iTunes outages reported by some
Apple has confirmed that users may have experienced an outage across its store services today, including iTunes, the App Store, Mac App Store, and the iBookstore. The outage effected access to iTunes in the Cloud, iTunes Match, and the ability to restore purchases from iCloud backup. In total the outage latest about an hour and a half.
iTunes and Store services weren't the only hiccups in the Apple system, though they were the longest lasting. FaceTime and the Game Center were also briefly down for around 20 minutes.
The issues have been fixed and everything should now be running normally.iTunes outages reported by some

Facebook and Cisco to offer free WiFi for the price of a check-in

Sprint's HTC One gets Android 4.3, other US carriers to follow this month
Owners of the unlocked HTC One have already received the update to Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, but now it's time for the smartphone's US carrier variants to get the goods. Sky+ receiver upgrade brings as-you-type TV search with unified results

Not on Steam Sale offers a huge discount on a ton of indie titles
Valve's Steam service runs sales on its plethora of titles quite frequently, but unfortunately not every game is available on Steam -- that's where the Not On Steam Sale comes in. Offering a total of 35 indie titles (many of them playable on Mac), the sale is a great way to stock up on a whole bunch of great games you may never have heard of.

New Video Explores Possibility of Touch ID in Fifth-Generation iPad
A new video that explores the possibility of a Touch ID fingerprint sensor on the fifth-generation iPad has been released on YouTube channel Unbox Therapy. In the video, the purported front panel of the fifth-generation iPad is compared to a home button with a fingerprint sensor removed from the iPhone 5s and a home button removed from a standard iPhone. The standard home button does not appear to fit inside the casing of the iPad 5, while the smaller home button equipped with a fingerprint sensor does indeed fit. While this is not concrete evidence by any means, it does suggest that the fifth-generation iPad is potentially able to support the Touch ID hardware. A major caveat, however, is that Apple’s fifth-generation iPad is expected to take design cues from the iPad mini. Apple TV hacker discovers how to add custom sites
David Schuetz, an Apple TV hobbyist, has been exploring some interesting behavior on pre-iOS 7 (ATV 6.x) Apple TVs. After a bit of hacking, he discovered a way to enable an Add Site feature. This feature opens the possibility of adding custom sites to the Apple TV menu, letting him hook up a Raspberry Pi media server to his ATV.

