Stadtrat von Cupertino gibt einstimmig den Bau des Apple Campus 2 frei
Nach einer sechsstündigen Sitzung hat der Stadtrat Cupertinos einstimmig dem Bau des Apple Campus 2 zugestimmt. Wenn innerhalb von zehn Tagen kein Einspruch erhoben wird, kann mit den Bauarbeiten begonnen werden. Am 15. Oktober traf sich Cupertinos Stadtrat, um über den Bau des Apple Campus 2 abzustimmen. Nach einer sechsstündigen Diskussion, mit viel Zuspruch aber auch Stimmen der Besorgnis, wurde einstimmig für den Bau votiert. Der Beschluss soll großen Applaus von den Anwesenden geerntet haben. Wenn innerhalb der nächsten zehn Kalendertage keine Petition dagegen eingeht, darf und wird Apple mit den Abrissarbeiten des ehemaligen HP Campus beginnen. Die formelle Genehmigung

Apple reduziert Produktionsmenge des iPhone 5c und steigert iPhone 5s Aufträge

Apple Environmental Chief Lisa Jackson Driving Sustainability Efforts
Former EPA chief Lisa Jackson, hired earlier this year to head up Apple's environmental efforts, told a sustainability conference that she plans to get Apple to use energy more efficiently and with cleaner power in the company's data centers and other buildings. According to GigaOm, Jackson said "Tim Cook didn't hire Lisa Jackson to be quiet and keep the status quo. We understand our responsibility and we do care." Jackson talked about the challenges of pushing and developing sustainability projects within Apple. One of them is the challenge of collecting solid data and being able to measure projects and their success rates. Ireland aims to close tax loophole Apple has exploited
If the Irish government's plans come together, the tax loophole that Apple, Microsoft, Google and other companies have been using for years will be closed up. Reuters and other news services are reporting that the Irish Government intends to close the loophole, although another will remain.
Last May, a US Senate investigation revealed that Apple had sheltered billions in assets by declaring companies registered in the Irish City of Cork as not tax resident in any country.
Michael Noonan, the Irish Finance Minister declared Tuesday that he was going to make it against Irish law for an Irish-registered company to have no tax domicile anywhere.

Oyster E-book Subscription Service Now Available on iPad [iOS Blog]
Oyster, an e-book subscription service that originally launched on a limited basis for the iPhone last month, has been expanded to the iPad and is now available for all users. Described as Netflix for e-books, Oyster offers access to more than 100,000 e-books for a $9.95 monthly fee. The service is currently limited to iOS and is growing rapidly, with additional titles being added on a regular basis. Oyster for iPad functions similarly to other e-book reading apps like iBooks, allowing users to select content from a dedicated library that can be read within the app. Pages are turned via scrolling, and it incorporates a darker night time reading mode. The app functions in both landscape and portrait mode, and books that are downloaded can be synced between devices.

Reported sensor issues with Apple’s iPhone 5s are being caused by a new and allegedly undercalibrated accelerometer in the device, according to a new blog post. Wall Street Journal: Apple cutting iPhone 5c orders
The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Apple has told two of its manufacturing partners to ramp down production on the iPhone 5c.
Apple told its two assemblers, Taiwan-based Pegatron Corp. and Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., that it would cut this quarter's orders for the iPhone 5C, the people familiar with the situation said. Pegatron, which analysts said assembles two-thirds of iPhone 5Cs, was told the order would be cut by less than 20%, a person familiar with the matter said. Hon Hai, which assembles the remaining 5Cs, was told the order would be cut by a third, two people familiar with the matter said.

Intel Delays Next-Generation Broadwell Chips Until 2014 Due to Manufacturing Issue
Intel yesterday confirmed that it is delaying the production of its next-generation Broadwell processors on account of a manufacturing issue. Intel CEO Brian Krzanich announced the news during Intel's earnings call, stating that production on the chips will begin during the first quarter of 2014 (via PCWorld). Intel's Broadwell chips are designed to be the successor to its existing Haswell chips, manufactured on a 14-nanometer process as opposed to Haswell's current 22-nanometer process. New Accelerometer Supplier Could Be Causing Incorrect iPhone 5s Level and Compass Measurements
A new supplier for the accelerometer part in the iPhone 5s could be causing incorrect level and compass measurements in the new device, an issue that was first noticed earlier this month. RealityCap CEO Eagle Jones read into the Chipworks teardown of the iPhone 5s (via Gizmodo) and noticed that the phone uses the Bosch Sensortech BMA220 as its accelerometer. Agile Tortoise releases Terminology 3 for the iPhone and iPad
Agile Tortoise is back again with a fresh, new version of its Terminology dictionary and thesaurus app for iOS. The latest changes bring the app to version 3 and is a complete rewrite of the app for iOS 7.

