HTC Touch Diamond unboxed, packaging worthy of the phone

Nothing new to report on the Touch Diamond's tech here, but wow, look how fun the box is! Of course, we know you're all waiting to see what they stuffed in the wedge-shaped package, and the answer is a charger, headset, USB cable, a manual or two, and the software. Shinoda Plasma showcases 125-inch curved PTA display

Surely you remember Shinoda Plasma and its obscenely large PTA display, right? Unfortunately, this one's no 142-incher, but 125-inches of curvaceous screen real estate still isn't anything to sneeze at -- especially when we're talking about an actual prototype. The 3- x 1-meter display consists of three PTA (plasma tube array) modules connected together, and it features a rather uninspiring 960 x 360 resolution but weighs just 7.9-pounds. Angstrom Power shows off G2 portable fuel cell power source

Licht-LAN statt Funk-LAN

Soulseek for iPhones
Here’s an interesting one for all you jailbroken iPhone users out there: the developers behind Soulseek have introduced iSisk, a file-sharing client for jailbroken iPhones.
Now, as we all know, Soulseek was developed by former Napster programmer, Nir Arbel. And while it isn’t as widely-used as other file-sharing applications, meaning its kind of a place where people go to steal music from independent labels and artists (you know, the people who don’t have the kind of legal funds of the RIAA, the indies who were prepared to reach a deal with Napster 1).

Als unglückliche Gewinnerin der "iPhone-Lotterie", bei der Apple jeden Monat ein Rendezvous mit der Rechtsabteilung verlost, musste Ecamm Network den Namen von iPhoneDrive verändern - und änderte ihn in MegaPhone. Ob dieser Name auch geschützt war, verrät Ecamm nicht, jedenfalls wurden der Name nun erneut geändert: MegaPhone heißt nun PhoneView.

Max-Planck-Forscher: Comcast blockiert dauerhaft BitTorrent
Forscher am Max-Planck-Institut für Softwaresysteme haben herausgefunden, dass der amerikanische Kabelnetzbetreiber Comcast offensichtlich systematisch und dauerhaft das BitTorrent-Protokoll blockiert. Mit einer Software hatten die Saarbrücker den Datenaustausch über BitTorrent simuliert. Dabei stellte sich heraus, dass Kabelnetzbetreiber in den USA und Singapur den Datentransfer über BitTorrent stark einschränken. Solarial solar blimp concept could aid in disaster relief, terrify villagers

Getting power to disaster-affected areas is always a tough task, but Andrew Leinonen's undergrad industrial design thesis (and recent first place entry in the 2008 ACIDO Rocket Show) might be able to solve the problem in an efficient and clever way. Dubbed Solarial, the idea is to use small unmanned airships made out of materials embedded with CIGS solar cells to autonomously deliver clean power to disaster sites by deploying anchored "power boxes" that have 12 total 120V outlets and 2 240V sockets. Obviously this is just a concept, but it's a clever one -- let's hope someone with the cash to make it happens finds out about it.

Offenes Sicherheitsloch im Internet Explorer
Im Internet Explorer wurde ein Sicherheitsleck entdeckt, das im schlimmsten Fall zum Ausführen von Schadcode missbraucht werden kann. Der Fehler steckt in der Funktion zum Ausdrucken einer Linkliste auf einer Webseite. MacBook upgrade set for Q3
Apple is moving toward the release of a redesigned MacBook, a new report emanating from the company’s Asian Mac manufacturers claims.
AU Optronics Corp. and Chi Mei Optoelectronics Corp. have been signed-up to produce flat-panel screens for the new MacBook models, confirmed the Commercial Times this morning, citing “sources”.
In line with Apple’s continued marketshare growth for its laptop offerings, Apple has set strong targets for sales of the new device, which MarketWatch claims is set for launch in the third quarter of 2008 (so that’s somewhere between July and September, people). Apple is aiming for three million MacBook sales. The two flat-panel manufacturers are the two largest in Taiwan, the report adds.

Orange confirms iPhone in 12 countries
France Telecom’s Orange mobile phone unit today announced a deal with Apple to bring the iPhone to a dozen additional countries.
The network will offer Apple’s device in Austria, Belgium, the Dominican Republic, Egypt, Jordan, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Switzerland and Orange’s African markets later this year.
Once again, this news quadruple confirms Apple to be moving away from its original strategy of offering iPhone through exclusive launch partners, as Swisscom this week also confirmed plans to offer iPhone in Switzerland. Vodafone will also offer iPhone in France and Egypt.

DIY: Individuelle iPod- und Laptoptaschen

OECD mahnt zu Umstieg auf IPv6
Die OECD hat in einem Report Regierungen und Wirtschaft aufgefordert, zur Zukunftssicherung der Internetwirtschaft verstärkt zusammenzuarbeiten. Hintergrund ist, dass der aktuell genutzt IPv4-Adressraum (Internet Protocol version 4) für die Kommmunikation im Internet bereits zu fast 85 Prozent erschöpft ist und nach aktuellen Schätzungen 2011 aufgebraucht sein könnte. Die Lösung, so der OECD-Report, sei der Umstieg auf den IPv4-Nachfolger IPv6, der den verfügbaren Adressraum erheblich erweitere.

iPhone Schweiz: Swisscom und Orange
Wie bereits in Italien wollen auch in der Schweiz zwei Mobilfunkkonzerne die nötigen Verträge mit Apple in der Tasche haben, um die eidgenössische iPhone-Versorgung sicherzustellen. Sharp Unveils its Direct Methanol Fuel Cells
After Sony couple of days ago, Sharp unveiled its Direct Methanol Fuel Cells. The company announced to have achieved the world's highest power density for direct methanol fuel cells (DMFC) for mobile equipment, with a result of 0.3W/cc. According to Sharp, this new technology could make it possible to develop fuel cells that have almost the same volume but a longer continuous-use lifespan than lithium-ion batteries, which are the main type currently in use.
However, there is no availability date for such fuel cell, and we will most likely have to wait for years before seeing the first fuel-cell powered-based device hitting the market.

Researchers tout spreadable, self-powered OLEDs

GadgetsIt looks like we could one day be buying our OLED displays by the jar or the bucket-full, at least if some researchers from Sumitomo Chemical and Mitsubishi Chemical have their way. They're now working on what they describe as "spreadable" OLEDs, which could either be spread or "painted" on virtually any surface, leaving an OLED screen that would be just 100nm thick. As if that wasn't enough, the spreadable concoction would also double as a solar panel that'd keep the OLEDs powered, something that's apparently possible

AT&T iPhone WiFi launch cancelled, on hiatus
AT&T on Thursday had scheduled its iPhone WiFi service to commence, but pulled the plug at the last minute, with little explanation as to why.
