GM cranks up battery tests for plug-in Volt

General Motors doesn't have long before everyone and their cousin expects to see at least a few Volts on the road -- and it knows it. In an attempt to make sure the deadline is met, the firm has battery testing going on 'round the clock in Michigan and Germany that will theoretically simulate a decade of use in just two years. Additionally, it's placing batteries in test Malibus in order to get a feel for real-world results. Here's the story: four Italian students this weekend will take the iPhone SDK and begin a 36-hour marathon to develop an iPhone application. Nextel getting a WiFi iDEN BlackBerry this year
After some serious neglect, Sprint is finally giving the Nextel iDEN network some new devices, not the least of which is a WiFi BlackBerry, says Sprint CEO Dan Hesse. The phone will hit the network "later this year," and will be accompanied by phones from Sanyo, Samsung, Motorola and LG that will rock the Sprint CDMA, but will use Nextel capabilities for push-to-talk. Press Release: Apple is #1 in music
Source : ARS Technica via Apple PRYesterday Apple announced that iTunes is now the #1 music retailer in the United States, based on sales in January and February 2008. iTunes has managed to capture a 19% percent market share, beating Wal-Mart's 15%, and Best Buy's 13%. This is the first time a purely digital retailer has surpassed brick-and-mortar music sales. This has been quite a jump for Apple, who only just passed Amazon's market share values in July of 2007. This upward trend of digital sales is sure to stay, as is the drop in the sales of physical media.

Supercharger solar panel promises to give Freeloader a boost

Solar Technology's Freeloader solar charger was already a pretty attractive option as it was, but the company's now looking to give the portable charger a bit of a boost, with its new Supercharger panel promising to cut the charging time in half. Mit den angekündigten günstigen iPhone-Konditionen von T-Mobile ist das Apple-Mobiltelefon in Deutschland deutlich attraktiver geworden. Noch interessanter aber wird es mit der gestern vom iPhone Dev Team veröffentlichten "Ultimativen Freischaltlösung" Pwnage. Das Programm modifiziert nicht die Software an sich, sondern den Bootloader von iPhone und iPod touch. Software kann dadurch bereits vor der Übertragung an das Mobilgerät freigeschaltet werden und selbst dann darauf laufen, wenn ein Update darüber gespielt wird.

Auf der CeBIT 2008 in Hannover hatte T-Mobile neue Datentarife angekündigt. Dazu zählte auch eine Daten-Flatrate zum Monatspreis von 34,95 Euro, die ab dem 7. April 2008 gebucht werden kann. Boeing's prop-driven aircraft set the lone pilot aloft for about 20 minutes at a speed of 100-kilometres (62 miles) an hour at an altitude of about 1,000 meters. The 800-kilogram (1,760-pound) craft with a 16.3-meter (51-foot) wingspan is capable of flying for about 45 minutes under the power of its hydrogen fuel cells -- the airplane's batteries provided an additional boost for takeoff. The fuel cells harvest the energy produced by the chemical transformation of hydrogen and oxygen into water -- that makes the craft clean as well as near silent.

Apple's in development firmware iPhone Software 2.0 potentially supports a range of features that have been hoped for by users, including the capacity to stream music to Bluetooth speaker systems, printing and more.
Meanwhile, third-party developer Jajah has confirmed it intends producing a solution that will legitimately enable voice over IP calling using the Apple device, though only when using a WiFi connection.
Apple confirmed it would allow the development of VoIP applications in early March, when it announced the new software and the iPhone SDK. Jajah will ship its VoIP solution shortly after the iPhone Software 2.0 ships in June.

iTunes Festival jetzt auch in Berlin
Nach dem erfolgreichen Start der Konzertreihe iTunes Festival im letzten Jahr in London startet am 26. April nun das deutsche Pendant in Berlin. An 15 Abenden werden im Club Radialsystem V angesagte Künstler auftreten und deren Konzerte für den späteren Vertrieb über den iTunes Store aufgezeichnet. iPhone-Antenne von Griffin verstärkt Empfang
Bei neueren Mobiltelefonen sind die Antennen zum Empfang meist im Gerät eingebaut und von außen nicht mehr sichtbar. Vor allem optisch gefällt das vielen besser und lässt das Design des Gerätes stimmiger und runder erscheinen. Auch beim iPhone ist die Antenne nicht zu sehen. Der Hersteller Griffin Technology hat sich jetzt mit einem Empfangsverstärker für das iPhone beschäftigt, bei dem die Antenne wieder erkennbar wird.

