Current iPods disappear in advance of Sept. event
All current iPods SKUs are being discontinued, sources in Apple's Authorized Reseller network claim. Nokia N900 now giving Germany and Italy a way to pre-order
Now that Nokia's Maemo-powered N900 is looking mighty nice and official, the company's Germany and Italian arms have no problem going ahead and taking your hard-earned Euros in exchange for a pre-order. Both sites are actually listing it for €599 (US $860), or €99 more than what we heard yesterday. A pretty huge discrepancy, to be sure, but it's not unlike Nokia to have a flagship phone fluctuate in price. Apple posts NRU 1.0, ODBC Admin Tool updates
Although the operating system has only just been released, Apple has already posted two networking-related updates for Mac OS X Snow Leopard. The first, Network Registration Update 1.0, is specifically intended for Snow Leopard Server. It is a 24.8MB download, and fixes a problem with duplicate serial number alerts on servers using multiple interfaces.

Apps: Sync'Em, Speed Download, Hydra
Sync'Em 1.4 ($50) is an application for syncing Exchange, Google and Apple contact and calendar information. A new setup assistant has been added in this release which replaces the advanced setup user interface. Microsoft organizes secret "screw Google" campaign
Microsoft has allegedly organized an anti-Google campaign, referred to by several insiders as "screw Google" meetings, according to DailyFinance. Purported Canon EOS 7D poster, lenses turn up online
Well, it's nearly become an annual event at this point, but it looks like those patiently waiting for a Canon EOS 7D now have a bit more fodder to consider, with a purported new poster and some new lenses for the camera recently turning up online. Chronos readies iPhone app, new SOHO titles
Chronos has announced forthcoming updates to SOHO Notes and SOHO Organizer, bringing both of the programs up to version 8. 1080p Android demo'd, set-top boxes prepare for a new master

Don’t underestimate Apple’s Chinese iPhone deal
We’ve noticed our reports detailing Apple’s continued negotiations to introduce the iPhone into China haven’t quite captured the collective attention of readers, and fresh analysis once again reinforces just why the deal’s so important.
As noted previously today, China Unicom and Apple have at last confirmed a three-year deal to offer the iPhone in the world’s most populous country. Subsequent to this, Broadpoint AmTech analyst, Brian Marshall has issued fresh estimates indicating Chinese iPhone sales will account for 15-20 per cent of Apple’s global iPhone sales next year.

Running OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard: Initial Impressions and Review
Take any used car and tune it up, put new tires and brake systems on it, and rebuild the engine and transmission. When you are done it will feel like a new car even though it looks the same. This is what Apple has done with Snow Leopard: Functionally, it is the same OS as we've all seen in Leopard besides a few new features, but under the hood things have been optimized to a great extent. The Terminator auch Lite im App Store
Wir hatten vor einiger Zeit, Ende Mai, bereits auf die Ankunft eines weiteren Terminator-Spiels hingewiesen. Big Head Games und der amerikanische Comicverlag Dark Horse hatten den Arcade-Shooter The Terminator feilgeboten. Das damalige Angebot ist aktuell nicht mehr akut, wohl aber gibt es jetzt eine Lite-Variante des Titels, deren Quickplay-Modus auf 3:30 Minuten limitiert ist.

Apple-Tablet: Neue Prototypen-Gerüchte
Die US-Webseite Gizmodo frischt die etwas eingeschlafenen Gerüchte um einen kommendem Tablet PC von Apple auf. Laut einer absolut zuverlässigen Quelle wurden in einem chinesischen Werk Prototypen mit 13 und 15 Zoll Bildschirmgröße gesichtet, einer davon soll unter Mac OS 10.5 betrieben worden sein. Unabhängig davon wird auch ein Gerät mit 10 Zoll Displaygröße erwartet.
Für unseren Geschmack wären drei verschiedene Bildschirmgrößen allerdings etwas zu viel des Guten. Gut möglich, dass es sich um sehr frühe Prototypen für eine Usability-Studie handelt und Apple sich für eines davon entscheidet oder bereits entschieden hat.

