Apple to offer largest ever education deals Monday?
Apple is expected to unveil its 2008 back-to-school promotion, a move that senior vice president Ron Johnson calls Apple's biggest educational special "ever". Dell annouces a mini pc at a mini price.
Source : GizmodoWith its EEE PC, Asus succeeded in creating a new computer markett, which has not happened for a long time. Since then, other manufacturers have tried to take the same step. Thus Dell, in its turn, present its " Inspirion" mini;.
This computer will have a screen of 10" and should have a price below the new psychological bar of $500.
If Apple were to manufacturer a similar PC. there would not be the slightest doubt that they also announce a machine that would look the same.

ASUS positively, definitely launching 10-inch Eee PC 1000 at Computex

There hasn't exactly been much mystery surrounding this one, but Crave's UK arm has now gotten word straight from ASUS that the company will indeed be launching its new Eee PC 1000 series laptop at Computex in Taiwan next Tuesday and that, yes, it will a 10-inch model. ASUS said to be holding off on Eee PC 900 orders in anticipation of Atom

Toyota rolls out Night View-equipped, pedestrian-finding Crown Hybrid

First signs that investors are beginning to chase the potential gravy train that is iPhone application development emerges in force today with news that New York’s Pinch Media has attracted initial funding from Union Square Ventures, First Round Capital and a few other investors.

A last-minute competitor to Blu-ray?
Source : CDR InfoWe thought that the war was over; however it could be starting again with China pushing its own format called Red-ray. This format will now have to show enough progress in term of capacity for it to be considered as a credible competitor, at least for the Chinese market.
It should be said that they see Blu-ray with a very evil eye. They manufacture 94% of DVD readers, however these new Blu-ray products are still manufactured elsewhere, and they will have to pay substantial royalties to be able to produce them.
The cost of course plays an important role. Blu-ray is very expensive whereas Red-ray is based on components close to DVD readers, which are cheap.
For their format to succeed the Chinese will have to convince the content producers to believe in their format, however even for a market of more than a billion consumers they will be wary due to the lax laws on the hacking.

Infineon warning hints iPhone delay, analysts say
Apple’s 3G iPhone launch plans may have seen a slight delay, at least, reading between the lines of today’s profit warning from mooted chip supplier, Infineon.
What has occurred? Infineon today warned its profits and sales would be impacted by a delay in a project to supply components to Nokia. The company also said Infineon had also received lower orders than expected for a project to supply HSDPA chips for high-speed internet phones. This immediately generated analyst speculation Apple’s new iPhone would “launch at lower volumes”.

iPlayer hacked for Mac
Impatient Mac users in the UK have been complaining that while the BBC streams shows to their platform using iPlayer, it doesn’t yet allow them to download shows for offline viewing, a feature Windows users already enjoy.
Things have changed.
Developer wizard_drongo has released an application called iPlayer Downloader which enables Mac users to download shows from iPlayer in the QuickTime format. It’s not a legal tool, as the software also eradicates and DRM on iPlayer shows, meaning episodes can be transferred to other devices, encoded into different media, and watched beyond the BBC’s permitted window for using such content.

NY seeks angry Dell customers for compensation claims
The New York Attorney General’s office is urging customers who believe they have been victims of Dell’s deceptive and negligent business practices to get in touch in order to claim compensation.
The Attorney General has launched a website through which customers affected by Dell’s dubious dealings can register their complaints in an attempt to seek compensation.
The move follows this week’s judgment against the computer company in which New York State Supreme Court Judge Joseph Teresi declared Dell had engaged in fraud, false advertising, deceptive business and abusive debt collection practices. The company was also found guilty of a sustained pattern of depriving customers of tech support.

Hutchinson snags iPhone for Hong Kong, Macau
Apple has reached a deal to bring the iPhone to Hong Kong and Macau, the latest in a plethora of agreements to widen the addressable market for the next-generation of the product.
The company will offer the iPhone in Hong Kong and Macau through Hutchison Telecommunications International. In den USA sind neben vielen TV-Shows und -Serien bereits ganze Filme kauf- oder mietbar. Bei uns in Deutschland lassen sich hingehen immerhin Fernseh-Shows und bekannte TV-Serien kaufen. Darüber hinaus wird der Verleih mit ausgewählten Kinofilmen in Europa schon heiß erwartet, noch in diesem Jahr soll es soweit sein. Apple is preparing to announce film download and rental services through iTunes in the UK and Canada.
The company is understood to have reached deals with Disney, Paramount, Twentieth Century Fox, Warner Brothers, Lions Gate and MGM under which iTunes in both named countries will begin offering popular films for purchase and rental using Apple’s service. The move is likely to help boost Apple TV sales, and to improve the utility of iPod and iPhones.

