FTC investigating Intel-Nvidia dispute
Bloomberg is already starting to get some mileage out fo their Businessweek purchase. Today Arik Hessendahl reports for the new company that Intel and Nvidia's squabbles will now be looked at by the US Federal Trade Commission.
The FTC is trying to determine whether a lawsuit filed by Intel earlier this year is an effort to disrupt Nvidia’s business, one person said.
Intel sued Nvidia in February of this year after negotiations broke down over terms of a 2004 agreement that gave Nvidia access to some of Intel’s technology. Nvidia counter-sued a month later, accusing Intel of breach of contract.

Apple looking to buy Lala, get into streaming music?
There's no deal yet, but Bloomberg and All Things Digital are reporting "confirmed" buyouts talks between Apple and music-streaming service Lala. If it goes down, the deal would potentially bring free music streaming to Apple's iTunes empire, but we're assuming Steve's less interested in integrating Lala's current service than he is in its talent, back-end technology, and content licensing deals. Intel wants to share the memory between the CPU and GPU
One of the largest stumbling blocks to generate a significant increase in the performances of the GPGPU, and more generally with calculations shared between the main frame and the graphics processor is related to the fact that it is necessary to transfer the data from the main memory of the machine to that of the graphics card where they will be treated and then the data is transferred in the opposite direction so that it can be used.Intel, which continues to work on its Larrabee project decided to solve this problem with an innovative technique. They will create a virtual memory shared between the two elements and in which each unit will be able to pick according to its needs without having to pass through the PCI-Express bus, a true bottle neck. We do not know yet the details of the procedure, but it seems very promising on paper, we are waiting to see what Larrabee will give us, however it continues to be delayed. News: DLO launches WallDock charger for iPod or iPhone
DLO has released a new wall charger that lets you charge your iPod or iPhone without the need for cables. The WallDock is a wall-mounted charger with a built-in dock for iPod or iPhone. The WallDock ($25) features a pivoting, 30-pin dock allowing any iPod or iPhone to rest against the wall for support and claims to charge in less amount of time than other standard, less powered chargers.

Suit charges Apple with violating camera patents
Apple has been hit with a lawsuit over its use of digital camera technology, according to reports. The case is being processed through the US District Court for Delaware, and specifically charges Apple with violating four different patents in the manufacture of the iPhone. The plaintiff, St. Clair Intellectual Property Consultants, is demanding damage compensation and a jury trial.

Apple very near acquisition of Lala?
Apple may be on the verge of buying out streaming music site Lala, a leak indicated on Friday. The iTunes operator is understood to be in "very advanced" negotiations and may have even already agreed to all terms with only a formal signing needed to complete the deal. None of the companies involved have commented on the CNET rumor.

FTC moseys into Intel / NVIDIA dispute
The dispute between Intel and NVIDIA has already reached legendary proportions, and it looks like now even the FTC is getting involved as a result of its longstanding investigation into Intel regarding another matter. While Intel just settled the antitrust fight with AMD that originally kick-started the investigation last month, the FTC is now reportedly talking to NVIDIA to see if its numerous complaints against the chipmaker actually hold water. Barnes & Noble ships first Nooks, confirms delays
Barnes & Noble today confirmed that it's shipping the first Nook readers to early customers. The dual-screen readers should reach the first shoppers sometime next week and will be accompanied by in-store demo units at its larger stores on Monday. Spokeswoman Mary Ellen Keating wouldn't say how many units had been ordered before first shipments but did say there was a "high volume."

Hell freezes over, the FCC admits that CableCARD is a failure
Well we have to say we never saw this coming, but have dreamed of it for years, but it appears that the FCC is actually listening to the CEA and is asking for comments on how to replace CableCARD with something that would actually make the network open. Nook early adopters promised a December 9th shipment, $10 online gift certificate
We already made it clear that the January 15th Nook date applies only to new orders, and while Barnes & Noble's retail outlets may not be getting any love (read: no units will be in stock for sale, as confirmed today), many of the faithful who pre-ordered early are receiving a happy note from the company right now with a not-quite-firm statement that "we expect to have it to you by December 9th" with free, upgraded overnight shipping. The Apple Store US has updated the BTO available for the Mac Pro single CPU:
It is now possible to get a high-end CPU clocked at 3.33 GHz, however the price of this option might not be the best marketing factor. Other new BTO, one can now get 2 TB HD. Such options should be propagated to other Apple Store worldwide.

