iOS 7: Camera changes make it better, but it still loves to crash
A very strange thing happened during the three months I tested the revamped Camera app in iOS 7. I started out relying, as usual, on Camera+. It's been a mainstay on my iPhone for several years. But as the weeks went by, I found myself using that popular app less and less until it's now sitting a bit lost on the home page of my iPhone.
While the built-in Camera app isn't that far removed from its iOS 6 counterpart, there are a number of changes that make it better than what it was.

SimCity Expansion 'Cities of Tomorrow' Coming November 12 [Mac Blog]

iOS 7 on an iPad 2: First impressions
Shorty after Apple released iOS 7, we began hearing reports that it's buggy on the iPad 2. Everything from crashing apps to general wonkiness seemed to be troubling some users. With that in mind, I updated my own iPad 2 to iOS 7 try it out. Here are my first impressions of Apple's new mobile operating system on an older piece of hardware.
Installation
Installation was a breeze. After backing up my iPad, the process unfolded as expected. It's noteworthy that iTunes would not execute the installation until a full backup was complete. It failed at first as I had to free up some space on my MacBook Air's drive. Once that was done, it went swimmingly.

iOS 7 Lock Screen Vulnerability Gives Access to Photos, Email
There appears to be a lock screen vulnerability in iOS 7 that allows access to a device’s photos, email, and social networking accounts. According to Jose Rodriguez, who provided a video of the bug to Forbes, a simple set of gestures gives unwarranted access to a device running iOS 7. The exploit can be initiated by swiping upwards on the device's lock screen to access the Control Center and open the Clock app. Once the clock app is open, holding the phone's sleep button will cause the "Slide to Power Off" option to appear. Tapping on cancel at this juncture and then double clicking on the home button will open the phone's multitasking screen, providing access to the camera and the photos on the device. The key to the trick, however, is to access the camera app from the lock screen first, causing it to appear in the recently used apps list.

Two controller makers are teasing MFi "Made for iPhone" game controllers following the public release of iOS 7. The new OS includes special APIs for third-party hardware game controllers, turning the iPhone and iPad into gaming systems on par with other handheld consoles. iOS 7 lock screen vulnerability reported, and here's how to fix it
It took less than 24 hours for someone to find a way to break through iOS 7's pass code feature, and wouldn't you know it, the new Control Center is to blame. By going through a rather simple series of swipes and taps, a user can bypass the lock screen on some iOS 7 devices. Diptic PDQ is a fast way to make attractive collages with iOS
I've reviewed Diptic in the past. It's a great iPhone app for creating photo collages on the fly. Now, Diptic PDQ (US$0.99, universal) gives you many of the same features with a new look and a quicker workflow.
The developers call it a "stripped down" version of Diptic, but don't let that fool you. Diptic PDQ has the same wide feature set but far fewer design templates. While Diptic has 200, Diptic PDQ offers just 35 templates.

Google drops its black menu bar, rolls out more streamlined look for the web
Some users of Google's web-based products may have already seen the familiar black menu bar disappear from Gmail or another of its sites, but the company has now confirmed that was only just the beginning. Google's announced today that a broader rollout is underway that will see most of its products get a new "app launcher" in its place. The iPhone 5c can be cheap in China
When Apple introduced the iPhone 5c, analysts and pundits were taken aback that the device was not as cheap as they were anticipating. How, they pondered, would Apple be able to increase marketshare without a more affordable device aimed at emerging markets?
The result? A huge sell-off in Apple shares.
As is typically the case with respect to Apple-related panic, however, the reality is much less alarming than the hysteria would have you believe.