Samsung reportedly not alone in cheating Android benchmarks
Samsung has come under fire this week for allegedly inflating the benchmark scores for the Galaxy Note 3 among other Android devices, but -- shocker -- the company is not alone in enhancing scores. AnandTech just published a report that shows ASUS, HTC and other companies using the same "benchmark detect" function to artificially bump up the numbers. According to the site, virtually all OEMs run a CPU optimization on at least one of their devices, save for Apple, Google's Nexus 4 and Nexus 7 and Motorola's latest crop of phones. Following Tuesday's report that Samsung artificially inflates its benchmarking scores, well-respected hardware review site AnandTech has published evidence suggesting nearly all mobile manufacturers, with the exception of Apple and Motorola, use CPU/GPU optimizations to game benchmark tests. iPad 5 and iPad Mini 2 to Be Equipped with 8-Megapixel Rear Cameras
Apple's fifth-generation iPad and second-generation iPad mini may receive a significantly improved camera, according to KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. Qualcomm Marketing Executive Calls Apple's 64-Bit A7 Chip a 'Marketing Gimmick'
Qualcomm chief marketing officer Anand Chandrasekher said Apple's 64-bit A7 processor, first introduced in the iPhone 5s, is a "marketing gimmick" and there is "zero benefit" to the consumer from the chip, according to an interview with Techworld. 64-bit ARMv8 processors were first introduced back in 2011, though Apple's A7 is the first 64-bit ARM chip to be released commercially. The New York Times on Monday published a fascinating article detailing how smartphones like the iPhone are opening up whole new avenues of opportunities for the visually impaired.
In one profile, the Times details how the iPhone has helped Luis Perez, who is close to being fully blind, take professional photographs. When Dell said it was going to revive the Venue brand, we assumed it was referring to Windows tablets. And indeed it was -- it just announced the Venue 8 Pro and Venue 11 Pro running Windows 8.1. But what we didn't know was that Dell was also planning on getting back into the Android market, and that these devices, too, would fall under the Venue brand. Here at a press event in New York City, the company announced the Venue 7 and Venue 8, both of which run Android and will be offered with optional 4G. Cinefex "classic collection" coming to iPad in 2014
One of my favorite things in the world, Cinefex magazine, has funded the digitization of its older magazines to its iPad app thanks to a Kickstarter campaign that has become the fourth most-funded publishing project on the site to date.
Cinefex, for those who don't know, is a magazine that takes a behind-the-scenes look at special effects work for Hollywood movies. News: iCloud email push notifications return to Germany
German iCloud users can now receive push email notifications again, Apple has confirmed. The feature was restored last night after a delay of more than 19 months, caused by a dispute with Google’s Motorola Mobility which forced Apple to deactivate the notifications. Apple will chinesische Import-Steuern umgehen
Einem Bericht von DigiTimes zufolge, soll sich Apple bereits seit einiger Zeit darum bemühen, die in China hergestellten iPhones direkt im Land zu verkaufen. Dabei sollen die iPhones, welche in China hergestellt worden sind, direkt ab der Fabrik an die Abnehmer im Inland verschickt werden. Foxconn würde damit vom reinen Produzenten zum Dienstleister für Apple aufsteigen. Dies dürfte nicht nur für ein grösseres Arbeitsvolumen, sondern auch für eine grössere Marge sorgen.
Den Insidern zufolge haben sich Vertreter von Apple, Foxconn und den Behörden über die entsprechenden Modalitäten geeinigt. Bereits im September soll eine geringe Anzahl von iPhones direkt ab der Foxconn-Fabrik im chinesischen Zhengzhou ausgeliefert worden sein. Unklar ist, wann diese Frachtmethode zum Standard werden könnte. Apple acknowledges iMessage bug in iOS 7, says fix is on the way
As is typically the case with any major iOS update, the release of iOS 7 has brought with it a small number of bugs. One such bug is a glitch in iMessage wherein some users aren't receiving iMessages sent to them while others are finding that they can't send iMessages at all. While restarting a troubled iOS device seems to alleviate the issue for some, this solution reportedly doesn't do the trick for everyone.
To that end, Apple late on Tuesday night confirmed to the Wall Street Journal that it is aware of the issue and plans to implement a fix in an upcoming software update.

Apple scheint bereits in dieser Woche einige Mitarbeiter und Mobilfunk-Provider mit dem nächsten Minor-Update von iOS 7 ausgestattet zu haben. Die ausgewählten Testpersonen sollen gemäss den Informationen von BGR die finalen Tests an iOS 7.0.3 durchführen. German iCloud users may use push again, reports FOSS Patents. Push iCloud email went live again at 9PM local time in Germany last night, more than 19 months after Google's Motorola used a patent the company held to bar Apple from offering its iCloud users in the country the popular feature.

Investor Icahn fordert von Apple massiven Aktienrückkauf
Investor Carl Icahn hat sich am Montag mit Apples CEO Tim Cook zum Abendessen getroffen, um mit ihm über den unterbewerteten Aktienkurs von Apple zu diskutieren. Nach dem Essen schrieb der umtriebige Investor auf Twitter, dass er sich stark für einen Aktienrückkauf in der Höhe von 150 Milliarden US-Dollar eingesetzt habe. Apple hat sich allerdings noch nicht dazu entschieden, ein entsprechendes Programm zu starten. Die Gespräche werden in drei Wochen trotzdem fortgesetzt, wie der Investor betonte.
Insbesondere der Verwaltungsrat von Apple würde sich gegen einen Aktienrückkauf wehren, wie Icahn gegenüber dem Fernsehsender CNBC sagte. Unbekannt ist, was Tim Cook von Icahns Vorschlag hält. Apple wird sich dem Druck des Investors wohl kaum beugen, wie sich Experten sicher sind.

