iPhone 101: What is an ESN and how can it go bad?
Getting your older iPhone ready to sell on eBay? You might notice listings that advertise good ESN and bad ones. Just what are those?
An ESN is the electronic serial number assigned to your iPhone and are used with CDMA phones instead of SIM cards. There are several good guides through Ebay about what an ESN is and how it can go bad.
1. What does it mean if I have a bad ESN? A bad ESN means you can't activate an iPhone on your current carrier. For example, if you purchase an iPhone with a bad ESN from someone who used it on Verizon, then you won't be able to activate that phone on Verizon.

We now live in a world with two pet-based social networking apps
I love my cats, and I take photos of them frequently and with reckless abandon. That said, I'm not entirely sure I need more than one specialized app just for sharing photos of Nibbler and Cinnamon (don't judge me). Ok, now I'm excited about the iPhone 5s slow-mo recording feature
When Apple showed off the slow-motion camera feature at the iPhone event last week, I thought it was a neat addition but it didn't exactly blow me away. Maybe it was just the amount of information being thrown out in quick succession, or maybe it was the sample videos Apple used at the time, but whatever the reason, it took a pint-sized video from a fashion company to actually sell me on the idea. The video below was recorded by Burberry, a British luxury clothing and fragrance brand, during a recent fashion show in which they partnered with Apple to show off the capabilities of the iPhone 5s camera.

Carriers: iPhone 5s inventory on Friday will be low
AllThingsD blogger Ina Fried is reporting that sources at multiple US mobile carriers are giving her the word that the inventory of the iPhone 5s will be surprisingly low on Friday, September 20. One carrier source even went so far as to say that "We will have grotesquely unavailable inventory." Another carrier complained of "extremely disappointing shipments from Apple," but thought that demand for the iPhone 5s might not be as high as originally anticipated.

iPhone 5s Inventory Said to Be 'Severely Constrained' at Launch
iPhone 5s inventories are said to be very limited at launch, according to reports from several different publications sourcing employees at Apple Retail Stores and cellular carriers. Apple's newest retail store in Station Park near Salt Lake City, Utah is set to open on Friday, September 20, the same day that Apple will begin selling its iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c in stores. It may not be "World Backup Day" by the letter of the law, but it might as well be in spirit. iOS 7 is due to drop tomorrow, and we at TUAW would gently like to remind you to perform a backup before the new firmware is released.
You'll want a clean, recent copy of all your files (especially all those levels you so laboriously earned and all your precious media like the pics of your pets and kids, not to mention those awesome Barrista swirls).

Rockstar releases 'iFruit' companion app for 'Grand Theft Auto V'
Rockstar Games has released an iOS companion app for Grand Theft Auto V, which is now on sale worldwide. Grand Theft Auto: iFruit is a free iOS app that lets players customize cars in GTA V, including paint options, brakes, engines, window tints, personalized plates, and more. Any car customizations are then made available to players in the Grand Theft Auto V console game.
The app also features a mini game that lets you look after Chop the Dog. Chop is a new pet players can have in GTA V. You can teach Chop to do more tricks and play while you (virtually) feed and pet him. Taking care of Chop has real in-game benefits as he'll be better

Seit Tagen mehren sich Meldungen zu einem drohenden Zusammenbruch der Mobilfunknetze, sobald am 18. September das Update auf iOS 7 bereitgestellt wird. Dass iOS grundsätzlich zu einem Update über das Mobilfunknetz in der Lage ist, ist zwar korrekt. Allerdings liegt die Grenze bei maximal 50 Megabyte – und iOS 7 liegt darüber.

