Apple verkauft 1,7 Million iPhones in drei Monaten

Apple verkündet bestes zweites Quartal aller Zeiten
Das zweite Geschäftsquartal endete für Apple am 29. März 2008 und konnte, wie soeben bekannt wurde, wieder einmal alle Analystenerwartungen übertreffen. Stolz verkündete man dabei mit einen erwirtschafteten Gewinn von 1,05 Milliarden US-Dollar und einem Umsatz von 7,51 Milliarden US-Dollar das beste zweite Quartal der Firmengeschichte. Auch die Mac- und iPod-Verkäufe stiegen im Vergleich zum Vorjahresquartal weiter an und erreichten beinahe das Niveau des Weihnachtsquartals. Steve Jobs zeigte sich darüber ebenso erfreut, wie über ein Gewinnwachstum von 43 Prozent und kündigte für die kommenden Quartale "einige fantastische neue Produkte" an.

Xbox 360 wireless Rock Band guitar starting to show up in stores

We've been waiting for Harmonix to deliver the promised Xbox 360 wireless Rock Band guitar controller for a while now, and it looks the company is stealthily getting them out there. Pre-orders have been trickling out for about a week, and alert reader Greg just sent us these shots of the controller in the wild at his local Best Buy. Oddly, he says the in-store price is $79.99 while the BestBuy.com price is $59.99, so if you're looking to cut the cord, you might want to save some cash and order online. Apple released some hard figures today ahead of the webcast:
2,289,000 Macs shipped (51% unit growth, 54% revenue growth)
10,644,000 iPods shipped (1% unit growth, 8% revenue growth)
1,703,000 iPhones sold (not going to hit 10 million at this rate)
Revenue of $7.51 billion and net quarterly profit of $1.05 billion, or $1.16 per diluted share
Q2 2007 was $5.26 billion revenue and $770 million profit, or $.87 per diluted share
International sales accounted for 44 percent of the quarter’s revenue.

5G iPods versagen Dienst bei iTunes-Store-Videos
Mehrere Nutzer eines 5G-iPod beklagen sich im Apple-eigenen Support-Forum über Probleme beim Abspielen von im US-amerikanischen iTunes Store erworbenen Videos und Fernsehsendungen. Apple buying P.A. Semi for engineering talent, not products or roadmap. U.S. Military could block.
According to EETimes,
On Monday (April 21), P.A. Semi informed its customers it was being acquired and it could no longer guarantee supplies of its chips. The startup did not identify the acquiring company but said that company may be willing to supply the chip on an end-of-life basis, if it could successfully transfer a third-party license to the technology.
That license in question is probably a PowerPC architectural license that P.A. Semi has with IBM Corp. that allowed the startup to design its own PowerPC chip from scratch. Samsung delays fourth gen BD-P1500 Blu-ray player, adds BD-Live

We can't really see the logic in releasing a Blu-ray player without BD-Live in 2008 -- and neither can Samsung, which just announced its fourth generation BD-P1500 will be BD-Live Ready. Formula One to introduce hybrid Kinetic Energy Recovery System in 2009

Unlike hybrid systems found in regular cars, however, the so-called Kinetic Energy Recovery System (or KERS) doesn't store up energy in a battery, but instead captures kinetic energy during vehicle deceleration using a flywheel mechanism. We just got to spend a smidgen of quality time with Samsung's new boringdaps: the S2 and S3. Gone are the pretensions of Bluetooth grandeur of the P2, these two players are about as straightforward as it gets. Samsung's targeting the fashionistas in the crowd, and while the S3 might be a bit larger than they were hoping for in a 4GB player, the S2 "pebble" has kind of a fun feel to it -- though some sort of clip-on apparatus would be appreciated.Gallery:

Xbox Live up and running, but still having "difficulties"

