Cupcake Android update coming to G1 in April
Well, after weeks of speculations and false alarms, it looks like T-Mobile's officially saying the "Cupcake" Android update will hit the G1 sometime next month. That's at least the word according to the T-Mo spokeperson Pocket-lint got hold of -- who went out of his way to disclaim any connection with the upcoming launch of the HTC Magic. In any event, we're hoping all this bake time has fixed some of those bugs and lag problems, but we'll see in a few weeks.[Via

Wacom Intuos4 pen tablet spotted

Sony VP Ray Maguire claims UMD 'wasn't brilliant' for third parties, forgets we're living in the present
Apparently the folks at Sony Computer Entertainment UK are experiencing some time anomalies of late, with Senior VP Ray Maguire talking about PSP's much-abused UMD format in the past tense. It might not be the biggest blunder on earth -- he stated that "The UMD model wasn't brilliant for third parties," and it certainly hasn't been -- but with rumors all over about Sony dropping the format in the near future, it's not looking good for those little ill-fated discs. MIT battery tech recharges in seconds

Packard Bell drops "dot" netbook in favor of new, unannounced model
Well, it looks like Packard Bell's "dot" netbook just didn't capture that trademark Packard Bell flavor the company was looking for, as it has now officially ditched the netbook in favor of a new, as yet unannounced model. As you may recall, the dot was essentially just an original Acer Aspire One in disguise, with it packing an 8.9-inch display, an Atom N270 processor, 1GB of RAM, a 160GB hard drive, and an optional 3G module, among other standard fare. Unfortunately, Packard Bell doesn't seem to be saying anything at all about the new model just yet, with it only going so far as to tell Pocket-lint that there will be "some changes made to the brand." Indonesian carrier Telkomsel will launch the iPhone 3G on March 23, according to a new report. Yes, it looks goofy as hell, but we're sure Archos 5 owners aren't complaining about the new Snap-on TV DVB-T accessory -- not only will it allow you to watch live TV, it integrates with the DVR features of the unit to give you portable recording. Interestingly, although the Snap-on TV features dual tuners, they're used to increase reception quality, not to allow viewing of one channel while recording another, which is a bit of a bummer. iTunes 8.1 steht vor der Tür
Mindestvoraussetzung für die Synchronisierung des heute vorgestellten iPod shuffle 3G ist die noch nicht erschienene iTunes-Version 8.1. Hauptgrund für das Update dürfte die neue VoiceOver-Funktion - also die Sprachausgabe von Interpreten, Titeln und Wiedergabelisten. Vermutlich werden die Audio-Clips bereits in iTunes generiert und ähnlich wie die optionalen gesprochenen Menüs beim iPod nano beim Synchronisieren auf den iPod übertragen.
In einem Ausblick auf iTunes 8.1 kündigt Apple zudem Geschwindigkeitssteigerungen beim Laden großer Mediatheken, beim Stöbern im iTunes Store und beim Synchronisieren von Geräten sowie Genius für TV-Sendungen und das iTunes Plus-Format als Standardeinstellung für den Import von CDs an.

We were wondering why the new voice-enabled iPod shuffle even has a standard 3.5mm headphone jack since it's controlled by proprietary headphones, and we just got the answer: non-Apple headphones will require a special dongle that includes the new three-button controller, and Apple says it's working with third parties to bring other compatible 'phones to market. Dev Team releases free iPod touch 2G jailbreak
Well, that didn't take long -- hot on the heels of the $15 NitroKey Slipstream iPod touch 2G jailbreak, the Dev Team's released their free version. Apparently they'd been hoping to keep the jailbreak-enabling security hole a secret until the next version of the iPhone came out (so Apple wouldn't be able to fix the flaw), but NitroKey is apparently based on their code and they didn't want people paying to use it. Smartphone-Markt: Samsung wächst schneller als Apple
Gartner hat aktuelle Zahlen zur Entwicklung des weltweiten Marktes für Smartphones vorgelegt. Demnach hat es Samsung im vierten Quartal 2008 erstmals unter die ersten fünf Hersteller geschafft. Man files $1 million lawsuit against US Airways for lost Xbox 360
A Yale student is suing US Airways for $1 million in compensation for his lost Xbox 360 and the emotional toll of attempting to recover it. He claims he had an Xbox 360 with a "specialized hard drive" and other fancy components worth more than $1,000 (is that the kind with the really, really loud drive noise?) in his checked luggage, and when he went to pick up his luggage it was considerably lighter than before, with the Xbox 360 and components found as the only thing missing. The gang over at Surveyor Robotics have introduced SRV-1 Console, an open source Android app for operating robots based on the company's camera board and firmware. Using the G1's WiFi capabilities, the operator can access a live video feed from the robot and control the device using the handset's touchscreen and accelerometer. Sporting the same boring bristles and molded plastic of every other toothbrush produced this century, the Brush & Rinse has a slightly indented back, which lets you redirect water and well, brush and rinse. Unfortunately, the last time the thing was in the news, it was a prototype selling for $1,750, so we're happy to see it down to the much more reasonable pre-order price of $1.18 a pop -- though they need to presell 50,000 units before they can go into production. So sollen die Displays des aktuellen MacBook Pro 17” auch bei voller Helligkeit verhältnismäßig dunkel im Vergleich zum 15-Zoll-Modell sein. MacFixIt bietet hierfür folgenden Workaround an: Stellt man das Phänomen beim Kauf eines neuen MacBook Pro fest, sollte das Betriebssystem umgehend neu installiert werden. Dies behebt das Problem, wenn der Fehler zum Beispiel darin liegt, dass falsche Treiber geladen wurden. Darüber hinaus kann aber auch eine Rechtereparatur über das Festplattendienstprogramm helfen, falls der Fehler in einer nicht zugänglichen Systemdatei liegt.