Amazon has released an update to its Amazon Instant Video app that adds a number of new features, most notably AirPlay support. Now users can stream content from their Amazon Instant Video app right to their Apple TV. UK government to begin testing mobile emergency alerts
UK folks could soon be made aware of local emergencies via their mobile phone after the government announced plans to test its new alert system later this year. With support from O2, Vodafone and EE, around 50,000 residents across Yorkshire, Suffolk and Glasgow will be subjected to individual tests which will assess the Cabinet Office's SMS and cell broadcast early warning systems and measure the public's response. Morgen Abend erscheint die finale Version von iOS 7, doch im Hintergrund haben bereits Tests für die nächsten Minor-Updates von iOS 7 begonnen. In den Web-Statistiken von 9to5Mac tauchen bereits seit einigen Tagen Zugriff von iOS-Geräten auf, welche mit iOS 7.0.1, iOS 7.0.2 sowie iOS 7.1 ausgerüstet sind. Alle Zugriffe kommen aus Cupertino oder der Umgebung des Apple-Hauptsitzes, womit es akkurat erscheint, dass es sich hierbei um Zugriffe von Apple-Testern handeln könnte. Auch in den Statistiken zu macprime.ch wurden in den vergangenen Tagen Zugriffe mit diesen noch unbekannten iOS-7-Versionen registriert.

Apple has posted a note on its Developer website asking developers to begin submitting apps optimized for the iPhone 5s' 64-bit A7 processor. From the note, titled "Submitting 64-bit apps":
You can submit 64-bit apps for iOS 7 today that take advantage of the power of iPhone 5s. Xcode can build your app with both 32-bit and 64-bit binaries included so it works across all devices running iOS 7. If you wish to continue to support iOS 6 then you will need to build for 32-bit only. While Apple is not offering pre-orders of the iPhone 5s in the United States or other western countries, that's not the case in China and Hong Kong, where the device has practically sold out already.

One of the UK's biggest retailers has updated its iOS app, adding support for Apple's still-fledgling Passbook system. The latest M&S app from Marks and Spencer adds several new features, including one-click purchasing, filter search, product recommendations, and a voice reader for customers who are visually impaired. O2 announces iPhone 5s pricing plans and they aren't cheap
O2 has officially announced its price plans for the iPhone 5s -- and they aren't pretty. As noted by Cnet, O2 now breaks up its tariffs for all phones sold under the "Refresh" plan, as the iPhone 5s will be. The tariffs are split between the cost of the phone and the airtime plans you purchase with the phone. To get 1 GB of 3G data, unlimited texts and messages will cost you £17 GBP. But that's just for the data plan. If you want a free 16 GB iPhone 5s with that, it will cost you £42 per month. The price goes up to £47 per month if you want 1 GB of 4G data.

iTunes 11.1 will have new iOS app organizer
Last night Apple seeded the eighth Developer Preview of the upcoming OS X 10.9 Mavericks. While there were no significant changes since the last build, this release does include the next version of iTunes, as images by Filipe Espósito shows.
The app screen organizer in iTunes has received frequent criticism since its inception, and iTunes 11.1 features a revamped iOS app organizer with a more logical home screen page layout, so users don't have to drag apps via a vertical layout anymore. Instead, home screen pages will appear side by side.
While iTunes 11.1 is certain to show up in the finally shipping release of OS X 10.9 Mavericks, presumably in October, it's possible we may see a version of

Road to iPhone 5s: A7 und M7 — 64-bit Architektur, Coprozessor und Grafik-Boost
Am Freitag, 20. September, kommt die siebte iPhone-Generation «iPhone 5s» in ausgewählten Ländern auf den Markt. In den USA, UK, Deutschland, Frankreich, China, Japan und einigen weiteren Ländern wird man ab Freitag die Möglichkeit haben, das neue iPhone-Modell zu kaufen. Wann das neue Modell auch in der Schweiz erhältlich sein wird, kann uns auch Apple Schweiz nicht mitteilen. Apple kündigte vergangene Woche einzig an, dass die neuen iPhones «bis im Dezember» in 100 weiteren Märkten verfügbar sein soll. Vermutlich wird es Oktober oder November, bis das iPhone 5s auch hierzulande verfügbar sein wird. Das neue iPhone bringt neben seinen neuen Farbvarianten «Gold» und «Spacegrau» unter anderem ein neues Kamera-System, neue Prozessoren und ein Fingerabdruck-Leser.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 und 10.1 könnten Multi-User Support bekommen

So ein Tablet in der Wohnung wird ja dann gern mal von allen benutzt, da kommt die Multi-User Unterstützung von Android 4.2.2 gerade recht. Die ist jetzt auch auf einer Test-Firmware für das Samsung Galaxy Tab 3.8.0 und das 10.1 aufgetaucht (die das Feature bisher nicht unterstützen), was zwar nicht unbedingt heisst, daß sie auch tatsächlich implementiert wird und wann das passieren könnte, es aber einigermaßen wahrscheinlich macht. Bis dahin müsst ihr euch noch mit etwaigen Mitnutzern die Daten teilen.