As you may have noticed, Xbox Live has been a little wonky as of late and, according to Microsoft's latest status update, it looks like it could stay that way for at least a little while longer. While the service itself is apparently "up and running," it seems that anyone matchmaking or using client voice communication may "experience difficulties," which is just a little bit more than a minor issue. Bestätigt: RIM kommt nach Bochum

Sony Ericsson meldet Umsatz- und Gewinnrückgang
Im ersten Geschäftsquartal 2008 (bis 31. März) hat Sony Ericsson gegenüber dem Vorjahr einen Umsatzrückgang um acht Prozent auf 2,702 Milliarden Euro hinnehmen müssen. Der Gewinn vor Steuern, Zinsen und Abschreibungen (EBIT) sank im Jahresvergleich um 47 Prozent auf 193 Millionen Euro, der Nettogewinn um 48 Prozent auf 133 Millionen Euro. The company has 150 employees but no production plant, PA Semi has recently announced a dual-core processor at 2 GHz consuming less than 15W.

Apples Web-Datenaufkommen um 13 Prozent gestiegen
Pünktlich zur Verkündung der Apple-Quartalsergebnisse steuert auch das Marktforschungsunternehmen Nielsen Online seine jüngsten Ergebnisse bei: In den vergangenen 3 Monaten ist das Datenaufkommen auf den Apple-Seiten um satte 13 Prozent gestiegen. Darunter fallen vor allem die Zugriffszahlen der Apple Stores ins Auge, die eine Steigerung von 32 Prozent verzeichnen können.

Studie: 15 Prozent der User surfen trotz Verbots am Arbeitsplatz
70 Prozent der deutschen Arbeitnehmer nutzen das Internet im Büro für private Zwecke. 15 Prozent widersetzen sich damit einem ausdrücklichen Verbot des Arbeitgebers. 36 Prozent gehen davon aus, das das Surfen am Arbeitsplatz erlaubt ist. Bestätigt: RIM forscht in Bochum

Unlocked iPhones for Belgium
Apple's planning an international campaign to boost iPhone sales and propel it towards its ten million unit sales target for 2008.
Emerging reports claim Apple will introduce the 3G iPhone to the Belgian market by June, making available through all local mobile network operators.
Earlier this week La Repubblica reported that the iPhone will debut in Italy with Telecom Italia but will be sold unlocked.
These reports confirm Apple is abandoning its previous bring to market iPhone strategy, in which it reached exclusive distribution deals with a key partner in each territory.

What is the PWRficient processor from P.A. Semi?
The announcement that Apple bought P.A. Semi today for $278 million brings up a lot of questions. What is this company about and why would Apple buy them? It seems very strange.
P.A. has one major product and about 150 really smart engineers. They have lots of venture capital including money from Texas Instruments. They also have a genius of a CEO in Dan Dobberpuhl, who has a long history in designing revolutionary chips - including DEC Alpha and the ARM architecture while he was at DEC in the 1980s and 90s.
The most interesting thing about this purchase is that P.A. has one major product. A PowerPC chip called PWRFicient. Yes, the same architecture that Apple dumped in 2005 in favor of Intel's x86 architecture.
As the name implies, the chips are extremely efficient low power versions of the PowerPCnothing that would find its way

Apple Intel decision revisited. Apple almost went with P.A. Semi in 2005
In April 2005, Apple was at a crossroads. IBM wasn't delivering on its 3GHz chip promises and wasn't making efficient, low power, high speed versions of its processors. It just wasn't a priority. Apple had to do something. At the time, that something turned out to be moving to Intel x86 processor lineup which blew anything IBM had away (Apple was still using Motorola/Freescale G4s in its laptops) in terms of power/watt.
The Register broke the story a year later that there was a third player involved in that switchover.

