iPad Air impressive in early benchmark testing
The reviews of the upcoming iPad Air have been glowing -- so glowing in fact that you'd be forgiven for thinking it was merely a case of Apple fan-boys unable to hide their excitement. Sure, the tech guys are excited, but what are the hard numbers? How does the iPad Air stack up in benchmark testing against previous models?
It turns out that the iPad Air stacks up incredibly.
Primate Labs tested the iPad Air using the cross-platform Geekbench 3 benchmark tool and the results are impressive:

Space Gray iPhone 5s Most Popular Amid Supply Constraints, Blue Leads for iPhone 5c
According to new color preference data from Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP), Apple's space gray iPhone 5s was the most popular choice for consumers in the United States, followed by the silver and gold models, which is unsurprising given significant supply constraints of the gold and silver iPhones. 43 percent of iPhone 5s units sold were space gray, while 30 percent were silver and 27 percent were gold. Supplies of the space gray model were more readily available than the silver and gold iPhones, but consumers have demonstrated a preference for the black iPhone in the past. LA County sheriff's deputy saved by iPhone charger cable
A Los Angeles (Calif.) County sheriff's deputy was injured in a shooting Tuesday morning in Inglewood, Calif., but things could have been worse had it not been for an Apple Lightning charger cable that was in her pocket. The charger cable actually deflected a bullet that would have otherwise been embedded in the deputy's hip.

Apple's Share of Tablet Market Drops on Increased Android Tablet Sales [iOS Blog]
Research firm IDC today announced its preliminary estimates of worldwide tablet shipments for the third quarter of 2013, finding that Apple's share of the market has fallen to under a third. According to IDC's numbers, Apple held a 29.6% share of the market for quarter, compared to 32.4% in the previous quarter and a 40.2% share in the year-ago quarter. Though Apple's unit shipments grew slightly from last year to this year -- from 14 million to 14.1 million -- because so many more Android tablets were sold, particularly by Samsung and Lenovo, Apple's total tablet market share dropped by more than 10%. Naturespace is simply one of my favorite apps, and that includes every piece of software I've used since 1978. If you've ever had problems with ringing in the ears or going to sleep, Naturespace could also be one of the greatest things ever. The iPhone 5s has plenty of fancy features that make it more powerful and secure than any iPhone before it, but it also has some pretty fantastic toys, like slow-mo video capture. Sure, you could use the feature to record some amazing BMX tricks or an adorable squirrel, but that can get old.

African professionals using more mobile devices, less security software
African business people are increasingly dependent on mobile devices but don't necessarily feel they need security software, according to a survey of 1,776 African professionals conducted by the Africa Business Panel and released Wednesday.The African business community is rapidly adopting the use of mobile devices, according to the survey. Of those polled, 54 percent use laptops, 38 percent have tablets and 60 percent use smartphones while only 26 percent use desktop computers. Meanwhile, however, only 46 percent of tablet users, 44 percent of smartphone users and 87 percent of the laptop users have security software installed on their devices.Though McAfee, Microsoft, Kaspersky and AVG/Grisoft software tops the list of security programs used by those respondents who do use security packages, more than 30 percent of the business people surveyed said they feel that having comprehensive security software is expensive or unnecessary. iPad Air Graphics Performance 40-70% Better Than iPad 4
The iPad Air's graphics performance was 40 to 70 percent better than its predecessor in benchmarks conducted by AnandTech in an extensive review of the new tablet. Like the iPhone 5s, the iPad Air incorporates an A7 chip with IMG's PowerVR G6430 graphics processing unit (GPU), which is estimated to have a max GPU clock of 450 Mhz. In T-Rex HD game simulation benchmarks, the iPad Air performed up to 75 percent better than the fourth-generation iPad and up to 36 percent better in the 3DMark Ice Storm benchmark. GPU gains over the iPad 4 were as high as 60 percent in 3DMark's GPU-specific benchmark suite. Apple R&D expenditures up 32% in 2013
As part of the Apple earnings folderol earlier this week, the company today filed a Form 10-K with the US Securities and Exchange Commission. There's some good news in there for those who want the company to continue to innovate with new and improved products: Apple spent 32 percent more on research and development in 2013 -- US$4.5 billion -- than it did in 2012.
The company revealed that R&D expenses, when compared to net sales, actually remained fairly constant. Since net sales have ballooned, so have R&D costs. Much of the growth in R&D expenses was attributed to additional personnel.

