BBM has gained 20 million new active users since the app was released
The troubled rollout of BlackBerry's BBM messaging app for iOS, coupled with its recent business issues, had some pundits doomsaying about the company's future. We may have had a few thoughts on the matter here at TUAW. But ultimately the only opinion that matters is the customer base, and it is happy -- and growing.
Since the rollout of BBM for iOS and Android, BlackBerry has gained 20 million active users for a total of 80 million users. Andrew Bocking, EVP of BBM, has this to say about

Southwest, Dish offer free iPad entertainment to travelers
If you're a frequent flier who hasn't yet invested in a tablet of your own, Southwest has you covered: As part of a larger partnership between the airline and television provider Dish, Southwest will now not only provide in-flight entertainment for passengers who have iOS devices of their own, but will now also offer iPads to those without their own compatible smartphone or tablet.
The tablets -- which are the iPad 2 model -- will be available for passengers to "check out" at kiosks within terminals at Chicago-Midway, Denver and Oakland airports. If you're flying between any of these cities on a WiFi-enabled flight, you'll be able to loan an iPad and enjoy a selection of live and on-demand content for free during your trip.

A look back at Apple's 2013 acquisitions
During Apple's earnings conference call yesterday, Tim Cook noted that Apple during the fiscal 2013 year acquired a total of 15 companies.
Historically, Apple's acquisition strategy has focused on snatching up smaller companies that house either personnel or technology that clearly fit into Apple's product roadmap. In other words, Apple doesn't acquire companies merely because they have cool technology or because they happen to be a passing fad. Apple's acquisitions are strategic.

Apple Hit With Class-Action Lawsuit Over Failing 27" iMac Displays
An Idaho man is suing Apple under California's consumer protection laws because the display on his 27-inch iMac failed 18 months after he bought it -- notably outside the twelve-month standard warranty period, reports GigaOm. Oculus Rift Virtual Reality Headset Coming to iOS Devices
Oculus VR is developing a mobile version of its Oculus Rift headset that will be compatible with iOS devices, according to CEO Brendan Iribe who announced the news during VentureBeat's GamesBeat 2013 conference. The judgment is a continuation of the battle between Apple and the society of authors, composers, and music publishers' (SACEM) in France. 92% of iTunes Radio users still listening to Pandora
On September 23, Apple issued a press release announcing that over 11 million unique users had already tuned into iTunes Radio. Yesterday during Apple's earnings conference call, Tim Cook said that that number had risen to 20 million unique users.
That's not too bad considering that Apple has barely been in the Internet music streaming business for even a month now. On top of that, Apple has an unparalleled advantage in that iTunes Radio is baked right into iOS 7, providing millions of new iOS users with a music streaming experience right out of the box, no downloading required.

At the time, we weren't all that impressed with the device or its user interface. Our big complaint was that the software was quite confusing, requiring access to both a local app and a web interface to accomplish certain tasks. Frankreich verurteilt Apple zu Millionenstrafe
Ein Gericht in Paris hat Apple dazu verurteilt, den französischen Autoren 12 Millionen Euro an Copyright-Gebühren auszuzahlen. Die Gebühren beziehen sich auf die Verkäufe des iPads für die Zeitspanne zwischen März und Dezember 2012. Für das Jahr 2011 erstritt sich die Organisation «SACEM», die Autoren, Komponisten und Verlage vertritt, bereits eine Entschädigung von 5 Millionen Euro. Die Organisation fordert insgesamt die Zahlung von 30 Millionen Euro.
Die «Copyright-Gebühr» wird in Frankreich für alle Geräte erhoben, die schützbares Material anzeigen können. Mozilla hat ein Pilotprojekt gestartet, das Geräten ohne GPS eine (grobe) Positionsbestimmung ermöglichen soll, oder auch als Ergänzung funktionieren kann, wenn der GPS-Empfang gerade wackelig/ungenau ist. Der Mozilla Location Service basiert auf den gesammelten Angaben über Funknetze (öffentliches WiFi, Mobilfunk), die mittels einer Android-App von Freiwilligen generiert werden. Details aus der Q4/2013-Quartalszahlen-Konferenz
Apple hat am gestrigen Abend die Zahlen für das vierte Fiskalquartal 2013 bekanntgegeben. Zwischen Juni und September erzielte Apple einen Umsatz von 37.472 Milliarden US-Dollar und einen Gewinn von 7.5 Milliarden US-Dollar. Die Märkte reagierten zurückhaltend auf die Zahlen. Die Aktie von Apple stieg im Vorfeld der Bekanntgabe im Verlaufe des gestrigen Handelstages um 0.74 Prozent. Kaum wurden die Zahlen präsentiert, brach der Kurs zuerst um 4 Prozent ein, bevor er kurz ins Plus stieg um danach erneut in den negativen Bereich zu rutschen. Aktuell notiert der das Wertpapier bei einem Minus von rund 1.2 Prozent.

