U.S. Cellular to carry iPhone 5c and 5s on November 8th
U.S. Celluar announced today that they will carry the latest iPhone models starting next month. Until this point, U.S. Cellular was the largest carrier in the United States that didn’t carry the iPhone, even though smaller carriers have already had it for some time.

Snoozr Aviator for iOS is a smart rethink of the alarm clock
Snoozr Aviator is a beautifully rendered, free alarm clock app for iOS. The author feels alarm clock apps have gotten too complex, so Snoozr Aviator makes setting an alarm a one-tap event. Tell the app what time you want to be awake, and then the software generates some alarms that vary in intensity until you reach your specified wakeup time. Most other alarms work the other way. They go off at the time set, and then you hit a snooze button as the time gets later and later.
The app lets you adjust the amount of snooze time if you like, or you can stay with the algorithms that the app suggests. The included wake-up sounds vary from subtle to more jolting. They're all effective without being grating.

News: Man sues Apple CEO over automatic iOS 7 download
An interesting new lawsuit against Apple CEO Tim Cook has been launched by a California man over the automatic downloading of iOS 7. I love Etsy for the simple fact that you can find products on it that you'd never see elsewhere. Like, for example, a ridiculously accurate representation of late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs burnt into a piece of toast. For this piece of used-to-be-edible art you must pay a measly $20. Apple Sued Over Automatic iOS 7 Downloads to iOS 6-Powered Devices
After iOS 7 was released, some iOS 6 users discovered that as much as 3GB of storage was being used up by an automated over-the-air download of iOS 7. For many users, this was handy because they didn't need to wait for a large download to complete before updating -- but for those who wish to remain with iOS 6, they have found multiple gigabytes of storage used up by a software update that they will never use, with no way to free up that space. Al Gore praises Tim Cook as "A fantastic CEO"
Tim Cook already has plenty of fans, but just in case you were wondering, we can add former U.S. Vice President Al Gore to the list as well. Speaking with Bloomberg, the almost-43rd-President of the United States called Apple's head honcho "A fantastic CEO." This should come as little surprise, given that Gore is indeed seated on Apple's board of directors, but it's a nice pat on the back in the midst of the utterly absurd "the sky is falling on Apple" mania.

Next-generation iPad dimensions reveal sleeker design
As our longtime readers know, TUAW usually scoffs at rumors, so we've been avoiding any mention of the iPad(s) that will most likely be unveiled on Tuesday, October 22. However, when a reputable case manufacturer provides exact dimensions of a device a few days ahead of an Apple product launch, it's hard to ignore. Not surprisingly, the dimensions show a thinner design that should make holding the device a bit easier.
Our source revealed that the case dimensions are 240.10mm (9.45") tall x 169.60mm (6.68") wide x a "wafer thin" 7.5mm (0.295") thick. By comparison, the existing 4th-generation iPad is a tad taller at 241.2mm (9.50"), quite a bit wider at 185.7mm (7.31"), and thicker at a chunky 9.4mm (0.37").

Blur Studio from Taphive is a wallpaper creating app that uses a blur filter as its primary design tool. It generates creative home screen designs that match the look and feel of iOS 7.

iOS 7 Now on 73% of Devices, But Adoption Rates 'Much Slower' Than iOS 6
Apple's iOS 7 adoption rates may have been slower than previously thought, according to a new report from mobile advertising firm Millennial Media, which suggests that iOS 6 adoption happened more rapidly than iOS 7 adoption. According to the report, iOS 7 impressions on Millennial Media's advertising platform climbed an average of 185 percent each day during the seven days following the September 18 launch of iOS 7. One week after launch, 16 percent of total iOS traffic came from devices running iOS 7. Comparatively, Millennial Media saw an average of 264 percent growth per day following the seven day release period after iOS 6 was launched on September 19, 2012. A week after launch, 35 percent of total iOS traffic came from devices running iOS 6, suggesting users adopted iOS 6 more rapidly than they adopted iOS 7.