Apple in advanced talks to buy Lala, Streaming music for iTunes?
According to Bloomberg, Apple is in advanced talks to by online streaming music company Lala.
The terms of the deal for privately held Lala weren’t known. The people declined to be identified because talks are still in progress. Investors in Palo Alto, California-based Lala include Boston-based Bain Capital Ventures and Ignition Partners in Bellevue, Washington.
The Lala service, which debuted last year, lets users listen to any song on the site once for free. Customers can then opt to buy the track for 10 cents and listen to it on the We

Motorola prepping 'La Jolla' low-end Android clamshell?
It's a source code-palooza these days! Fresh off that huge HTC code name find, someone's dug into the Motorola CLIQ's source code and found references to a new Motorola device dubbed "La Jolla." Meaning "The Jewel" in Spanish, La Jolla apparently means "low-end Android clamshell" in Motorola-ese, with mention of a WQVGA screen, 528MHz processor and what seems to be a QWERTY keyboard. Piqqem sentiment puts Apple on top for November tech
Apple has garnered the best investor sentiment for November amongst a group of seven major technology corporations, says ranking website Piqqem. The company's score rose 2 percent during the month to reach 59 out of 100, easily beating second-place finisher Google, which grew its score by 4 percent to hit 49. HP came in third with 35; Cisco, Amazon, Intel and Microsoft represent the remaining businesses.

iMac, MacBook top retail PC sales in US
Apple virtually dominated US retail computer sales in October, the NPD Group said in a report issued Friday. The new iMac, particularly the 21.5-inch model, was the top-selling desktop for the month while the 13-inch MacBook Pro was the leader in notebooks for the same period. The Mac creator in each case had multiple entries in the top 10 of each category, with the 27-inch iMac in third place for desktops while other MacBook models were eighth, ninth and tenth in notebooks.

We know it can be tough scraping by with a measly 2.93GHz Xeon processor and 1TB hard drives in your Mac Pro, so you'll no doubt be pleased to know that Apple has finally seen fit to add a bit of extra horsepower to its humble little desktop. NPD: MacBook bestselling laptop, iMac bestselling Desktop
According to data collected by The NPD Group, Apple’s 13-inch MacBook was the top-selling laptop and the 21.5-inch iMac was the top-selling desktop in the retail channels during the month of October, GigaOM reports. Apple's products are expected to do well in November and December as holiday shopping numbers come in.

Court orders Apple to pay OPTi $21.7m in patent suit
The US District Court for the Eastern District of Texas has issued a final judgment in the patent infringement lawsuit between OPTi and Apple, ordering the Mac maker to pay a total of $21.7 million in damages and pre-judgment interest. The patents involve technology related to "predictive snooping" of cache memory for relaying information between a CPU and other components.

FCC investigating Verizon ETF rate hike
The FCC today sent a letter to Verizon asking it to explain its recent decision to double cancellation fees for smartphone users. It comes prompted by existing investigations and a recently introduced bill by Senator Klobuchar that would force pro-rated fees. The letter expresses concern that Verizon may have inflated the fee to keep customers for phones like the Droid attached to the network for as long as possible.

Apple hit by $21.7 million patent infringement charge on “pre-snoop” technology
Apple has received a bit of a setback in the US District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, where it has been found guilty of infringing a patent held by OPTi Inc.The court yesterday issued the final judgment in the patent infringement action between OPTi Inc and Apple Inc. This suit centred around a patent on “pre-snoop” technology. This apparently is relates to U.S. patent No. 6,405,291, entitled “Predictive Snooping of Cache Memory for Master-Initiated AccessesApple apparently infringed claims 73, 74 and 88 of U.S. Patent No. 6.405,291 (the “291 patent”); OPTi has been given approval to recover from Apple a reasonable royalty of $19 million in actual damages. Microsoft agreeing to EU browser changes?
Microsoft has agreed to make some final changes to its web browser ballot system to accommodate requests, a tip indicated Friday. The OLPC project hasn't been the success that Nicolas Negroponte, its creator, had hoped. That's not because of the lack of good advice that Apple's CEO gave along the way.
Interestingly, Jobs did advice founder Nicholas Negroponte at several points along the design process even though his advice wsn't well recieved..
"I got an email from Steve Jobs (the night the laptop was revealed) he said you can't build it for a hundred dollars, and my answer was oh yes I can," Negroponte said as part of a lecture at the University of Pennsylvania, Thursday night.