Angefangen bei Mac OS X 10.5.3 gestern und dem Security Update 2008-003 heute, veröffentlichte Apple noch zwei weitere Aktualisierungen. Die erste widmet sich dabei der Software Logic Express und hebt diese auf die Version 8.0.2, die schon der große Bruder vor ein paar Tagen erreichte. Als eine weitere Aktualisierung erschien noch ein Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update.

Google zeigt Mobiltelefon-System Android
Dass neue Mobiltelefone nicht mehr über Tasten oder einen Stift bedient werden, scheint inzwischen der Normalfall zu sein. So zeigte Google bei der Präsentation des kommenden Mobiltelefon-Betriebssystems Android, welche Fähigkeiten das System bietet, wobei das Telefon selbst natürlich mit den Fingern auf einem berührungsempfindlichen Bildschirm gesteuert wird.

Security Update 2008-003 für Nicht-10.5.3-Nutzer
Security Updates gehören genauso zu Apple Aktualisierungs-Politik wie neue Versionen von Mac OS X. Neben dem gestrigen Build 10.5.3 erschien heute auch ein neues Sicherheits-Update, dass nur installiert werden sollte, wenn man Mac OS X 10.4 oder 10.5.2 einsetzt. Wer bereits 10.5.3 installiert hat, wird also von einer erneuten Aktualisierung befreit.

Apple iPhone auch bald in Hongkong und Macau
Wie Yahoo meldet, wird Hutchison Telecommunications das Apple iPhone noch in diesem Jahr in Hongkong und Macau anbieten. Hutchison Telecommunications zählt 2,5 Millionen Kunden, wobei fast die Hälfte bereits UMTS nutzt. Möglicherweise ist dies ein Anzeichen dafür, dass das Apple iPhone auch bald im Rest Chinas verfügbar sein wird.

iPhone SDK 6 arrives
Apple has introduced the sixth version of its iPhone SDK, saying it includes support for the ‘latest iPhone software’.
The new release also requires that Mac OS X 10.5.3 be installed, the company said, revealing the SDK won’t work with previous operating systems.
The 1.19GB download is available from the iPhone Dev Center and includes a complete set of tools, compilers, frameworks, and documentation, including an iPhone Simulator for testing.

Adobe gibt Entwarnung für Zero-Day-Lücke in Flash
Adobe hat Entwarnung für den gestern von Symantec gemeldeten Exploit für den Flash-Player gegeben. Laut einem Blogeintrag des Product Security Incident Response Team (PSIRT) haben weitere Untersuchungen ergeben, dass der Exploit keine bisher unbekannte Sicherheitslücke ausnutzt, sondern nur einen bereits Anfang April behobenen Fehler anspricht.

Toshiba is expected to propose this sytem on its laptops soon, and it will only take seconds to identify a user.
One could also imagine that Apple will add this functionality in the next version of Mac OS X, thus linking a face to a user account.
This new method obviously introduces some new security issues which, according to certain experts, makes this system less reliable than other authentication methods.
But one thing is for sure: we are definitely going to need high-resolution cameras that will be able to take photos of an iris that will not be reproducable on a standard A4 printed photo.

MacOSX 10.5.3 update fixes Time Machine backup of Aperture's Library
YES!
The 10.5.3 update to OSX finally fixes the problem where the Aperture Library would get backed up from scratch multiple times.
In previous versions of OSX, if you had Aperture open while a backup started, Time Machine would skip the Aperture Library until you closed Aperture. Then, the next backup would do a complete copy of your Aperture Library. yes, the WHOLE Library, not just the changed files like I explained in this post on the HArdmac blog (and as Apple explained in a KBase post).

Sechste Beta des iPhone-SDK veröffentlicht
Die vielleicht letzte Beta-Version des iPhone-SDK vor der WWDC ist erschienen. Die Änderungen im Vergleich zur Beta 5 bestehen aus dem Entfernen sechs überflüssiger Beispielanwendungen und einigen Fehlern. Außerdem wurde wieder an der API gefeilt und Unterstützung für das neue iPhone OS hinzugefügt. Einige bekannte Fehler und Einschränkungen existieren aber noch - beispielsweise unterstützt der Interface Builder noch nicht alle Cocoa-Touch-Views und -Kontrollen.