Google Releases New Universal 'Quickoffice' iOS App for Free [iOS Blog]
Google today announced plans to make its Quickoffice software free to all users. Quickoffice, which was reintroduced on iOS last year after Google purchased the software company, is designed to allow Google users to view and edit Microsoft Office files. Google's decision to make Quickoffice available for free comes after Apple announced that its own iWork software (along with iPhoto and iMovie) would be provided for free with new iPhones, iPads, and iPod touches. Apple is silently telling us to stop asking for near-field communication
We've been hearing rumors about an NFC-enabled iPhone and/or iPad for years now, and the song is always the same: "Sources say the next iDevice will have NFC, and it's about time!" Yet here we sit, with a pair of new iPhones just a day from launch, and no NFC in sight.
If there's anything the iPhone 5s and AirDrop should tell us, it's that we should stop expecting an Apple smartphone or tablet with near-field communication, at least for a while.

It's important to separate the two primary uses for NFC: Sharing and payments.

Google Wallet released for the iPhone
Whoa, this one caught our newsroom off-guard: Google has finally brought Google Wallet to iOS, with a version that came out for the iPhone today.
Along with the iOS release, Google has added the ability to send money from within the app. My husband, who uses Google Wallet on his Galaxy Nexus, pointed out that the interface has received an overhaul across the board with this release. You'll also be able to keep track of loyalty programs and receive offers targeted to Google Wallet users. About the only thing iOS users do not have is the ability to use tap-to-pay (obviously for NFC reasons).
Google Wallet is a free download and requires iOS 6 or above.

Government Officials Praise 'Activation Lock' Feature of iOS 7 Following Public Release
A pair of prosecutors, New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman and San Francisco District Attorney George Gascón, have been pressing Apple for months over a rash of thefts of mobile devices, including iPhones and iPads. Gascón in particular had been pushing for a 'kill switch' that could permanently disable stolen iOS devices. Today, Gascón and Schneiderman praised Apple's release of the Activation Lock feature in iOS 7, calling it the "world's first attempt to implement a technological solution to the global smartphone theft epidemic".

Road to iPhone 5s: Finderabdruck-Sensor «Touch ID»
Am Freitag, 20. September, kommt die siebte iPhone-Generation «iPhone 5s» in ausgewählten Ländern auf den Markt. In den USA, UK, Deutschland, Frankreich, China, Japan und einigen weiteren Ländern wird man ab Freitag die Möglichkeit haben, das neue iPhone-Modell zu kaufen. Wann das neue Modell auch in der Schweiz erhältlich sein wird, kann uns auch Apple Schweiz nicht mitteilen. Apple kündigte vergangene Woche einzig an, dass die neuen iPhones «bis im Dezember» in 100 weiteren Märkten verfügbar sein soll. Vermutlich wird es Oktober oder November, bis das iPhone 5s auch hierzulande verfügbar sein wird. Das neue iPhone bringt neben seinen neuen Farbvarianten «Gold» und «Spacegrau» unter anderem ein neues Kamera-System, neue Prozessoren und ein Fingerabdruck-Leser.

Google Drops NFC Requirement for Google Wallet, iOS App Now Available [iOS Blog]
Google today launched its Google Wallet payments app for iOS, allowing users to send money via email, store credit and debit cards, keep track of loyalty programs, and more. Apple has steadfastly refused to adopt NFC and because it has fallen out of popularity, Google recently ceased requiring NFC technology in order to utilize the app on Android, shifting its focus from mobile payments to focus on loyalty cards, merchant offers, and discounts. Mobile app download tally will soar above 102B this year
Mobile apps continue to be a major driver of the smartphone and tablet ecosystem and are a big reason people purchase and use those devices.Gartner on Thursday said the number of overall mobile app downloads -- both free and paid -- will soar to 102 billion by the end of this year, up from 64 billion in 2012. By 2017, the number of app downloads should reach nearly 269 billion.Mobile app revenues will be $26 billion in 2013, up from $18 billion last year, Gartner said. That $26 billion in revenues comes from paid downloads and in-app purchases -- even though only 9% o all downloads this year cost money. Macworld Lab recently cobbled together the Bride of Frankenmac, a PC that runs OS X. One reader pointed out that our choice of processor and components wasn't close enough to the specifications of the Mac Pro that we used for our performance comparisons. Apple's Activation Lock draws praise from US prosecutors
While some frustrated potential iOS 7 upgraders are cursing Apple this fine September day, prosecutors in San Francisco and New York are giving iOS 7 rave reviews thanks to the inclusion of Activation Lock in Apple's new mobile operating system.

