Dropbox iPhone Sneak Peek

Spotify for iPhone gets thumbs up from Apple, subscription music with offline playlists is a go
Streaming and subscription music services are a dime a dozen on iPhone, and they seem to get past Apple's app store approval hurdles with relative ease. Dell, HP join Microsoft in fighting Word injunction

Apple, French gov't. to meet on iPhone explosions
A regional commercial director for Apple will meet with France's consumer affairs minister on Friday, Reuters reports. The pair are set to discuss a series of incidents, in which the touchscreens on several iPhones allegedly shattered with no obvious cause. At least two such cases have been confirmed, which in both circumstances injured device owners with flying glass.

Angesichts des morgen erscheinenden großen Upgrades auf Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard ist die Aktualisierung auf Aperture 2.1.4 zwar nur ein kleinerer Schritt, bringt aber dennoch mehrere Verbesserungen mit sich. Malware detection in Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard
Recently, there have been Trojan horses and other malware that have cropped up for OS X, and while for the most part they have just been a source of frustration, they pose a security risk. Apple has put some effort into malware detection in Snow Leopard, and users should see some form of warning when they've encountered a program or installer that contains a virus, Trojan horse, or other malware.

Israeli iPhone launch hampered by delays
The launch of the Israeli iPhone continues to be beset by problems, a regional website notes. Spotify streaming music app-roved by Apple
We would have lost money on this bet. Spotify, the European (and soon global) streaming, "all you can eat" music application has been approved by Apple for the iPhone App Store. This is significant because Spotify caches streams as well and allows people to download and play paid-for music. Apple greenlights Spotify iPhone app

Apple WebKit boffin takes Web Standards development hot seat
Apple’s WebKit has taken a higher profile in Web Standards terms, following the appointment of the company’s WebKit manager, Maciej Stachowiak, to the World Wide Web Consortium's HTML Working Group.
Stachowiak has become a co-chairman of the group standardizing HTML, giving Apple a higher-profile role at a crucial time for development of the language used to build Web pages.
Until now the HTML Working Group had been led by IBM's Sam Ruby and Microsoft's Chris Wilson, who has stepped down to be replaced by Apple’s Stachowiak and also Paul Cotton, who manages the Microsoft Web services standards team.

FCC formally launches inquiry into wireless competition
Well, we can't say we didn't see this one coming. At today's meeting, the FCC has said that it will be launching a formal inquiry into the wireless industry and specifically into certain business practices of the big four: AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile USA , and Verizon Wireless. The commission hasn't yet detailed exactly how they're going to go about this, but you can bet they'll be looking into exclusivity deals between handset manufacturers and carriers. And who knows? They might be interested in the whole iPhone / AT&T / Google Voice conundrum, especially if it turns out that AT&T had a hand in dissing the app. Accor

Sony Alpha 850 full-frame DSLR given the hands-on treatment
Sony debuted three fairly high-end cameras earlier today, but there's no question that the full-frame, 24.6-megapixel Alpha 850 is the flagship of the lot, and sure to garner the most attention (if not necessarily the most purchases). It’s all about mind-share, and Apple’s mojo’s rising with UK computer buyers flocking to the company’s retail outlets when they want to buy a new PC, or should we say, Mac.
Don’t believe us? Then mosey over to independent consumer’s association title, Which? Computing, which has declared Apple Retail Stores to be the favourite choice for British consumers looking to buy a new computer.

Running OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard: installation play by play
Snow Leopard is finally here! I just received my copy, and after creating a full Time Machine backup of my system, I went ahead with the install process. My main computer is a 17" Unibody MacBook Pro, 2.66GHz with 4GB RAM and a 7200RPM 320GB hard drive that is running OS X 10.5.8. Since I use this machine for most of my work I was a little nervous about how the revamped underpinnings of Snow Leopard would interact with the various programs I rely on; therefore, the first thing I did was ensure my backup was functional and accessible so I could restore to Leopard if necessary. I then opened Disk Utility and ran a drive verification on the boot volume, to be sure the drive was functioning properly before continuing.

We don't see much of Jitterbug in these parts, though we do love the premise: a simple handset with a nostalgic name designed expressly to not excite Grandma so much. Nokia N900 running Maemo 5 officially €500 in October
In backwards order, Nokia has finally launched the N900 after we've already seen a review and countless leaks. Nevertheless, it's good to have the new Maemo 5 MID out in the open and official-like. The specs include a (resistive) touchscreen, sliding QWERTY, 32GB of on-board storage expandable to 48GB via microSD, and 5 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics. Better yet, it brings the power of the ARM Cortex-A8, up to 1GB of application memory, and OpenGL ES 2.0 graphics acceleration to make quick work of polygons and what Nokia promises will be a "PC-like experience on a handset-sized device." As expected, it'll be on display at Nokia World next week before heading to select markets in October for €500.

ATi Radeon HD 4770: Verfügbarkeit wird besser
Mit der Radeon HD 4770 (ComputerBase-Test) erlebte ATi eine Art Debakel. Doch die Hardware war dieses Mal nur indirekt der Schuldige, denn die Grafikkarte war für den angepeilten Preis von etwa 90 Euro sehr gut. Denn die Karte ist flott, angenehm leise, bietet eine niedrige Leistungsaufnahme unter Last und war günstig.

