iPhone, iMac win world-class design award
Apple has taken two of the world creative industry’s most-coveted awards, a pair of Black Pencils from the D&AD, one for the iMac, another for the iPhone.
The D&AD winners were announced at an awards ceremony held in London tonight, on 15 May. Apple’s a regular winner at these events, taking two of the slightly less-coveted Yellow Pencils in 2006 (for the iPod's video and nano).
In 2005, Apple’s head of industrial design Jonathan Ive won his own award, a special one made in recognition of his world-class achievements in design, the D&AD President's Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Industry. VIA reportedly set to roll out 45nm, dual-core processors by 2009

O2 Confirms New iPhone Is Coming Soon
Source : Macworld UKIt it seems to be almost official, and rumors have been preading so much on the web, some executives have problems to keept it secret anymore further, even the little they know about the subject.
While yesterday Intel Executive's story was official denied, a representative from O2 confirmed today that they will launch the new iPhone model together with Apple in the coming weeks.
For O2 the iPhone has been a good deal, as the carrier has successfully added 206,000 new contract customers in the first three months of 2008, an excellent result strongly driven by the iPhone sales.
So are those iPhones available from Orange already the iPhone version 2?

T-Mobile Announced to Have Shipped its 100,000th iPhones
Quite some time after the French and UK carriers, respectively Orange and O2 , T-Mobile announced to have shipped its 100,000th iPhone. This figure is for sure below expectation, as well as in some extend sales recorded in France. However, as the iPhone Rev1 was not a 3G mobile phone, competitors' models might have been more attractive for European customers.
This hypothesis will be seen challenged when the iPhone Rev2 will be launched, and one will see if 3G and potentially the GPS function can really give the iPhone the same success as in the USA.

ATI Radeon 4800 series launch details revealed

Google hat Google Text & Tabellen um einige Funktionen erweitert: So lassen sich Spreadsheets jetzt mit Fragebögen verknüpfen. Nach dem Speichern der Tabelle, muss hierfür lediglich der Share-Button gefolgt von dem To-fill-out-a-form-Button gedrückt werden. Anschließend lassen sich beispielsweise Multiple-Choice-Fragen erstellen. iPhone 2 mit Atom-Kraft oder nicht?
Wirbel um eine angebliche Aussage des Chefs von Intel Deutschland, Hannes Schwaderer. Der hatte zum 40. Geburtstag des Chip-Herstellers auch über die mobile Zukunft gesprochen. Hier ruhen die Hoffnungen vor allem auf dem Atom-Chip, der vom Subnotebook im EeePC-Format bis zum Mobiltelefon millionenfach verwendet werden soll. Schwaderer soll auf dem Treffen das kommende iPhone als ein Gerät mit Atom-Chip bezeichnet haben. Außerdem sei das Display größer, aber das Gerät insgesamt flacher. Soweit will das ein Redakteur der PC Games Hardware mitbekommen haben - ohne allerdings dem Kollegen mitzuteilen, wie man "iPhone" schreibt.

Eee-PC verhilft Deutschlands PC-Markt zu hoher Steigerung
In Deutschland wurden im ersten Quartal 2008 rund 2,9 Millionen PCs verkauft, dies entspricht einem Anstieg von 17,4 Prozent gegenüber dem Vergleichszeitraum des Vorjahres. Der Markt wurde weiter durch den starken Notebook-Absatz bestimmt, der 57 Prozent der gesamten PC-Verkäufe ausmachte. Bitkom: Mobilfunk und VoIP machen Festnetz zu schaffen
Der Telekommunikationsmarkt verschiebt sich nach Angaben des Bundesverbands Informationswirtschaft, Telekommunikation und neue Medien (Bitkom) immer mehr von der Festnetztelefonie in Richtung Handy- und Internettelefonie. Letztere legte 2007 um 78 Prozent zu, gefolgt von Mobilfunk mit einem Zuwachs von 19,6 Prozent. Telefonate per Festnetz sind hingegen mit minus 3,4 Prozent rückläufig.

AT & T hat in den USA für alle Shops die Order ausgegeben, nur noch ein iPhone pro Kunde zu verkaufen. Der Boy-Genius-Report ist an eine entsprechende E-Mail an alle Mitarbeiter gelangt, in der es schlicht heißt, "mit sofortiger Wirkung können Kunden nur noch ein iPhone pro Person kaufen." Die Bestände des "alten" iPhone scheinen sich also weiterhin zu leeren, denn es ist ja mittlerweile ein offenes Geheimnis, dass spätestens zur WWDC im Juni ein neues Modell erwartet wird.

