Volkswagen unveils MARTA, an iOS auto repair app
While many augmented reality applications are largely consumer-facing, Volkswagen is instead empowering its technicians with an AR-centric tool to expedite repair and service. Using an iOS app named MARTA (Mobile Augmented Reality Technical Assistance), workers servicing VW's futuristic new XL1 concept car can see detailed instructions as well as real-time labels for specific vehicle parts.

News: Logitech iPhone game controller leaked?
A picture of Logitech’s alleged iPhone game controller was leaked by @evleaks in a tweet. The apparent promo shot shows the front and back of the controller, which encompasses an iPhone 5. Carl Icahn reportedly pushed Tim Cook for $150B Apple share buyback
The planned dinner between investor Carl Icahn and Apple CEO Tim Cook took place as scheduled last evening, and Icahn is reporting through Twitter that the dinner was "cordial" and that he pushed for Apple to bump its share buyback program up to US$150 billion.
Icahn believes that Apple's share price is "extremely undervalued" and that the company should spend more of its cash to bolster it by purchasing more shares at the current price. The continued discussions between Icahn and Apple will most likely come after the next quarterly earnings call, which should happen sometime in the third week of October.

Apple TV gets NHL, Vevo in Germany
We've got good news for expat hockey players and music fans in Germany. According to Macerkopf, Apple TV has been updated for the German market with the additions of Vevo and the NHL channel.
Vevo has been making inroads with Apple TV for several months; the service came to North America and several other countries this past August. The service provides an on-demand library of more than 75,000 music videos in HD quality. Vevo also streams live concerts, original programing and special premieres.

Image of Potential Logitech MFi Controller Leaked
An image of what might be Logitech's upcoming MFi controller for the iPhone has been leaked on Twitter by @evleaks, who has been known to provide reliable images in the past. With the redesign of the music app in iOS 7, Apple also removed the ability to directly playback an entire track list from a specific genre. One great way to learn how to take and process better photographs is to learn from professionals, and for many of us time and circumstance precludes dropping everything to do an internship with a professional photographer. Fortunately, there are pros like Jessie Webster -- who runs the "Sweet Thing" blog -- who are kind enough to share their photography workflows with the world and help make our photographs better.

GolFlix Pro is a good idea that falls short of teaching golf on iOS
Golf apps are extremely popular on iOS. From games, to course directories, to tutorials, there's plenty to choose from. So I was interested when the folks behind GolFlix Pro asked me to look at their app, which uses videos to teach the fine points of golf as demonstrated by professionals.
The reality, sadly, did not meet my expectations. The US$4.99 app contains six videos, each two or three minutes long, that let you watch the swing of a small collection of PGA pros, including Correy Pavin, Se Ri Pak and Luke Donald. You see several swings, some in slow motion, and there are some brief comments by each pro. The app seemed light on content to me, so I asked a friend who is an excellent golfer to have a look.

Windows 8 users now outnumber Mac addicts
It took 11 months, but Microsoft's Windows 8 has passed Apple's OS X in market share, according to StatCounter.StatCounter's numbers for September show 7.46 percent market share for Windows 8, an increase of 0.44 percent over the previous month. That was enough to surpass Mac market share, which dropped 0.2 percentage points to 6.98 percent.Meanwhile, older versions of Windows are holding somewhat steady. BBC iPlayer Radio adds podcasts downloads
The BBC has added a long-requested feature to its iPlayer Radio app: podcast downloads. Version 1.2 allows users to download a podcast over WiFi and listen to it any time they want, even without an internet connection. The podcast download feature follows in the footsteps of a feature in the main BBC iPlayer app, which lets you download video content and watch it on a device without an internet connection.

Nintendo Wii production to cease 'soon,' at least in Japan

Yahoo! Sportacular Pro gets iPad support, Fantasy Football integration
Yahoo! has released a major new version of its wildly popular Yahoo! Sportacular Pro app which allows fans to track scores, stats, and news about myriad sports. The most immediate thing users will recognize about version 4.2 is iPad support. The app has also had a redesign for iOS 7, and now allows users to view their Yahoo! At least one thing was moving in the nation's capital this past weekend: electric cars. The third annual National Plug In Day came to Washington, D.C., and about 100 other locations across the U.S. to celebrate cars that plug in instead of gas up. Participation ballooned from only 65 cities last year and included sites in the Netherlands and Mexico. It's always "fun" to experience an issue just before a fix for it appears in our TUAW newsroom. In this case, I was receiving iMessages from my wife, but she wasn't seeing mine. Fearing that the worst had happened and I had been run over by a truck (while sitting at my desk), she called me. It turns out that a lot of people are running into this Messages app bug with iOS 7, where iMessages aren't being reliably sent out.

News: MobileMe customers lose storage, iCloud affected
Apple has informed former MobileMe members via email that their 20GB iCloud storage upgrade has expired. Those users who haven’t purchased a storage plan and are still using more than 5GB of iCloud space have found that iCloud has temporarily stopped working. We all new this day was coming. Apple has sent out emails informing iCloud users their complimentary iCloud storage has expired. The complimentary iCloud storage was a free extra 20 GB of storage for MobileMe members. Now all those members will be downgraded to the free 5 GB of iCloud storage all iCloud members get. Apple Ends Complimentary 20 GB Storage Plan for Former MobileMe Members
After notifying former MobileMe customers of an impending iCloud storage downgrade in August, the complimentary 20 GB of iCloud storage Apple has offered to those customers for the past two years has now expired. Piloten kämpften gegen das Surface 2 im Cockpit
Nach der Veröffentlichung des Surface 2 kündete Microsoft eine Kooperation mit Delta Airlines an. Anstelle der Papier-Karten sollen die DA-Piloten in Zukunft das Surface 2 nutzen, um die Flüge zu planen. Gleichzeitig werden 19’000 Flugbegleiter von Delta mit Windows Phones von Nokia ausgerüstet.
Gemäss den Informationen von AppleInsider waren die Piloten bei der Evaluation gegen die Nutzung des Surface als Flug-Assistenten. Tim Cook hat sich in einer Mail an die gesamte Apple-Belegschaft für den unermüdlichen Einsatz für das Unternehmen bedankt. Tim Cook lobte insbesondere die Anstrengungen, welche täglich in neue Produkte investiert werden.

EU-Komitee will Micro-USB-Anschluss für das iPhone
Das «Binnenmarkt- und Verbraucherschutzkomitee» des EU-Parlaments hat einstimmig einen neuen Gesetzesentwurf beschlossen, welcher einen weitreichenden Einfluss auf Apples Lightning-Connector haben könnte. Dem Entwurf zufolge müssten alle Strom-Anschlüsse der verschiedenen Mobiltelefone miteinander kompatibel sein. Das Komitee will die Hersteller zudem verpflichten, alle Mobiltelefone mit einem universalen Ladeadapter kompatibel zu machen.
