BlackBerry Curve now available on Verizon

iPhone Doom developers speak up
iPhone development is a “dawdle”, said the developers behind the project to port Doom to the device - revealing the first version of the port was created in just a week.
Developer Psychochromatic explains: “Looking at the hardware specs, I knew iPhone would be able to play a simple game like Doom no problem as it was open-source and already ran on the click-wheel iPod running Linux. I knew Stepwhite, who I work with on Mac projects, and as he'd just bought himself an iPhone and was working with the unofficial tool-chain I jokingly told him he had one week to port Doom to iPhone, and all it had to do was run; he didn't have to implement controls. One week later, he proudly linked me to his Doom port homepage.”

You know you're in for a treat any time your favorite gargantuan Texas-based computer company claims to have captured the "downtown art scene" and "youth culture" on a laptop lid, but we've gotta give Dell credit for these new designs courtesy of Mike Ming. Unfortunately, the new "Bunch O Surfers" and "Sea Sky" (pictured) looks have been tacked onto Dell's boring-as-could-be Inspiron 1525 budget laptop. AT&T Employees told not to go anywhere from June 15th to July 12th
Engadget is saying that AT&T employees just got the summer of fun email that they got last year. Expect to be bolted to your posts for a summer blockbuster product. What? We have no idea what is expected around then.
Just as a little reminder, last year's iPhone launched on June 29th. I guess it takes two weeks to set up the displays and learn how to say "take this home and connect it to the computer."

Noch ist die iPhone-Software Version 2.0 nicht veröffentlicht und als Vorversion lediglich ausgewählten Entwicklern zugänglich - Drittanbieterprogramme lassen sich nach einem "Jailbreak" aber nach wie vor auf aktuellen iPhones und iPod touches installieren. Researchers develop copper nanowires for field-emission displays

The iPhone 3G to Reach Europe in August?
According to the New York Times, quoting information provided person close to the situation, the launch if the iPhone 3G in Europe should be in August. This information came as part of today's announcement of Apple-Vodafone partnership to distribute this popular device in 10 additional countries.
The goal could be to offer the new device right before the most important holiday period, giving future customers the possibility to be connected while being on the move.

A friendly neighborhood AT&T employee forwarded us a memo for AT&T retail store employees that could provide a rather telling clue about the next-gen iPhone's release date this summer. A similar memo went out last year around this time requesting that employees not take any vacations between June 15 and July 15, and this year those dates are June 15 and July 12 -- which seems suspiciously early, but that's what the man says. Vodafone today announced it has signed an agreement with Apple to sell the iPhone in ten of its markets around the globe. Later this year, Vodafone customers in Australia, the Czech Republic, Egypt, Greece, Italy, India, Portugal, New Zealand, South Africa and Turkey will be able to purchase the iPhone for use on the Vodafone network.
This is a real success for Vodafone, and might illustrate the potential of the iPhone, as initially Vodafone refused to start a partnership with Apple for the UK market, and O2 was then the winner. This is a huge market of potential users for Vodafone, and the carrier will have to develop the corresponding infrastructures to offer a complete "iPhone experience" for the users.

Hard drive recovered from shuttle Columbia used to complete experiment

Although it's been several years since the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster, it looks like some of the data gathered during the orbiter's final mission will be put to good use. A hard drive salvaged from the wreckage contains the results of an experiment to study the way xenon gas flows in microgravity, and the results will be published in April in a journal called Physical Review E. The 400MB Seagate drive was originally thought to be destroyed, but workers and engineers reconstructing the orbiter from the remaining debris found it during the process and sent it off for recovery, where 99 percent of the data was extracted. Besitzer eines "gejailbreakten" iPhone oder iPod touch dürfen sich über eine neue Version des Installer freuen. Yahoo: Kursverluste und Rechtfertigung
Nachdem Microsoft am Wochenende offiziell das Angebot für Yahoo zurückgezogen hat, bröckelt nun der Kurs des Internetkonzerns an den Börsen. In Frankfurt verlor der Kurs 19 Prozent, im vorbörslichen Handel der New Yorker NASDAQ sank der Kurs sogar um 21,8 Prozent auf 22,41 US-Dollar.

Neue Battery Packs: Stromnachschub für unterwegs
Mit dem Battery Pack and Charger und dem Mini Battery Pack and Charger hat Kensington zwei Zusatzakkus für das iPhone und iPods mit Dockanschluss vorgestellt, die auch als Ladegerät für unterwegs verwendet werden können. Der Hersteller verspricht mit dem kleinen Aufsteckakku bis zu 30 Stunden zusätzliche Musik bzw. drei weitere Stunden iPhone-Gesprächszeit, das größere Ladepack soll gar 100 Stunden Musik und sechs Stunden Gesprächszeit zusätzlich bringen.

Creative's Vado cheapcorder revealed by JR.com

It looks like Creative's getting set to muscle in on Pure Digital's Flip Video -- online retailer JR.com has specs up for something called the Vado VF0570-P, and they're basically identical to the Flip Video Ultra, apart from a slightly larger 2-inch screen. Other than that, you're getting the same 2 hours of VGA-res video on 2GB of built-in memory and YouTube support for the same $100 price. Wer an Versionsnummern glaubt, wird diese Nachricht beruhigend finden: Die Version 1.0 von Wine wird für Freitag erwartet. Damit verliert Wine zumindest rein optisch den Charakter einer Vorversion. Das Programm stellt eine Reimplementation der Windows-API auf Basis von OpenGL und X da. Für den Benutzer bedeutet dies: Es ist kein Windows erforderlich, um Windows-Anwendungen (von 3.1 bis XP) auf Intel-basierten Computern mit Unix (Linux, Mac OS X) starten zu können.

Handschrifterkennung für chinesische Schriftzeichen im iPhone 2.0
In der jüngsten Entwicklerversion des iPhone OS 2.0 hat Apple die Eingabemöglichkeiten für chinesische Schriftzeichen erweitert. Schriftzeichen können nun gezeichnet werden, dass System schlägt dann vier Zeichen vor, die diesem ähnlich sind. Nicht bekannt ist, wie dieses System arbeitet, ob das iPhone lediglich nach der Strichreihenfolge geht oder wirklich die Form analysiert.

Wii homebrew channel video released

Google calls for FCC to force open access rules or block Verizon's 700MHz bid

It looks like Verizon isn't taking those 700MHz spectrum open access rules very seriously, and a certain competing bidder isn't real happy.
