Acer Aspire 3811TZ and 3811TZG get Greenpeace stamp of approval

So Acer's new Aspire 3811TZ and Aspire 3811TZG may not be puke-green like Sony's VAIO W Eco, but that doesn't mean they aren't some of the greenest -- as in eco-friendly -- laptops out there. Part of the company's thin-and-light Timeline series, the two 13.3-inch laptops have been named by Greenpeace as being completely free of those bad-for-the-environment materials, including PVC (polyvinyl chloride) and BFR (brominated flame retardants). Powered by Intel ULV Core 2 Duo CPUs, they are more power-efficient than most and last longer on a charge. There doesn't seem to be an official statement from Acer on availability and price on these models, but we assume like the rest of the Timeline bunch there will be models both north and south of a g

Jan. 27th event to include trio of products?

Apple has a three-pronged focus in mind for its January 27th press event, according to Fox News. A source at Apple is said to claim that in addition to a long-awaited tablet device, the company will probably spend its time on the iPhone 4.0 firmware, alongside an updated iLife suite. Apple has often launched iLife upgrades at the beginning of a year.

Next week's Apple event to be iLife / iPhone OS 4.0 / tablet trifecta?

We're realistically no closer to knowing the outcome of next week's Apple event than we were a week, a year, or a decade ago, but rumors are obviously congealing around the mythical tablet that users, fans, and media have all but willed into existence recently -- and our buddy Clayton Morris says that's indeed a part of the story. Morris reports having spoken with a source at Apple this morning -- prior to the company's invites going out, interestingly -- who said that the event would focus on a new version of iLife, iPhone OS 4.0, and naturally, the tablet. Loosely speaking, you can see how

Win Mobile 7 may get Media Edition, HTC and LG flagships

Microsoft will launch Windows Mobile 7 with a version rebranding and two very high end devices, a potentially revelatory rumor says today. The OS would be rebranded as Windows Phone 7 and would be split into two releases different than today's. Its highlight would be a Media Edition that would have Zune-like elements in its media player as well as deep tie-ins with Microsoft, such as in-browser Silverlight, Mediaroom for IPTV and at least the social side of Xbox Live.

Review: Rockstar Games Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars

As with the prior GTA releases, Chinatown Wars is a relentlessly thuggish, deliberately offensive video game—properly rated for 17-year-old and more mature players, it makes more references to drugs, prostitutes, murders, and various other illegal activities in its first few minutes than literally any iPhone game we’ve previously seen, and uses expletives as generously as sugar on Frosted Flakes. Not surprisingly, your character is quickly…

The size of 22" makes us believe that there does not yet exist a satisfactory touch screen in 21,5" and 16:9, that makes us think that this new iMac, if it exists will take again the old format 16:10.

Windows Mobile 7 megarumor: LG Apollo and HTC Obsession running flagship '720p' specs, Zune Phone Experience

Alright, this is some wild, heavy stuff, but the folks at WMExperts have compiled what they believe to be true about Windows Mobile 7, including a whole bunch of previously undisclosed info and even a couple of flagship phones. We can't vouch for the rumors, but there's a ring of truth to plenty of it, and most of the rest of it we want to be true. First off, Microsoft is approaching the revision with two flavors: Windows Phone Seven Business Edition, and Windows Phone Seven Media Edition. The former is a stripped down OS that will allow OEM overlays like HTC's Sense UI, and includes lower minimum specs -- though a WVGA "minimum" is nothing to get angry about. Meanwhile, it sounds like the Media Edition is the quasi

BearExtender n3 grabs WiFi from afar

We've seen a few WiFi extenders in our day, but the BearExtender n3 has a few critical advantages over the rest: it's cheap, effective, and, uh, legal. The $45 external WiFi adapter for Macs was developed by Rolan Saekow, a Berkeley grad who wanted access to the campus "Airbears" network from wherever he was -- and it seems to do the trick, as TUAW's informal testing revealed stronger signals and higher throughput when using the BearExtender over internal WiFI. Sure, it's a little bulky, but that just makes you look hardc

There’s life beyond the tablet - Apple also intends introduction of a giant touch-enabled all-in-one PC (iMac?) this year, those ubiquitous reports from Taiwan tell us teasingly. Sure - everyone’s already going ga-ga on the perhaps set for launch this month 10-inch Apple tablet (or tablets), but Apple’s game to reach out and touch stretches all across its CE ecosystem, it seems. “Apple reportedly plans to launch a 22-inch touch-enabled all-in-one PC in 2010, in addition to the current non-touch 21.5- and 27-inch iMacs,” according to a Chinese-language Commercial Times report. Production of the new touchy-feely 22-inch iMac will be given to Quanta, with Taiwan’s Sintek Photronic supplying touchscreen panels, the paper noted. Looks like Apple has a much wider vision t

Apple plans 22-inch touch-enabled iMac for 2010 - report

Price of DDR3 Raising Up... so Far

Due to the economic slowdown as well as the decision taken by most manufacturers to stop production lines, the price of RAM increased over the last month by 20%. If this could affect the price of hardware models, this growing curve should not continue further. Indeed, according to Digitimes, RAM manufacturers will switch over the coming months, lines producing DDR2 modules to DDR3, increasing the volume of production so prices should then stabilize or decrease. For owners of DDR2-based hardware, it might well be time to purchase new modules if you want to increase your RAM amount.

XCM Fire takes the "light" out of light gun, still looks sufficiently violent

XCM's Fire gun controller for the PS3 might look like something you use for aiming at precise segments on your screen that happen to contain the heads, torsos or legs of your enemies; you know, like a light gun. Instead the controller is a motion-sensing affair, with dual analog controls along for the ride -- more of an augmentation of traditional console controls than a replacement. We've seen this fail miserably before (see: SIXAXSIS), but we're willing to give XCM the benefit of the doubt. The Fire controller is supposedly "70 percent done," and there are a couple demo videos after the break. We still want a GameGun.
