iPhone sales low in France ? [Upd]2x
According to PC Inpact , sales of iPhone in France will just exceed 100000 units.
If this figure is confirmed, it would be a very bad news for Orange, and also for Apple. Indeed, it would have sold only that 5000 per month in this case from the beginning of this year, which is a ridiculously low figure, in light of the forecast of the operator.
It only remains to hope that the iPhone 2 will do a better job of convincing the french.

Orange France confirms 90,000 iPhone sales
Orange France has revealed its iPhone sales figures for the first time, confirming over ten per cent of iPhones sold were sold unlocked, loosely in line with estimates that one-in-ten of the devices sold are then unlocked for use on other networks.
Speaking to UK technology news website, Pocket-lint, Orange France confirmed that as of January 31 2008 the mobile network had sold 90,000 iPhones in total since late November last year.
The report reveals that 14 per cent of iPhones sold were sold unlocked (which is a legal requirement in France, where Apple and Orange have been forced to sell an unlocked model). The remaining smartphones were sold for use on the Orange network.

Lightroom 2 bèta
Adobe is offering a bèta download for Lightroom 2.0, Adobe's tool that competes with Aperture.
This new version brings many improvements, and even supports 64-bit architecture on OS X -it's the first time that Adobe uses OS X' 64-bit features.
You can test the bèta for free for 30 days, and existing Lightroom 1.x users can use it untill August 31, 2008. The beta can be used together with an exisiting Lightroom installation.
There's also still an 1.4 update in the pipeline, expected somewhere in April.

Adobe combats Aperture with Lightroom 2.0
Days since Apple's release of Aperture 2.1 with its new-found support for plug-ins from third-party developers, Adobe has hit back with the release of a free public beta of its in-development professional photography application, Photoshop Lightroom 2.0.
Photographers are being invited to download and use a 30-day limited time version of the software. Customers who already own a registered copy of Lightroom will be able to use the beta software until August 31.
Key features within the upgrade include dual-monitor support, localised dodge and burn tools and - and it's a big and - support for 64-bit computing on Mac OS X and Vista.
Additional improvements include a redesigned and easier to navigate layout in the Library module and a new Smart Collections feature which helps users find images matching criteria such as stat-rating, keyword or various other forms of metadata.

We keep telling ourselves we're going to play through Mario 64 some day on one of those ubiquitous N64s embedded into hotel entertainment systems, but we never get around to it -- primarily because of our unhealthy addiction to "next-gen" graphics and gameplay. Lucky for us, hotels are starting to get in on the action and hand-delivering consoles to guests, sticking a Wii in the fitness center, and offering Guitar Hero nights in the hotel bar. Best of all, Hotel Sax Chicago networked its Xboxen for Rock Band and Guitar Hero multiplayer with other hotel guests. Unfortunately, most of these hotels are charging an arm and a leg for the priveldge -- $50 an hour of Wii rental?

Von sprunghaftem Wachstum kann wohl kaum die Rede sein, aber auch wenn es in Cupertino insgesamt langsam vorwärts geht, die Richtung ist eindeutig. Net Applications veröffentlichte kürzlich die Statistik für Marktanteile für den Bereich Betriebssysteme. Reader John V. just reminded us that Samsung's 500GB SpinPoint M6 is now overdue. Sure, companies miss deadlines all the time -- but this time, it's different. For one thing, Samsung is notorious for issuing world's first, biggest, pinkest, (you name it) press releases. Beta-Version von Lightroom 2.0 online
Adobe hat heute die Beta-Version von Photoshop Lightroom 2.0 veröffentlicht. Damit geht die Fotobearbeitungs- und Verwaltungssoftware in die nächste Runde und versucht sich gegenüber der Konkurrenz von Apples Aperture abzusetzen. Bereits vor einigen Tagen konnte die Mac-Life-Redaktion einer Vorführung der neuen Funktionen beiwohnen und erhielt ein positives Bild der neuen Funktionen. Da die Betaversion bis zum 31. August zur Verfügung steht, ist das endgültige Lightroom 2.0 für den Spätsommer zu erwarten. Von einem produktiven Arbeiten mit der Beravariante wird, wie üblich, natürlich abgeraten.