Get to know iOS 7: Voice Memos
If you guessed that the Voice Memos app--virtually unchanged since its iOS 3 release--would ditch the big shiny microphone and VU monitor for something a little sleeker in iOS 7, you would be absolutely right. The new Voice Memos looks nothing like its former self--indeed, about the only thing it shares with that incarnation is the ability to record audio. (It's still only available for the iPhone and iPod touch, however.)The Voice Memos app uses the black background favored by Contacts and Stocks in iOS 7, using white and gray text along with blue and red accents. The app features a simple black timeline bar with a blue playhead; tap the red record button, and gray waveforms are recorded along it. You can start and stop a recording at any time by tapping that big red button again, though it won't save until you tap Done. Once you do so, Voice Memos prompts you to name it, and then adds it to the memos list, which takes over the screen on smaller devices, leaving only the record button at the top.

The new Notes and Reminders are sleeker, simpler versions of their predecessors.NotesNotes has been part of iOS since the release of the first iPhone. It's gotten a visual overhaul in iOS 7, though little in the way of new functionality.Most prominently, Notes's skeuomorphic yellow legal pad look goes away in iOS 7. If you have been used to using different Apple IDs for different apps in iOS 6, you can still do that in iOS 7, but some of the details have changed.
One of the first complaints that came in was about Find My iPhone, with several people writing in worried that Apple had done away with the ability to use different Apple IDs with the app. But there is a 'Sign Out' button on the first screen. Simply tap that button, and you will be able to use a different Apple ID for Find My iPhone.

iPhone 5c, 5s teardown by Australian repair shop
They're not due in the US until tomorrow, but it's already tomorrow somewhere in the world, and that somewhere is Australia. Well, that didn't make any sense, but the point is that some blokes at Sydney, Australia-based iExperts got their hands on some brand new iPhones and did a teardown before the guys at iFixit were able to do the same.
As usual, the devices are locked down with Pentalobe screws and require the use of a suction cup to remove the screen. The team noticed that there's a special cable that connects the Touch ID sensor on the iPhone 5s to the charging port assembly -- not sure of the reason, but I'd speculate that it's for grounding the sensor when the iPhone is docked and charging.

The OmniGroup has overhauled its iOS apps for the iOS 7 release, including creating a completely revamped OmniFocus on the iPhone that is just a joy to use. Apple's Asian Online Stores Go Down Ahead of Staggered iPhone 5s Order Launches
Apple has taken its Asian online stores offline for the time being, preparing for the launch of iPhone 5s orders in several markets there. Unlike with the iPhone 5c pre-order launch last week which took place at a uniform 12:01 AM Pacific Time, the iPhone 5s online order launches are staggered around the world in order to accommodate the in-store launches happening in many of the same countries at 8:00 AM local time. YouTube mobile app will soon offer offline viewing
In a rare instance of non-iOS 7 related news, YouTube announced on Wednesday that it plans to implement a new mobile feature that will enable users to view YouTube videos offline.
According to All Things D, the feature will allow users to store video on their mobile device for up to 48 hours before losing access to it. The feature, as one would expect from Google, will be free but will be supported by mobile advertisements.

Another app that received a major overhaul in iOS 7 was the Weather app. The card-style design of the app has been stripped away, leaving in its place a lovely translucent UI with weather images in the background. It's about time Apple updated Weather, as the basic, boxy design has been around since the first iPhone debuted in 2007.

