Cowon gets official with upgraded A3, Q5W PMPs

We'd already heard that the Cowon A3 would be getting a bump to 80GB, and the company has now not only gotten official about a US release for it, but dropped word of new 80GB Q5W as well. You can look for the upgraded A3 to land in the US first on May 26th for $440 (a good deal less than the $691 Euro-to-dollar conversion we heard about initially), with the 80GB Q5W following in late June for $600. Both models are otherwise identical to their less capacious counterpart

Refurbished iPhones are an excellent source of previous users' data

It looks like you might have to think twice before flipping that old iPhone on eBay when the 3G version finally hits -- it appears that restoring the phone doesn't actually erase the contents of the flash, meaning that your data is available to anyone with the proper tools until it's overwritten. Making matters worse, it appears that Apple doesn't do a low-level format when refurbishing iPhones either -- an Oregon State Police detective was able to use forensic software to pull files, emails, and screenshots off an out-of-the-box refurbished iPhone. iPhone 3G: Available for the WWDC Keynote?
As one could have expected it with the launch of the WWDC getting everyday closer, rumors about the iPhone 3G are flowering and spreading on the web.
The last one has been launched by the website Gizmodo, citing sources close to the project, that the iPhone 3G will be announced by Steve Jobs (so far nothing new), but it should be available right after the keynote.
As we reported it earlier (here and here), Apple will change the business model for the iPhone, at least in some countries (including those covered by EU carriers). This would then imply that carrier could apply large discount on the official price, by favoring cash-back based on 24-month subscription plan or fee-based service. So far, only UK and Germany have been offering discount

Oilman T. Boone Pickens drops $2 billion on wind power

Boone Pickens recently announcing that he's spending $2 billion to build a 667 wind turbine-strong wind farm in Texas. Apple will introduce the iPhone at WWDC on June 9, the latest report claims.
Meanwhile, Apple’s set to work with Korea Telecom and NTT DoCoMo to launch the device in Japan, South Korea, India, Indonesia and China; and Apple’s existing iPhone partners in the UK, France and Germany seem set to keep their exclusive status, even while the company makes deals with multiple carriers in other territories.

Symbian: Wollen Weltmarktanteil von über 7 Prozent

NRW und Nokia: Einigung auf Vergleich im Subventionsstreit
Der finnische Mobiltelefonhersteller Nokia und das Land Nordrhein-Westfalen haben sich auf einen Vergleich im millionenschweren Subventionsstreit um das geschlossene Bochumer Werk verständigt. Danach will der finnische Konzern die bisher vorgeschlagene Einigungssumme erhöhen. Apple klagt: Nach iPhoneScout nun Atico
Erst vor kurzem haben wir über das Schreiben einer Düsseldorfer Anwaltskanzlei an die Betreiber des iPhoneScout-Internetshops - hier ein Kommentar der Shop-Inhaberin - berichtet. Gut 25.000 forderte Apple dort für den Vertrieb von iPhone-Plagiaten. Und auch auf dem Zubehör-Markt geht es zur Zeit wieder Rund. Aktuell ist Atico im Visier der hauseigenen Rechtsabteilung aus Cupertino.
Der Zubehörhersteller vermarktet seine Soundsysteme und Docking-Stationen unter der Marke Living Solutions und war nicht unter dem "Made for iPod"-Programm lizenziert. Macworld schreibt:

US handset sales droop in Q1, RIM slides into top 5

Sure enough, handset sales declined 22-percent in Q1 2008, though the industry did move some 31 million mobiles during the post-holiday quarter. To protect its Made for iPod branding, Apple has filed a lawsuit seeking to stop Atico International USA from selling unauthorized iPod accessories. In the document filed last Wednesday, apple accuses Atico International USA of patent infringement, trademark infringement, and unfair competition. Indeed, Apple Legal claims that Atico manufactures and distributes various iPod accessories branded under the name Living Solutions without having got a license or an agreement from Apple.
For sure Apple is aiming to take the opportunity to remind other companies manufacturing iPod peripherals that one has to pay the royalties to get the right to distribute products made for the iPod.

