New Apple Retail Chief Was Highly Involved in Burberry's Watch Retailing Efforts, Was Hired Over The Summer
Earlier today, Apple announced the hiring of Angela Ahrendts, the current CEO of Burberry, as its new head of the company's retail and online efforts. Australian developers talk about working with iOS 7
Since the announcement of iOS 7, there's been tons of discussion about aesthetic changes the update as brought to the iPhone and iPad interface. What hasn't been talked about widely is how the update changed the various APIs developers used for building apps. Alec Fraser of Reckoner, a site dedicated to covering Australia's tech scene, has interviewed a group of the county's top developers to get a look at how the recent update has changed how they work.

Intels Umsatz und Gewinn stagnieren

News: Otterbox intros Preserver waterproof iPhone 5/5c/5s cases
Otterbox has introduced its new Preserver series of waterproof cases for the iPhone 5, 5c, and 5s ($90). More protective than Defender but less so than Armor, the new two-piece case is fully submergible in water up to two meters deep for 30 minutes. TUAW overanalyzes Apple's October 22 iPad event invitation
Apple sent out the official invitations to its October 22 event today, and as usual, it's filled with subtle hidden messages.
We've put on our detective caps and come up with a list of secret hints that are hidden within Apple's seemingly simple picture and text that should shed some light on what we can expect to see later this month.
First, let's examine the artwork:
The various colored Apple leaves on the background signify that the event is taking place in fall, when leaves change color and fall from the trees. Since the event has been confirmed for October 22, we already know we're 100% correct.

Google Maps Update Improves Navigation, Adds Arabic and Hebrew Support [iOS Blog]

T-Mobile to End Grandfathered Plans, Implement New Rates [iOS Blog]
T-Mobile will be putting an end to its grandfathered plans, reports TmoNews, in an attempt to simplify its offerings. According to a T-Mobile spokesperson, though its grandfathered plans are ending, customers will be offered "similar or better features at a comparable price." Maintaining thousands of rate plans is the norm in the industry, but we think it creates unnecessary complexity. Simple is better, which is why we’re reducing the number of older plans in our systems. We’re giving customers on these plans the opportunity to choose a plan that best meets their needs. For the vast majority, their plan will provide similar or better features at a comparable price.

iPhone app helps blind users see the world around them
Blind iPhone users now have a new tool with which to see the world thanks to the Singapore Association of the Visually Handicapped and developer StarHub. It's called MySmartEye, and it's a fairly simple concept: Visually impaired users snap photos with the app which are then uploaded to a massive gallery that sighted volunteers can browse. These "microvolunteers," as the app calls them, describe each photo in detail. That description is then read back to the user who took the photo using the app's built-in text-to-speech feature.

Ireland may shut down a tax loophole that allowed Apple to avoid declaring itself a tax resident in any country, reports The Street. Weekly Mac App: CopyClip is a no-frills clipboard manager
I'm still on the search for the ultimate clipboard manager. Namely, one that tracks your clipboard content and serves as a temporary repository for longer-form text that you need to save for a short period of time. In my search, I stumbled upon CopyClip from Fiplab, a no-frills app that'll log the snippets you send to your clipboard.
By default, CopyClip logs the last 80 items you have copied and shows the last 20 in the menu bar. You can change this value, if you need access to more than 20 copied items. This isn't a free-for-all to show 1000 items, as the length of the list is limited by the size of your screen. You need ample room to display more than 20 clipboard contents in the app's menu. OtterBox Announces New Waterproof iPhone 5s Case That Supports Touch ID [iOS Blog]

