MSI X-Slim X600 now fully official, available to order
This may seem a bit like old news considering how long the thing has been floating around, but MSI has only just now officially launched its X-Slim X600 ultrathin laptop in the US, and made it available at a number of online retailers including Newegg and Amazon. As expected, the laptop runs a fairly reasonable $899, and includes some pretty decent specs for that price (and its size), including a 1.4GHz Core 2 Solo processor, a 15.6-inch WXGA display, ATI HD 4330 graphics, 4GB of RAM, a 320GB hard drive, a bundled external DVD drive, a standard six-cell battery and, of course, your choice of silver or black color options.Filed under:

PC and related peripherals maker ASUS recently introduced two uBoom series speakers that connect to notebooks through USB 2.0. Swedish authorities order The Pirate Bay offline
The Pirate Bay torrent site, following its loss in a Swedish court, has now gone offline, after the site's Internet Service Provider was ordered by the court to take it offline. The ISP, Black Internet, faced a fine equivalent to $70,600 for not complying with the law. The Pirate Bay operators have found another ISP, however, with the service expected to come back online on Tuesday.

Nokia N97 Mini previewed: not so mini, not so great

Editorial: Apple, the FCC, and the sideloading solution
As Engadget's resident former attorney, my first instinct when I sat down to re-read Apple, AT&T's and Google's FCC filings regarding Google Voice was to put on my lawyer hat and try to find inconsistencies that might shed some additional light on what had actually happened -- if Apple's account differed from AT&T's, for example, perhaps those subtle differences would reveal the actual truth. Simon the robot wins award, is super cute, seems pretty boring to hang out with
Simon -- the creation of Georgia Tech labs and Dr. Andrea Thomaz -- is a robot with an articulated torso and anthropomorphic hands -- and a head that will stop you in your tracks. PC-Wares Umsatz geht um 6,3 Prozent zurück

Das iPhone ist ein E-Book-Reader - mit kleinen Hindernissen. Die Gerüchte um ein Mac tablet mit 10 Zoll befördert auch Apple in die mögliche Riege der Anbieter elektronischer Lesehilfen, auch wenn Apple eher einen multimedialen Ansatz verfolgen dürfte. Denn Lesen gehört laut Steve Jobs zu einer aussterbenden Beschäftigung. Ganz so kulturpessimistisch sehen das andere Anbieter nicht, auch Zeitungen und Verlage beschäftigen sich eingehender mit dem Thema. Die Zahlen aus Amerika belegen: Der Umbruch hat längst begonnen.

RIM buys Torch Mobile, BlackBerrys might finally get a decent browser
The default BlackBerry browser has long been laughably sad, but it looks like things are about to get better: RIM's just acquired Torch Mobile, the developers behind the Iris mobile browser. If you'll recall, Iris is a well-received WebKit-based browser for Windows Mobile that offers tabbed browsing, touch, and a skinnable UI -- and we hear it does a pretty good job rendering pages as well. Trojaner führen Malware-Halbjahresreport von Bitdefender an
Während des ersten Halbjahres 2009 haben die Programmierer von Schadsoftware weiterhin alles darangesetzt, Computer zu infizieren und daraus direkten finanziellen Nutzen zu ziehen oder die Kontrolle über die betroffenen Rechner zu erlangen. Zu diesem Fazit gelangt die Halbjahresbilanz des Bitdefender-E-Threat-Report. Wegen der immer stärkeren Ausrichtung auf Profit sind vor allem Trojaner weiter auf dem Vormarsch. Ihr Anteil an der weltweit erkannten, aktiven Malware betrug 83 Prozent. Der Report zeigt auch einen rasanten Anstieg im Bereich des HTML-Newsletter-Spams.

News: Apple releases iPod nano 4G Software 1.0.4
Apple has released Software Version 1.04 for the fourth-generation iPod nano. According to Apple’s release notes, the update fixes an issue which resulted in some incorrect daylight savings date settings, now correctly displays Thai song information tags when syncing in disk mode, and includes other minor bug fixes. Software Version 1.0.4 for the fourth-generation iPod nano is available now through the Update feature in iTunes.

HTC is best known for its handsets running Windows Mobile and increasingly, Android. But did you know that they've built a full-on car computer in Taiwan? THINK+, as it's known, embeds GPS navigation, 3.5G communications, and a big ol' integrated 10.2-inch display inside of Taiwan's new LUXGEN 7 MPV to give it a range of functions including voice-activated calling, SMS read-back, media playback from USB devices, car diagnostics, night vision, parking assist, and enough cameras to give a 360-degree and top-down view. Unfortunately, the UI looks to be entirely utilitarian lacking any of the TouchFlo gymnastics we're used to seeing. Offiziell: Snow Leopard ab 28. August verfügbar
Die Spatzen pfiffen es bereits von den Dächern: Snow Leopard hatte vor einigen Wochen den "Golden Master"-Status erreicht, die Produktion der entsprechenden Datenträger konnte somit beginnen. In den vergangenen Tagen mehrten sich deshalb die Gerüchte, dass Apple den Verkaufsstart vorziehen könnte: Anstatt die neue Mac-OS-X-Version "erst" im September vom Stapel laufen zu lassen, ging man davon aus, dass bereits am 28. August die ersten DVDs mit der "entrümpelten" OS-X-Ausgabe für Intel-Macs über die Ladentresen wandern könnten. Genau diese Spekulationen haben sich heute bestätigt, als der Online-Store nach dem üblichen "We'll be back soon"-Procedere mit "Snow Leopard" im Sortiment wieder online geschaltet wurde.

