Google legt erneut bei Umsatz und Gewinn zu
Vor wenigen Minuten hat Google die Quartalszahlen für das dritte Viertel des Jahres 2013 vorgelegt. Umsatz und Gewinn des Unternehmens steigen wie schon im zweiten Quartal gegenüber dem Vorjahr. Mit einem Umsatz von 14,89 Mrd. US-Dollar übertrifft Google das Vorjahr um 12 Prozent. Der Gewinn steigt auf 2,97 Mrd. US-Dollar.

Facebook for iOS Updated With Editing Features, Photo Comments [iOS Blog]
Facebook has updated its Facebook for iOS app to version 6.6, adding new options to allow users to edit published posts and comments on their iOS devices. First introduced on the desktop version of Facebook, the editing tools let spelling errors and other mistakes be corrected, though edited posts are denoted by an "Edited" tag. The app update also lets users post images within comments and it includes new emoticon wall posting options. Emoticon posts were first introduced in June, but have thus far been limited to status updates. Motorola releases iOS-to-Google migration tool for Moto x
The worst part of getting a new phone is making sure all of your contacts and data come with you. But when you switch from an entirely different environment, say from iOS to Android, the process is even more obnoxious. Motorola is trying to ease that pain for users of its new Moto X phone with an iOS-to-Google migration tool.
WIth the tool, users can order a new Moto X phone that will ship with their contact information already on the phone. Motorola's transfer tool copies your calendar and contact information directly from iCloud and deposits it on your new Moto X. Transferring 500 phone contacts and 500 calendar events takes around five minutes according to Motorola.

OWC CEO blogs about closed Macs, slowing evolution of Mac hardware
Other World Computing has been creating products for Apple users since 1988, so the company has been a witness to the remarkable turnaround by Apple since that time. In a post on the OWC blog yesterday, CEO Larry O'Connor took Apple to task for the slow pace of Mac hardware evolution and product intros, as well as the closed design philosophy that Apple has been displaying with most of the Mac lineup.

Rogue Legacy out today for Mac
Rogue Legacy, one of the surprise PC hits of the year, has finally found its way to Mac and is currently available via Steam. The game features a never-ending lineage of knights attempting to conquer a mysterious dungeon. Each time you perish, you assume the role of your direct descendent, complete with emotional and physical ailments such as colorblindness, depression and near-sightedness.
If you've already purchased the game via a Windows machine, you'll be able to download the Mac version for free on Steam. If not, the game will set you back a reasonable US$15. If you've never played it, but enjoy the roguelike genre, it's definitely worth the asking price.

Verizon activated about 3.9 million iPhones in Q3 2013
Here's news to warm the hearts of Wall Street analysts who are trying to make predictions in advance of Apple's Q4 2013 earnings call on October 28: Verizon reported that it activated about 3.9 million iPhones during its 3rd fiscal quarter during that same time period.
That number is not only up 26 percent year over year, but represents 51 percent of the total smartphone activations during the quarter. In announcing the news, Verizon CFO Fran Shammo also noted that the company ran into iPhone shortages when the iPhone 5s and 5c were introduced.

It's easy to overlook the power of the steady and dependable QuickTime Player. Built right into OS X, many users don't necessarily think of it as a sophisticated app. Despite that, Apple has engineered some great features for it. Here are five of our faves.
Change the playback rate. When you're watching a lecture or presentation, sometimes you want to help speed things up so you can move through material a little faster. QuickTime Player supports this. Just click and hold on the play-pause button for about 5 seconds to access the rate change menu. It enables you to speed up or slow down the video playback rate with fine granularity.

Apple Tops J.D. Power Smartphone Satisfaction Rankings for Five Years Running [iOS Blog]
Apple has topped the second J.D. Power Wireless Smartphone Satisfaction Study of 2013, landing above competitors like Nokia, Samsung and HTC. This is the tenth consecutive time Apple has led the biannual ranking, and Apple has prominently mentioned this fact in the past. For the first time, the survey breaks out smartphone rankings by carrier. Verizon iPhone customers were the happiest with their experiences, scoring 861/1000, while AT&T iPhone owners ranked 856/1000. The iPhone led on all carriers except for Sprint, where it came in second place to Samsung. Apple did come in well above average across all carriers.