Fixya is a Q&A website that compiles fix-it requests for a variety of items from cars and chainsaws to routers and monitors. Recently the site turned its attention to mobile browsers, looking through a total of 61,582 different help requests for the category to determine which browser had the best usability score. YouTube for iOS updated with Wi-Fi quality selection streaming
Google has been busy pushing out updates for its major iOS apps. First was the update to Google Maps yesterday, and the YouTube app gets a change. This is the app's first update since iOS 7 launched, so it includes the expected "iOS 7 compatibility improvements" as well as Accessibility improvements. However, the big new (and much requested) feature is the ability to choose a clip's video quality over Wi-Fi.
This works in much the same way as choosing a playback quality in a desktop browser. Your options will depend on the available resolution(s), but for most clips you should see anywhere from 240p all the way up to 1080p.

After Apple filed a new motion for sanctions against Samsung for unlawfully obtaining sensitive information about its 2011 patent license agreement with Nokia, Judge Lucy Koh has denied three Samsung motions intended to slow the investigation, reports FOSS Patents. Controls+ brings a little bit of iOS 7 Control Center to OS X
Since the first day that I laid eyes on iOS 7 in June, one of my favorite features has been Control Center. Let's face it -- it's much easier and quicker to just swipe up from the bottom of my iPad or iPhone screen to get access to frequently used controls than to either go into settings or launch an app. Now It's About Time Products is introducing Controls+ (US0.99 intro price through October 18, $4.99 after that point) to the world in hopes that they can provide the same convenience as Control Center to Mac OS X users.

Das Update mit der Bezeichnung «Java für OS X 2013-005 1.0» bietet eine verbesserte Sicherheit, Zuverlässigkeit und Kompatibilität bei der Aktualisierung von Java SE 6 auf 1.6.0_65. Das Update steht Nutzern ab OS X 10.7 zum Download zur Verfügung. Bei diesem Update handelt es sich um eine von Apple bereitgestellte Aktualisierung von Java. Über die Webseite von Oracle kann Java 7 heruntergeladen werden.
Zeitgleich hat Apple auch zwei neue Druckertreiber-Pakete zum Download freigegeben. Square releases Square Cash iPhone app
Square has released its new Square Cash iPhone app that allows you to send money to anyone with an email account. The iPhone app is a companion app to the new Square Cash service that lets you send money simply by typing an email.
Anyone may compose a new email to the person they want to send money to, putting a dollar amount in the subject line (for example, "$50") and CC the message to "cash@square.com." If it's your first time sending money, you'll then get an email with a link to where you can store your debit card info. You recipient will get the money within two business days.

Usability: Schlechte Noten für iOS 7
Die Usability-Experten der «Nielsen Norman Group» haben in einer Untersuchung iOS 7 genauer unter die Lupe genommen. Während wenige Neuerungen Anklang fanden, fielen viele Neuerungen des neuen mobilen Betriebssystems von Apple bei den Experten durch.

Die Experten würdigen in ihrer Analyse Apples Wechsel von der bisherigen Design-Philosophie zum sogenannten «Flat Design». Mit den neuen Gestaltungsrichtlinien hat Apple Standards, die zum Teil über Jahre gefestigt worden sind, durch neue Bedienkonzepte ersetzt. Apple ist im Bereich des Flat-Designs allerdings ein Nachzügler. Google, und insbesondere Microsoft, haben ihre mobilen Betriebssysteme bereits zuvor für das «flachere» Design optimiert.