Apple can push iOS email across German borders again
Apple switched on its push email services for iOS devices in Germany again after posting a bond of €100 million (US$135 million).In February 2012, Apple was forced to switch off push email services for iOS devices in Germany after it lost a patent lawsuit brought by the now Google-owned Motorola Mobility.Motorola decided to enforce an injunction granted by the Regional Court of Mannheim, meaning that users of iOS devices in Germany were only able to receive mail when they opened the Mail app, or when the app is set to check for email. Apple veröffentlicht Firmware-Updates für MacBooks
Apple hat für zahlreiche MacBooks ein Firmware-Update veröffentlicht, mit welchem das Unternehmen Probleme in Bezug auf die Akkusteuerung beheben will.
Die Installation des Updates wird unter anderem für diejenigen MacBook Pro empfohlen, welche in der Mitte des Jahres 2012 veröffentlicht worden sind. Damit soll das Ausschalten der Batterie verhindert werden, wenn der Akku-Stand unter ein Prozent fällt.
Ebenfalls empfohlen wird ein Update für diejenigen MacBook Air, welche in der Mitte der Jahre 2012 und 2013 auf den Markt kamen. Bei diesem Update wird ein Fehler behoben, bei welchem der Akku aus unbekannten Gründen ausschaltet, wenn mehr als 1’000 Ladezyklen durchgeführt worden sind.

This little box adds NFC mobile printing to recent HP LaserJet, Officejet printers
HP wasn't the first to embrace near-field communications (NFC) as a way for printers to keep up with the mobile world--Brother gets that prize--but it's catching up fast. On Tuesday, the company announced the 1200w Mobile Printing Accessory, a little box that attaches to a printer's USB port to bring NFC capability.The 1200w works with 2008-era and later LaserJet and Officejet printers (and it assumes that the rear USB port is free, because most business printers use ethernet or another connection). When it ships in early December, the 1200w Mobile Printing Accessory will have a promotional price of $40, a nice discount from its regular price of $50.The idea is that you just plug in the device and print. Apple behebt iMessage Bug mit nächstem Update
Nach der Lancierung von iOS 7 meldeten sich in den Support-Foren von Apple einige Nutzer, welche keine iMessages mehr versenden und empfangen konnten. Die iMesssages scheinen eigentlich verschickt worden zu sein, obwohl dies nicht der Fall ist. Während das Problem bereits bei der ersten Version von iOS 7 auftauchte, wurde es den betroffenen Nutzern zufolge mit iOS 7.0.2 noch schlimmer.
In einer Stellungnahme gegenüber dem Wall Street Journal hat Apple die Probleme mit iMessage bestätigt. Apple geht davon aus, dass lediglich der Bruchteil eines Prozents der Nutzer von diesem Problem betroffen ist. Apple verspricht, mit dem nächsten iOS-Update eine Problemlösung bereitzustellen.

It's always fun to take a look back at the websites of yesteryear just to get a bit of perspective, and there may be no better example of this than Apple's homepage from 2001. The highlight of the site is a fancy graphic showing off the then-new iBook. Apple, Google and host of other tech companies sign letter asking for greater transparency regarding government surveillance
Apple and a host of other tech companies, including Google, Microsoft, Facebook and Reddit, have all signed their name to a letter expressing support for proposed bills that would enable them to reveal more details about government requests for information.
The bills in question include the Surveillance Transparency Act of 2013 and the Surveillance Order Reporting act of 2013. Both bills would allow companies to release to the public statistical information about secretive government requests made to "Internet, telephone, and web-based service providers for information about their users and subscribers."

One of the new features of iOS 7 is the ability to send photos, contacts and other information from one iOS device to one or more other devices through AirDrop. AirDrop works on:
iPhone 5 or later
iPad (fourth generation)

iPod touch (fifth generation)
It's surprisingly easy to use. In this short video, we'll show how to set up AirDrop and use it to send a note between iOS 7 devices. Daily iPhone App: Argus fitness app uses the M7 to track your steps
The iPhone 5s and its M7 motion coprocessor are opening the doors to a new wave of fitness apps that take advantage of the low-power motion processing available with the motion chip. One of the first apps to use the data from the M7 is the Argus - Motion and Fitness Tracker from Azumio.
The big draw of Argus for many people will be the step tracking, which is pulled from the M7 on the iPhone 5s and from GPS with older devices. I've tested the Argus step data on the iPhone 5s, and it compares favorably with the data from the Fitbit Flex -- with one caveat. For the step tracking on the iPhone to be accurate, you have to always have your phone on your person, which can be a big problem for some folks.

MPlayerX offers multi-format playback for OS X
MPlayerX (free) is one of those fabulous utilities like VLC, NicePlayer and MPEG Streamclip that seems to have ended up on my Mac as a must-have playback app. It offers an OS X wrapper around FFmpeg and MPlayer libraries. These enable it to handle a wide range of media codecs without requiring you to install extra packages.
