Pentax bridge digital camera image leaked ahead of PMA?
It appears the folks at Colorfoto.de have erred in our favor. In an article for the Olympus E-620, a seemingly random image has popped up of a currently unknown Pentax digital camera. What makes it especially interesting is the appearance of an EVF / LCD option -- which so far the company has not use for any of their models. It also bears a striking resemblance to a DSLR-esque "bridge" camera, which would make it Penny's first in that category. Looks like we've got another reason to anticipate next week's PMA.[Via 1001 Noisy Cameras]Filed under:

Verizon's LG VX9600 Versa hits store shelves today
Right on -- well, the predicted -- schedule, LG's unique Versa handset hits Verizon Wireless stores nationwide. We've specced, reviewed, and generally fondled this set enough to give us a pretty warm fuzzy feeling about it and if you've about made up your mind by now, plonk that cash down. Pricing is set at $199 on a two-year, $269 on one-year (both after online $50 rebate), and a whopping $449 if month to month is more your thing. Admittedly, while cool and we're really digging where it fits in the market, it is still a fe

Dell's Inspiron 1410 spec bump is too mild to notice
Okay, so maybe the newest Inspiron 1410 internals are something to celebrate if you're really looking for low-end, but you'll be hard pressed to find a real tech enthusiast that's jazzed about a 2GHz Core 2 Duo T6400 processor within a 14-inch laptop. At any rate, the aforementioned machine has been juiced (we're being liberal here) with 2GB of DDR2 RAM, a 14.1-inch WXGA display, 250GB of hard drive space, a DVD burner, Intel's GMA X3100 graphics, 802.11b/g WiFi and a sweet, colorful lid. Oddly enough, both the customize and buy links are currently dead, so it looks like you'll need some patience in order to buy one without talking to an actual huma

LG recalls 30,000 830 Spyder handsets for crappy 911 connections
While things like copy and paste, multimedia messaging and video calling are nice extras to have, there's really only one thing that's most important when it comes to a reliable cellphone: the 911 functionality. Evidently, around 30,000 LG 830 Spyder handsets aren't having the easiest time dialing for help, with a product recall noting that a huge swath of 'em have "difficulty sustaining a connection or have poor voice quality on calls to emergency 911." It should be noted, however, that LG's actually being really, really proactive here, as it has only received a

Rumored AT&T trade-in program could provide easy alternative to eBay
No question, you'll totally score more for your old handset by listing it on eBay or Craigslist than turning it over to AT&T, but wouldn't it be nice to have the option if you're really in a bind? According to Boy Genius Report, the aforesaid carrier is mulling the idea of implementing a trade-in program that would allow existing subscribers to put a "used value" towards the purchase of a new phone. While none of this has yet to be confirmed, we're told that any phone traded in must be less than two years old and in relatively good shape, and the new phone you're after won't have any subsidies attached; your trade-in value is the discount. Oh, and regardless of how awesome that

Nokia NAM 5800 XpressMusic pulled from NYC flagship store, replaced with Euro edition
While we did manage to eventually commandeer 3G on our Nokia flagship store-purchased NAM 5800 XpressMusic -- albeit not first without leaving the Chicago area -- The Nokia Blog went by the NYC store yesterday afternoon and found out the phone had been pulled from shelves. We put in a call to the store ourselves and confirmed that the NAM version is currently being eschewed in favor of the Euro-spec edition. No word on when it'll return, but we're still waiting anxiously for Nokia's official statement on the matter.Filed under:

IBM ThamesBlue supercomputer uncovers antediluvian English words
Granted, we could personally think of much more amazing ways to put supercomputers to work, but maybe there is some sort of benefit to humanity by knowing precisely what our ancestors' first words were. All that aside, the IBM ThamesBlue supercomputer has been tapped by language masters at the University of Reading in order to find that 'I,' 'we,' 'who' and the numbers '1,' '2' and '3' are amongst the most ancient across all Indo-European languages. Comically enough, it was also found that words like 'squeeze,' 'guts,' 'stick,' 'throw' and 'dirty' were also markedly archaic, which sure says a lot about how men in particular, um, don't

