Apple has record quarter, guides lower, ho hum
Apple did better than expected in Q3 but guides lower. The Quicktime stream is still going on but here's the PR:

CUPERTINO, California—July 21, 2008—Apple® today announced financial results for its fiscal 2008 third quarter ended June 28, 2008. The Company posted revenue of $7.46 billion and net quarterly profit of $1.07 billion, or $1.19 per diluted share. These results compare to revenue of $5.41 billion and net quarterly profit of $818 million, or $.92 per diluted share, in the year-ago quarter. Gross margin was 34.8 percent, down from 36.9 percent in the year-ago quarter. International sales accounted for 42 percent of the quarter’s revenue.

Intel's Atom gets used in... servers?

Sure, we've been exited about Intel's Atom CPU being used in netbook-class devices, but UK ISP Bytemark apparently thinks the power-sipping chip has the horsepower to handle low-end server duties as well. For £45 ($89) a month, you can colo a 1.6GHz Atom box running Linux with 2GB of RAM and a pair of 100GB SATA drives -- not a terrible deal, and probably a damn sight more reliable than a pile of duct tape or a dead frog. Erster Apple Store in China eröffnet
Apple hat den ersten eigenen Retail-Store im Reich der Mitte eröffnet. Wie bei den meisten Apple-Stores zeigt sich die Fassade im schicken Alu-Look, im Innern befindet sich eine imposante Glastreppe. LG Electronics meldet deutliche Umsatzsteigerung
Der südkoreanische Elektronikkonzern LG Electronics hat, getrieben von guten Absatzzahlen für Mobiltelefone und Flachbildschirme, für das zweite Quartal 2008 eine Umsatzsteigerung von 22,1 Prozent gemeldet. Kein Putsch: Yahoo einigt sich mit Icahn
Yahoo hat sich mit seinem Großaktionär Carl Icahn geeinigt, der bei der kommenden Jahreshauptversammlung eigentlich den Aufsichtsrat stürzen wollte. Eine von Icahn gebildete Gruppe hätte die Führung im Aufsichtsrat übernehmen, Yahoo zerschlagen und die Suchmaschinensparte an Microsoft verkaufen sollen. Der für den 1. Deutsche Teams bei RoboCup-WM erfolgreich
Bei der dieses Jahr in China ausgetragenen RoboCup-WM schnitten die teilnehmenden deutschen Teams in den Finalspielen am Wochenende in mehreren Wettbewerben erfolgreich ab. In der dieses Jahr das letzte Mal ausgetragenen Aibo-League sicherte sich das "German Team" den Weltmeistertitel, und im Finale der "Humanoid League" setzte sich das deutsche Team "NimbRo" gegen das japanische "Team Osaka" durch.

Udo Vetter überrascht uns mit diesem kurzen Eintrag in seinem immer lesensweten LawBlog:

CCC: Hackerparagraph gefährdet den IT-Standort Deutschland
Im Rahmen einer Verfassungsbeschwerde hat der Chaos Computer Club (CCC) die Auswirkungen der Strafrechtsänderung des sogenannten Hackerparagraphen untersucht und die Ergebnisse dem Bundesverfassungsgericht übermittelt. Motorola hat beim US-Gericht Cook County, Illinois, eine Klage gegen einen ehemaligen Mitarbeiter eingereicht, der jetzt bei Apple arbeitet. Hacking-Tool für iPhone-Firmware 2.0 verfügbar

Pwnage Tool 2.0.1 Available
As expected, the Dev Team just released the version 2.0 of its tool kit to jailbreak and SIM-unlock the iPhone.
Hereafter is a summary of what can be achieved with this tool kit:
- Jailbreak + activation + SIM-unlocking of iPhone 1G + Firmware 1.x.x and 2.0
- Jailbreak + activation of iPhone 3G and iPod Touch with Firmware 2.0
Jailbreak allows you to use other applications than those available on the AppStore. The new version of Pwnage Tool includes Cydia, a new installation tool for third-party applications. SIM-unlocking is still not available for iPhone 3G, and one will have to wait a bit longer before being able to use the iPhone with any SIM card.

Hereafter is a procedure to save money and use a device not commercially available yet.
I was lucky to get an iPhone 3G 16 GB last Thursday. As I could not find any dock for the iPhone 3G, I took my Dremel and decided to modify the dock shipping with the Bluetooth iPhone headset. Once polished, it looks like brand new and clean, and this is a substantial money saving. :)
To reduce the price of the iPhone, Apple has removed the peripheral and devices shipped with the first version of the mobile, as they did it in the past with the iPod. If you purchase the new Bluetooth iPhone headset, which is now cheaper, it does NOT contain the dock anymore. So the "bidouille" from Goulwen is most likely the best way to follow for most of us, to avoid buying a

Price-Fixing Agreement between AMD/ATI and NVidia?
According to the National Law Journal, one of five national, high-tech price-fixing cases pending in San Francisco district might well reveal important information for all users. In June, we were reporting about a new TruePower battery from Fastmac and dedicated to MacBook Pro 15". Its nominal capacity was higher than the one offered by Apple, and its stability over time is indeed superior to the original one.
So after 60 cycles, and a complete recalibration, we obtained the following results:

iPhones sold out eerywhere except 3 stores!
WowIf you wanted to wait out the lines and pick up an iPhone this week, we have some bad news for you. It probably ain't going to happen. Of all of Apple's US stores only three still have iPhones leftand each one of these only as one model. If you are looking to pick up the 8Gb iPhone you might want to get your plane ticket not because the only store selling them is the Honolulu, Kahala store in Hawaii.
Not to worry though, if you want a 16Gb black one. Just head to Pleasonton, California.
Oh and if you are looking for a white iPhone, just queue up at the Apple Fifth Avenue flagship store in New York.

Die üblichen Verdächtigen (Sudoku, Poker, Rennspiele) sind bereits für das iPhone erschienen und verschiedene Spielefirmen machen sich Gedanken, wie sie ihre leicht schimmeligen Lizenzen noch einmal zu Geld machen können.
