iOS 7 video tip: Using Do Not Disturb on the iPhone
While the purpose of smartphones is to let us receive verbal and written communications from others, there are certain times when you don't necessarily want your phone to beep, ring or otherwise make a noise or show a notification. Do Not Disturb is a handy setting that lets you choose when you want receive calls or notifications.
In this short video, which can be set to full-screen for looking at details, you'll see how to enable Do Not Disturb and how to use the app's settings.

iPhone 5s tops sales at big US carriers
Not surprisingly, some analysts tried every which way to downplay the fact that Apple sold nine million iPhones in just three days. Some claimed, without no evidence to back it up, that the nine million figure included devices shipped to carriers but not yet purchased to consumers. Still others were quick to point out that the nine million figure encompassed iPhone 5c sales, while noting that Apple last year did not include weekend sales of the iPhone 4s in its iPhone 5 weekend launch tally.
While analysts can tinker with numbers and speculate all they want, it's damn near impossible to argue that Apple's most recent iPhone launch was anything but an overwhelming success.

Apple appeals ebook pricing case
This past summer, Judge Denise Cote ruled that Apple had colluded with a range of publishing companies in an effort to raise the price of e-books. Now comes word that Apple has filed a motion appealing the ruling. The appeal was filed on Thursday but formal arguments on the matter may be submitted as late as early 2014.

You love Star Wars -- yes, you do, don't lie -- and if you're an iOS gaming fan you probably also love Tiny Tower, the micromanagement game from developer NimbleBit. OtterBox has been making protective cases since 1998, making the company the great-granddaddy of the entire huge smartphone/tablet case market. The company announced a new member of the family yesterday, introducing the Commuter Series Wallet (US$44.95) for the iPhone 5/5s.

First Looks: Griffin Reveal for iPhone 5c
Long a staple of Griffin's iPhone case families over the year, Reveal ($20) has been released for the iPhone 5c. As expected, this case brings together black rubber edges with a clear polycarbonate backplate, which seems particularly fitting for the colorful plastic shells on Apple's mid-range iPhone. Walmart Drops iPhone 5c Pricing to $45 On Contract Through the Holidays [iOS Blog]
Following announcements from Best Buy and RadioShack that they will be offering $50 gift cards to iPhone 5c customers that will bring the prices down to $50 for a 16 GB model with a two-year contract, Walmart will be undercutting even those offers starting today by dropping its pricing to $45, reports MarketWatch. News: Apple aims to open stores in small India markets
Apple plans to enter smaller India markets by opening a number of new stores, according to The Economic Times. Tim Kobe: Apple Store chain not evolving
Tim Kobe is the co-founder of the design firm 8 Inc., and was one of the early designers involved in the Apple Store. Interviewed by the Dezeen website after the Inside interior design conference in Singapore, Kobe said that Apple's retail experience is "not evolving as fast as it could be."
Kobe thinks that "the design is getting a little long in the tooth," and that "retail is a competitive environment, and I think Apple's ready for that next shift." While Apple's retail results seem to prove that the design is working just fine, thank you, Kobe feels that "Since Steve passed away the momentum has slowed down a bit. It's imperative Apple shifts again. They should really refresh every five years.

Nexus 5 Bilder-Leak: Gerüchte reden von Release noch im Oktober

Security team describes iPhone Airplane Mode issue
The addition of an easily accessible control panel for turning on features like Wi-Fi, Brightness, and Airplane mode from the iPhone's lock screen was a welcome addition to iOS 7. Bugs & Fixes: When iTunes warns about untransferred items
When I attempted to update my new iPhone 5s to iOS 7.0.2, I got an error message in iTunes that claimed there were purchased items on my iPhone that had not yet been transferred to iTunes on my Mac. It warned that I should transfer these items before updating (see image above).This seemed a bit odd, as I did not recall purchasing any items on the iPhone since buying it. "Never mind," I thought, "Just sync the phone in iTunes and all will be well."Wrong. The irksome message popped up when I again selected to update to iOS 7.0.2.As it turns out, an Apple support document confirms that "iTunes Store and App Store content on your iOS device may not automatically transfer to your computer" when you sync. Mac OS X Mavericks released to devs in 'gold master' version
Apple has released a final ('gold master') version of OS X Mavericks to developers, hinting that the upgrade will go public during the week of 21 October. "Download OS X Mavericks GM seed and Xcode 5.0.1 GM seed, now available on the Mac Dev Center," a message sent to developers read. Citigroup fined $30 million for leaking iPhone research
Citigroup is learning the hard way that leaking unpublished research on iPhone production numbers to institutional investors ahead of other investors is wrong. The company has been fined US$30 million for sending that data to SAC Capital, T. Rowe Price, Citadel and GLC Partners ahead of official publication that would have been available to all investors.