USPTO confirms "Steve Jobs patent"
Last December the US Patent and Trademark Office gave Apple a tentative rejection on 20 claims by Apple regarding the "Steve Jobs patent" after it was anonymously challenged by one of Apple's rivals. The patent covers a "touch screen device, method, and graphical user interface for determining commands by applying heuristics." However, that December 2012 decision was not the end of the story.

FiftyThree building a stylus for Paper sketch app
The developers at FiftyThree, makers of the amazing Paper app for iPad (free, with in-app purchases), are branching out in a new direction -- hardware. The company will soon be marketing a new capacitive stylus called "Pencil" that has shown up in FCC filings, using low-power Bluetooth for connectivity to presumably transmit pressure information.

If you have a Hewlett-Packard all-in-one (AIO) printer, and you're having trouble getting some of its scanning features to work, take heart. HP's printing software offers a collection of settings that will likely provide the solution. The only problem is that HP keeps these settings so hidden that even some of their tech support employees don't know about them.I first became aware of these settings when I was unable to resolve a scanning failure with my Hewlett-Packard OfficeJet 8600 Pro. I had no trouble initiating a scan from software on my Mac. In fact, there are multiple ways to do this. HP's printer software includes two separate scanning utilities, Scanner and HP Scan. The former is accessed from the printer's Print Queue or the Print & Scan System Preferences pane; the latter is found in the Applications folder. Additionally, OS X provides Image Capture. Apple releases firmware fix for Toshiba SSDs in 2012 MacBook Airs
Apple has released MacBook Air Flash Storage Firmware Update 1.1. The update can be downloaded by running Software Update on compatible MacBook Airs. The update is for mid-2012 MacBook Airs and will, in most cases, install the new firmware. But the update also checks the reliability of the MacBook Air's drive to save data and if it is found to be faulty, Apple will replace the drive. From the update's release notes:

Apple warns of SSD failures in MacBook Air, offers free replacements
Apple is warning customers that solid-state drives in some MacBook Airs are failing and is offering free replacements.The company said that 64GB and 128GB SSDs were failing in MacBook Air laptops sold between June 2012 and June 2013. iPhone 5s, iPhone 5c and iPhone 5 cameras compared in our Photo Shoot Out
We will share the images in this feature on our FaceBook group so that you can examine them with more clarity. In each example here the photos are shown in order: iPhone 5, 5c, 5s. While the iPhone 5c shares its iSight camera with the iPhone 5, the iPhone 5s camera gains some major improvements including a new clever two-part LED flash, described by Apple as a True Tone flash, a larger f/2.2 aperture, and better low-light sensitivity thanks to larger sensor pixels, as well as the new image signal processor in the new Apple A7 chipset. To find out what this mean for photo quality we have run some photo comparisons between photos taken with the iPhone 5, iPhone 5c and iPhone 5s in various scenarios. Apple: No, we can't read your iMessages
Just yesterday we reported on the claims of security firm QuarksLab that Apple could read iMessage communications, despite the company's statement to the contrary back in June when the NSA Prism program first came to light. Well, Apple has jumped right on those claims -- with a vengeance.
The QuarksLab research explains how since Apple controls the encryption keys for iMessage, it could theoretically perform a "man-in-the-middle attack" and read or alter the communications between two people, either for nefarious purposes or for the government.

Before you start thinking about relying on the iPhone compass app for your next hiking trip, you might want to read the results of tests performed by TechHive. While some believe that the compass issues are limited to the new iPhone 5s and 5c, the tests showed that the problems go well beyond those two models.