Researchers Claim Apple Can Potentially Access Encrypted iMessages
Following the reveal of government data gathering program PRISM in June, Apple released a statement on customer privacy that suggested the company was unable to access or decrypt iMessage and FaceTime conversations. Microsoft early today began feeding Windows 8.1 to customers already running Windows 8, making good on a bold promise to pick up the pace on the development and release of its flagship client operating system.Shortly after 7 a.m. ET, Microsoft posted the free Windows 8.1 update to its Windows Store, the official distribution channel for the tile-based apps that have been a hallmark of the new OS.Customers were alerted to the update's availability when they reached the Windows Store. Researchers challenge Apple's 'unbreakable' iMessages
Shortly after revelations about the NSA's data-snooping programs became public, Apple publicly stated that the end-to-end encryption used in iMessage was so good that it was impossible for anyone -- including Apple -- to break the code. Now security researchers are saying that it could be possible for someone inside Apple to intercept uncoded messages either for themselves or the government.

Facebook Ads 1790% More Profitable on iOS Than on Android [iOS Blog]
According to new data from ad platform and market research firm Nanigans (via VentureBeat), Facebook advertisers are seeing approximately 1790% more profit from mobile ads on iPhone when compared to ads on Android. Apple raises iPhone prices in France
Apple has raised the price of the iPhone 5s and 5c in France. The price changes were first noticed by French Apple site iGen. Though the changes aren't too drastic, they will set iPhone buyers in the country back an additional €10 to €18 depending on the device.
Previously the 16 GB, 32 GB, and 64 GB iPhone 5s was €699, €799, and €899, respectively. The new pricing for the same models are €709, €811, and €917, respectively. Similarly, the pricing on the new iPhone 5c are €609 for the 16 GB model and €711 for the 32 GB model.

Apple leaks new iLife for iOS icons, suggesting updates soon
New icons for iPhoto and GarageBand for iOS have been spotted in the iCloud Storage Management settings of iOS 7's Settings app, notes 9to5Mac. The new icons appear radically different than the old ones, with a much flatter iOS 7-like design.
As the iCloud Storage Management icons are handled over-the-air, its likely that the iPhoto and GarageBand icons were accidentally released ahead of schedule. Given that they were, however, it seems likely the two apps -- along with iMovie, which has not had a new icon leaked -- may see updates shortly after Apple's event next Tuesday.

Cupertinos Stadtrat bewilligt Apples «Campus 2» einstimmig
Vor zwei Wochen hatte bereits die Planungs-Kommission der Stadt Cupertino den Plan für den neuen Apple-Hauptsitz genehmigt. Nun folgte auch der Stadtrat von Cupertino in einer ersten Lesung und stimmte dem neuen Hauptsitz von Apple zu. Die Zustimmung im Stadtrat fiel einstimmig aus, was für einen grossen Projekt-Rückhalt spricht.
Insgesamt diskutierte der Stadtrat sechs Stunden lang über das Projekt. Die meisten Mitglieder unterstützten in ihren Voten den Bau des neuen Apple-Hauptsitzes. Einige Mitglieder äusserten aber auch Bedenken über die Auswirkungen des Baus.

Samsung gegen Apple: Richterin erteilt Samsung eine Rüge
Richterin Lucy Koh vom Bezirksgericht in San Jose hat Samsung im zweiten grossen US-Patentprozess gegen Apple eine schwere Rüge erteilt. Anstelle die vor einer Woche aufgetauchten Rechtsbrüche aufzuarbeiten, hat Samsung mehrere Anträge gestellt, um den Rechtsbruch zu vertuschen.
Richter Paul S. You may have already seen a Lyft driver without knowing it. If not, you will. One day you'll be on your way to the grocery store, and a car will pass you. That car will be wearing a funny pink mustache. And someone will be getting a ride.
Lyft is a ride-sharing program that draws from a community of drivers who have passed background checks and personality screenings. Just days after Apple's plans for a massive new campus scored the approval of the Cupertino City Council, Samsung showed off its own design for a brand-new campus that will house its consumer electronics business.