Tim Cook emails Apple employees about anniversary of Jobs' death
Tomorrow, October 5, will be the second anniversary of Steve Jobs' passing. To mark the event, Apple CEO Tim Cook sent a heartfelt email to the company's employees. It reads, in part:
"I think of him often and find enormous strength in memories of his friendship, vision and leadership. He left behind a company that only he could have built and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple."
The company held a private ceremony to remember the late co-founder two weeks after his passing. In reading Cook's email, it's clear that Steve's memory is still very much alive in Cupertino.

Security Researchers Detail New Combination of Touch ID and iOS 7 Security Feature Bypasses [iOS Blog]
Berlin-based Security Research Labs has detailed various exploits within the iPhone 5s' Touch ID security feature and iOS 7 that allow would-be criminals to bypass the device's security features, reports Reuters. The method for bypassing the Touch ID security feature found on the iPhone 5s is very similar to the one used by the Chaos Computer Club, which also claimed to hack Touch ID earlier this month. A video posted on the group’s website shows how Touch ID can be bypassed using information gathered from fingerprints left on the victim’s phone display, demonstrating that a photo taken with the iPhone 4S can be used for developing a mold.

One area that's been quietly changed in iOS 7 is the keyboard. As pointed out by TechHive, there are new characters and useful shortcuts that'll make your typing time a little bit easier.
You'll see these changes in apps that are updated for iOS 7, and the changes can be subtle. The Twitter app, for example, now inserts both the @ and # symbols so you can easily message someone or write a hashtag. Apple seeds 'gold master' of OS X Mavericks to devs

Siri's voice, Susan Bennett
Atlanta's Susan Bennett has announced that hers is the original voice of Siri (though Apple won't confirm it). She has been doing voice work since the 70's and can be heard on GPS devices, automated phone systems and even the Delta airport terminals. But it was her gig as Siri's female voice that's added a bit of notoriety.
Bennett notes that she first heard her voice coming from an Apple iPhone when a friend contacted her and asked, "Isn't this you?" She didn't have a Siri-capable iPhone at the time, so she visited Apple.com to get her first listen.

While Apple has not confirmed the information, the report states that professionals within the technology industry are familiar with her voice, and cites an audio forensics expert with 30 years of experience who is certain that Bennett’s voice and the voice of Apple’s digital personal assistant are the same. Apples Raumschiff-Campus von Komitee genehmigt — nun fehlt noch der Stadtrat
Der geplante Hauptsitz von Apple hat im Genehmigungsverfahren eine weitere Hürde übersprungen. Die Planungs-Kommission der Stadt Cupertino hat anlässlich der Sitzung vom Mittwoch die Pläne für den neuen Campus genehmigt. Nun muss noch der Stadtrat von Cupertino entscheiden, ob Apple einen neuen Hauptsitz bauen darf. Der Entscheid wird für den 15. Oktober erwartet, während die definitive Genehmigung im November folgen dürfte.
Am Tag zuvor hat Apple die Pläne für den neuen Hauptsitz der Öffentlichkeit und der Kommission vorgestellt. Bei der Präsentation, welche von Apples Immobilien-Direktor Dan Whisenhunt durchgeführt worden ist, spielte wie bei anderen Apple-Präsentationen auch ein Video eine zentrale Rolle. Kompass und Lagesensor des iPhone 5s teilweise ungenau
Zum iPhone 5s mehren sich Berichte, dass nicht bei allen Geräten die Sensoren genau arbeiten. Im Fall des integrierten Kompasses sollen die Abweichungen bei bis zu 10 Grad liegen. Auch der Neigungssensor weist den Berichten nach teilweise Abweichungen von bis zu 2 Grad. Zumindest als Wasserwaage ist damit manches iPhone 5s momentan nicht tauglich. Apple beginnt mit Mitarbeiter-Schulung für OS X Mavericks
Einem Bericht von 9to5Mac zufolge haben die Experten von AppleCare mit dem Training für OS X Mavericks begonnen. In der mindestens sechs Stunden dauernden Schulung sollen die Supporter die wichtigsten Neuerungen von OS X Mavericks erlernen. Insbesondere sollen die AppleCare-Mitarbeiter in der Schulung über die Neuerungen, den Installationsprozess sowie die Problemlösungs-Ansätze informiert werden.
Die Trainings-Berater treffen sich für die Vorbereitungen in kleinen Gruppen, um möglichst wenig Informationen an die Öffentlichkeit dringen zu lassen. Eine ähnliche Strategie soll Apple bereits bei iOS 7 und iTunes Radio angewendet haben.

