Twitter integration could come to OnStar
We know you've been losing sleep just wondering how on earth General Motors plans to get OnStar users to keep on using once their free year is up, but apparently someone up top has been doing a bit more than just mulling. Gearlive received quite the interesting survey from OnStar this week, with a paragraph clearly explaining how Twitter integration would work should it come to the in-car alert / communication system. Windows Mobile 7 screenshots (or mockups, or something) leaked?
The past few days have seen the alleged leaks of a couple batches of Windows Mobile 7 screenshots, suggesting Microsoft's already hard at work on the successor to 6.5 -- something we've heard in the past, and given the state of 6.x, a rumor that isn't difficult to believe. To say the leaks look sketchy, though, would be an understatement; most prominently, none of them match, with different styling elements applied to every capture. Best case, we figure these are mockups -- not functional shots from an actual device or an emulator, but early, off-the-cuff stabs at a design language from a usability expert's late-night Illustrator session somewhere deep within Redmond. We like some of what we're seeing -- there are definitely at least a few elements here that look thoroughly

Apple to Go Full Biometric?
When looking at patents filed by Apple, one can identify one dealing with recording, storing and checking biometric information. Planned to be integrated in any devices, from the iPod to the computer, patent claims are broad enough to cover all type of biometrics, from the digital prints to voice signature, including face recognition, hand palm identification, etc.
Even though it is not new, and other computer manufacturers such as HP have already integrated digital prints recognition to some of their notebooks, the patent describes also other technologies and parameters such as the way and the speed with which a password is typed on the keyboard, as a signature too. Schnellerer Safari-Browser durch iPhone OS 3.0
Unter dem Namen "Nitro" setzt Apple seine aktuelle WebKit-Engine im Safari 4 ein. Auch die bereits erhältliche Beta-Version verfügt über die Ende letzten Jahres noch unter dem Codenamen "SquirrelFish Extreme" gestartete schnelle JavaScript-Engine. Bis zum Sommer dürfte sich die Geschwindigkeit dieses Unterbaus noch verbessern, denn dann soll der neue Apple-Browser erscheinen.

MP3 moves on to Lossless
Thomson launched a new format, the mp3HD. Its this name hides a new format that is supposed to be lossless , i.e. does not lose any information compared to the original. Of course, the files explode in size, the encoding being done with data flows ranging between 500 and 900 Kbits/s. A 4 minute file of music will be 14 and 26 MB.
This format wants to be retro-compatible with the immense installed base of readers able to read MP3. They will be able to restore these files, but with a quality less than the really compatible apparatuses.
Remain to be seen if Apple will make an effort to include this format in its next iPods. Nothing is less sure. Even though MP3 were impossible to circumvent at the launch of the first iPod, Apple has since done everything to push AAC or the Apple Lossless.

TORC shows off WaySight and AutoNav-Mini for small, expensive robots
The last we heard from the gang at TORC their tech was being used to snag third place in the DARPA Urban Challenge, and now Engineering TV has a couple programs highlighting some of the company's more portable technology. Compared to other control units, WaySight is relatively small (under three pounds), and can be used to sight the robot either by selecting GPS waypoints via laser range finder in real time, or -- if the GPS is unavailable -- by sighting the robot and then the waypoint in relation to it. If the operator doesn't find any of that appealing, the unit can be used to steer the robot using the unit's built in accelerometer. The unit has a range of up to 400 meters. Neue Spiele für das iPhone

Jailbroken iPhone makes its way into iPhone patent application
We generally try to avoid Apple's patent applications. They have little to do with what end up as final products and they are about as exciting as people suing Apple for headphones being too loud.

Updates für SongGenie und CoverScout
Equinux hat Updates für die Mac-iTunes-Helferlein SongGenie und CoverScout veröffentlicht. SongGenie ergänzt fehlende Informationen in den ID-Tags der MP3-Dateien, CoverScout kümmert sich um fehlende Cover-Abbildungen. In den neuen Versionen 1.1 bzw. 3.1 arbeiten die Programme enger zusammen, SongGenie kann nun zum Beispiel CoverScout starten um fehlende Albencover zu suchen fragt sich nur, warum es die beiden Programme überhaupt einzeln gibt.