Intel and STMicroelectronics Join Venture: Numonyx
Source : DigitimesIntel and STMicroelectronics officially announced their joint venture company, aka Numonyx, a new semiconductor company that will be developing and manufacturing NOR/NAND flash memory as well as phase change memory (PCM) devices. The phase change memory is a new non-volatile memory technology that could replace flash-based memory in a near future. The PCM uses physical characteristics of chalcogenide glass, and its ability to switch between crystalline and amorphous state in response to heat. The consequent change in electrical resistivity defines the basis for data storage with this technology.
Numonyx will manufacture immediately RAM, NOR and NAND memory modules thanks to two Intel manufacturing plants managing 65 nm, and later this year, 45 nm engraving process. We might see a new price-based battle between flash-based memory manufacturers, as well as new mergers in a near future.

Xbox 360 To Adopt Blu-ray?
Source : DigitimesMicrosoft was supporting the wrong horse in the race between HD-DVD and BD, and shipped its Xbox 360 game station with a HD-DVD drive. When the HD-DVD threw the towel, Redmond's giant immediately denied to be working on moving the Xbox from HD-DVD to BD. However, some rumors indicate that such new models is indeed behind developed.
Lite-On is reported to be working on a internal BD drive which could fit in a Xbox 360 model that will hit the shelves for H2 2008. Once more Microsoft has made the wrong choice, and is one more time working on a solution to adapt its strategy to the winning wave instead of being able to surf on the wave they created.

Dell to Lay Off 10% of its Employees
Source : DellDell announced a plan to lay-off additional employees in the future years. With already 3200 jobs cut, the company expect to reduce its head count by 5600 in coming years.
The company reacts as usual when facing a crisis due to a reduction of market share as well as losing the leadership position for PC manufacturer to HP. If Dell was very competitive in the past thanks to its outsourced production lines in China, today all PC companies have similar contractors, and cost production for all manufacturers are now almost the same.
One will remember that four years ago, Michael Dell was stating that Apple was dead, and his company the only PC manufacturer to be able to look positively at the future with study growing market share.

Adobe combats Aperture with Lightroom 2.0
Days since Apple's release of Aperture 2.1 with its new-found support for plug-ins from third-party developers, Adobe has hit back with the release of a free public beta of its in-development professional photography application, Photoshop Lightroom 2.0.
Photographers are being invited to download and use a 30-day limited time version of the software. Customers who already own a registered copy of Lightroom will be able to use the beta software until August 31.
Key features within the upgrade include dual-monitor support, localised dodge and burn tools and - and it's a big and - support for 64-bit computing on Mac OS X and Vista.
Additional improvements include a redesigned and easier to navigate layout in the Library module and a new Smart Collections feature which helps users find images matching criteria such as stat-rating, keyword or various other forms of metadata.

Along swaggers Pandigital touting touch sensitive displays as the prime selling point of its new PanTouch WiFi and Bluetooth frames. Why touch? Because pushing buttons has suddenly become too cumbersome. Smudging? No problem, Pandigital claims that its displays are resistant to prints. The concern they don't address is the fact that touch-sensitive displays at low price points are typically not as bright and crisp as standard LCDs of the same dimensions -- especially with a smudge-free coating. Mini-Notebook mit 8,9-Zoll-LCD und WiMAX
Anlässlich der US-Mobilfunkmesse CTIA Wireless 2008 haben Chiphersteller VIA und der PC-Hersteller Everex eine neue Version des Mini-Notebooks "CloudBook" vorgestellt. A new class action on dithering
Despite the class action suit on the dithered MacBook and MacBook Pro laptops, Apple is facing a new suit, about dithered iMac screens.
This time, there's little chance that the suit will be settled as easily as the other suit, since there's a whole lot of lawyers behind it.
The facts are simple: Apple announces that all of their displays are capable of showing millions of colors. But in fact, they show only 262000 colors, and simulate more colors via the dithering technique.
A human eye will see more colors this way, even though they're not really there. And that's exactly the point of dispute. Is simulating those colors that aren't really there sufficient, or not?
For some people it'll be only detail, others will say it's swindling.