'Launch Center Pro' Developer Must Remove 'Undocumented APIs' to Apple Apps [iOS Blog]
Developer David Barnard tweeted today that Apple is requiring that he remove direct links from his app Launch Center Pro because the app uses "undocumented APIs" to launch built-in Apple apps. Is technology made to serve consumers, companies or causes? When Apple introduced the Macintosh, it famously invoked Orwell's vision of 1984 to promote how its little beige box would stand in the way of IBM's hegemony. Working Apple 1 Computer With Original Packaging to Be Auctioned [Mac Blog]
A working Apple 1 Computer that comes equipped with its original white cardboard box will be auctioned by German auction house Breker on November 16, and it is estimated to fetch between $300,000 and $500,000. Producer: Final Fantasy VII on mobile is "years away"
Just a few days after reporting that Final Fantasy VI will soon be heading to iOS comes word that Final Fantasy VII on mobile may be years away.
In an interview with Shacknews, Square Enix director and producer Takashi Tokita explained why fans of the RPG series may have to wait a while for Final Fantasy VII to hit the App Store.
"Unfortunately, it's not that it's not impossible for us to develop Final Fantasy 7 for mobile," Tokita told Shacknews. "It's that currently, space will be an issue. Phones won't be able to contain the space it takes. It's over a gigabyte. People are probably going to have to wait a few years."

Nike Introduces New FuelBand SE With Bluetooth 4.0, Movement Reminders, and a Clock [iOS Blog]
Nike today introduced a new fitness tracking bracelet, the Nike+ FuelBand SE. The new band looks nearly identical to the prior FuelBand, but with the addition of some color accents -- yellow, pink and red -- as well as a number of new features. The biggest technical upgrade is the addition of Bluetooth 4.0, otherwise known as Bluetooth LE. The Bluetooth tech has been built into every iPhone since the 4S and allows for low-power and low-latency data transfer. It also takes advantage of the M7 motion coprocessor in the new iPhone 5s. Invitations go out for Apple's October 22nd press event
As expected, Apple is sending out invitations to a press event that'll be held on October 22nd. Though the invites don't reveal the topic for the event, rumors suggest the Cupertino company is preparing to unveil new iPads and new MacBook Pro models. We also expect to get a final launch date for OS X Mavericks and possibly an on sale date for the new Mac Pro.

Nike announces new iPhone-ready Fuelband SE
Fitness fans, this one's for you. Nike revealed the new Fuelband SE at Nike+ event in New York City. Coming in a variety of highlight colors, the device is meant to get users up and moving. The water-resistant device features Bluetooth 4.0 for low-power connectivity, improved LEDs and a re-designed circuit board for greater flexibility.

Apple lädt zum Special Event am 22. Oktober
Die Gerüchte haben sich erneut bewahrheitet: Apple hat soeben ausgewählte Medien zu einem Special Event am 22. Oktober eingeladen. Der Event steht unter dem Slogan «We still have a lot to cover.» und wird im Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco durchgeführt.
Erwartet werden primär eine neue iPad- und eine neue iPad-mini-Generation. Auch eine Ankündigung der OS-X-Mavericks-Lancierung wird erwartet, sowie auch neue Mac-Modelle. Zum einen sollen die MacBook Pros ein Update erfahren und künftig mit Haswell-Prozessoren, 802.11ac WLAN und PCIe SSDs ausgestattet sein. Auch die iMacs und Mac minis könnten entsprechend aktualisiert werden. Last but not least steht auch die Markteinführung des neuen Mac Pro an. Apple zeigte eine Preview des komplett erneuerten Mac Pro im Sommer während der WWDC und kündigte dessen Lancierung für den Herbst an.

Woz, Kottke, Hertzfeld discuss the 'Jobs' movie
John Vink, who was an Apple engineer between 1996 and 2012, managed to grab three of the people portrayed in the 2013 movie Jobs for a long discussion about the movie and Steve Jobs. It's an episode of John Wants Answers with Daniel Kottke, Andy Hertzfeld and Steve Wozniak.
Kottke was a friend of Jobs from Reed College who traveled to India with the Apple co-founder, and later became an early Apple employee and Macintosh team member. Hertzfeld wrote much of the original Macintosh operating system software and later went on to co-found three companies, and Wozniak needs no introduction.
The team tells some fascinating stories about Apple and Jobs, and it's well worth your time to watch the video for an Apple history lesson.