We’ve been watching Napster’s decline for some time, but now the company is fighting back with the introduction of a new download service that takes the market wars to Apple - because it’s made a move to drop DRM..
Napster has announced that all six million tracks it sells through its music service will from now on be available in DRM-free MP3 format, (256kbps bitrate). This means each 99-cents track will play on any device, including Macs, iPods and the iPhone.

Bitkom warnt vor Verzögerungen bei Gesundheitskarte
Der Bundesverband Informationswirtschaft, Telekommunikation und neue Medien (Bitkom) hat vor weiteren Verzögerungen bei der Einführung der elektronischen Gesundheitskarte gewarnt. "Zeitkritisch ist derzeit die Ausschreibung der zentralen IT-Infrastruktur, insbesondere des Datennetzes, durch die Betriebsorganisation Gematik", sagte Bitkom-Präsident August-Wilhelm Scheer anlässlich des 111. Apple has some good iPod offers at the refurb store today. The current iPod Nano models are sold at 40 € below their original price: 109 € for the 4 Gb and 159 € for the 8 Gb model.
You should ignore the Shuffle and iPod Touch, since they're only 10 € cheaper compared to new products.
The Apple TV 160 Gb also returns at 267 €, which is the price it should have if Apple Europe wants to get to the same level as in the US.
And finally, on the Mac part, there are still current-generation MacBooks, and previous-generations iMacs for sale. Forget about the 8-core 3 Ghz Mac Pro (rev 1), which is too expensive compared to a new machine, and even equipped with an outdated Geforce 7300 GT!

Information about Next Generation GPUs
June will most likely be the month chosen by AMD to announce the new generation of GPUs. Similar announcements should be done by NVidia couple of days later. However, some information starts leaking despite NDA.
- NVidia will change the branding name of its cards, dropping the GeForce 8xxx or 9xxx, to a shorter version: GTX 2x0. NVidia should also revise its aging architecture used on the current GPU generation and now about 2 years old. The high-end model, aka GTX 280 should feature 1 GB of VRAM on a 512 bits bus, and sport 240 core units.
- AMD will try to better compete with NVidia with its Radeon 48xx series. It will be the fist card to use GDDR5 RAM modules. AS with NVidia, high-end models should feature 1 GB VRAM, and the GPU clock speed should break the 1 GHz frequency barrier.
For sure the summer will be hot on the GPU battle front, and first tests released should allow us to define a winner, but one will have to consider the three GPU segments: entry-level, mid-

iPhone Atlas meldet, dass sich private Daten von einem iPhone, zum Beispiel vor dem Wiederkauf, nicht wirklich löschen lassen. Nike+ Laufdaten lokal verwalten: Neki++
Mit Neki++ lassen sich Laufdaten vom iPod nano importieren und lokal verwalten. Wir hatten das kostenlose und plattformunabhängige, auf Java basierende Programm bereits im Januar vorgestellt, mit der eben veröffentlichen Version 0.901 kommt die Möglichkeit, sich in einem Kalender Trainingsziele zu setzen - zum Beispiel einen 5 km Lauf am Mittwoch und einen 120 min langen Lauf am Samstag. Neki++ überprüft dann, ob ein Lauf stattgefunden hat und zeigt per Farbcode an, ob das gesteckte Ziel erreicht wurde oder nicht. Ein paar Screenshots der aktuellen Version findet ihr hier.

Die Stromversorgung von Digitalkameras ist kein leichtes Unterfangen. Zum einen erwarten die Kunden, mit einer Ladung hundert Bilder und mehr schießen zu können, zum anderen sollen die Kameras kompakt bleiben. Robuste Wasserzeichen sollen vor Bilderklau schützen
Urheberrechtsverletzungen im Fotobereich gibt es schon länger als das Internet - doch die digitale Kopiermöglichkeit macht es wesentlich leichter, Bilder ohne Zustimmung des Fotografen weiter zu verwenden. Mit mehr oder minder sichtbaren Wasserzeichen wird immer wieder versucht, dem fröhlichen Kopieren einen Riegel vorzuschieben.