Salesforce steigert Umsatz im zweiten Quartal um 20 Prozent

Space is mighty cool and the Earth's atmosphere isn't particularly hot either (most of it, anyway), but when you transition from one to the other a lot of friction can be generated. NASA typically uses gas-generating ablative shields for smaller orbiters and of course everyone is familiar with the silica tiles on the bottom of the space shuttle, but now it's tested a rather more lightweight and compact option: an inflatable shield. Last week the director of the Apple Store of Sainte Catherine in Montreal had a farewell drink with his employees. He leaves his functions there for a new post, that of director of the future Apple Store in the Louvre in Paris.

Unless you're crazy enough to believe that Apple would announce its tablet computer or iPods with cameras without a press conference, you shouldn't expect anything too big when Apple's online store (down globally) comes back up later today. Odds-on favorite would be a page for Snow Leopard orders when Apple comes back up at the usual 830 time slot ET. That would give the elves in Cupertino plenty of time to ship discs by August 28th. Don't expect this to show up on your iPhones anytime soon. Real has submitted their Rhapsody subscription service app to the iPhone according to a report by GDGT. Apple has been pretty strict on its "duplicates features of existing applications" with respect to music applications being copies of iTunes mobile. HIS HD 4770 iCooler III kommt bald

Gerade auf Dienstreisen vermutlich nicht gerade die Lieblingsfrage, im Falle eines Falles jedoch um so notwendiger: Wo ist die nächste (Notdienst-)Apotheke? Das jüngste Serviceangebot der deutschen Apotheken verbuchte jedenfalls nach dem Start Top-Platzierungen in den itunes-Charts (Genre Dienstprogramme). Die deutschen Apotheken haben damit erfolgreich ihr Serviceangebot ausgebaut.
Seit drei Wochen können auch iPhone- u. iTouch-Nutzer den einzigen offiziellen Dienst "Apotheken" verwenden. Der bereits 2008 entwickelte "22 8 33 Apotheken-Notdienstfinder" wird damit neben der Anruf-, Online- und SMS-Funktion nun auch mit einer speziellen iPhone-Anwendung ergänzt. Wishful thinking: Another subscription music store submitted to the App Store
Don't expect this to show up on your iPhones anytime soon. Real has submitted their Rhapsody subscription service app to the iPhone according to a report by GDGT. Apple has been pretty strict on its "duplicates features of existing applications features". Another all-you-can-eat streaming service, Spotify, is also currently in App Store Purgatory after submitting its streaming app last month. Spotify has the advantage of being backed by the Music industry titans and having an offline cached mode. The Real Rhapsody App will be free of charge but require a $15/ month subscription.

Admittedly, when we saw Game Informer's survey that pegged Xbox 360's failure rate at 54.2 percent, we were thinking that was a bit steep of a number, possibly bumped up a few digits from some possible sampling errors. So when we were gearing up to read Microsoft's statement responding to the data, we fully expected some harsh rebuttal of the number. Turns out we got disappointed. A spokesperson for Redmond pointed to its superior entertainment value, its "best warranty in the industry" and its "constantly improving design, manufacture, and performance." Apple ist größter Musikhändler in den USA
Laut einer letzte Woche veröffentlichten Studie des Marktforschungsunternehmens NPD werden in den USA 25 Prozent aller verkauften "Musikeinheiten" (hier werden Downloads und CDs zusammen gezählt) über iTunes verkauft. Damit liegt Apple deutlich vor der Großhandelskette Walmart, die - Downloads und CD-Vertrieb über die Filialen zusammen genommen - auf lediglich 14 Prozent Marktanteil kommt.
Noch deutlicher werden die Zahlen, wenn man die Musik-Downloads vergleicht. Apple liegt hier mit 69 Prozent um Längen vor der Konkurrenz. Amazon bringt mit gerade mal acht Prozent Anteil am Download-Markt auf Platz zwei.
Ein weiteres interessantes Ergebnis der Studie: Die CD dominiert den Musikmarkt derzeit immer noch, rund 65 Prozent aller Verkäufe erreichen den Kunden noch in Form einer Silberscheibe. Die Marktforscher sagen für Ende 2010 erstmals ein ausgeglichenes Verhältnis zwischen Downloads und CD-Käufen voraus.

Akihabara News' early review of the Fujifilm W1 3D Camera pretty much laid everything out from the get-go with its headline, "The worst camera ever made: the review." It assuredly caused more than a few raised eyebrows, not the least of which from Fujifilm itself. Can't say we're all that surprised given other sightings, but one anonymous tipster has sent us pics from a local Best Buy of the 120GB Xbox 360 Elite in a shiny white package with a back-of-box chart that neglects to mention the Pro models, essentially striking it from the records. It's still scanning at $399 for now, but having seen other retailers print flyers quoting $299, the computers very well may be updating just after some official Microsoft announcement, which wouldn't surprise us at all