Analysten erwarten starkes Wachstum bei iPhone-Verkäufen
Die Investmentbank «Morgan Stanley» schätzt, dass Apple im dritten Quartal, welches Ende diesem Monat zu Ende geht, rund 34.5 Millionen iPhones verkaufen wird. Bei Erreichung dieses Absatzes könnte Apple ein Wachstum von 28 Prozent gegenüber dem Vorjahr erzielen. Im dritten Quartal 2012 verkaufte Apple noch 26.9 Millionen iPhones.
Die Investmentbank hat zudem Schätzungen zum Absatz der Galaxy-Smartphones von Samsung veröffentlicht. Der koreanische Konkurrent von Apple wird in diesem Quartal schätzungsweise 47 Millionen Smartphones dieser Baureihe verkaufen können.
Die Schätzungen von Morgan Stanley basieren auf dem Such-Verhalten der Internet-Nutzer, welches in Deutschland, Grossbritannien, Frankreich, China, Japan und in den USA ausgewertet worden ist.

ReviewTimes tracks average Apple App Stores review times
Releasing an app is stressful. Once you've got a great idea you need to start development process of getting the art, code, and text in order. And when that's done, and your shiny new app is ready for release, you face the review process which is largely just a waiting game. How many days will you wait to find out if your app has been approved? Good news, now there's a way to find out.
Shiny Development is helping out with ReviewTimes, a site that roughly tracks the average time an app waits for Apple to review it for both the iOS and Mac App Stores. Using crowdsourced data from iOS and Mac developers on Twitter, the site provides an average of how long developers are waiting to get approval.

iOS 7: The Calendar app re-imagined
Apple made sweeping changes in iOS 7 and left few stones unturned in the core system apps that ship in the OS. Another app that saw some profound changes is the Calendar app, which was the recipeint of a significant visual overhaul.

Gone is the planner-style look in the iOS 6 version of the Calendar. Replacing it is a bleached white UI that is accented only by the black text, red navigation elements and color markers highlighting important dates. Though striking, it is minimalist to the max and my be jarring to users expecting the color splash that graces the iOS7 homescreen. The layout is easy to figure out with the calendar in the middle and controls at the top and bottom. The top controls allow you to switch from a day view, month view and year view. Apple hebt Mobilfunk-Download-Limit auf 100 MB
Ursprünglich betrug das Download-Limit für Apps auf iPhone und iPad per Mobilfunkverbindung einmal 20 MB, im März letzten Jahres wurde es auf 50 MB angehoben. Nun setzt Apple die Grenze bei 100 MB an und gibt die Kontrolle an den Nutzer ab. Wer unterwegs unbedingt eine bestimmte App über das Mobilfunknetz laden wollte, konnte unter Umständen ganz schön in die Röhre schauen, als das Limit bei 20 MB lag. Wo ist was in iOS 7?
iOS 7 ist nun für iPhone-, iPad- und iPod-touch-Nutzer verfügbar. Das neue Betriebssystem bietet «hunderte» neue Funktionen — vor allem aber wird der Benutzer mit iOS 7 mit einem komplett neuen Design konfrontiert. Während sich die Handhabung des neuen Systems grösstenteils den bisherigen iOS-Versionen orientiert, gab es doch an einigen Stellen grössere Veränderungen bei der Bedienung.
Wo ist die Suche von iOS 7?
Bisher auf einem eigenen Screen links neben dem ersten Home-Bildschirmen, ist die Suche «Spotlight» nun von jedem einzelnen Home-Bildschirm aus jederzeit aufrufbar. Um Spotlight aufzurufen, kann auf einem Home-Bildschirm mit dem Finger nach unten gestrichen werden, schon «zieht» man die Suche in den Fokus.
Dies funktioniert jedoch nicht, wenn man innerhalb eines App-Ordners ist, über das Dock unten streicht oder bei den Home-Bildschirmen zu weit oben

Analyst: Apple wird 5 bis 6 Millionen iPhones am kommenden Wochenende verkaufen
Die Börse reagierte nicht sonderlich erfreut, dass Apple bisher keine Zahlen für die Vorbestellungen des iPhone 5c veröffentlicht hat - die Apple-Aktie brach um 10% ein. According to Software Update on my iPhone I am running iOS 6.1.4 and my software is up to date. 18:30 - News that people are getting alerts and the software is available for download, I keep checking my iPhone. Daily iPhone App: Gresham College
Gresham College has existed for centuries in the United Kingdom. Located in London, it has been providing free lectures by some of the greatest minds in the world since 1597. Think of Gresham as the original TED, 400 years before TED was even conceived.

