MacBook Pro 17-inch unibody review
There's not much that can be said about the 17-inch version of the MacBook Pro that hasn't already been said about the 15-incher (and to some extent, the MacBook). Still, the big, big brother of the family has a few key differences that make it stand out from the rest of the gang. The first being its non-removable battery, built out of tech which Apple claims will result in groundbreaking lengths between charges. The second difference, available only as an option, is a non-glossy display -- an addition which many have pined for since Apple's full throttle decision to move to extremely high-glare screens. Video: Rollin' Justin and DESIRE robots take out trash, follow commands
Future Parc Hall, an out-of-the-way palace where we spotted Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft's iPoint 3D yesterday, was also home to two of the baddest, most sophisticated robots we've ever had the pleasure of watching. Tattooed DESIRE (the orange guy) and Rollin' Justin (the blue fellow), these two humanoids were built with the hope of one day being available for sale to elderly and single individuals who need another being around the house to take care of things. DESIRE seemed mighty great at picking up random cans and tossing 'em in the garbage, while Rollin' Justin listened intently to commands from his master, spoke aloud to confirm them, and then obeyed. Bird Electron's Takotsubo "octopus trap" speakers are all kinds of odd
Bird Electron loves rolling out the crazy little speakers and such for your listening pleasure. The company's newest pair, the Takotsubo speakers, are modeled on Japanese fisherman traps. In this form factor, however, we doubt they'll do much beyond catch some wild stares from your friends, but they sure are cute! MacPractice MD 3.6, DC 3.6 updates due soon
Parallel updates for two editions of MacPractice should become available in the near future, according to the software's namesake developer. MacPractice MD, aimed at general practice doctors, and MacPractice DC, aimed at chiropractors, are both being updated to v3.6 within the next few months, joining the MacPractice DDS dentistry edition of the software.

MSI showcases new Blu-ray-equipped Wind Box DE200, we go hands-on
MSI hasn't made a big fuss about it, but the Wind Box DE200 is new for CeBIT 2009. The unit seems to be the bigger brother of its Wind Box DC100, and while we're stoked about the optional Blu-ray player, we're seriously doubting that the listed Celeron M 550 (2GHz) is the only CPU available. The unit also comes loaded with NVIDIA's GeForce 9400M GPU, 2GB of DDR2 RAM, a 160GB hard drive, 802.11n WiFi, HDMI and DVI outputs, Windows Vista Home edition, a multicard reader, audio in / out, Ethernet, a few USB 2.0 ports and an overly glossy enclosure. Firefox eclipses IE6 in web share, threatens IE7
Firefox 3 has become the first non-Microsoft web browser to overtake Internet Explorer 6 in market share, according to new data from StatCounter. Apple setzt mit dem am letzten Dienstag vorgestellten Mac Pro auf die schnellen DDR3-Speichermodule, deren hohe Taktrate durch den gleichzeitigen Zugriff auf mehrere Speichermodule parallel voll ausgenutzt wird. As with Navigon's booth yesterday, Garmin's CeBIT showcase was overflowing with Earthlings. Many of which, as you could likely guess, were swooning over the recently announced nüvi 1200 and 1300 series navigators. Acer K10 pocket projector hands-on
Acer's K10 pocket projector was propped up aimlessly amongst a flurry of Aspire netbooks, and being that we're the caring individuals that we are, we had to stop over and show it some love. The 800 x 600 resolution actually looked great, though the image was decidedly faint in the well-lit hall. Size wise, it's a real winner, but we still don't see this being all that useful in areas that are even mildly splashed with daylight. Clevo's 18.4-inch M980NU desktop replacement gets put through its paces
The gang over at Notebook Check just got their hands on that Clevo M980NU we've had our eyes on for a couple months now. A desktop replacement clearly aimed at the gaming set (what else could all those blue LEDs possibly mean?), this guy rocks the new nVidia Geforce GTX 280M GPU which, combined with its 3.06GHz Intel Core 2 Extreme processor, gets called out for its "first-class performance in virtually all fields of application." MSI Winki hands-on: it's an instant-on OS, but for desktops
MSI did a laudatory job this morning baffling us with its Winki release, but we managed to find an exceptionally kind, English-speaking representative at its CeBIT booth today who broke it down for us. SecretBox 1.0 safeguards private info
app4mac's second release for Wednesday is SecretBox, a data protection program. Based on BookShelfApps' SecretBook, the app creates a database in which users can store a sensitive information such as credit card numbers, e-mail logins and software registrations. Obama taps Julius Genachowski to head the FCC
As widely expected by most folks who speculate on such things, President Obama has now formally nominated lawyer and former venture capitalist Julius Genachowski to head up the Federal Communications Commission and fill the slot vacated by Bush appointee Kevin Martin. We're not sure how many are affected or across how many parts of the business this goes, but Apple is doing layoffs, at least in Apple Enterprise Sales. We've got two seperate reports that a few heads (50?) are rolling.
It doesn't look like Apple is entirely immune to the economic downturn.

