Honda to show off experimental "walking assist device"

It's far from the only strength-boosting exoskeleton out there, but Honda's so-called "walking assist device" is one of the few that you can actually take for a test spin -- if you happen to be attending the Barrier Free 2008 trade show in Osaka, Japan next week, that is. DoD establishes institute tasked with regrowing body parts

Apple slumps on AT&T financial call
Apple's US network partner AT&T this morning revealed positive financial results, boosted by its wireless unit profits climbed 22 per cent. However, investors were disappointed at the lack of any immediate breakdown in iPhone sales, sending Apple's stock on a downward trajectory, currently trading at $160.26 (down $7.90).
Investor anxiety is high at present, with deepening gloom in the US economy and depressing forward analyses of consumer electronic spending. A new study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences shows that researchers can track grey matter for the patterns that precede careless errors. Apparently there's a a detectable activity shift when your brain switches to auto pilot -- which can happen as much as half a minute before you screw up. Killing the iClones - Apple acts
Apple's legal teams are closing down unauthorised manufacturers of iPhone clones, applying the full extent of the company's legal protections to protect its market.
It appears firms are both supplying iClones to the Chinese market and distributing them into markets outside of China.
Under no choice but to protect its trademarks, Apple is forcing them to stop with heavy threats. Apple is hitting them with the abuse of patents, passing off and similarity between the iPhone and the products the cloners are putting out.
Apple's serious about closing iCloners down. The company is reportedly demanding they cease manufacturing and distribution of these non-Apple products, requiring they hand over any stock in hand, supply supplier details and is demanding contributions toward legal expenses, as well as damages.

Seit der Einführung des iTunes Store in Europa wird jedes Land einzeln mit digitaler Musik beliefert und das Repertoire der Stores unterscheidet sich zum Teil erheblich. Erzwungen wird das nicht nur durch unterschiedliche urheberrechtliche Regelungen, sondern auch durch die im jeweiligen Land agierenden Musikverwertungsgesellschaften, in Deutschland beispielsweise die GEMA. Recall of batteries for 15" MacBook Pros
Many of us have encountered problems with the batteries of the first MacBook Pro. Until now, Apple had agreed to exchange them one by one or more systematically according to their age. But the exchange only happened at the request of the customer.
Now, they have decided to exchange all the batteries of MacBook Pro sold between February and May 2006. These products are those of the A1175 model for MacBook Pro 15" having a part number ending in U7SA, U7SB or U7SC. To obtain a new battery and to return the preceding one, it is necessary to go to be registered on their site with the following address: https://support.apple.com/macbookpro15/battange/index.html
If you bought additional batteries for your MBP, think of checking that their part number is also included, whatever the date of purchase knowing that it could come from an old stock.

Eee PC 900 owners find weaker batteries than those used by reviewers
This isn't going to end well for Asus. Early adopters of the Eee PC 900 in Hong Kong are in a spat with Asus over batteries. Seems the Eee PC 900 ships with a standard 4-cell, 4400mAh battery whereas the battery shipped to the Hong Kong media (and presumably others) was a 4-cell, 5800mAh; the latter Asus is calling a mistake. That would certainly account for the wide ranging Eee PC 900's battery life reviews which have varied from a very disappointing 1.5 hours to a decent 2.5-hours. Of course testing methods will also contribute to lifespan. Regardless, ASUS is now considering giving 900 buyers a free upgrade. Our suggestion? Just do it Asus, and pronto. Balda rutscht tiefer in die Verlustzone

Apple continues climb up Fortune 500
Apple Finds itself at position 103 on the Fortune 500 for 2008. This represents the highest point it has reached since 1994 when it took number 67. After 1994, Apple began a slow slide that didn't turn around until Steve Jobs returned to the helm. Last year Apple was at 121 and in 2006 Apple was at 159. Obviously that is a pretty steep slope Apple is climbing and with the economic downturn effecting everyone a bit moreso than Apple, you should expect to see Apple in the top 100 next year. In fact, if Apple had not spread its AppleTV and iPhone revenues out over two years, it would have probably made the top 100 this year.