Intel: Notebook-CPU mit 5,5 Watt ab Montag?

Ausgetrickst: iMovie 8.0.1 mit einem PPC-Mac nutzen
Die Umstellung auf Intels CPU ist zwar schon etwas her, ältere Systeme aber immer noch in Verwendung. Die Unterstützung von in die Jahre gekommenen Rechnern bei neuen Updates ist deshalb nicht immer gewährleistet. Auch Apples aktuelles iLife-Paket läuft nur mit Intel-Rechnern. Bastler haben jedoch einen Weg gefunden die Software auf G4 oder G5 zum Laufen zu bringen. Mit dem kürzlich veröffentlichten Update iMovie 8.0.1 musste auch die Anleitung aktualisiert werden, die Kunden älterer Macs die Nutzung ermöglicht.

Samsung's sleek BD-P3600 Blu-ray player gets hands-on love
Oh sure, we've already seen this thing spotted at Best Buy, but there's just something especially titillating about photos with clarity. CNET's UK branch managed to get their camera all up in the BD-P3600's area, and they definitely enjoyed what they saw. For starters, the 7.1-channel analog outs are a real boon to those still using that circa-1999 AV receiver, and the bundled WiFi dongle means BD-Live is now entirely more accessible. Granted, we aren't similarly impressed by the 40 second BD load time, but maybe we're just spoiled by the hasty

Sure, we've seen all those purtied up renders, but what does the Ulysse Nardin Chairman look like in the flesh? Well, they're keeping it under wraps pretty tightly at BASELWORLD, not letting photographers near it, but our friendly tipster Greg's phone "accidentally" snapped a couple pictures. He says there was no way to touch it or see it in action, but he was struck by the sheer enormity of the device. Wind-powered vehicle hits 126MPH, nabs world record
Sorry Mr. Schumacher, but your ten year record just got obliterated (okay, "beat soundly") by a Briton. On the dry, dusty plains of Ivanpah Lake in Nevada, Sir Richard Jenkins managed to perfectly harness winds of 30MPH in his futuristic Ecotricity Greenbird in order to hit a ridiculously quick 126.1MPH. In all honestly, we can't even fathom how you hit that speed with just 30MPH of wind, but clearly we're not up to speed when it comes to physics and engineering. At any rate, the milestone is pretty important for Ecotricity, which is trying to make wind power the go-to alternative energy source within the next score. Recent Apple patent filing speaks of stealth biometric security on iPhone, other insane insanity
Recent patent fillings by Apple that AppleInsider has dug up point to the company adding several new methods of insuring the security of its devices for users. The new filings cite biometric authentication methods that would excite Ethan Hunt -- including installation of a hidden sensor behind the screen that would recognize the user's fingerprint when touched, and / or a front-facing camera for retinal recognition. Intel to officially refresh laptop chips next week?
We had a hunch this refresh was coming, and according to information gathered by CNET, it's all going down on Monday. The 2.53GHz SP9600, complete with its 6MB of cache memory and $316 sticker, will reportedly be revealed alongside the 1.6GHz SU9600, which will be pegged at $289. Furthermore, we should see a single-core 1.4GHz SU3500 ($262) with a thermal envelope of only 5.5 watts, which will obviously cater to those really, really low-power applications where horsepower isn't a concern. Orange to offer subsidized MacBooks on contract?
This one's not a done deal just yet, but reports are starting to surface out of the UK that Orange and Apple are in the "final stages" of discussions about offering subsidized MacBooks to folks willing to sign a two-year mobile broadband contract. Of course, unlike some netbooks offered by the carrier, the MacBooks wouldn't be free, but some are speculating that the MacBooks could go for as little as £369 (or about $560), which is backed up somewhat by the £350 price Orange is currently asking for a Toshiba laptop on a similar contract. Dell targets school crowd with Latitude 2100 Welch laptop?
Looks like Dell's going for the back-to-school crowd, if this leak is to be believed. According to Gizmodo, the Latitude 2100 "Welch" is a 10.1-inch laptop with a 1.6GHz Atom processor, up to 2GB RAM, and an optional SSD drive, all under three pounds.