PowerBook fängt Feuer, Flamme fast zwei Meter hoch

Self-assembling nanoscale discovery could catapult data storage capacity
Ready to have your mind blown? What if 250 DVDs could fit onto a storage module no larger than a quarter? According to research conducted by brilliant geeks at the University of California at Berkeley and the University of Massachusetts Amherst, it's all within the realm of feasibility. Reportedly, an easily implemented technique "in which nanoscale elements precisely assemble themselves over large surfaces" could soon blow open the doors to significant improvements in data storage capacity. Without getting too Ph.D on you, the process essentially works by taking advantage of just how precise molecules can self-assemble. The end result has researchers achieving "defect-free arrays of nanoscopic elements with feature sizes as small as

NASA ruminating a robot-built lunar outpost to make way for manned missions
NASA commissioned a study on the feasibility of using little smallish tractor bots to prep a lunar outpost before the humans show up, and the research seems to show it as a good idea. The theoretical plan is for 330 pound mower-sized bots to show up on the moon and prep the surface for actual buildings, landing sites, roads and so forth. The robots are basically glorified tractors (or perhaps simplified tractors) so lunarnauts shouldn't expect a palace by the time they show up -- just a bunch of displaced dirt. Berms seem to be a big theme of construction, since a sort of "blast shield" is needed to make sure debris from takeoff and landing don't damage the actual settlement.[Via

MIT team develops solar car, bodly calls it Eleanor
When you name a custom built vehicle Eleanor, it better be good. It better be really good. But in fairness, the machine concocted by MIT's Solar Electric Vehicle Team is actually one of the more stellar creations we've seen on wheels. The newest iteration is a touch taller than prior versions and should be more comfortable to operate. Additionally, designers managed to increase the frontal area by 30 percent, all while keeping the drag area exactly the same. The juice comes from six square meters of monocrystalline silicon solar cells, and reportedly, the car can run all day long (providing the sun shines brightly the entire time) at a steady speed of 55 miles per hour. 'Apple must do a NetBook, now!'
Judging by your comments on our previous Hackintosh posts, you aren't going to like this one, onelittle.bit. CNet writer David Carnoy insists that Apple needs to roll out a Netbook or bad things will happen. These things include: everyone on the planet will install OSX on a Dell Mini 9, Apple is going to lose marketshare, and Apple customers will defect.
While we certainly fall into this group, except we are rolling our Hackintosh with an HP Mini -- soon to be

New Apple hardware arriving shortly
We've all seen this before. Leading up to a hardware refresh, little things start happening that seem to indicate that a release will come anyminute..now. Todays news is that 10.5.7 has kext files referring to Intel Nahalem (Core i7) processors (via AI) This would indicate that Apple's hardware refresh will happen in concert with 10.5.7. Nahalem chips are likely to be the muscle (CPU) behind Apple's next generation Mac Pros.
This is just the latest of many signs. NVIDIA iMac and Mini driver popped up at the beginning of the year - and videos of new Mac Mini hardware surfaced last week. Don't forget that Apple's 20-inch

Sudo robot begrudgingly makes sandwiches on command
Not that we haven't seen cooking robots before, but there's just something distinctly awesome about one that whips up a sandwich. Particularly one that kvetches first, and then gives in and makes a sandwich. Bre Pettis' Sudo robot isn't exactly sophisticated -- anything more than a simple grilled cheese is asking a bit much -- but even that should be plenty for the average college student. Check the read link to see it in action, and don't be surprised to see Subway pick this up and tweak it for use with multiple toppings and condiments.[Via Digg]Filed und

Curious ELPA remote sports built-in speaker
Well, here's a novel concept. Rather than bothering with turning up the volume on your ancient television, just crank up the volume on this here remote. Asahi Electric's block-shaped remote is about as unergonomic as it gets, and it sure won't bring along any advanced functionality, but we suppose that's sort of the point. The 30mm speaker connects to a wireless transceiver in order to blast out the audio, and while most everything else is lost in translation, do you really need to understand any more?[Via OhGizmo]F