Infineon kündigt Verkauf von Qimonda an
Nachdem die Quartalszahlen von Qimonda noch schlechter ausgefallen sind als erwartet, hat Infineon den Verkauf und die Dekonsolidierung des Tochterunternehmens angekündigt. Man werde die Vermögensgegenstände und die Schulden von Qimonda in der Konzernbilanz von Infineon zum 31. März 2008 in die Position "Zum Verkauf stehende Vermögensgegenstände und Verbindlichkeiten" umgliedern. Infineon schreibt 1 Milliarde Euro auf Qimonda ab
Qimonda, die ehemalige Halbleitersparte von Infineon, musste im zweiten Quartal des Geschäftsjahres 2008 einen Umsatzrückgang hinnehmen. Der Umsatz des Unternehmens sank auf 412 Millionen Euro. iPhone-Handel in der Schweiz boomt
Erst kürzlich ging die Zahl von bisher mehr als 30.000 in der Schweiz verkauften iPhones durch die Medien - dabei lässt der offizielle Vetrieb durch die Swisscom noch auf sich warten.
Das Fernsehmagazin CASH-TV wollte wissen, wie die dort vertriebenen iPhones ins Land kommen und vor allem wie weit der Import und die Freischaltung legal sind. Klare Antworten bleiben allerdings aus. Der Züricher iPhone-Händler Digitec gibt zwar an, dass er ein oder zwei mal wöchentlich bis zu 400 iPhones importiert, will seine Quellen verständlicherweise aber nicht nennen. Auch der Sprecher des Eidgenössischen Instituts für Geistiges Eigentum drückt sich, ob der Legalität des iPhone-Hackens befragt, nur schwammig aus.
Den Fernsehbeitrag vom 20. April 2008 kann man auf der CASH-TV-Webseite online nachsehen. Neue Infos sind wie gesagt Fehlanzeige, dafür darf man aber frisch importierte iPhones in der Klinikpackung zu bestaunen.

Calibrating your protable's battery
If you want to able to use your laptop whenever, it is the bes to keep your battery as good a state as possible. This is especially true for Intel portable CPUs that can have fanciful specs for battery life and sometimes have problems.

1 - Connect the MagSafe power connector and recharge the MacBook or MacBook Pro battery until the light of the adapter turns green and the battery icon displayed in the menu bar indicates Loaded.

Intel lowers the price of its processors
As usual, with the introduction of new products, or just to spite AMD, Intel has dropped the price of its processors, or rather some of its processors.
It is indeed only models used on desktop computers, and not products for laptops, nor the Xeon that can be found in the Mac Pro.
Overall, the decline does not directly concern the processors used by Apple which makes updating of the CPU of a Mac Pro or iMac of little interest from a financial point of view.
Intel does not change the prices of the products Apple uses simply because they have no serious competition in these segments. We can only regret this.
This is especially the case this time when some of the reductions are significant. Thus, a Core 2 processor at 2.66 GHz Quad will cost no more than $266. But it does come with any Mac, but it does come with a hackintosh, which makes them economically very attractive.

A hard drive which uses AES 256 to protect its data
Fujitsu pre-for May the release of the first 2.5" disk drive able to encrypt data with a 256-bit AES key on the fly, reckoned to be unbreakable.
Everything is managed directly by the hard drive which encodes and decodes the data.
Another feature allows you to erase the encryption key in less than one second ("advanced secure erase feature"). Given the speed of this process, it would be all too easy to irreversibly remove its encryption key, rendering the data unrecoverable.
The performance should match other (non-encrypted) drives, with a capacity of 320 GB spinning at 7200 T / min and with 16 MB of cache.
As long as we can use it in a Mac, it would advantageous to replace Filevault which also secures its data with more ovedrheads, starting with the declining performance of the machine especially when copying.

A minuscule NAS
Buffalo offers a storage server a bit out of the ordinary.
Their NAS innovates by its size through the use of 2.5" disks . Capacity is nonetheless sufficient, the product containing two 500 GB disks that can be configured in RAID 0 or 1.

Velociraptor incompatible with Mac Pro
While Western Digital has "innovated" with its new Velociraptor, it will cease to provide it for the Mac Pro.

EFI update for MacBook Pro
A small EFI update for the MacBook Pro is available from last night (firmware update 1.5.1, 4.9 MB).
The narrative is exactly the same as the previous 1.5 update dated 15 days ago, with fixes of various problems and offering greater stability, as well as the same ROM versions (the support page of the 1.5 version has been deleted) .
This update fixes various problems and improves the stability of MacBook Pro computers.
Once the program is applied to your Mac, your BootROM version will be as follows:
MBP21.00A5.B08 or MBP31.0070.B07
You can confirm the BootROM version installed on your computer using System Information.
The CD restoration program to reinstall the original firmware moves to version 1.7 (22.5 MB).

The nine-foot-tall machine has nearly 8,000 parts, many of which were hand-filed, and suffered months of delays while under construction due to the tight tolerances required to make it work -- but it's here now, and it's ready to start cranking out polynomials at the rate of one per six seconds. DISH Network says some models of DVR can no longer be sold

Windows XP SP3 goes to manufacturing, will be released April 29th
