NVIDIA gobbles up ray tracing software maker RayScale

Details are pretty slim on this one at the moment, but PC Perspective is reporting that NVIDIA has snapped up the Utah-based start-up RayScale, a maker of ray tracing software. As PC Perspective points out, the move is made particularly interesting in light of some recent comments made by NVIDIA CTO David Kirk, who mused about the merging of ray tracing and rasterization into a "hybrid renderer" of sorts, but didn't offer any firm details on the company's plans at the time. Orange keeps the exclusive iPhone contract in France
Source : ReutersOrange has officially announced that they will keep their exclusive contract for the next model of the iPhone, as was implied by the rumour that says they have signed a contract with Apple until 2011.
It is really a pity, because due to the lack of competition, even though competition hardly exists in France, they will not have any reason to reduce the subscription tariff associated with the device.
No information was given on a possible change of the economic model by proposing, for example, a subsidy applied towards purchase of the iPhone.

Oppenheimer: Apple stock rated at 'outperform'

Rural wireless carriers file FCC petition opposing handset exclusivity

If you thought you were annoyed when one of the big wireless carriers locked up a phone you were after, you have no idea how frustrated small and rural wireless carriers are -- they've just filed a petition with FCC seeking to ban the practice. The 80 companies in the Rural Cellular Association serve small markets not well-covered by the big guys, like parts of New Mexico, Idaho, Kansas, Maine, North Dakota, and Utah, and Wyoming, and they say that carrier exclusivity deals not affect their bottom line, but also deprive consumers of desirable phones like the iPhone and upcoming Blackberry Bold. So word on the street (literally) is that a large number of people are queuing in line outside of Apple's flagship store on 5th Avenue in New York City -- keep in mind the Cube is open 24 hours a day. Our intrepid girl-on-the-scene reports that the group is more than 60-deep, though most people seem confused about what they're waiting for, but some believe they're actually camping out for a 3G iPhone. .Mac als Bindeglied zwischen dem Apple-Rechner und dem Internet zu schaffen, war Apples Clou im Jahr 2002. Mittlerweile sind rund 6 Jahre vergangen und man baute den Service aus. Die Speicherkapazität wuchs und die Vernetzung mit einigen Applikationen entwickelte sich weiter. Jedoch nicht der Preis für das Jahresabo, der liegt immer noch bei 99 Euro für eine Einzellizenz. Self-propelled microboats could save your life

Cheng Luo, an engineer from the Univeristy of Texas at Arlington, has created a self-propelled microboat based on the toy boats he played with as a child. When an object -- say, a toy boat -- floating on water has a drop of oil on it, the change in surface tension propels that object in the opposite direction. With this principle in mind, Luo has created a microboat that measures just millimeters, contains its own reservoir of isopropyl alcohol as a propellant, and cruises at around 30 cm per second. Griffin Technology has introduced the world’s first FM transmitter for the iPhone, a variant of its iTrip device.
That’s sure to be a popular gadget, and also suggests more such peripherals will emerge for the device in future, as iPhone generates its own surrounding ecosystem of third-party add-ons, just like iPod.
iTrip AutoPilot plugs directly into the 12V power port in your car while connecting to your iPhone or iPod through the dock connector. Built-in software scans the FM frequencies to find the best one to play music through, and the system supports RDS, meaning you can see what track’s playing on your car radio display.

France Telecom keeps iPhone exclusively in France
France Telecom’s Orange brand will retain the exclusive distribution rights for the iPhone in France, a head honcho at the company said today.
"It will remain an exclusive contract in France," Chief Financial Officer Gervais Pellissier told the Reuters Global Technology, Media and Telecoms summit in Paris this morning.
This confirms that in all three European markets in which Apple chose exclusive partnerships with operators in order to bring iPhone to those countries will retain exclusivity. Mobile web use explodes, Apple, RIM to profit...
Apple’s iPhone has sparked interest and use of web browsing using smartphones, particularly in the US, where such use has climbed 89 per cent.

Am 24. Mai öffnet der erste kanadische Apple Store in Vancouver, wobei Apple ankündigt, Neukunden auch über das iPhone zu informieren, obwohl dieses derzeit in Kanda noch gar nicht erhältlich ist. iPhone 3G in FNAC?
The FNAC is the French giant for consumer electronic shops, with several stores also open in key European countries. According to our information, the FNAC could have signed up an Agreement with Apple to sell the iPhone 2 in its shop network. It remains unclear if such move from Cupertino comes to cool down the legal fight initiated by the FNAC to get the right to sell the iPhone (here and here), but it seems that the FNAC is already actively preparing the launch of the iPhone 3G. The Apple Premium Resellers should also be granted to sell the iPhone 3G under conditions we do not fully know yet, but still linked to the exclusive Orange partnership apparently.

Intel to Launch 6-core Xeon
According to vr Zone, Intel will launch new Xeon CPUs, code name Dunnington, in Q3 2008.
Those CPUs will be the first one from Intel to feature 6 cores. While being based on Penryn architecture, they will not be compatible with the motherboard and socket used in the Mac Pro (x7xxx series, while Apple uses x5xxx Xeon). Optical disks made of paper
Japanese researchers have developed optical disks made of paper.
With a thickness of only 0,1 mm they have the advantage over the polycarbonate discs, which cannot spin faster than 10000 rpm without risking disintegration of the disk, they can reach, without problem, a speed of 15000 rpm, and could thus offer data flows for reading reaching of 250 Mbits/s. This is equivalent to 7x Blu-ray.
The originators of this product hope to see it replacing the long term backup system based on magnetic tapes usually used for this.

Qualcomm announces first IMOD-based Mirasol displays

Grasshoppper "robot" sets new high-jump record
