Apple releases OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.5
Apple has just released OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.5 via Software Update. The update offers a number of fixes including ones for Mail, Xsan, and AFP file transfers. The full release notes:

Readdle ships Calendars 5, smart calendar for iOS

The iPhone's M7 Motion coprocessor and Maps
Apple's M7 Motion coprocessor has some powerful capabilities that will really enhance mapping on the iPhone. 9to5 Mac points out some copy on Apple's site that suggest at least one way Maps will benefit from the new hardware:
"M7 knows when you're walking, running, or even driving. For example, Maps switches from driving to walking turn-by-turn navigation if, say, you park and continue on foot. iOS app from US Immigrations and Customs Enforcement designed to hunt down child predators
US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has released an app that it hopes will engage the public in helping hunt down child predators. Operation Predator (free) is designed for the public to help ICE Homeland Security Investigations agents identify and locate suspected child predators.
The front page of the app provides two large buttons for submitting tips by phone or online, and there's a scrolling list of current alerts with photos and names. In addition, the app provides news about the latest investigations and arrests, and will provide alerts when new suspects are being sought.

Apple ID now required to set Genius Bar appointment online
Apple has implemented a slight but significant change to the way it books Genius Bar appointments online. Now folks wishing to make such an appointment must have a working Apple ID and password. Previously, users could simply enter in basic identifiable information like their name and email address in order to set up an appointment.

NASA's Voyager 1 escapes our sun's warm embrace, becomes the first manmade device to enter interstellar space
NASA satellite Voyager 1, at 36 years young, is the first manmade object in recorded history to enter interstellar space. iPhone 5s reappears on GameStop trade-in page, joined by the 5c
GameStop jumped the gun in late August by (perhaps mistakenly) putting the unannounced iPhone 5s on its device trade-in page, complete with offers for cash trade and in-store credit. The page was pulled after we first pointed it out, but now that the iPhone 5s is officially official (yeah, I said it) the company has brought it back. Oh, and the iPhone 5c has popped up as well.
The prices for the iPhone 5s appear to be in line with what we got a sneak peak of back in August, though the Verizon version of the device -- which wasn't available in the early price leak -- is worth less. T-Mobile has announced its pricing for Apple's new iPhones, offering the iPhone 5c with no down payment and the iPhone 5s for a $99 down payment. For the South by Southwest (SXSW) music/film/interactive festival in 2011, Apple built a temporary pop-up store so that attendees could purchase the second-generation iPad between conference talks or concerts. Now professional thorn-in-the-side-of-Apple Sonny Dickson has posted an internal Apple video on YouTube detailing the construction of the store.
It's amazing watching how the construction crews were able to create a fully-functional Apple Store in a short amount of time, complete with decorations to make it appear just like one of the permanent retail facilities.

Shipment volumes of the display panels used in Apple's new iPhone 5s are expected to reach 10-15 million units in the third quarter of 2013, according to industry sources cited by Digitimes. New FCC documents spotted by Phone Scoop have given us a closer look at what could be LG's rumored Nexus 5 handset. Apple Boosts iPhone 5s Battery Capacity by 10%, iPhone 5c by 5% Over iPhone 5
At its media event earlier this week, Apple noted that it had increased the battery capacity of the iPhone 5c relative to the iPhone 5, and the company's tech specs show that users can expect longer for battery life on both the iPhone 5s and 5c for certain tasks. Verizon and Sprint have both announced that pre-orders for the new iPhone 5c will begin at 12:01 a.m. PST/3 a.m. EST On Friday, September 13th. On its launch, Apple announced the iPhone 5c would begin pre-order sales on the 13th, but it has yet to announce a time those pre-orders will begin. UK carriers ready for iPhone 5c and 5s, but mum on details
In the wake of Apple's iPhone 5s and 5c debut, several wireless carriers in the UK have announced that they'll be selling the California-born duo on September 20th. EE's Orange and T-Mobile, along with O2, Vodafone, and Three are all on board to carry both phones from day one.
None of the carriers currently have plan data available, though as Engadget reports, O2 and EE have confirmed that both the EE Swap and O2 Refresh upgrade programs can be used with the new handsets.

Auf YouTube ist ein internes Apple-Video aufgetaucht, welches die Entstehung eines Apple Stores zeigt. Das Video zeigt aber nicht einen normalen Apple Store, sondern der «Pop-Up» Apple Stores, welcher Apple extra zum «South by Southwest»-Festival Anfang 2011 errichtet hatte.
Pop-Up-Stores sind provisorische Verkaufsflächen, welche kurzfristig an einem Ort aufgezogen werden und später wieder abgerissen werden. Anlässlich des SXSW-Festivals baute Apple einen solchen Pop-Up-Store in Austin, Texas. Das Film- und Musik-Festival gehört zu den grössten der Welt. Gleichzeitig mit dem Festival fand auch der Verkaufsstart des iPad 2 statt.