Adobe stopft Sicherheitslücke in Acrobat
Adobe Systems hat in der Nacht zwei wichtige Aktualisierungen für Acrobat 9 und Adobe Reader 9 veröffentlicht. Stereo statt Surround-Sound in iTunes 8
Immerhin besser als Mono, könnte man sagen, doch wer 5.1-Surround-Sound erwartet, gibt sich damit natürlich nicht zufrieden. Schon im September letzten Jahres tauchten im Apple-Diskussionsforum Beschwerden auf, dass iTunes 8 keinen Surroundsound ausgibt. "Grafikprozessoren für alles Mögliche" - so könnte man General Purpose Graphics Processing Unit (GPGPU) übersetzen. In diese Kategorie fallen die aktuellen NVIDIA-GPUs, und die wollen eben nicht nur für viel Geld entwickelt, sondern auch in großen Stückzahlen verkauft werden. The bottom line is that the UMID M1 mbook that we've been secretly swooning over for weeks now may be further away from a US release than any of us Yanks would like. Vor einigen Tagen gab es schon diverse Meldungen im Internet, dass Nvidia den Preis der GeForce GTX 260 gesenkt hat, umso konkurrenzfähiger zur Radeon HD 4870 zu sein. Denn diese ist zwar meistens etwas langsamer als der Nvidia-Beschleuniger, kostet dafür aber ein gutes Stück weniger.

Linux Professional Institute überarbeitet Zertifizierungsprogramm
Das Linux Professional Institute prüft ab dem 1. April Kandidaten für die Zertifizierungen zum Junior Level Linux Professional (LPIC-1) und zum Intermediate Level Linux Professional (LPIC-2) nach neuen Kriterien. Die Zertifizierungsorganisation hat beispielsweise die Bandbreite der Themen bei der LPIC-1-Prüfung erweitert. Bei der neuen LPIC-2-Zertifizierung liegt der Schwerpunkt auf Fachkenntnissen zu Systemadministration und Netzwerktechnologien. SmartQ 5 gets peeped, for reals
We've been hearing all about the SmartQ 5 PMP / MID for a little while now, but someone's finally gotten their hands upon a real live device, and it's looking pretty cool. We still don't know a ton in the way of specs -- it's got a 4.3-inch, 800 x 480 touchscreen and built-in WiFi and Bluetooth, plus four actual hardware buttons -- nor do we know when it's going to be available, or how much it'll cost but it definitely appears to exist now! Citroen announces C-Crosser Exclusive PSP Edition SUV
Not a ton of details to go on here, but it looks like Citroen and Sony are set to team up on a PSP-themed version of the C-Crosser SUV. The C-Crosser Exclusive PSP Edition will come with a black PSP Slim, two games, a 4GB Memory Stick PRO Duo, and a special headrest speaker mount so rear-seat passengers can catch up on some awesome UMD movies. Tweetie 1.3 approved -- what are we supposed to do with this wagon full of torches and pitchforks?
Apple can be slow to act on user outcry at times, but it looks like the curious, discouraging case of Tweetie 1.3's App Store denial has come to a quick and painless resolution. EKS introduces Otus DJ controller
Finnish company EKS has introduced the Otus, a DJ controller featuring an array of fully-mappable buttons, knobs and sliders. The device also offers an illuminated 7.5-inch jog wheel with physical and virtual sensitivity adjustments, along with a capacitive touchpad. Hitachi also admits to LCD price fixing, will pay $31m fine
Funding that stimulus package just got ever-so-slightly easier -- Hitachi is the latest company to fess up to LCD price fixing, and as part of its deal with the US Department of Justice, it's paying a $31m fine. iPod touch 2G finally jailbroken with NitroKey
The iPhone Dev Team hackers have been teasing their redsn0w iPod touch jailbreak for what seems like forever now, but those you tired of waiting might want to check out the just-released NitroKey Slipstream. The $15 software does its thing on the 2.2.1 firmware, and automatically installs Cydia for all that jailbroken app action you crave -- including the new paid apps store. Gigabyte's M1028 netbook / tablet hits the FCC

Sony's durability test metes out years of punishment on the Vaio Z
Well, we can think of a few other devices we'd rather see get the smackdown, but we really got a kick out of the Vaio Z durability test videos on Sony's site -- and we think that you might too. Sure, the company stops a bit short of the Survival Research Labs treatment (nary a fireball, gunshot, or cloud of shrapnel in sight), but if you're anything like us your inner child can't help but smile at the thought of a robot dropping, slamming, or crushing a piece of consumer electronics.