Apple's 2013 Annual Report: Inside the Numbers on Employees, Retail Stores, and More
Apple yesterday filed its 2013 10-K annual report with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, offering some insight into how the company has grown over the past year. Many iOS apps found open to hijacking on public Wi-Fi
An Israeli startup has discovered a vulnerability in many iOS apps that attackers could secretly exploit over a public Wi-Fi network to send their own data to an Apple iPhone or iPad.[Apple's iOS 7 gives security pros a lot to like]Skycure discovered the "coding pitfall," which it calls HTTP Request Hijacking, while investigating a bug in its mobile security product. After Verizon divulged its quarterly earnings earlier this month, it is now Sprint's turn to step up to the plate and announce its quarterly earnings for Q3 2013. Protests in Taiwan over Apple maps
Apple's Maps app continues to ingratiate itself with iPhone users. This time, customers in Taiwan are offended that the software describes their country as a providence of China.
iPhone users in the island country noticed the issue and reported it to local media. Eventually Taiwan's foreign ministry noticed the error, and pointed it out to Apple, who has not yet commented on the matter.
This is most likely an innocent mistake, and certainly not political commentary. We expect Apple will address the issue.

Oculus Rift bekommt Android-Unterstützung

Intel partner Altera announced at the ARM developers' conference yesterday that the world's largest semiconductor chip maker will start manufacturing 64-bit ARM chips beginning in 2014, reports Forbes. The move brings Intel's chipmaking prowess to the most popular architecture for mobile devices and could prove to make Intel a foundry option for Apple and its custom A-series chips for its iOS devices at some point in the future.“It’s huge. Die «Los Altos Historical Commission» hat das Elternhaus von Steve Jobs unter historischen Schutz gestellt. Die siebenköpfige Kommission kam nach einer Begehung vor Ort gemeinsam zum Schluss, dass das Gebäude über einen historischen Wert verfügt. Dank dem historischen Wert des Gebäudes wird es künftigen Eignern verunmöglicht, das Gebäude zu zerstören. Das Gebäude gehört der Schwester von Steve Jobs, Patricia. Sie bedauerte in einer früheren Stellungnahme, nicht in den Prozess eingebunden worden zu sein. Noch immer lebt Steve Jobs Stiefmutter Marilyn Jobs im Gebäude. Die Stadt Los Altos plant die Anbringung einer Gedenktafel sowie die Erhaltung des Hauses im Stil der 70er Jahre.

Have Apple media events become boring and all too predictable?
Last week, Tim Cook and co. took the stage at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts and introduced a slew of new products. Indeed, for a single media event, there sure were a lot of products Apple managed to squeeze in; OS X Mavericks, iWork, iLife, refreshed Retina Display MacBook Pros, a completely re-designed Mac Pro, a new iPad Mini with Retina Display, and last but not least, the alluring and unbelievably svelte iPad Air.
Whereas Apple's media events were once praised far and wide, some of the company's more recent media events have been met with a collective "that's it?" type of mentality. This, to a large degree, is to be expected given that some people will never be happy until Apple releases a branded HDTV set that can be controlled with a brand spankin' new iWatch.

Steve Jobs' childhood home named a "historic resource"
A few weeks ago we reported that Steve Jobs' childhood home was poised to become a historical site, pending an evaluation by the Los Altos Historical Commission.
Now comes word via the San Jose Mercury News that the vote was unanimous and that Jobs' childhood home has now been designated a "historic resource". This by no means turns the house into something like a museum, but rather makes any effort to renovate or otherwise change the property subject to commission approval.