Vodafone has confirmed that hackers have accessed its servers in Germany, gaining access to personal information and bank details of approximately two million customers. Apple äussert sich detaillierter zur «Touch ID»
Apple hat sich gegenüber dem Wall Street Journal detaillierter zum Fingerabdruck-Leser des iPhone 5s geäussert. Die als «Touch ID» bezeichnete Funktion wird erstmals im iPhone 5s eingesetzt und ersetzt bei einigen Funktionen die Eingabe des Pin-Codes. Der Nutzer kann somit das iPhone mit dem Fingerabdruck entsperren oder den Kauf eines iTunes-Artikels mit dem Fingerabdruck bestätigen. Apple erlaubt Apps von Drittanbietern bislang keinen Zugriff auf die biometrischen Daten der Nutzer. Damit muss man bei diesen Apps weiterhin Passwörter eingeben. DEVONthink: Import von Pocket-Artikeln
Die Übernahme von neuen Artikeln, die in Pocket gemerkt wurden, ist einfach: DEVONthink liest den Feed ein, der Feed wird per Applescript in einzelne Web Archives umgewandelt und derart in DEVONthink abgespeichert. Die Skriptlogik entspricht der, die ich für den IMDB-Import verwende und dort beschrieben habe, nur ohne die Bewertungen, was in wenigen Minuten eingerichtet war. Vodafone Deutschland: Bankdaten von zwei Millionen Kunden gestohlen

Wie Vodafone im hauseigenen Blog bekannt gibt, war das Unternehmen Ziel eines kriminellen Angriffs auf einen seiner Server in Deutschland. Der TechCruch-Kolumnist MG Siegler will aus ungenannter Quelle von der baldigen Veröffentlichung einer neuen Version von Apple TV erfahren haben. Apple soll bereits im Verlaufe des kommenden Monats eine neue Version der Settop-Box auf den Markt bringen, wie der Kolumnist überzeugt ist. Noch in diesem Monat erwartet Siegler zudem ein Software-Update für Apple TV.
Über welche technischen Spezifikationen eine überarbeitete Version von Apple TV verfügen soll, dazu äusserte sich Siegler nicht. Möglicherweise arbeitet Apple an einem eigenen Fernseher sowie einer Weiterentwicklung der Settop-Box. Gleichzeitig könnte eine künftige Version von Apple TV über eine Gesten-Steuerung verfügen, wie sie bereits bei Microsofts Kinect zur Anwendung kommt.

AAPL mit starkem Minus — Icahn schlägt zu
Am gestrigen ersten Tag nach dem Special Event von Apple ist die Aktie von Apple unter starken Druck geraten. Während der Kurs am Dienstag nach dem Special Event bei über 494 US-Dollar schloss, eröffnete die Apple-Aktie am Mittwoch mit einem Kurs von 467.01 US-Dollar. iPhone 5c Pre-Orders to Begin at 12:01 AM Pacific Time on Friday, September 13
While Apple announced at yesterday's media event that pre-orders for the iPhone 5c will begin on Friday, September 13, the company has not yet specified at what time it will begin taking orders. Information from U.S. carrier partners Verizon and Sprint indicates, however, that the pre-orders should go live at roughly midnight Pacific Time on Friday morning. Given that Apple and its U.S. carrier partners typically begin pre-orders at the same time and the timing published by Verizon and Sprint is in line with that seen for the past several iPhone releases, it seems likely that the coordinated launch will once again take place at that time. PhotoPresenter from Boinx Software is a new US$0.99 app that lets you display your photos from an iOS device to a big screen via a cable or using AirPlay to an AppleTV.

Apple yesterday announced that its fleet of next-gen iPhones will hit store shelves on September 20. For most people, this means that they simply have lace up their shoes and head on over to their local Apple retail store pick one up. Apple's iPad to join Disney's 'Little Mermaid' in theaters in worst idea ever
Disney has announced plans to rerelease The Little Mermaid to theaters on September 20 in a move that should fill any fan of classic animation with glee. Of course it's not just a rerelease, or we wouldn't be talking about it on TUAW. No, this rerelease is dubbed The Little Mermaid: Second Screen Live, and it unofficially redefines "watching a movie" as "playing with your iPad in the theater."
The rereleased film has been synced with an iPad app that gives users the ability to play games, sing-a-long to the movie (not such a terrible idea for kids), and interact with the characters. It's a brilliant idea for home video, especially since at home you won't be paying a premium price for each of your children to play with an app while not watching