Neue Bilder vom Bau des Münchner Apple Store
Apple ist momentan mit dem Bau seines ersten eigenen Retail Store in München beschäftigt. Vor ein paar Tagen suchte man bereits 13 Mitarbeiter für den neuen Shop. Wie nun neue Bilder von Mac Gazette (hier, hier und hier) zeigen, sind die Arbeiten an dem Gebäude in der Rosenstraße in vollem Gange. Die Fassade ist zwar noch mit reichlich Planen und Gerüsten umstellt, über das Äußere des Stores kann aber schon jetzt spekuliert werden.

VIA strebt 45-nm-Fertigung für 2009 an
VIA hat aktuell einen kleinen Höhenflug, was unter anderem den vielen Neuvorstellungen kleiner Notebooks zuzuschreiben ist. Telekom steigt bei griechischem Telekommunikationskonzern ein
Die Deutsche Telekom und die griechische Regierung haben sich über eine Beteiligung des Unternehmens an dem Telekommunikationskonzern Hellenic Telecommunications Organization (OTE) geeinigt. OTE, Marktführer im Festnetz- und Mobilfunkgeschäft in Griechenland, ist nun zu einem Viertel im Besitz der Bonner. Der Zukauf von 25 Prozent plus einer Aktie kostete die Telekom 3,2 Milliarden Euro. Zusammen halten die Telekom und der griechische Staat nach Abschluss der Transaktion eine Mehrheit von 50 Prozent plus zwei Stimmen an der OTE.

Google baut Vorsprung als größter Suchanbieter weiter aus
Hitwise hat im April für Google erneut einen größeren Marktanteil im Bereich Internetsuche ermittelt. Das Unternehmen erreichte in den USA einen Anteil von 67,9 Prozent gegenüber 67,25 Prozent im Vormonat und 65,26 Prozent gegenüber dem Vorjahreszeitraum (April 2007). Mit dem Mai-Patchday bringt Microsoft unter anderem einen Patch für eine Sicherheitslücke in Microsoft Office, die im Security Bulletin MS08-026 veröffentlicht wurde. Demnach ist es einem Angreifer durch manipulierte RTF-Dateien möglich, beliebigen Code auf Rechnern auszuführen, auf denen solche Dateien geöffnet werden. Davon betroffen sind diesmal auch Benutzer von Office für Macintosh in den Versionen 2004 und 2008. Anders als für die Windows-Versionen gibt es für Macintosh-Rechner jedoch keinen eigenen Patch.

Intel dementiert ZDNet-Bericht über größeres iPhone
Intel hat die in dem gestrigen ZDNet-Bericht zitierten Aussagen von Geschäftsführer Hannes Schwaderer über zukünftige iPhone-Modelle dementiert. Schwaderer habe lediglich generelle Bemerkungen zu möglichen Mobile Internet Devices (MIDs) gemacht und nicht über zukünftige iPhone-Modelle spekuliert. Das Apple iPhone sei lediglich als Beispiel von kleinen Internet-Zugangsgeräten in diesem Zusammenhang genannt worden. "Intel weiß nichts über zukünftige Produkte anderer Hersteller und kann demnach darüber auch nichts sagen", sagte Pressesprecher Mike Cato gegenüber ZDNet.de.

Google wird mit Google Search schon bald mehr Gewinn erwirtschaften als Microsoft mit Windows. Zu diesem Ergebnis kommt der frühere Analyst und Blogger Henry Blodget vom Silicon Alley Insider. Zum gleichen Zeitpunkt im nächsten Jahr werde Googles Suchgeschäft mehr Geld in die Kassen spülen als das Betriebssystem. Dabei sei der Profit aus dem Online-Anzeigengeschäft mit Google Adsense noch nicht einmal berücksichtigt. Studie: Softwarepiraterie kostet jährlich 48 Milliarden Dollar
Laut einer aktuellen Studie der Business Software Alliance (BSA) haben Softwarepiraten 2007 weltweit einen Schaden von 48 Milliarden Dollar verursacht. Will Apple ATOMize the Mac mini?
Let's go back a bit in the Mac mini history. A rumor indicates that the Mac mini was developed following a request from some shareholders for a true entry-level desktop computer, while Apple had no real plan for such hardware.
Of course, we do not know if it is true or not, but the past Mac mini history and the lack of interest from Cupertino to upgrade it regularly, tends to confirm such hypothesis. Even recently, instead of upgrading its CPU/GPU/HD or other features, Apple decided to simply cut the price.

ATOM-Powered iPhone or Mac-Tablet?
Source : News.comAs part of an Intel-Events in Munich, Germany, Intel Germany executive, Hannes Schwaderer, reported that a nuclear-chip type, meaning Intel's Atom processor, in the future iPhone. Cnet blogger Tom Krazit is rather expecting a Tablet-type Mac which could be powered by the ATOM CPU, rather than the iPhone as the ATOM reference platform and heat release and consumption makes the CPU not really compatible for being used in a mobile phone.