ASUS rolls out HD-minded Eee Box 206
ASUS first got official with its upgraded Eee Box 206 way back in December, but the nettop is just now finally rolling out into availability (in the UK, at least), and bringing with it a number of more HD-friendly features. Google Calendar: Offline-Nutzung für alle

LG Xnote P510 laptop hands-on
We felt a bit out of place when waltzing into LG's very business like booth, and while we were absolutely devoid of suit and tie, we weren't unappreciative of all the beauty seen here on the Xnote P510. First spotted just under a month ago, this here lappie is an immediate eye-catcher in person. The entire palm rest of made of a rubberized material (trackpad included), and there's even a vibration function to provide noticeable feedback in the pad if you're into that sort of thing. CeBIT: Umfrage ergibt breite Zustimmung zur Gesundheitskarte
Eine große Mehrheit der Deutschen wünscht sich eine Gesundheitskarte mit Notfalldatensatz und Zugang zur elektronischen Patientenakte. Among the goodies making their debut at CeBIT this week, ZTIC (Zone Trusted Information Channel) is a USB stick designed for secure online banking, even on your horribly malware-infected machine. China Unicom chairman acknowledges iPhone talks
The chairman of China Unicom, Chang Xiaobing, has admitted to talks with Apple in regards to selling the iPhone in China, Reuters reports. Although a manager is said to have confirmed the information early last month, Xiaobing himself has not spoken about negotiations until today. AMD announces GLOBALFOUNDRIES spin-off, forgets to name it something awesome
AMD's finally dumped its fabrication facilities and technology onto a new spin-off brand, as expected. ATIC (Advanced Technology Investment Company) is on board as well, and the newly-formed GLOBALFOUNDRIES has $6 billion in investments to start out with, along with 2,800 employees. GLOBALFOUNDRIES will be primarily be building chips for AMD, just like usual, but will also be open to other gigs as a 3rd party chip builder -- its main rival TSMC just scored a deal with Intel to produce Atom chips on the cheap, a first for Intel who usually keeps production and processes in-house.

Is the iPhone hotter than we think?
It's hard to call two incidents of some occurrence around the world a trend, but, when those incidents both involve an electrical device catching fire spontaneously, it creates a situation that's hard to ignore -- especially when that device is the iPhone. On Saturday, Italian blogger Tim Colbourne was charging his 3G handset and, after three hours, it sparked and caught fire at the base. Xandros announces Presto! instant-on Linux distro
We've always had a thing for instant-on OS environments like SplashTop, and now Xandros is looking to bring that concept to every laptop with Presto!, a new Linux distro that's said to boot in "seconds." The idea isn't so much to replace Windows as it is to supplement it -- you select between Windows and Presto at boot, you'll still have access to all your files, and you can even uninstall Presto from Add / Remove programs. Not a bad way to get your Linux feet wet, and Presto seems like it's pretty functional as well: Xandros already powers the Linux Eee PCs, and it sounds like Presto will run decently on similarly low-powered / older hardware. The recently launched K Series is aimed at those looking for a portable PC that can handle the basics, particularly ones who won't much mind how the thing looks. ASUS U / UX Series laptops hands-on
Maybe it's just because we visited that heart-stealing Eee PC 1008HA right before these buggers, but for whatever reason, ASUS' new U / UX lineup just didn't seem as sexy in person as they did in the press shots. We will say, however, that the light-up trackpad was one of the more whiz-bang things we've seen in awhile, though we're still skeptical of its actual utility. Curiously enough, one of the models on display even lacked letters on the chiclet style keyboard, and while we know good and well it won't ship like that, we were kind of fond of it in a weird, nerd-type way. We heard that the cable industry (or at least TWC and Comcast) could begin offering up a lot of pay-TV content to subscribers via the web by this summer, but frankly, we didn't believe it. Palm meldet Umsatzeinbruch im dritten Geschäftsquartal
Palm hat im dritten Geschäftsquartal 2009 (bis 27. Februar) einen vorläufigen Umsatz zwischen 85 und 90 Millionen Dollar gemeldet. Panorama-Freihandaufnahmen mit der Sony Cyber-shot HX1
Sony hat mit der HX1 eine Bridgekamera vorgestellt, die Panoramaaufnahmen ohne Stativ ermöglicht. Der Fotograf drückt den Auslöser dazu einmal durch und bewegt die Kamera in einer Bewegung von oben nach unten oder von links nach rechts. Ben Heck fashions breath-controlled kick pedal for Guitar Hero
Ben Heck's at it again, and this time, he's cobbled together a breath-controlled kick pedal for use with Guitar Hero (or Rock Band, if that's your flavor) meant for people in wheelchairs, or who don't have use of their legs, but still want to get in on the rocking action. After tearing apart the kick pedal to expose its piezoelectric sensor, he mods it so that, rather than reacting to physical pressure, it'll react to air pressure. Keine CPU-Upgrades mehr für Mac mini
Schluss mit dem Sockel: Laut Hardmac ist bei den neuen Mac minis der Prozessor direkt auf die Platine aufgelötet. Damit ist es nicht mehr möglich, die CPU gegen ein leicht schnelleres Modell auszutauschen. Kostenoptimierung könnte der Grund für das Wegfallen des Sockels sein und wieviele Mac-mini-Besitzer wirklich in der Vergangenheit ein CPU-Upgrade gemacht haben ist unbekannt.