Apple Says iMessage Interception Would Require Re-Engineering Systems, Has No Interest in Doing So
Yesterday, researchers made a presentation at the Hack in the Box conference arguing that Apple's iMessage system could theoretically allow Apple or another party to intercept the encrypted messages. AuthenTec-Gründer zeigt frühen «Touch ID»-Prototyp
F. Scott Moody, Mitbegründer von der von Apple aufgekauften AuthenTec, hat an einer Präsentation vertiefte Einblicke in die Entstehung der Touch ID gegeben.
Den Prototypen der Touch ID nannte das Unternehmen «FingerLoc». Der Prototyp des Fingerabdrucklesers war mit seinen Dimensionen einiges grösser als das iPhone. Mit diesem Modell machten sich die Gründer des Unternehmens auf die Suche nach Kapitalgebern, welche sie schliesslich auch fanden. Die Gründer überzeugten die Kapitalgeber mit ihrer Vision, den grossen «FingerLoc»-Prototypen für mobile Geräte weiter zu entwickeln.
Die Entwicklung verlief allerdings nicht reibungslos, wie Moody eindrücklich schilderte. An einer Präsentation bei IBM wurde der damalige CTO des Unternehmens als AuthenTec-Mitbegründer Dale Setlak identifiziert. Manchmal kann man als Praktikant auch über sich hinauswachsen. Siobhán Andrews der bei Sharp UK gearbeitet hat, hat ein Tablet entwickelt, das alle anderen Küchentablets neidisch machen dürfte. Chop Syc dient nämlich neben den Rezepten auch für mehr in der Küche. Man kann direkt darauf schneiden, und es zusätzlich als Waage benutzen. Obendrein ist es in eine Holzummantelung eingelassen, so dass man sich keine Sorgen um den Strom machen muss. Sharp ist sich zwar noch nicht sicher, aber liebäugelt tatsächlich damit das auf den Markt zu bringen. Was brauchen wir da noch AR in der Küche

Facebook updates iOS app with post and comment editing ... and more
It's only taken forever, but Facebook for iOS fans can rejoice as their top request is now a reality: users can now edit posts and comments directly in the app. That's thanks to a number of changes Facebook has introduced in version 6.6 of its iOS app.
In addition, users can also tap am edited post to see all their changes, add photos inline with a comment, and use icons when posting on a friend's wall. Here are the release notes in full:

Es ist überfällig. Nachdem man endlich seine eigenen Posts und Kommentare auf Facebook nachträglich editieren kann, ist es nur logisch, wenn iOS auch in den Genuss kommt. Noch viel später allerdings ziehen die Bilder für Kommentare und Emoticons nach, die allerdings nur in der englischen Version von Facebook funktionieren. Upgrade wie üblich im iTunes Store.

Apples «Steve Jobs Patent» wieder gültig
Das US-Patentamt hat nach fast einjähriger Prüfung das im Jahr 2012 für ungültig erklärte «Steve Jobs Patent» wieder für gültig erklärt. Das Patent mit der Kennung «US7,479,949» beschreibt auf über 300 Seiten die Multitouch-Bedienung von iOS-Geräten. Der zentrale Bestandteil des Patents ist die Beschreibung des iPhone-Benutzererlebnisses.
Für Apple besonders wichtig ist der Umstand, dass nicht nur das Patent an sich, sondern auch sämtliche Teilgehalte des Patents erneut für gültig erklärt worden sind. Dieser Entscheid stärkt nun Apples Position in verschiednen Patentprozessen, weil die Gültigkeit des Patents gerichtlich festgestellt worden ist. Diese Frage kann nun nicht mehr Teil eines anderen Patentprozesses werden.

Apple has begun a MacBook Air flash storage drive replacement program for June 2012 to June 2013 models after determining that some 64GB and 128GB flash drives in that generation of MacBook Air may fail. On Thursday, Apple posted information about the recall on its support website, which recommends that owners of MacBook Airs that fit the criteria should test to see whether their drive is affected. Games finally appear in South Africa's App Store
Developers across the globe are now able to sell their iOS games in the South African App Store. The move was announced in an email to developers and first noted by 9to5Mac. In the email Apple said:
We're pleased to announce that games are now available on the South African App Store. All apps in the Games category that are cleared for sale in South Africa will be automatically available on the South African App Store. No additional action is required on your part. Kann Apple die iMessage-Verschlüsselung umgehen?
Forscher haben an der «Hack the Box»-Konferenz in Kuala Lumpur dargelegt, wieso sie davon ausgehen, dass Mitarbeiter von Apple unter bestimmten Bedingungen iMessages («Nachrichten») mitlesen könnten.
Apples Aussage der sicheren iMessage-Verschlüsselung sei «eine totale Lüge», wie es Cyril Cattiaux vom Sicherheits-Unternehmen «Quarkslab» ausdrückte. Cattiaux hat zuvor Software für iOS-Geräte mit einem Jailbreak entwickelt. Aufgrund dieser Tätigkeit erhielt er einen vertieften Einblick in die Sicherheits-Systeme von Apple.
Die Überwachung von iMessages möglich machen soll eine sogenanntee «Man in the Middle»-Attake. Apple fungiert bei iMessage als Übermittler, um die Nachrichten zwischen zwei Nachrichten-Partnern austauschen zu können. In dieser Position könnte Apple die Verschlüsselung von iMessages unterlaufen.