DJ Hero gets sized up by Mixmaster FCC
Activision's DJ Hero controller hasn't exactly been making itself scare since its debut way back in May, but those looking for their closest look at it yet need look no further than the FCC, which recently got its hands on the device for the usual tests and dissection. NEC rumored to want in on Casio Hitachi joint venture

Reports of iPhones exploding, starting fires and killing people in cold blood have been around since the inception of the handset. They've also been relatively sporadic, seemingly short on evidence, and Apple hasn't given complaints much credence or response. Bericht: Gebraucht-PCs dürfen mit aufgeklebtem Echtheitszertifikat verkauft werden
Wie die Fachhandelspublikation ChannelPartner berichtet, hat das Oberlandesgericht Frankfurt im Streit zwischen Microsoft und einem Händler zugunsten des letzteren entschieden (Aktenzeichen 2-6 O 117/08). Demnach ist der Verkauf eines gebrauchten Computers mit Microsoft-Echtheitszertifikat auf dem Gehäuse auch dann erlaubt, wenn dessen Festplatte die ursprünglich aufgespielte OEM-Software nicht mehr enthält und ihm kein Datenträger mit dieser Software beigefügt ist. Der Verkäufer begeht nach Ansicht des Gerichts weder eine Urheberrechtsverletzung noch zielt er darauf ab, eine illegale Vervielfältigung der Software zu ermöglichen.

PS3 Slim already sold out at many a retail store
The fine folks at GameSpot called around in San Francisco to find that many of their local GameStops and Best Buys have been selling the PS3 Slim, but some have already sold out of their first shipments. Our own calls to a few New York GameStops showed that they'd sold out of their first shipments as well (so much for that September 1 ship date, huh?) and were expecting their next shipment early next week. We also know plenty of folks who've had no trouble scoring one online, but who knows how long that supply will last. How about you, any luck tracking down this not-so-elusive console? China Unicom und Apple haben sich nach längerem Ringen nun doch auf eine Vertriebsvereinbarung für das iPhone in China geeinigt. Sure looks like we stirred up a can of worms when we noted Adobe’s intention not to test Adobe CS3 for Snow Leopard support, and the company’s seeming insistence it wouldn’t devote resources to ensuring the premium-priced essential design software would work with the new OS.
Adobe shifted position slightly on this, with the company’s John Nack offering frequent updates to the originally stated position - now an independent test seemingly indicates there’s few potential problems (none found so far, as far as we have been able to discern) using the 2.5-year old software with Snow Leop

Gizmodo: 10, 13, 15-inch Mac OSX tablets coming
Gizmodo has a pretty big one this morning. They claim that Apple is not only building the often talked about 10-inch tablet, but they are also developing much bigger tablets in 13 and 15-inch varieties. These tablets are clad in aluminum but in the shape of very large iPhones (gen 1?).
The machines were spotted in a factory in China (not Foxconn) and their source wasn't sure how far these were along. One could speculate that if they are in China they are being fitted for production. Their source said the company where they were spotted had a tight relationship with Apple. Quanta has been the rumored manufacturer of Apple touch screen tablet products for months.

An US-Flughäfen dürfen Laptops weiterhin unbegrenzt beschlagnahmt werden
Das amerikanische Department of Homeland Security (DHS) hat neue Richtlinien für die Durchsuchung und Beschlagnahme von Laptops und anderen elektronischen Geräten an der amerikanischen Grenze erlassen. Das gab jetzt Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano in einer Pressemitteilung bekannt. Bei Novell läuft nur Linux gut
Linux legt zu, der Rest verliert - so kann man den Bericht für das dritte Steuerquartal von Novell zusammenfassen. Die Umsätze aus Linux-Produkten haben nach Unternehmensangaben um 22 Prozent gegenüber demselben Quartal des Vorjahres zugelegt und die 40-Millionen-Dollar-Grenze (28 Millionen Euro) überstiegen. Der Nettoumsatz des gesamten Unternehmens schrumpfte allerdings gegenüber dem Vorjahresquartal von 245 Millionen (rund 171 Millionen Euro) auf 216 Millionen Dollar (150 Millionen Euro). Apple Regent Street is bigger than Harrods
Apple’s UK retail stores are already the apple of computer consumer’s eyes - now the company’s flagship Regent Street store takes more cash per square foot than the world’s most prestigious department store, Harrods, new data claims.

Apple iPhone crosses the wall and breaks into China - confirmed (at last)
China Unicom and Apple this morning confirmed the carrier will offer two versions of the iPhone in the world’s most highly-populated country, China.
The news follows months of rumours to this effect, with the two companies seemingly locked into discussions regarding revenue-sharing arrangements. It seems Apple lost the battle on that one, so keen was it to gain a foothold in the booming market.
The carrier will offer two different "3G iPhones" to its 141 million subscribers and it will buy the phones wholesale from Apple.

