Game On: Smartphones pose little threat to gaming as we know it
Gaming is in a transitional period right now. We're approaching the end of a console generation, new handheld systems are attempting to gain a foothold, and smartphone gaming is just starting to put on its big boy pants and doing its best to swing with the big dogs. In short, it's a rather exciting time.
A recent article by Horace Dediu and Dirk Schmidt of Asymco suggests that rather than standing before the scheduled rebirth of home gaming -- as we do every 5-7 years or so -- we are actually witnessing its last days, and the smartphone craze will be the executioner. I disagree.
Before I dive in, I think it's important to separate mobile gaming and home console gaming. These are two very different beasts, and while you might see headlines for portable games alongside their console co

How smartphones mean 'game over' for consoles, portable game systems
If there's one Wall Street analyst who consistently makes sense when it comes to computing and mobility, it's Asymco's Horace Dediu. On a regular basis, Dediu charts the sales and shipping information released by consumer electronics companies like Apple and is able to spot trends that spell either good fortunes or a bleak future for the firms in question. Today's target was the gaming console companies, with Dediu's analysis showing how mobile devices -- specifically smartphones and tablets -- spell doom for sales of gaming consoles.
Didiu's numbers take a look at data from just two of the big three -- Nintendo and Sony -- as Microsoft does not provide sales information for Xbox. That confetti-like chart at the top of this post shows the bad

Jony Ive creates solid gold EarPods for charity auction
At an upcoming Sotheby's auction, folks will be able to bid on a pair of solid gold 18k EarPods designed by Apple design guru Jony Ive and industrial designer Marc Newson.
In addition to golden EarPods, there will be a number of other items up for auction, all curated by Ive and Newson.

Snapchat Micro will bring disappearing messages to Samsung's Galaxy Gear
There seems little doubt that much of the Galaxy Gear's success or failure will hinge on the selection of apps that arrive on smartwatch. Apple's Campus Decorated for Tomorrow's Media Event with New Banners
The entrance to Apple's building at 4 Infinite Loop, where its Town Hall auditorium is located on its Cupertino, California campus, has been decked out with new banners ahead of tomorrow's media event, as seen in photos posted by iGeneration.fr. News: Class action filed over iTunes Breaking Bad Season Pass
Apple is being sued by an Ohio man who claims he’s owed $22.99 for not receiving all 16 episodes in the iTunes Season Pass for Breaking Bad — the fifth and final season of which was split into two parts by AMC. How iPhone launches affect the price of Apple stock

Opera Software today released a new browser for the iPad that re-imagines the way users interact with the web.

Instagram to run ads starting next year
You knew it was too good to be true. Instagram has been free to download and use since it first hit the App Store in October of 2010, but now the app will be turning into a conduit for ads in order to turn a profit and make Facebook's billion-dollar acquisition look like a smart deal. Yahoo Debuts Video Content App 'Yahoo Screen', Partners With Viacom [iOS Blog]
Yahoo today announced a new Yahoo Screen app, designed to function as a hub for all of Yahoo’s media content. In the app, which features gesture-based controls that turn a finger into a remote control, users can browse through trending show clips or search for episodes. Marvel bringing Iron Man's JARVIS to iPhone
On September 10th Marvel will release a JARVIS app for iPhone. JARVIS is the AI assistant Tony Stark uses in the Iron Man movies (voiced by Paul Bettany in the films) and the app is being released to celebrate the release of Iron Man 3 on home video. The JARVIS app is a second screen app that allows the user to control the menus on the Iron Man 3 Blu-ray, browse 42 sets of Iron Man armor, and watch other exclusive content.
However, the app does have other functions as well. JARVIS will act as a mini-Siri, allowing you to use Tony Stark's personal AI as you own. Here's what Marvel says you can expect:

Amazon warns users to update iOS Kindle app before installing iOS 7
Readers of Kindle books, take note: Amazon has issued a critical update to its Kindle app on iOS, warning users to install the latest update before upgrading to iOS 7 or risk losing their Kindle libraries. The company pushed out the Kindle 3.9.2 update last night to the App Store. In the app's release notes, the company states:
This is a fix for a Kindle issue with the upcoming iOS 7 OS upgrade that may cause customers to have to re-register and re-download books from Amazon. Please download and install - this is a required update before upgrading to iOS 7.
Without Amazon explicitly stating what the problem is, it's not clear whether the fault lies in the Amazon app itself

Laut StatCounter hat Samsung Apple mittlerweile überholt beim Mobile-Web-Traffic weltweit. Gemessen werden allerdings nicht nur Smartphones, sondern alle internetfähigen Mobiltelefone. Aspyr dropping game support for Snow Leopard
When OS X 10.9 launches this fall, Aspyr will begin dropping support for its games running on OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, the company announced in a blog post this weekend. Aspyr notes that all future releases of its games, as well as any patches and updates for existing titles, won't be supported on OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. Additionally, older titles that receive updates or patches may cease to work on OS X 10.6 in some cases.

Tipp: Schnell Speicherort einer geöffneten Datei anzeigen
Der einfachste Weg herauszufinden, wo ein aktuell geöffnetes Dokument im Dateisystem abgelegt ist: Rechtsklick auf den Titel der Datei, Oben in Mitte der Fensters. Durch den Rechtsklick erscheint die hierarchische Ordner-Reihenfolge des Ablageortes der Datei. Zuoberst in der Liste wird der Ordner gelistet, in welchem sich die Datei befindet, der zweite Listenpunkt ist der darüberliegende Ordner und so weiter bis zur obersten Verzeichnisebene des Volumens oder der Festplatte. Wird eine der Listenpunkte bzw. Ordner angeklickt, öffnet sich der entsprechende Ordner in einem neuen Finder-Fenster.