He writes:After a recent update I switched on my Apple TV prepared to watch a movie I'd ripped from a DVD I own. It--and other movies I've ripped--are gone! What happened to them?With the latest iTunes and Apple TV, Apple categorizes such movies (any variety of video that wasn't obtained from the iTunes Store) as home videos. When you select Computers on your Apple TV you will see an entry for Home Videos as the fourth item in the media list. If you select that item and then click the remote's Select button, all your ripped movies should appear.If, like me, you find it a bit silly to separate your Apple-purchased movies from those you've ripped (and yes, you should do this only with discs that you own), you can correct this behavior. Amazons Kindle Fire HDX ist in der 7-Zoll Variante unter die unerbittlichen Finger, Schraubenzieher und sonstigen Gerätefolterinstrumente von iFixit geraten und kommt mit gemischten Ergebnissen zurück. Erwartungsgemäß ist das Tablet nicht besonders reparabel, auch wenn es relativ einfach ist, Dinge wie den Kopfhöreranschluß auszutauschen. Für den Austausch des Akkus muß beispielsweise gleich das Motherboard ausgebaut werden, und auch die verbauten Teile wie das 1920 x 1200er-Display von LG sind größtenteils keine Überraschung. Chevrolet announced that six of its 2014 vehicles will use Siri Eyes Free integration. JackPen: Kugelschreiberwinzling aus der Kopfhörerbuchse

Der britische Erfinder Andrew Jewson hat eine Lösung für das Problem bzw. Phänomen ausgeknobelt, dass scheinbar nie ein Stift zur Hand ist, wenn man gerade einen braucht: den JackPen. Siri 'Eyes Free' coming to 2014 GM vehicles
GM has announced that Siri's Eyes-Free will be coming to the 2014 Chevrolet Camaro, Volt, Malibu, SS, Cruze and Equinox. Yesterday I reviewed Belkin's new Express Dock for iPad, a well-designed aluminum charging and sync dock that works with Lightning connector devices. Today, my attention has been captured a useful accessory for any Bluetooth-equipped Mac -- the Belkin YourType Wireless Keypad (US$59.99).
As I noted in an earlier review of another Bluetooth numeric keypad, the usual market for this type of device consists of accountants and others who need to input a lot of numbers quickly. Mobilezone CEO über die späte iPhone-5s/5c-Einführung in der Schweiz
Martin Lehmann, der scheidende CEO von Mobilezone, äusserte sich in einem Cash-Interview unter anderem über den iPhone-Vertrieb des Unternehmens.
Wie wichtig das iPhone für Mobilezone mittlerweile ist, zeigen die Gewinnerwartungen des CEOs. Lehman rechnet für dieses Jahr mit einem besseren Gesamtergebnis als im Jahr zuvor. Massgebend für das Erreichen dieses Zieles wird der Absatz der neuen iPhones sein, welcher hierzulande erst in eineinhalb Wochen beginnt. 40 Prozent der von Mobilezone verkauften Geräte sind iPhones.
Unverständnis zeigt Lehman für Apples Entscheid, das iPhone 5s und das iPhone 5c nicht zeitgleich mit dem Deutschen Markt in der Schweiz einzuführen. Apple verdiene gutes Geld auf dem Schweizer Markt und deshalb hätte es der IT-Gigant seiner Meinung nach nicht zulassen dürfen, dass Schweizer Kunden bei der Lancierung neuer Produkte hinten anstehen müssen.

OS X Mavericks Update: Mac für das Update vorbereiten
In den nächsten Wochen wird Apple das neue Mac-Betriebssystem «OS X Mavericks» veröffentlichen. Das erstmals im Sommer gezeigte neue OS X bringt «über 200 neue Funktionen». Wann genau OS X Version 10.9 veröffentlicht wird, ist aktuell noch nicht bekannt. Apple hat das System einzig für den «Herbst 2013» angekündigt. Vor knapp zwei Wochen hat Apple jedoch eine fertige «Golden Master»-Version von OS X Mavericks an Entwickler verteilt — man kann also mit einer baldigen Veröffentlichung des neuen OS X rechnen.
Apple gestaltet den Update-Prozess bei Mac OS X vornehmlich einfach. Wir empfehlen aber dringend, ein solch grosses OS-X-Update nicht einfach blind zu installieren, sondern das Udpate etwas zu planen. Nachdem unsere Anleitung für iOS 7 so gut angekommen ist, haben wir hier auch ein paar Tipps für das kommende grosse Mac-Update zusammengestellt.