iPhone-5c-Vorbestellungen sorgen bei Investoren für Nervosität
Während Apple in den letzten Jahren die Anzahl der iPhone-Vorbestellungen der ersten 24 Stunden offensiv kommuniziert hat, gibt es in diesem Jahr bisher keine Informationen zu den Vorbestellungen der neuen iPhone-Modelle. Unter anderem aufgrund dieser fehlenden Informationen hat die Apple-Aktie zum gestrigen Wochenstart erneut an Terrain verloren. Die Aktie verlor im Laufe des Montags 3.18 Prozent und notierte zu Handelsschluss bei 450.12 US-Dollar. Auch im nachbörslichen Handel verlor die Aktie weiter an Wert.
Seit dem letzten Freitag können Nutzer in den USA, Deutschland und weiteren ausgewählten Ländern das neue iPhone 5c vorbestellen. Nächster Special Event von Apple am 15. Oktober?
Den Informationen der Kollegen von MacGeneration zufolge soll Apple bereits wieder mit den Planungen eines Special Events begonnen haben. Der Blog will erfahren haben, dass Apple am 15. Oktober einen entsprechenden Event durchführen wird. Wo diese Veranstaltung stattfinden sollte, wurde allerdings nicht weiter ausgeführt.
Bereits seit einiger Zeit geht man von der Durchführung eines zweiten Special Events in diesem Herbst aus. Während beim ersten Special Event vom 10. ASUS hat heute das neue PadFone Infinity vorgestellt, das seinem Vorgänger in vielen Bereichen extrem gleicht. Am Mittwoch, 18. September 2013, wird Apple das neue Betriebssystem iOS 7 für iPhone, iPad und iPod touch veröffentlichen. Apple verteilt achte Beta von OS X Mavericks
Apple hat in der Nacht auf heute eine achte Vorabversion vom kommenden OS X 10.9 Mavericks an registrierte Entwickler verteilt (Build: 13A584). Entwickler können die neue Beta-Version über das Entwickler-Portal oder über Geräte mit der früheren Beta laden und installieren. Ebenfalls verfügbar wurde eine neue Vorabersion von Safari 6.1 für OS X Mountain Lion und OS X Lion.
OS X Mavericks und iOS 7 wurden von Apple anlässlich der WWDC Mitte Juni erstmals gezeigt. Beide Systeme wurden für «Herbst 2013» angekündigt. Während iOS 7 am morgigen Abend veröffentlicht wird, ist noch nicht bekannt, wann OS X Mavericks genau veröffentlicht wird — wahrscheinlich wird das neue System aber diesen oder nächsten Monat veröffentlicht.

Apple releases first iPhone 5c commercial, "Plastic Perfected"
Apple on Monday night rolled out its first commercial for the upcoming iPhone 5c. Titled "Plastic Perfected", the commercial features colorful liquids transforming into iPhone 5c devices and ends with the tagline, "For the colorful."

Apple has seeded the eighth Developer Preview of OS X Mavericks to developers, nearly two weeks after the release of the seventh Developer Preview. Pogo Art Contest winners show what's possible with an iPad and Pogo Connect stylus
That image you see above wasn't painted using traditional media like oil or acrylic, nor was it created on canvas with brushes. Instead, artist Michael Bartosiewicz used an iPad, the US$4.99 Procreate app, and a Ten One Design Pogo Connect stylus to pick up the Grand Prize in the 2013 Pogo Art Contest.

Rdio teaming up with terrestrial radio giant Cumulus Media for new free ad-supported streaming
The New York Times is reporting that the subscription-based online streaming service Rdio has made a deal with terrestrial broadcast giant Cumulus Media to provide advertising and content. Cumulus, which runs 525 radio stations, will advertise Rdio on its own stations in addition to providing content for streaming on the service.
It's a deal that works well for both parties, with Cumulus looking to enter the digital world as terrestrial radio's popularity wanes and Rdio looking to increase its own market share in the increasingly crowded streaming music market.