Sony kauft CDDB-Betreiber für 260 Millionen US-Dollar
Sony kauft das amerikanische Unternehmen Gracenote für 260 Millionen US-Dollar (umgerechnet knapp 163 Millionen Euro). Websense hat vor einer neuen Angriffswelle gewarnt, bei der eingefügter Javascript-Code seriöse Websites kompromittieren soll. Mehrere hunderttausend Webseiten sind angeblich bereits verseucht. HSDPA-Handy von Sony Ericsson mit aktuellem Google Maps
Sony Ericsson hat mit dem G502 ein neues HSDPA-Handy vorgestellt. Mit den G-Modellen hat der Handyhersteller auf dem Mobile World Congress 2008 in Barcelona eine Handyreihe eingeführt, die speziell auf die Nutzung des Internets ausgerichtet ist. RSS-Feeds, der Abruf von E-Mails und das Surfen im Web mit Access' NetFront-Browser sollen damit besonders einfach möglich sein. Apple to start selling the iPhone?
The disappointing iPhone sales in Europe appear to have undermined the economic model that Apple has sought to impose. It was based on two points, 1) no subsidy from the operator on the purchase of phone, Apple has always refused to sell its products, and 2) Apple gets a percentage of subscriptions, the operators have found it difficult to digest.
Since then, this model was undermined, first by T-Mobile in Germany, which has subsidized the phone, then by O2 which did the same thing.
If Orange denies wanting to do the same thing, it seems they are preparing something and renegotiating the percentage of the subscription returned to Apple in order to decrease the price.
There is a rumour in Italy where that the phone will be sold much the same as other phones: with a subsidy and much less strict rules about sim unlocking.
Is this the end of the iPhone as we know it? Certainly not, it is most likely a second wind to take its place in the wider mobile market and escape its current niche m

VMwares Umsatz wächst weiter
Virtualisierungsanbieter VMware konnte im ersten Quartal 2008 seinen Umsatz um 69 Prozent steigern. Der Gewinnzuwachs fiel gegenüber dem gleichen Quartal im Vorjahr jedoch nicht so hoch aus. Wie Forbes heute meldet, hat Apple gestern den low-power-Prozessor-Hersteller P.A. Semi aufgekauft. Dies soll ein Apple-Sprecher gegen Anfrage bestätigt haben. iPod-Spiel Mahjong wieder zu haben
Vor rund zwei Wochen räumte Apple das Spieleregal im iTunes Store auf. Diejenigen Titel, die noch nicht zu den aktuellen iPod-Geräten der classic- und nano-Produktlinien kompatibel waren, sind hierbei aus der Auflistung radiert worden. Quasi über Nacht sind so Mahjong, Royal Solitaire, Bejeweled, Musika und Lost verschwunden und konnten nur noch über die Suchfunktion des iTunes Store aufgefunden und gekauft werden. Während letzte Woche eine im Hinblick auf die Kompatibilität zu den vorgenannten aktuellen iPod-Modellen überarbeitete Version von Bejeweled veröffentlicht wurde, fand in dieser Woche Mahjong den Weg zurück in den iTunes Store.

New video cards from AMD in a couple of weeks?
Source : TGdaily Though AMD marks time vis-a-vis with INTEL with its processors, it is behind with its video cards compared to NVidia.
They could however take the lead in this field as of May.
Their new card, the Radeon 4800 based on the RV770 chip would be already in production and sounds promising. Indeed, the frequency approaches the GHz for the first time in the series. The graphics processor itself will integrate more texture memory units. To go further, this card will be the first equipped with GDDR5, a new generation of memory that runs around 2 GHz and ensuring a flow of almost 140 GB/s on a 256 bits bus.

The mysterious problem of the fast clock on the Mac Pro rev2
According to readers in the Forums , some Mac Pro's are experiencing a strange problem. Their internal clock is too fast, time is shifting ahead about 5 minutes per hour.
This might not sound dramatic, but it is worrying since it disrupts the date-of-creation of files and certainly the storage backups of Time Machine.
Currently Apple has not commented on this issue. But knowing that the Mac Pro clock is on the motherboard, it will take at best an updated EFI and at worst a change of the latter to overcome the problem.