WWDC: No More Sits Available
Probably the best way to show the amazing growing interest buzzing around the Mac and the iPhone, registration at the WWDC is closed as there is no more sits free. This is excellent news for Apple, as it shows the interest of developers for the iPhone/Mac platform; and also sends a clear message to competition.
One can even think different, and see in the recent move to extend the registration discount from April 25th till May 12th, a way to push developers and attendees to quickly register and get all sits sold out one month before the WWDC keynote to be delivered by Steve Jobs.

Houston being overrun by electronics-killing ants

We'll let you read the hed again -- nope, it's not a joke. Apparently millions of tiny swarming ants called "crazy raspberry ants" are causing quite a ruckus down in Houston after they accidentally arrived on board a cargo ship and started busily invading homes and offices, where they are attracted to electrical equipment. So far they've messed up sewage pumps, cause fire alarms to go haywire, destroyed computers, and taken out at least one gas meter -- and since they're resistant to over-the-counter ant killers and each colony has multiple queens, they're nearly impossible to kill. In first place, one learns that the MacBook Air largely contributed to the total rise in sales of the Mac (+ 51% compared to the previous year) recorded for the last quarter. But these very encouraging results seem to confirm that Apple made a sucess with MacBook Air, in terms of positioning.

WWDC ausverkauft
Zum ersten mal in der Geschichte ist die World Wide Developers Conference ausverkauft. Apple hat aufgrund von Platzbeschränkungen den weiteren Ticket-Verkauf gestoppt. Dies liegt einerseits natürlich am gestiegenen Mac-Marktanteil, vorrangig wohl aber an der Einführung des iPhone SDKs.

Weniger Schwarzkopien in Deutschland
Nach einer Studie des Marktforschungsinstituts IDC im Auftrag der Herstellervereinigung BSA werden in Deutschland immer seltener unlizenzierte Softwarekopien eingesetzt. Binnen Jahresfrist sank ihr Anteil um einen Prozentpunkt und liegt nun bei 27 Prozent. Das wäre allerdings immer noch ein Wert von 1,33 Milliarden Euro. PS3 firmware 2.35 released, doesn't fix GTA IV woes

For those of you continuing to have Grand Theft Auto IV lockups on your PS3 even after the May 7th Rockstar patch tough noogies. The latest 2.35 firmware won't specifically help. Sony says that the "minor update" will "improve stability of some PS3 titles" -- then clarifies that GTA IV is not part of the vagary. Nevertheless, Sony does say that they "have a identified a solution that should resolve the issue." Größeres iPhone oder gleich Mini-Tablet?
Intel Deutschland-Chef Hannes Schwaderer ist, wenn es stimmt was Mac Rumors zitiert, kein Mensch dem man seine Geschäftsgeheimnisse anvertrauen will. Auf der 40er-Geburtstagsfeier des Chipherstellers soll er von einem kommenden, "etwas größeren" iPhone auf Basis von Intels neuem Atom Chip fabuliert haben. Kommt dieses Gerät mit etwas größerem Bildschirm (iPhone, iPod touch oder gar Table-PC) wirklich, dürfte Apple-Boss Steve Jobs angesichts der Plaudertasche an höchster Stelle bei Intel Deutschland alles andere als "amused" sein. Ist doch auch mehr verständlich, dass Jobs seine neuen Produkte lieber selbst ankündigt, anstatt dies einem Zulieferer zu überlassen.

We got to spend a little bit of time with Aliph's new Jawbone headset, and we'll confess we're a tad smitten. Apple Store München: So schaut's aus
Wie bereits berichtet, werden für den kommenden Münchener Apple Store bereits jede Menge Mitarbeiter gesucht. Recht aktuelle Bilder der aktuellen Bauphase finden sich bei der Mac Gazette und man sieht, es ist noch einiges zu tun bis die Eröffnung statt finden kann.
Laut Gary Allen von ifoAppleStore schreibt Apple die Stellen für gewöhnlich sechs Monate vor der Eröffnung eines Ladengeschäfts aus, es deutet also alles auf eine Öffnung im Herbst oder kurz vor Weihnachten hin.

Constellation Light puts LED twist on chandelier

Console numbers released: Xbox 360 tops 10M US sales, 9.2M PS3s sold worldwide last year

Microsoft is making some noise today about the Xbox 360's sales numbers -- it's the first of this generation of consoles to top 10M sales in the US. That's well ahead of the Wii, which stands at 8.8M, and the PS3, which has under half the 360's installed base at 4.1M units sold. Intel Germany World's managing director Hannes Schwaderer just revealed what a lot of people have been predicting. A larger iPod Touch and iPhone is on the way and powered by the intel Atom Processors. According to ZDNet Germany, Schwaderer said the devices will sport a Nokia N810-like 720x480 resolution.
