couple -- and we finally have some target launch windows around a few of the more anticipates devices we've been expecting this year. Broadpoint.Amtech raises Apple estimates
Broadpoint.Amtech analyst Brian Marshall has raised EPS estimates for Apple, as well as the stock's price target. The latter has been boosted from $110 to $120, while FY09 EPS predictions have been shifted from $5.52 to $5.70. In FY10, EPS is expected to be $6.56 instead of $6.36. The stock continues to be classified under a Buy rating.

Intel threatens AMD with termination of x86 license within 60 days
Intel's been making noise about AMD's Globalfoundries manufacturing spinoff potentially violating the two companies' patent cross-licensing agreement for a while now, and it looks like things are escalating: AMD's latest SEC filing says that Intel's formally threatened to terminate the license if AMD doesn't make it better within 60 days. A Cincinnati, OH mother is suing Apple and 10 unnamed employees from the Apple retail store in Kenwood Towne Centre claiming that her son’s iPod touch caught fire in his pants pocket. Thanks to a fortuitous search on Google Ireland, friendly tipster Niall spotted this rather intriguing sponsored link for Dell Adamo. Instead of the vague "Learn More" promised by similar sponsored links in the States, the ad on Google Ireland says that we can "Discover the Love Story on 17/3." Gericht erachtet Vorratsdatenspeicherung als "nicht notwendig"
Das Verwaltungsgericht Wiesbaden hat die Vorratsdatenspeicherung als ungültig eingestuft. In einem Beschluss vom 27.02.2009 (AZ 6 K 1045/08.WI) sieht das Gericht in der Aufzeichnung der Telefon-, Handy-, E-Mail- und Internetnutzung der Bevölkerung einen Verstoß gegen das Grundrecht auf Datenschutz. Sie sei in einer demokratischen Gesellschaft nicht notwendig. Looks like MSI's trying some new things with its next generation of netbooks -- instead of the expected Atom N280 or the NVIDIA Ion platform, the new Wind U110 ECO pairs a 1.6GHz Atom Z530 and Intel's traditionally MID-oriented Menlow chipset with an ATI Mobility Radeon HD3200 to achieve nine hours of battery life. Fotoverwaltung Flickery 1.0 erschienen
Bereits im Mai vergangenen Jahres stellten die Entwickler von Eternal Storm die Beta-Version ihrer Software "Flickery" vor - ein Image-Client, mit dem sich Fotos auf Flickr ansehen, verwalten und hochladen lassen. Bis zum fertigen Programm ließ man sich viel Zeit, am vergangenen Wochenende erschien jedoch endlich die Version Flickery 1.0. Neue Mac OS X 10.5.7-Beta noch kein Release Candidate

OLPC-Chef kündigt XO-Laptop mit ARM-Prozessor an

Apple wegen explodierendem iPod Touch verklagt

Überzeugender Klang aus preisgünstigem 2.1-Soundsystem?
Mit dem S330D legt Edifier ein 2.1 Soundsystem vor, das sich hauptsächlich an Spieler richtet. Es kommt mit zwei Satellitenlautsprechern mit je 18 Watt sowie einem Subwoofer-Würfel mit 40 Watt Leistung. Damit lässt sich zwar kein Kinosaal beschallen, aber daraufhin ist das System auch nicht ausgerichtet. Für einen ordentlichen Klang am Computerarbeitsplatz ist die Edifier-Kombi aber durchaus sehr gut geeignet.

Kein Apple-Gerät ist so klein, dass sich nicht noch irgendein Min-Chip ausfindig machen könnte, dem allerlei böses angedichtet wird. In diesem Fall ist es 8A83E3, der schnell als "Authentifizierungschip" bezeichnet wird. Tatsächlich ist über die Funktion des Chips wenig bekannt, aber Apple hat beim iPod shuffle relativ wenig Möglichkeiten, die Zubehörhersteller mit dem "Made for iPod"-Programm zur Tasche zu bitten.

Amazon geht gegen Freischalt-Tool für Kindle vor

Looks like the latest Garmin Oregon nav unit is following in family footsteps by leaking out a little early -- listings for an Oregon 500 and Oregon 500t appear in the latest REI catalog. Third-party iPod shuffle headphones will require Apple-licensed authentication chip
Sigh, it looks like Apple's habit of squeezing iPod accessory manufacturers for license fees has now extended to freaking headphones -- iLounge is reporting that the new iPod shuffle can only be controlled by headphones with a special hardware authentication chip. That means that third parties will have to pay Apple for the privilege of making shuffle-compatible accessories, and you can bet they'll just pass that cost right on to consumers -- we wouldn't expect any cheap headphone adapters or inexpensive replacement headphones for this thing. iLounge calls this a "nightmare scenario" for iPod fans, and we're inclined to agree -- it's one thing for Apple to require the Made For iPod certification for accessories that interf

O2 plans to give away free iPhones (with cheeeep plan) in anticipation of new device in June
The Telegraph is reporting that O2 will now be giving away free iPhones with their lower cost plans in order to clear out inventory for the new iPhones which will be released this summer:
O2, which has exclusive rights to sell the iPhone in the UK, is believed to planning to give the eight gigabyte (GB) 3G iPhone away for free on £34.26 pay monthly tariffs from May.
At present the 8GB device costs £96.89 on the cheapest tariffs and is only free on £73.41 and £44.05-a-month contracts. The operator is also said to be planning to give away the 16GB on £44.05 per month contracts.

What is the 8A83E3 chip inside the iPod Shuffle headphones?
There seems to be a lot of brouhaha from iLounge and Boingboing over the revelation that the iPod Shuffle's new headphones contain a special new chip that may be some sort of hardware DRM. But maybe it is a controller chip for the Shuffle's headphone buttons? It also may be a way to communicate with Aliensno one is sure yet.
We hope it isn't some sort of DRM that controls what headphones or charger the Shuffles can use, but until someone with knowledge of the situation can sort it out, we're going to just sit by and watch..