Adobe veröffentlicht Director 11
Mit der Übernahme von Macromedia schluckte Adobe so manche Anwendung des ehemaligen Flash-Pioniers. Neben dem besagten Flash gehören dazu auch Freehand oder Dreamweaver und auch Director. Letzt genanntes erschien jetzt in einer neuen Version, obwohl viele an die Einstellung des Autoren-Programms zu Erstellung von interaktiven Spielen, Animationen und Simulationen glaubten. Hacker-Wettbewerb: Linux-System interessierte niemanden
Auf einem Hacker-Wettbewerb auf der CanSecWest wurde ein MacOS-System nach nur zwei Minuten gehackt und auf ein Windows-System sind Hacker nach drei Tagen kurz vor Ablauf des Wettbewerbs ebenfalls eingedrungen. Nur das Linux-System blieb unangetastet - wie sich nun zeigt, ist das sogar wörtlich zu nehmen. Denn es gab einfach keinen Versuch, das Sony-Notebook mit Ubuntu zu hacken. (Ubuntu)

Dell baut erneut Stellen ab
Dell will mehr Stellenkürzungen vornehmen als ursprünglich geplant. Wie CEO Michael Dell gestern bekannt gab, sollen im laufenden Quartal noch mehr als die bisher vorgesehenen 8800 Mitarbeiter das Unternehmen verlassen. Billigstrechner länger mit Windows XP verfügbar
Für Billigstrechner will Microsoft zumindest die Home-Ausführung von Windows XP länger als bisher geplant anbieten. Noch bis Mitte 2008 will Microsoft Windows XP verkaufen, danach wird - bis auf die aktuelle Ausnahme - nur noch Windows Vista angeboten. Intel Turbo Memory is not dead
Source: Clubic With its Santa Rosa platform, Intel tried to convince us of the usefulness of Turbo Memory technology (ex Robson) which uses a flash memory module placed on the motherboard to speed up the processing of certain data. In fact, the presence of 512 MB or 1 GB modules did almost nothing, apart from a higer cost. It has therefore been set aside by the manufacturers of laptops.
Intel did not abandon it, and should in the future propose an improved version (1.7 -- proving that the changes are not dramatic). It will provide a few new things such as support for larger memory cards, 2 or 4 GB and the ability to choose the software or process that will use it.
Maybe the arrival of DDR 3 in the coming laptops will help impose this technology. Indeed, the price of memory cards with this standard will be much higher than those with DDR2. So the Turbo Memory may yet be of interest in (partially) offsetting the lack of R

Intel predicts the end of dedicated video cards

According to Ron Fosner a specialist in the field at Intel, the rapid increase in the number of processor cores and power output could encompass dedicated video cards in the future.

Hynix has huge problems in the produciton of RAM
Hynix is one of the major manufacturers of memory chips in the world. Their products are often in the machines sold by Apple.
Since late 2007, the company has switched the production of its products to 66 nm and has met with big problems. They wasted almost 10% of production, which is very significant, almost 30 million memory chips per month.
Hynix finds itself unable to honor its contracts. This situation seems to be sufficient to cause what all manufacturers of RAM hoped for, namely a rebound the price of their products.

As announced previously, the Dev Team iPhone released the the PwnageTool application for Mac OSX. It will allow users to unlock iPhone by modifying in depth the Bootloader in order to bypass protection and update procedures which were giving nightmares to hackers and limiting the interest of unlocking the iPhone due to official firmware update. It is now possible with such tool to unlock the future beta version of the iPhone firmware which will be supplied with the SDK.

Griffin's ugly-ass ClearBoost iPhone antenna booster hits the scene

Griffin's antenna-stub sporting ClearBoost case for the iPhone just hit the streets, and opinions are already pouring in. The case involves the antenna, a bumper and a screen protector, and while the resulting combination is not much for loooks, iLounge found it to improve performance in certain situations. Apparently in very low coverage areas the ClearBoost isn't much help, but in wonky two or three bar situations ClearBoost added one or two bars. Dell to cut even more jobs as it reduces costs