Tipp: Safari: Falsche URLs aus der automatischen Adresszeilen-Vervollständigung entfernen
Die intelligente Adresszeile von Safari komplettiert begonnene Webseiten-Adressen (URLs) mit gleichen, bereits besuchten oder als Lesezeichen abgespeicherten Adressen. Diese nützliche Funktion möchte man für ein zügiges Surfen nicht missen.
Nervig wird diese Funktion aber dann, wenn man mal auf eine Webseite stösst, deren Adresse nicht mehr aktuell war oder deren Inhalt nicht mehr verfügbar ist.
In diesem Fall erscheint meist eine Fehler-Seite («Error 404») — man muss dann den gewünschten Inhalt über die Webseiten-eigene Suche oder durch manuelles durchforsten der Webseite wiederfinden. Safari hingegen speichert natürlich auch die Fehlerseite in den Surf-Verlauf — womit die «falsche URL» auch bei der automatischen Vervollständigung der Adresszeile zur Auswahl steht. Gleiches gilt für ungültig gewordene (veraltete) Lesezeichen.
Damit man durch die Auto-Vervollständigung nicht immer wieder auf diese falschen URLs aus dem Verlauf stösst, können diese fehlerhaften Adressen selektiv aus

Microsoft launches 'Xbox Music' streaming radio service for iPhone
Just weeks before Apple is expected to release its iTunes Radio streaming music service, Microsoft has released Xbox Music for iPhone. Xbox Music was first unveiled last October and allows users to listen to ad-supported or ad-free music (depending on whether they have a paying subscription or not) on their Microsoft devices, such as Windows Phone, Xbox 360, and Windows PCs.
With today's launch on iPhone and Android phones, Microsoft appears to acknowledge that it thinks Apple's iTunes Radio could become a big player on the streaming music front -- something it hopes to stave off with the expansion of Xbox Music.

Microsoft hat eine Xbox Music App für iPhone und iPod touch im App Store veröffentlicht. Damit können Nutzer auf ihr Xbox-Musik-Archiv zugreifen. Wer einen Xbox Music Pass hat und ein iPhone oder einen iPod touch, der kann ab sofort auch auf dem iOS-Device seine Musik hören. Die Musik ist werbefrei und wird gestreamt. Bericht: OS X Mavericks kommt Ende Oktober
Insider, welche mit Apples Plänen vertraut sein wollen, haben gegenüber 9to5Mac bestätigt, dass die Veröffentlichung von OS X 10.9 für Ende Oktober 2013 geplant sei.
Die finalen Versionen der letzten beiden OS-X-Versionen «Lion» und «Mountain Lion» wurden jeweils einige Tage nach der Veröffentlichung der Q4-Quartalszahlen zum Download freigegeben. Die nächste Präsentation der Quartalszahlen wird höchstwahrscheinlich in der zweiten Oktoberhälfe — wohl am 22. Oktober — stattfinden.
In der letzten Woche gab es Gerüchte, nach welchen OS X Mavericks bereits in wenigen Tagen auf den Markt kommen wird. Bei einigen Textbooks wurden die Systemvoraussetzungen aktualisiert und erstmals tauchte OS X 10.9 und iBooks 1.0 für den Mac als Systemvoraussetzung auf.

15 Prozent leichter, 20 Prozent dünner, eine Stunde extra Durchhaltevermögen: Sony hat eine neue PlayStation Vita angekündigt. In Japan kommt die portable Konsole bereits am 10. Oktober in den Handel: für rund 145 Euro, und zwar in zahlreichen Farben: schwarz, pink, blau, grau, grün und gelb. 1 GB Speicher steht im neuen Modell zur Verfügung, ebenso wie ein microUSB-Port. Der größte Unterschied jedoch ist das Display. Sony wechselt für die neue Vita zu einem LCD-Panel.
Externer Speicher ist - zumindest in Japan - zukünftig billiger zu haben. Die entsprechenden Karten sind zwischen vier und 32 GB deutlich preiswerter. Außerdem gibt es eine neue 64GB-Karte für 80 Euro.

PlayStation 4 coming to Japan February 22nd, three months after US launch
Sony's live-streamed PlayStation event in Japan might have been coupled with an English translation, but there was mixed news for the home crowd, too. Microsoft Launches 'Xbox Music' for iPhone [iOS Blog]
Microsoft today launched its Xbox Music service on iOS and Android, expanding the service to other devices almost a full year after its original introduction. Morgen Abend: Live Ticker zum Special Event von Apple
Für morgen Dienstag-Abend hat Apple zu einem Special Event bei sich zuhause in Cupertino eingeladen. Genau drei Monate nach der letzten und bisher einzigen Keynote des Jahres — WWDC 2013 — wird um 10:00 Uhr Ortszeit (19:00 Uhr unserer Zeit) die Keynote starten. Die Gerüchteküche geht für morgen Abend von einem sehr iOS-lastigen Event aus. Zum einen soll das finale iOS 7 gezeigt und dessen Veröffentlichung angekündigt werden. Das Highlight des Abends sollen aber neue iPhones sein. Eine neue iPhone-Generation «iPhone 5S» sowie eine günstige iPhone-Variante namens «iPhone 5C» sollen vorgestellt und Ende September im Handel erscheinen — so zumindest der einstimmige Tenor aus der Gerüchteküche. Ebenfalls angekündigt werden könnte der Lancierungs-Termin des Musik-Streamingservices «iTunes Radio» von Apple.