Just hours after releasing the first build of OS X 10.9 Mavericks without a "Developer Preview" label to AppleSeed members, Apple has issued the official "Golden Master" version of OS X 10.9 Mavericks to all developers.
A Golden Master build is the same, official version of software that will be released to customers. The fact that Apple has released the GM build to developers almost guarantees users will see the release of OS X 10.9 Mavericks sometime this month. OS X 10.9 Mavericks will introduce over 200 new features, notably iBooks for Mac, Maps for Mac, tabbed Finder, iCloud Keychain, Tags, and more.

Hat sich Apple weiteres Startup einverleibt?
Apple könnte sich anonymen Quellen zufolge das Startup «Cue» einverleibt haben. Bis vor wenigen Tagen hat das Unternehmen eine Assistenz-App für das iPhone angeboten, bevor die App ohne Begründung aus dem iOS App Store verschwunden ist. Den Gerüchten zufolge hat Apple für das Unternehmen, welches von Finanzinvestoren unterstützt worden ist, 40 Millionen US-Dollar bezahlt. Anderen Quellen zufolge soll sogar ein Kaufpreis von 50 bis 60 Millionen US-Dollar fällig geworden sein.
In einem kurzen Statement bedankten sich die Macher von Cue bei den Nutzern, ohne genauer auf die aktuellen Umstände einzugehen. Apple äusserte sich mit dem bei dieser Gerüchtelage typischen Satz, dass man von Zeit zu Zeit kleinere Startups übernehme und man dazu grundsätzlich keine Auskunft gibt.

Adobe ist gleich Opfer von zwei Hacker Attacken geworden. Sie sind sich nicht sicher, ob der Diebstahl von 2,9 Millionen Account-Daten und der des Source Codes einiger Apps wie Acrobat und ColdFusion zusammen hängen, noch wichtiger, sie wissen nicht ob die Bankdaten der betroffenen User wirklich umverschlüsselt waren. Dennoch wird jeder betroffene Nutzer aufgefordert sein Passwort zu ändern und sie wollen sogar die Transaktionen für einen Überwachen, die in der nahen Zukunft auf den Kreditkarten stattfinden. Liefern Kompass und Wasserwaage des iPhone 5s falsche Daten?
Nach der Lancierung des iPhone 5s meldeten sich in diversen Support-Foren Nutzer zu Wort, welche von falschen Daten beim Kompass, der Wasserwaage und dem Neigungsmesser berichteten (macprime.ch bereichtete). In einem ausführlichen Test hat sich nun gezeigt, dass die von den Nutzern beanstandeten Funktionen tatsächlich nicht wie versprochen funktionieren.
Bei der Wasserwaage zeigten sich im Test Abweichungen von zwei bis drei Grad. Nutzer berichten von Abweichungen, welche sich im Bereich von vier bis sechs Grad bewegen. Während sich die Messergebnisse zwischen dem iPhone 5s und dem iPhone 5 beim Neigungsmesser nur um ca. drei Grad unterschieden, betrug der Unterschied beim Kompass acht Grad.