Improvements in Mac OS X 10.6 aid users with physical disabilities Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) introduced a host of features that made using a Mac easier for people with physical disabilities. Among its key improvements was VoiceOver, a screen reader that narrated whatever was on the Mac’s display. Im monatlichen Report der Spezialisten für mobile Marketing AdMob haben diese sich diesmal auf das Thema "App Usage" konzentriert. Während iPhone- und Android-Nutzer durchschnittlich zehn Apps pro Monat herunterladen, sind das beim iPod 18 pro Monat. 2. Dells zweites Quartal übertrifft Erwartungen von Analysten
Dell hat im zweiten Quartal (bis 31. Juli) des Geschäftsjahrs 2010 einen Nettogewinn von 472 Millionen Dollar oder 0,24 Dollar je Aktie erwirtschaftet. For instance, you can select a file in the Finder, then navigate to Finder -> Services -> Mail -> Send File, and the file will be attached to a new email message, just waiting for an address and delivery. Or select a chunk of text on a Web site in Safari, then choose Safari -> Services -> Make New Sticky Note, to create a new note containing that selected text.

Die Ersten sollen die Letzten sein: Als einzige durch eine Vorstellung auf der WWDC ausgezeichnet, war das System des Navi-Anbieter TomTom nun tatsächlich eine der letzten aus dem Wettbewerberkeis, die in App-Form erhältlich wurde. Die TomTom-Lösung basiert auf Kartenmaterial von TeleAtlas, nutzt die Funktion "IQ Routes", um die Fahrzeit einer Route aus den ermittelten Durchschnittsgeschwindigkeiten anderer TomTom-Nutzer zu berechnen. Überdies kennt die App stationäre Blitzer in 11 europäischen Ländern. Natürlich unterstützt das Programm App Rotation und Zoom per Multitouch.
Das DACH-Paket kostet 69,99 Euro, Karten für ganz Westeuropa schlagen mit 99,99 Euro zu Buche. Weitere Apps gibt es für Australien (62,99 Euro), Neuseeland (74,99 Euro) sowie die USA inklusive Kanada (79,99 Euro). Die Navigationssoftware läuft auf dem iPhone 3G und 3GS.

Blu-ray-Laufwerke nur in 3,6 Prozent der PCs
Gemäß einer Studie von iSuppli werden in diesem Jahr nur 3,6 Prozent aller verkauften PCs mit einem Blu-ray-Laufwerk ausgeliefert. Immerhin wird bis 2013 ein Anstieg auf 16,3 Prozent prognostiziert, womit die DVD in diesem Zeitraum als führendes optisches Medium abgelöst werden könnte.

Twitter and Facebook for Xbox Live will be free for Gold members, 'free trial' for Silver
This shouldn't really come as too much of a surprise, but anyone wanting to enjoy Twitter and Facebook on Xbox Live will have to pony up for Gold member subscription, the same premium prerequisite currently needed for Netflix Instant Watch and pretty much all online gaming. WPA networks cracked in just under a minute, researchers claim
To think it was just a few months ago that we thought taking 15 minutes to crack WPA encryption was a feat. Researchers from Kobe University in Japan are claiming they can best that by a wide margin by cracking any WPA-protected connection using the TKIP algorithm within just one minute flat. Apple WebKit boffin takes Web Standards development hot seat
Apple’s WebKit has taken a higher profile in Web Standards terms, following the appointment of the company’s WebKit manager, Maciej Stachowiak, to the World Wide Web Consortium's HTML Working Group.
Stachowiak has become a co-chairman of the group standardizing HTML, giving Apple a higher-profile role at a crucial time for development of the language used to build Web pages.
Until now the HTML Working Group had been led by IBM's Sam Ruby and Microsoft's Chris Wilson, who has stepped down to be replaced by Apple’s Stachowiak and also Paul Cotton, who manages the Microsoft Web services standards team.

Spotify streaming music app-roved by Apple
We would have lost money on this bet. Spotify, the European (and soon global) streaming, "all you can eat" music application has been approved by Apple for the iPhone App Store. Facebook 3.0 joins Spotify on the App Store
Oh, what a day - hot on the heels of the approval of Spotify in Europe today, Apple has at last approved Facebook 3.0.
Approval took two weeks, but following this wait the app is now available on the App Store, claims developer, Joe Hewitt. Hewitt is the developer who lambasted Apple recently and called for the removal of the approval process.

Sony Alpha 500 DSLR gets a hands-on
Sony's announcement of the three Alpha line cameras just came today -- but we're already seeing plenty of them. Coby's netbooks seemingly real, taking pre-orders
Sure -- we haven't seen or heard anything about Coby's netbook line since way back in January at CES, but that didn't stop them from showing up for pre-order, did it? Color us a little surprised, but here they are. Two models have appeared on Amazon for pre-order. The 12.1-inch Coby NMPC1220XPBLK apparently boasts a 1024 x 800 resolution, a 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 CPU, 1GB of RAM, and a 160GB hard drive, while the NBPC1022XPBLK is a 10.1-incher with identical specs.
