What is the 8A83E3 chip inside the iPod Shuffle headphones?
There seems to be a lot of brouhaha from iLounge and Boingboing over the revelation that the iPod Shuffle's new headphones contain a special new chip that may be some sort of hardware DRM. It also may be a way to communicate with Aliens no one is sure yet. We hope it isn't some sort of DRM that controls what headphones or charger the Shuffles can use but until someone with knowledge of the situation can sort it out, we're going to just sit by and watch..

iPhone 3.0 to have copy and paste, Pre-like features -- but no background apps
Digg's Kevin Rose has a solid (but far from perfect) track record when it comes to Apple rumors, and he just drove the nerds of SXSWi crazy with his latest gaze into the crystal ball: he says the iPhone 3.0 will have copy and paste. Kev says that the interface is much like the magnifying glass -- you use two fingers to select the text you want, and then you can cut or copy. Sure, that's great, but we think the bigger news is that Rose says 3.0 won't have support for background apps -- which makes his claim that that 3.0 will bring the iPhone "up to speed with the Palm Pre" a little suspect. Digg-Mitgründer plaudert über Copy & Paste im iPhone OS 3.0
Kevin Rose, der uneheliche Sohn von AppleInsider und MacRumors, spricht einmal mehr über zukünftige Apple-Produkte. Bei einer Live-Aufnahme des Diggnation-Videopodcasts hat er die "Copy & Paste"-Funktion im nächsten iPhone OS beschrieben. Nach seiner Aussage muss zunächst ein Wort doppelt angetippt und dann in der Vergrößerung die Selektion aufgezogen werden. Anschließend besteht die Wahl zwischen Kopieren, Ausschneiden oder Einfügen.

Gurus develop way to shrink atomic clock... with lasers
The world's most accurate clocks got even more accurate just a few years back, but now a team from the University of Nevada in Reno is looking to make the atomic clock way, way smaller. Housed at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in Boulder, Colorado, these so-called "fountain clocks" send out clouds of caesium atoms through a vacuum chamber in a magnetic field; from there, microwaves in the chamber excite the atoms and then emit light as they drop to a lower hyperfine state. Not that we can really blame the guy or anything, but don't think that the selling of this machine at this point in the history of mankind is any sort of coincidence. Literally two days after we took a glance at this very Macbook -- which had its Apple logo replaced with a bona fide, completely functional LCD -- it's up for auction at eBay. We know, the economy's a little rough right now, so we'll chalk this one up to a creature of the entrepreneurial spirit and move on. O2 plans to give away free iPhones (with plan) in anticipation of new device in June
The Telegraph is reporting that O2 will now be giving away free iPhones with their lower cost plans in order to clear out inventory for the new iPhones which will be released this summer:
O2, which has exclusive rights to sell the iPhone in the UK, is believed to planning to give the eight gigabyte (GB) 3G iPhone away for free on £34.26 pay monthly tariffs from May.
At present the 8GB device costs £96.89 on the cheapest tariffs and is only free on £73.41 and £44.05-a-month contracts. The operator is also said to be planning to give away the 16GB on £44.05 per month contracts.

Scientists shoot down malaria-carrying mosquitoes with frickin' lasers
Seriously, is there anything a laser can't do? A team of mad scientists in Washington have concocted a system that could essentially eliminate malaria-carrying mosquitoes with lasers, and the whole thing can be built from parts sourced on eBay. The so-called mosquito laser is credited to an idea from Lowell Wood, an astrophysicist who worked with Edward Teller, the "architect of the original plan to use lasers to shield America from the rain of Soviet nuclear arms." In theory, at least, the technology could one day be used to draw a laser barrier of sorts around a village. Of course, the trick is to make the lasers powerful enough to smoke the bugs without harming humans -- any of you Earthlings up for a clinical trial or two

Apple verlängert AppStore-Lizenzen
In letzter Sekunde und für viele Entwickler gerade noch rechtzeitig gibt Apple bekannt, dass die Lizenzen für das iPhone-Entwicklerprogramm pauschal bis zum 11. Juli 2009 verlängert werden. Vor allem für Teilnehmer, deren Verträge noch im März auslaufen, schafft dies Erleichterung. Denn ohne gültigen Vertrag würde die angebotenen Programme einfach aus dem AppStore verschwinden.

Bald alle iPhone-Apps mit Draht zu Facebook?
Wer die Präsenz sozialer Netzwerke schon in Deutschland als erdrückend empfindet, sollte sich vor dem Blick in die USA warm anziehen. Premium App Store en route for iPhone 3.0
The iPhone is likely to get a premium App Store if rumors from Wired are true (and previously from Pocketgamer). They say game developers, enterprise developers and other premium vendors will soon have a place to sell their wares free from all of the free and $.99 drivel that pollutes the regular app store.
They put the $20 price point as the barrier for entry into the new "velvet rope area" premium App Store. No game developer would, of course, corroborate their story.