Apple increases size limit for cellular downloads to 100 MB
Coupled with the release of iOS 7, MacRumors tips us off to the fact that Apple has quietly increased the size limit for apps (and other types of media files) users can download via a cellular connection. Now, users can use their cellular connection to download files that are as large as 100 MB. The previous size limit was 50 MB, a threshold that was frustrating given that many individual podcast episodes, for example, often check in at slightly more than 50 MB.

Apple releases Chrome and Firefox extensions for Windows for iCloud bookmark syncing
Apple has quietly released extensions for the Chrome and Firefox desktop browsers for Windows. The extensions allow Windows users to sync their Safari iOS bookmarks across the two browsers. Prior to the Firefox and Chrome extension release, iOS Safari bookmark syncing was limited to Windows Explorer via the iCloud Control Panel 2.1.2 for Windows app.

BlackBerry Messenger for iOS to launch September 22
It's confirmed -- the long-rumored BlackBerry Messenger is ready to roll out this weekend to iPhone owners. The release arrives one day after the Android version lands in the Google Play Store on September 21. With these releases, BBM moves away from its BlackBerry-only roots and becomes a cross-platform messaging service.
On its website, BlackBerry listed the features that will be available to iOS BBM users at launch. These include the following:

Apple issues internal alert for iPhone activation server problems
If you're having problems with anything related to Apple's servers today, it shouldn't be much of a surprise. There are almost 700 million iOS devices in the world, and judging by the slow iOS 7 download times, it seems like all of them are are trying to update their devices at the same time. Transport Tycoon to hit iOS on October 3
In July, we reported that Chris Sawyer, the man behind popular simulation games such as Transport Tycoon and RollerCoaster Tycoon, was planning on bringing Transport Tycoon to iOS sometime this year.
An official release date, however, was not made available until now.
Fans of the original game, which was initially released in 1994, will be able to play the revamped mobile version on iOS come October 3.

Hooray! Skype iPhone update lets you join group voice calls
The Skype app for iOS has been pushed out with some significant changes, all for the better. The app now lets you join voice calls from your iDevice. It also claims video and voice call quality improvements. FAQs are now built into the app, and the dial pad has been tweaked.
Skype is a free app, and is not universal, but both the iPhone and iPad versions have been updated. The Skype app requires iOS 5 or greater and is optimized for the iPhone 5.

Google now offers some iOS users data compression in Chrome
Google has begun rolling out its Chrome data-compression feature to iOS users, reports TechCrunch. As the site notes, the feature is essentially a Google proxy that routes web requests through Google's servers. Once there, Google's PageSpeed libraries compress and optimize the content. Google says the feature has been shown to reduce data usage by 50 percent and speed up page load times on mobile networks.

iOS 7 video tip: How to view list mode in Calendar
Earlier today while Doc Rock and I were rockin' the TUAW TV Live show, I noticed a post by our editor-in-chief Victor Agreda, Jr. in which he bemoaned the fact that he could no longer get into list view for his calendar. Doc and I both figured that there had to be a way to do that, so we quickly started punching buttons on our iPhones to see where the list view was hiding. Doc suggested buying Readdle's Calendars5 app to get a list view, but I found the free answer before we told Victor to spend five bucks.

So I walked out of Tekserve and used Maps to find my hotel. I tried out iTunes Radio, but I was in a rush so I didn't have much time to set things up. Luckily Apple has asked some high-profile musicians to create some playlists under the "Featured Stations" section. Feedly embraces app development by opening up API to all
Feedly just got markedly more developer-friendly.