Samsung's share grows while Apple's declines in Q3 smartphone market
Samsung Electronics continued to dominate the smartphone market in the third quarter, which also saw quarterly shipments cross 250 million for the first time, according to research firm Strategy Analytics.The South Korean electronics giant shipped more than two times the number of smartphones shipped by its second-placed competitor Apple in the quarter. Samsung shipped over 88 million smartphones in the quarter, up 55 percent from the same quarter last year, to get a record 35 percent share, Strategy Analytics said Monday.Apple's market share, however, dipped to 13.4 percent from 15.6 percent in the same quarter a year ago. Tim Cook hat sich nach der Präsentation der Quartalszahlen in einer Mail an die Mitarbeiter des Unternehmens gewendet. Apples Produktpalette sei niemals zuvor besser gewesen und Apple starte mit «unglaublichen neuen Produkten» in den Weihnachts-Verkauf, wie Tim Cook in der Mail schrieb.

Apple earnings calls always create a bit of a three-ring circus on the web. Everyone tries to read into every last boast and stutter out of the mouths of Apple management and predict the future.

Apple's first retail store in Brazil may open as soon as March 2014
With over 400 Apple retail stores worldwide, you might be surprised to know that Apple hasn't yet expanded its retail chain into Latin America. According to a recent report from 9to5Mac, however, that may be poised to change in just a few months.
Mark Gurman reports that Apple is planning to open up a retail store in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil by March of 2014. Interestingly enough, the report claims that Apple is aiming to relocate some seasoned Apple retail employees down to Brazil to help get things up and running.

Disney show to premier on iPad, Kindle Fire
The Disney Company has taken the bold step to release "Sheriff Callie's Wild West" on iPads and Kindles before it makes it to the more traditional Disney Channel and Disney Junior outlets.
The New York Times reports that Disney feels there are enough kids using tablets that the jump is logical.
"This is an entirely new approach for us," said Nancy Kanter, executive vice president and general manager of Disney Junior Worldwide, which is aimed at children age 2 to 7. "We have been amazed at how quickly kids have embraced this new technology. We're talking billions of minutes spent watching."

Japanese iOS game lets you beat up perverts, because why not?
Japanese culture is sometimes a bit confusing for westerners, and a new iOS game from the Land of the Rising Sun is a perfect example of that. It's called Punishment Punch Girl, and there's a good chance you've never seen anything like it on your own regional App Store -- unless you're reading this from Japan, in which case you obviously have.

iLife, iWork and OS X Updates Will Continue to Be Free in the Future [Mac Blog]
During today's financial results conference call for the third calendar and fourth fiscal quarter of 2013, Apple CFO Peter Oppenheimer indicated Apple will continue to offer iWork, iLife, and OS X for free for the foreseeable future. When OS X Mavericks was released last Tuesday, Apple announced that for the first time ever, OS X system updates would be available to customers at no charge.