2011er MacBook Pro mit GPU-Fehler?
In den Support-Foren von Apple häufen sich Meldungen von Nutzern, die über Probleme mit der integrierten Grafikeinheit ihres MacBook Pro klagen. Eine erhöhte Gefahr besteht den Meldungen zufolge für die Besitzer eines MacBook Pro mit einem 15- oder 17-Zoll-Display aus dem Frühjahr 2011.
Das Problem taucht den Meldungen zufolge dann auf, wenn das MBP automatisch von der integrierten Intel-Grafik auf den leistungsfähigeren AMD-Grafikprozessor wechselt. Nutzer von betroffenen Geräten berichten von Verfärbungen auf dem Display, Bildverzerrungen und im schlimmsten Fall vom Einfrieren der Bildschirmanzeige. Auch nach mehrmaligen Neustart ist es den Betroffenen meist nicht möglich, den Fehler zu beheben.

Apple demands site remove iTunes Radio contract
If you scour the tech landscape, you'd be hard pressed to find a company more preoccupied with secrecy than Apple. While Apple understandably takes steps to prevent the release of details surrounding new products, they also like to keep, as much as possible, details surrounding their operations under wraps.
That being the case, Apple flexed some of its corporate and legal muscle recently when it demanded that a website called Digital Music News remove a copy of an iTunes Radio contract it had offered to small independent record labels.
And just what was the legal theory Apple posited in requesting the site take down the contract?

Share Anytime is a clever collaborative whiteboard app for iPad
There are a lot of whiteboard- and document-sharing solutions on both the Mac and iOS platforms. MetaMoji Corporation is debuting Share Anytime, a free app that allows teams to see documents, drawings and photos in real time and mark them up interactively. MetaMoji also offers Note Anytime, which has been a popular and highly rated PDF-markup tool.
A user can start, or in Share Anytime lingo, be chairman of a meeting, and invite others to watch or participate. There are annotation tools, and you can add symbols from a large library of icons or draw in freehand using several pen options. Photos can be imported from your iPad,

Valve shows off how its Steam Controller is going to work
Selling Steam gamers -- who are used to playing their games with a keyboard and mouse -- on a handheld controller is no easy task. Valve knows this, and since the original announcement of the company's new Steam Controller, there have been plenty of questions as to how precise it actually is. To help calm some of the ruckus, Valve has produced a video showing the controller being used with many popular games.

New App Bypasses Snapchat Screenshot Notifications; Snapchat Details Law Enforcement Requests [iOS Blog]
Released over the weekend, new app SnapHack is designed to allow users to save snapshots and videos sent via Snapchat without giving the sender a notification (via The Los Angeles Times). Snapchat photos are meant to be ephemeral, disappearing from servers and devices within seconds after viewing, with Snapchat providing notifications if a photo or video is saved. SnapHack bypasses Snapchat’s screenshot notification mechanism by culling unread photos and videos from Snapchat’s servers. The app asks users to log in with their Snapchat credentials, where it is able to secretly save unread photos and videos to the camera roll. The Wolf Among Us hits snag on Mac, release delayed
The latest episodic adventure from Telltale Games, The Wolf Among Us, has been getting favorable reviews around the web, but Mac gamers haven't yet been able to sample the new title. According to a post on Telltale's community site, the Mac version has run into "an unforeseen issue," and will be delayed a "few days."
The Wolf Among Us features an alternative take on classic fairy tales and children's stories including Snow White, The Three Little Pigs and Little Red Riding Hood.