OS X Mavericks im Gold Master bei Entwicklern

OS X passt so langsam nicht mehr zu iOS 7. Die neue Version, Mavericks, kommt in Kürze, denn bei den Entwicklern ist jetzt schon das Gold Master gelandet. OS X Mavericks may be on the horizon, but don't think we're done with Mountain Lion quite yet. Late on Thursday, Apple released OS X 10.8.5 Supplemental Update 1.0, along with iTunes 11.1.1.The Supplemental Update fixes a few issues with Mountain Lion, including a problem that might prevent some apps from using the FaceTime HD camera when running on a mid-2013 MacBook Air. Also patched are a pair of sleep issues: one where external drives were ejected after the computer went to sleep, and another where HDMI audio wouldn't work right after the computer was woken up. OS X Mavericks fertig — Apple verteilt Golden Master
Apple hat in der Nacht auf heute die neunte Vorabversion von OS X 10.9 an registrierte Entwickler verteilt. Das Build mit der Kennung «13A598» trägt den Zusatz «GM». Mit GM, oder Golden Master, werden diejenigen Vorabversionen, welche beim Ausbleiben von Problemen fast unverändert an die Kunden verteilt werden, bezeichnet.
Neben der Golden Master von OS X 10.9 hat Apple auch eine Golden Master von Xcode 5.0.1 verteilt.
Die beiden Veröffentlichungen bestärken die Gerüchte, wonach Apple OS X Mavericks noch in diesem Monat veröffentlichen wird. Bereits in den letzten Tagen haben sich die Gerüchte um eine baldige Lancierung des Apple-Betriebssysstems verdichtet.

Best Buy has announced on its website that it is giving a $50 gift card to anyone who purchases an iPhone 5c with a two-year contract. The offer is good between now and close of business on Monday, October 7th and available only in-store or with in-store pickup.

2.9 million Adobe customer accounts compromised
Adobe announced that 2.9 million of its customer account have been compromised in a "sophisticated" cyber attack on the company. Writing on its blog, Adobe said:

Apple gives AppleSeed members new OS X 10.9 build, drops "Developer Preview"
Apple has seeded what could possibly be the Gold Master build of OS X Mavericks to AppleSeed members. The build, labeled "Build 13A598," comes two weeks after the last developer preview of Apple's next Mac operating system. However, this time Apple has conspicuously left off the "developer preview" nomenclature, suggesting that this could be the final build of OS X Mavericks.
Other signs that this could be the final build include that there are no known issues with it, and of course, the fact that Apple has stated that OS X Mavericks will launch this fall. AppleSeed members can get the non-"developer preview" build by running Software Update on their Mac. If you notice any changes with this build, feel free to drop us a line.

Apple announces Mac app volume purchase program
Apple has given developers a heads-up that Mac apps will "soon be eligible to participate in the Volume Purchase Program for Business and Education" in the Mac App Store.
The message, which a tipster forwarded to TUAW, notes that the Volume Purchase Program gives educational institutions and businesses a way to purchase multiple copies of an app at one time.
Developers can also choose to offer a discount to educational institutions, at which point institutions purchasing 20 or more copies of an app in a single order get a 50 percent discount. Apps have to be enrolled in the program to be available at the educational discount.

I used the site to find a Verizon, 16 GB, Space Gray iPhone 5s in my area. I placed an order for in-store pickup, and about two hours later I was walking out of the Apple Store with a new iPhone.
Two caveats: First, "near you" is a relative term. The site seems to always show 20 Apple Stores, but some of them might be quite a distance from you. Sony shows off PlayStation iOS app slated to launch with PlayStation 4
Helping to cement Sony's embrace of iOS as an ally rather than a competitor, Sony Worldwide Studios President Shuhei Yoshida has offered some additional details of the official PlayStation app that is scheduled to launch alongside the PlayStation 4 console when it launched in November.
The app appears to offer much of the same functionality that gamers can access via their PS3 or PS Vita consoles currently, including trophy information, friend status and the PlayStation Store. Users can send and receive both text and voice messages, purchase games and other content, and receive invites from PS4 users.
The new app will also be used as a "second screen" for certain titles, allowing additional input and various bonus features.