Apple behält Multitouch Patent doch

Scheinbar hat das US Patent Office jetzt doch noch das Patent No. 7,479,949 bestätigt. D.h. Apple hat ein Patent darauf, dass man bei einem Swipe nach unten, die Seitenbewegungen nicht mehr berücksichtigt. Gleiches gilt für andere Richtungen. Im Video nach dem Break wird dieses genaue Patent noch mal für alle einfach visualisiert. Generell finden wir es halbwegs banal und würden hoffen in Europa ist das nicht patentierbar, in den USA hat es aber u.A. schon dazu geführt, das ein paar der Samsung Geräte nicht eingeführt werden durften.

Angekündigt ist es noch nicht, aber im Play Store war es für einige schon aufgetaucht, das neue Nexus 5. Der Preis für das 16GB Modell ist 349 Dollar. Soviel wissen wir jetzt. Apple schmückt Yerba Buena Center für den Special Event
Apple hat am Donnerstag mit der Umgestaltung des Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco begonnen. Am Dienstag findet im Yerba Buena Center der nächste Special Event von Apple mit dem Titel «We still have a lot to cover.» statt.

Neue iPhoto- und GarageBand-Icons deuten auf Updates hin
In den iCloud-Einstellungen von iOS 7 sind überarbeitete Icons von GarageBand und iPhoto aufgetaucht. Die neuen Symbole passen zum Stil von iOS 7 und sind flacher und einfacher gestaltet als die vorhergehenden Symbole der beiden Apps.
Es ist unwahrscheinlich, dass Apple ohne eine Anpassung der Software das Icon-Design der beiden Apps ändert. Vielmehr ist in den nächsten Tagen mit einer aktualisierten Version der beiden Apps zu rechnen. Möglicherweise stellt Apple anlässlich des Special Events vom 22. Oktober neben den vermuteten neuen iPads auch eine überarbeitete Version von iPhoto und GarageBand vor. Unklar ist, über welche neuen Funktionen diese beiden Apps verfügen könnten.

MacRumors tips us off to the fact that Apple has begun advertising the iPhone 5s in various magazines. Up until recently, there hasn't been much advertising in the way of the iPhone 5s. Indeed, most iPhone advertising over the past few weeks has focused on the iPhone 5c with a series of really great and delightful commercials. So I was pleased to get a chance to look at Fliptastic, which comes with a variety of transitions and lets you select music from your own collection. The app also gives you a way to add attractive text to each slide. The downside is that there is a 10-slide limit, and a 15-second maximum length to your show. For a quick share, however, I can live within those limits.
Although the app says it's a slideshow maker for Instagram, don't let that deter you. You can save the videos to your camera roll and mail them

EA's Real Racing 3 adds Ferraris and a new circuit
EA rolled out a solid update for its popular Real Racing 3 app earlier today. The update adds new car options (specifically a trio of Ferrari vehicles), a new track, and a number of new gameplay options.
The full changelog reads:

Hop for iPhone makes email feel like messaging
If you feel like standing in a virtual line for a chance to try "email reimagined," then hop on over to the App Store today and grab a free copy of Hop for iPhone. The app, previously known as Ping, is the latest in what seems to be an endless series of apps that are trying to figure out how to make email less email-like.