Office Open XML offiziell als ISO-Standard anerkannt
Nach mehr als 14 Monaten erneuter Überarbeitung hat das technische Komitee der Internationalen Organisation für Normung (ISO) und der Internationalen Elektrotechnischen Kommission (IEC) das formale Verfahren zur Verabschiedung des Standardentwurfs für Office Open XML (Open XML) abgeschlossen. Try 60fps burst or up to 1,200fps video. We're not going to try and make sense of all the machine translated text. Instead, we'll wait for a full-on English review to make sure we capture all the nuance. Until then, check the trio of videos they shot after the break in 300fps (512 x 384), 600fps (432 x 192), and 1,200fps (336 x 96). Samsung and Sprint were keeping their cards close all day today but we finally had a chance to check out Samsung's Instinct up close and personal. The handset's look and feel is really top notch, materials, finish, and the oh-so-glossy -- but hard to shoot -- screen is sweet. Haptics for touch feedback are here as well, and aside from some strange behavior while scrolling, was a pretty useful feature for letting you know you'd actually done something -- it was most noticeable, and most useful when typing. 7,5% of market share for OS X in March
Net Application has published its March 2008 figures for the market share for different OS.
These confirm the good form of Apple and Mac OSX that continues at 7.5% but that progress is slow since the start of the year.
The iPhone has a 0,15% share in a slow but constant progression month after month.
Even if the growth of Apple has slowed, they have gained 1% of market share over one year and almost 3% in two years.
Other figures allow Apple to view the future with serenity. Recent studies concluded that the sales of Mac would represent a little more than 20% of the US data-processing market.

Intel hat am ersten Tag des Intel Developer Forum (IDF) in Shanghai den seit einiger Zeit angekündigten Atom-Chip samt zugehöriger Plattform offiziell eingeführt. Zur Familie gehören fünf CPUs mit Taktraten zwischen 800 MHz und 1,86 GHz. ChangeWave confirms iPhone battles BlackBerry
The smartphone sector is gripped by a struggle for dominance that's emerging as between Apple's iPhone and Research In Motion's BlackBerry, according to the latest consumer survey from ChangeWave.
The survey asked 3,597 consumers to share their views on smartphones, and while the research confirms RIM continues to dominate the existing consumer smartphone market, Apple's iPhone has "huge momentum" for future growth.
In terms of current market share, BlackBerry deployment has slipped one percentage point to 42 per cent. Apple has quickly shot to third place in the market occupying 9 per cent share, just a few percentage points behind second place manufacturer, Palm, with 16 per cent.
Palm's 16 per cent is significant because it reflects a continuous two-year decline in Palm's marketshare, ChangeWave claims.

Web surfers turn to Mac
Apple accounted for 7.58 per cent of all US internet users in March, the latest Net Applications data confirms.
The figures, which reflect the operating systems used by Web surfers through a series of tracked sites, confirm increasing Mac usage. Mac took 6.48 per cent of internet users in May 2007 and has been growing steadily ever since.
Windows remains dominant, accounting for 91.57 per cent of web user machines, but Apple's iPhone is securing its fourth place slot as the most used platform for internet browsing, with 0.15 per cent of total. While a small number, that's significant when contrasted to other systems used to access the Web, and how long some of these have been made available - it's higher than PlayStation, for example.

iPhone SDK shows bits of Managed Exchange

Latest news in shows that the second build of the SDK includes built-in support for managed Exchange Server settings, while that could be predicted on the basis of Apple's deal with Microsoft to license Exchange support, that the company has also chosen to build administrator support into the software is bound to generate excitement among infrastructure boffins. Wer vom ganzen Rummel um das iPhone schwer genervt ist, dürfte dieser Tage die US-Läden von Apple als Erholung empfinden. In diesen gibt es zwar eventuell noch Vorführgeräte zu begutachten, aber zum Teil keine iPhones mehr zu kaufen. HAVA player hits Nokia's internet tablets