Not that we had any doubt but Microsoft has made it official: Xbox 360 price cuts are coming Friday. The entry-level Arcade will remain at $200 while the top end Elite will drop to $300 from $400. Gartner: Halbleitermarkt schrumpft 2009 nur um 17 Prozent
Gartner erwartet, dass der weltweite Umsatz der Halbleiterindustrie 2009 um 17,1 Prozent gegenüber dem Vorjahr auf 212 Milliarden Dollar zurückgehen wird. Mobiler Datenverkehr: Note- u. Netbooks als Wachstumstreiber
Noch bis 2014 soll der mobile Datenverkehr rasant wachsen, das zeigt die Kristallkugel der Marktforscher von ABI Research. In Abweichung von anderen Prognosen sehen sie den größten Wachstumstreiber dabei aber nicht bei den Smartphones mit und ohne Apfel. Sondern mobile Rechner mit USB-Modems oder PCMCIA-Karten sollen dazu führen, dass bis 2014 ein Datenverkehr von ca. 1,6 Exabyte/Monat mobil generiert werden soll. Heute machen die mobilen PCs laut ABI zwei Drittel des Traffics aus, dieser Anteil soll sich in den nächsten sechs Jahren auf 50 Prozent ausbauen, wobei 4G-Modems für den Durchbruch sorgen sollen.

Die Nachrichtenangentur AFP meldet mittlerweile ein halbes Dutzend neuer Fälle von zersplitterten iPhone-Displays in Frankreich. Die zuständige Verbraucherschutzbehörde DGCCRF untersucht die Fälle, und auch die Verbraucherschutzkommission der EU hat sich bereits eingeschaltet (wir berichteten). Don't let your instinctual attraction to glossy items fool you. While the PJD2121 pico projector on the right is certainly the shiniest, it's ViewSonic's WPG-350 wireless gateway that we're digging the most. Assuming you've pre-installed the appropriate software onto the pertinent Windows / OS X machine, connect the bridge to a VGA display of some sort, and stream all the 1024 x 768 presentation content you want over 802.11b/g/n WiFi. GPU to Be 570x Faster in 2015
According to Jen-Hsun Huang, NVidia CEO, GPGPU is the future. He expects his company to deliver by 2015 GPU that could be up to 570x faster than the current flagship we know. According to its data, CPU performance should only triple in the meantime. So, according to NVidia, the future of computing would be a GPU associated to a CPU for some basic functions.
Of course, we would have been surprise to ear a different message from NVidia, and as usual we will wait and see how such predictions/pretentious statements will translated in 5-6 years. For sure, this is typically the type of comments expected to convince investors to keep supporting the company in this difficult economic environment.

Adobe Does Not Plan to Upgrade CS3 for Supporting Snow Leopard
This news might make many users of Adobe Creative Suite unhappy. The company announced that they do not plan to release an upgrade of a patch that would fix some potential issues when running CS3 on a Snow Leopard-based Mac. They do not pretend that there will be problem (stability, etc.) but they do not want to support the CS3 further, giving no other choice to CS3 users than upgrading to CS4. In other words, if it will cost you 30 € to upgrade Mac OS X to Snow Leopard, it will cost you 900 € more to switch from CS3 to CS4. If one can understand that Adobe does not want to invest too much resources in potentially patching a suite not sold anymore, we doubt that customers would appreciate such short lifetime for expensive applications. What would Mac users say if Apple decided to stop releasing security update for Leopard or Tiger because Snow Leopard is released

With two days left until Snow Leopard hits the streets, major publications are starting to release their Snow Leopard reviews.
For what it is worth, I've been running Snow Leoaprd through the last few builds. It just feels SNAPPIER™.
The net effect for most people will be the same as a point update coupled with a faster machine. A real deal for $25.
I don't think we are going to see the true benifit of Apple's two years of work for another few months.

Vonage iPhone app submitted, being vetted for technical issues
It looks like Vonage is looking to get its own iPhone application through the App Store approval process. According to Apple spokesperson Natalie Kerris, the application has been submitted but there are still some technical issues to be resolved.
Vonage would be the second high profile VoIP application on the iPhone after Skype along with many lower profile apps like Nimbuzz and iCall. Apple's placement of Google Voice into App Store purgatory has fueled a lot of industry critism and an FCC investigation.
Apple has stated time and again that it can't let VoIP applications go over AT&T (or other carrier networks). Jailbroken iPhones can circumvent this art

Snow Leopard. Even the name seems to underpromise -- it's the first "big cat" OS X codename to reference the previous version of the OS, and the list of big-ticket new features is seemingly pretty short for a version-number jump. Vonage iPhone app submitted, being vetted for technical issues
It looks like Vonage is looking to get its own iPhone application through the App Store approval process. According to Apple spokesperson Natalie Kerris, the application has been submitted but there are still some technical issues to be resolved.
Vonage would be the second high profile VoIP application on the iPhone after Skype along with many lower profile apps like Nimbuzz and iCall. Apple's placement of Google Voice into App Store purgatory has fueled a lot of industry critism and an FCC investigation.
Apple has stated time and again that it can't let VoIP applications go over AT&T (or other carrier networks). Jailbroken iPhones can circumvent this art

Video: Pocket Pain Doctor is the worst iPhone app. Ever.
The Pocket Pain Doctor is an iPhone app "guaranteed to invigorate your mind" and rid you of such pesky things as fatique, drowsiness and acne. Of course, it also has all the telltale signs of a swindle: fake trademark claims on the terms Bluwave and Redwave (which belong to Starkey Labs (for hearing aids) and American Banknote (RFID tags), respectively), "clinical proof" that has nothing to do with the product, and the faux sophistication of using "exacting nanometers" to adjust the, uh, brightness. Cherry on the cake? It's made by the same creepy one-man clown show responsible for the Pocket Cemetery app.