Apple Cutting iPhone 5c Production at Two Major Suppliers
Apple has notified two of its major iPhone 5c suppliers that it is reducing orders of the smartphone for the fourth quarter, reports The Wall Street Journal. Taiwanese assemblers Pegatron and Foxconn (also known as Hon Hai Precision Industry Co.) were given notice by Apple that fourth quarter production of the device would be slowed, with the former being told orders would be cut by less than 20% and the latter being told that orders would be cut by one-third of the original production. Steve Jobs Ex-Freundin Chrisann Brennan veröffentlicht am 29. Oktober ein Buch über ihre fünfjährige Beziehung in den 70er-Jahren mit Steve Jobs. Die New York Post hat erste Auszüge aus dem Werk mit dem Titel «The Bite in the Apple: A Memoir of My Life with Steve Jobs» veröffentlicht.
Es dürfte kaum zufällig sein, dass sich unter den zuerst veröffentlichten Buch-Ausschnitten auch Ausführungen über das Sex-Leben der beiden befinden. In den Auszügen beschreibt Brennan die «einzigartigen Nächte», welche sie mit dem Apple-Gründer verbringen durfte. Steve Jobs' ex-girlfriend Chrisann Brennan writes memoir about her relationship with Apple's co-founder
Apple's late co-founder Steve Jobs has had another book written about him, this time by ex-girlfriend and mother of his first child, Chrisann Brennan. Jobs dated Brennan on and off for five years after meeting in 1972 when they were both studying at Homestead HS in California. They split up in 1977, but Brennan was already pregnant with Jobs' first child, his daughter Lisa. Despite a paternity test that proved Jobs was Lisa's father in 1979, Jobs still denied that he was her father, telling Time magazine that "28 per cent of the male population in the United States could be the father" in 1983. He later accepted that Lisa was his daughter and went on to form a relationship with her. Apples Tochtergesellschaften in Irland bald nicht mehr staatenlos
Irland hat im Hinblick auf die Budget-Beratungen für das Jahr 2014 entschieden, eine Steuerbestimmung zu ändern, dank welcher sich internationale Unternehmen zu «staatenlosen» erklären konnten. Aufgrund unterschiedlicher Bestimmungen zwischen der irländischen Steuergesetzgebung und der US-Gesetzgebung war es Apple bislang möglich, die Tochtergesellschaften so zu organisieren, dass sich der Steuersitz in keinem der beiden Länder befinden konnte. Während Irland auf den Ort der Verwaltung abstellte, um die Steuerpflicht zu begründen, wird in den USA auf den Sitz des Unternehmens abgestellt. Da beispielsweise Apples Tochtergesellschaft «Apple Operations International» aus den USA geführt wird, aber in Irland registriert ist, entsteht ein steuerfreier Raum.

Apple on Tuesday sent out a notice to developers asking them to prepare for the launch of OS X Mavericks by testing their apps with the Golden Master of the new operating system before submitting them to the Mac App Store for review. The note reads: "Make sure your app takes advantage of the great new features in OS X Mavericks when the world's most advanced desktop operating system becomes available to millions of customers later this fall. App Store: Entwickler sollen Mavericks kompatible Apps einreichen
Apple hat in einer Mail Entwickler von Mac Apps dazu aufgefordert, möglichst schnell die für OS X Mavericks kompatiblen Apps im Mac App Store einzureichen. Damit verbleibt Apple noch genügend Zeit, die entwickelten Apps zu testen und rechtzeitig zur bevorstehenden Lancierung von OS X Mavericks freizugeben.
Apple hat am 4. Oktober die Golden-Master-Vorabversion von OS X Mavericks veröffentlicht. Falls keine gravierenden Mängel mehr auftauchen sollten, handelt es sich bei diesem Build um die finale Version des Betriebssystems.
Apple hat noch kein offizielles Veröffentlichungsdatum für OS X Mavericks bekannt gegeben. Genauere Informationen sind am gestern angekündeten Special Event vom 22. Oktober zu erwarten.

Twitter updates TweetDeck for Mac
Twitter has updated TweetDeck, its OS X app for power-users. The app makes it easy for users to manage multiple Twitter accounts, sift through and search tweets, and track real-time conversations. It's frequently used by social media administrators whose sole job it is to monitor and tweet under a company's Twitter profile.

Apple to Hold Simultaneous Satellite Event in London for October iPad Unveilings
Earlier today Apple sent out invitations to its October 22 media event, which is expected to focus on the fifth-generation iPad and the iPad mini 2. The event will be held at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco, but as it did with the iPhone launch, Apple plans to stream the proceedings to a separate London satellite event that international media members have been invited to attend (via 9to5Mac). Seene is a clever and free iPhone app that lets you capture an object or person in 3 dimensions. It's not the 3D you get from taking 2 images that are horizontally displaced, but instead you move left and right, up and down while the camera is running, which produces an image that you can explore from different angles by either moving your phone or swiping your finger on the image.

Google today rolled out a Google Maps for iOS update that features enhanced navigation options along with language support for both Arabic and Hebrew.