2.6 Billions Euros: The EC Denies to Have Taken Decision on Intel Probe
Couple of days ago, some sources were indicating that the European commission was going to announce a fine of 2.6 billions Euro regarding Intel probe. The EC was recently raiding Intel European HQ as part of EC investigation for monopoly and unfair competition.

Schwimmender Lautsprecher mit iPod-Anschluss
Auch wenn bei uns nicht wie in manchen amerikanischen Vorstädten in jedem Vorgarten ein Pool steht, den bei Neiman Marcus erhältlichen schwimmenden Lautsprecher mit drahtloser iPod-Anbindung wollen wir nicht ignorieren. Wobei uns angesichts der derzeitigen Temperaturen auch ein Pool ohne dieses Gimmick voll und ganz ausreichen würde
Das Set aus Sendestation und Lautsprecher kostet 150 Dollar. Für 6 Stunden Betrieb benötigt man umweltUNfreundliche 10 AA-Batterien, dafür ist die Kugel dann aber auch noch beleuchtet. Zudem kann man mit dem Speaker auch bis zu einer halben Stunde lang knapp 3 Meter tief tauchen (warum auch immer). Fehlt eigentlich nur noch die Haifischflosse und eine Fernbedienung, mit der man das Teil über einen See schippern lassen kann.

TV Shows on the French iTunes Store
While over the last couple of days rumors were indicating such introduction for a very near near future, it is now a reality, and the French iTunes Store features a category entitled "Programmes de Télévision" ("TV Show"). One can find US TV series such as Lost, Desperate Housewives, South Park, but also French series as "Chez Maupassant" displayed on France 2 channel and "Les Maîtres du Zodiaque" belonging to the private TF1 channel.
However, the prices are rather high when considering it is "only" a TV show or a series: from1.99 to 2.49 . But the French iTS might not be as competitive as other local VOD services, and TF1 Vision service charges 1.99 for each Lost episode, while the same episode will cost you 2.49 on the iTS. In addition, the video quality is not really good, and we are far from having the HD quality available for some series (such as Lost) in USA.

Hitachi to Bring Low-power Consumption HDs to Consumer Electronic Market
Source : TGdailyHitachi decided to follow Western Digital and to offer low-power consumption HDs.
The Cinemastar 5K500 is a 500 GB 3.5" HD consuming only 2.7 to 3.2 W, representing a power saving of 50%. The notebook version, named Cinemastar 5K320 should allow 10 to 20% power saving while offering 320 GB of storage space.
Such low power consumption HDs, with also lower performance levels, will be dedicated to standalone recorder or other HD-based multimedia centers for which heat release might be an issue.

It could be the first signs of new product annoucements at teh WWDC, Apple has released numerous updates during the night. Beside the security update and the iPhone SDK, herefater are some additional ones:
Server Admin Tools 10.5.3
The Server Administration Software installer package contains tools for remote server administration. These applications require Mac OS X version 10.5 or later. If you received this administration tools disc with an Xserve, the Apple Xserve Diagnostics software is also available for diagnosing certain Xserve hardware issues.
Logic Express Update 8.0.2
Logic Pro 8.0.2 addresses specific customer and compatibility issues of Logic Express 8.0.

Wer einen Mac und ein iPhone (oder einen iPod touch) besitzt, kann mit der neuesten OS X-Version 10.5.3 nun auch seine "Google Contacts", also das Adressbuch eines Google Mail-Accounts, mit dem Adressbuch auf seinem Mac und damit auch den Kontakten auf iPhone und iPod touch synchronisieren. TSMC will increase the fabrication cost of certain products
Source : eweekTSMC, one of the larger made-to-order chipmaker announced its intention of soon increasing its tariffs on the production of the chips using its latest technologies.
In addition to the increase in the raw materials, this tariff increase is justified by the explosion of the costs of installing new production equipment.
If the base-line chips are not be impacted, the top-of-the-range products such as the graphics chips will see their price increasing.
No order of magnitude was communicated on this tariff rise but if' one adds it with those already announced by other computer components, our computers are likely to cost us more in the near future.