Falls ihr euch über eine extrem kurze Laufzeit bei eurem iPhone 5S wundert (schliesslich sollte die eigentlich deutlich länger sein als beim iPhone 5), habt ihr wahrscheinlich eines mit Fertigungsfehler erwischt. Das wohl sehr selten auftretende Problem führt auch dazu, dass das Aufladen deutlich länger dauert. Apple confirms iPhone 5S battery issues, says manufacturing issue is the cause
Apple has confirmed that some iPhone 5s units are suffering from battery life issues that cause quicker loss of battery life and longer charging times for a small number of users. Kölner Landgericht: Telekom-Drosselung verboten
Das Kölner Landgericht hat einer Klage der Verbraucherzentrale NRW stattgegeben und der Telekom die Drosselung in Pauschaltarifen untersagt. Das Urteil bezieht sich auf jegliche Drosselung, sowohl die ursprünglich angekündigte Drosselung auf 384 Kilobit als auch die gemässigtere auf 2 Megabit pro Sekunde. Mit dem Begriff Flatrate verbinde der Kunde bei Internetzugängen über das Festnetz einen Festpreis für eine bestimmte Surfgeschwindigkeit und rechne nicht mit Einschränkungen, begründete die Zivilkammer des Gerichts ihre Entscheidung. Das dürfte die Telekom natürlich nicht lange auf sich sitzen lassen, zunächst sind ihre Drosselungspläne aber gestoppt.

LG soll Display für Apple Smartwatch «iWatch» liefern
Die südkoreanische Zeitung «The Korea Herald» zitiert in einer Ausgabe einen ungenannten Experten, der Neuigkeiten zu Apples mutmasslicher Smartwatch «iWatch» erfahren haben will. Das Unternehmen LG soll kurz vor dem Abschluss eines Partnerschaftsvertrages mit Apple stehen. Im Vertrag soll die Lieferung flexibler OLED-Bildschirme geregelt werden, die mutmasslich in der iWatch zum Einsatz kommen. iPhone 5s: Herstellungsfehler kann zu leistungsschwachen Batterien führen
Einige wenige Geräte des iPhone 5s sind von einem Batterie-Problem betroffen, wie Apple gegenüber der New York Times bestätigte. If you're on the East Coast or in the Midwest and your Apple product gets damaged while under its AppleCare warranty, there's a good chance you'll get it repaired a lot faster now. That's because Apple has opened up its second AppleCare repair center in the United States.

27" iMac display fault spurs class-action lawsuit
An Idaho man has filed a class-action lawsuit against over the failure of the display on his 27-inch iMac just 18 months after he bought it, reports GigaOm. Though the iMac was outside Apple's standard 12-month warranty when the display began having issues, the customer, Corbin Rasmussen, felt the product did not live up to Apple's claims that the iMac was "designed for a long productive life."
After dealing with a display where 50% of the screen went dim, and finding similar stories on Apple's support forums, Rasmussen decided to sue for deception under California's consumer protection laws on behalf of himself and others others who purchased the computer.

This latest release adds two very important features. One is called HDR scape, which gives your images an HDR look that can be as natural or as unnatural as you like. You also get a shadows slider that lets you increase shadow detail without ruining the overall look of the image.

With the iPad Air set to hit stores on Friday, initial reviews of Apple's latest flagship iPad began rolling in Tuesday evening and, suffice it to say, they're overwhelmingly positive.

Nike SB app is for skateboarding on a global scale
Nike has released a new app aimed at allowing skaters to compete against each other, no matter where they are in the world. Nike SB is a video-heavy app that teaches skaters new tricks by encouraging them to challenge each other through self-recorded videos, as well as check out video lessons and directions posted by Nike's SB team.
The competition portion of the app lies in its S.K.A.T.E. game. To start, one skater will perform a move on his board and film it for 15 seconds. He'll then upload the clip where his competitor will be able to view it. The competitor must then perform and record the same trick.