You might think MikroMikko is the name of some Asian fusion restaurant, but it was actually Nokia's first computer line -- and in 1987, the MikroMikko 3 was a state-of-the-art MS-DOS machine with 1MB of RAM and 20MB drive. It's been about 25 years since Nokia's made a computer bigger than an N900, but it's back in the game with its first netbook, the Booklet 3G. Nokia's pitching the Booklet as a top-of-the-line machine with an all-aluminum chassis, integrated connectivity and GPS apps, and at $699 it's certainly priced that way -- although inside it's got a low-power Atom processor and 4,200rpm hard drive. 'Clean' iPhones may be vulnerable to spyware
Factory-standard iPhones may be as vulnerable to security threats as jailbroken ones, says a Swiss iPhone developer, Nicolas Seriot. In newly-published research, the developer comments that a concept app called SpyPhone is capable of browsing web histories and GPS positions, as well as reading and editing Address Book contents. Crucially the vulnerability does not require exposing iPhone firmware by jailbreaking it.

Gaming peripheral maker SteelSeries has introduced a SteelSeries Adapter for mobile devices, which lets users plug in their existing two-plug headsets, gaming microphones or headphones into any device, mobile or otherwise, with a 3.5mm audio jack. FusionGarage plans media event to tell its side of the CrunchPad story
Michael Arrington may have declared the CrunchPad dead, but that's not stopping his former partners at FusionGarage, who've scheduled a video conference with CEO Chandra Rathakrishnan so he can "share his side of the story." Chandra will also be demonstrating the 12-inch capacitive web tablet -- which, somewhat amazingly, will be the first time we've ever seen proof that the elusive device actually even exists and functions. The last time we heard from SmartSynch it had inked a deal with AT&T to provide communications between its smart energy products and power companies. Apple beefs up Mac Pro and Xserve options
In case that Core i7 iMac was making you Mac Pro shoppers' eyes wander a bit, Apple has beefed up the top end of their lineup. The Mac Pro can now be configured with a 3.33GHz Quad-core Xeon Processor (strangely the 3.33GHz processors aren't available in Octo-Core configs) and 8TB of Hard drive space (4x2TB). 3.33GHz Xeons processors and 2TB hard drives have been out for quite awhile, so this isn't a big surprise. Verizon commits to 'newer' Android for Droid Eris with Google Maps Navigation in Q1 2010
HTC has pulled no punches about the fact that it intends to bring Heros up to Android 2.0 (or is that 2.1?) spec at some point, though neither Sprint nor Verizon had quickly followed on to assure customers that there'd be upgrades ready and waiting for their versions (sure, technically, the Droid Eris is a different internal HTC codename than the Heros of the world, but they're basically brothers from the same mother). The folks at ABI Research have done up a nice summary of the status of mobile WiMAX globally, saying that they expect the total number of subscribers to be at around two million come January. Overall it's not the most optimistic picture, with many service rollouts falling short of their projected aims both in availability and in subscribers, South Korea's numbers "stagnant," and LTE breathing down everybody's necks -- particularly in the US and Japan. Apple today quietly upgraded the Mac Pro and Xserve with a handful of feature upgrades. The single-processor Mac Pro now has the option of a 3.33GHz quad-core Xeon, pushing its clock speed up past a fully-equipped eight-core version's 2.93GHz limit. The Xserve has also been upgraded to accept 4GB RAM sticks and can recognize as much as 24GB of RAM in the single-processor version and 48GB in the dual-processor model.

Nintendo loses DS flash cart case in French court
According to a post on Maxconsole, a court in Paris has just dismissed a lawsuit filed by Nintendo over the use of flash carts on the DS. Apparently, the gamemaker was attempting to halt the use of the cartridges due to their ability to circumvent copy protection and allow for pirating of software, but a judge in France took a decidedly different view. As the carts are often used for homebrew and DIY projects, the court holds that owners of the console should be able to develop software much as a license holder of Windows might. Furthermore, the article claims that the court also deemed Nintendo's strict control of development "illegal" (Maxconsole's words), and said that development of software for the system shouldn't be hamstrung by the need for proprietary kits. Hearst's Skiff to publish e-books for iPhone, tablets
Hearst today provided details of a new digital publishing system it hopes will make digital text more widespread. Skiff will have a store as well as an underlying gateway that lets Hearst and other firms both collect ad revenue from all their sources as well as adapt the same book, magazine or newspaper to a variety of formats. A single work could be reformatted to work with an iPhone, dedicated e-book readers or even tablet devices.

Kodak selling OLED display business to LG, cross-licensing like there's no tomorrow
It was always hard to comprehend Kodak as a display technology company while maintaining a zero presence in the TV or monitor industry, and now, after developing the first OLED material way back in the 70s and plenty of beautiful displays since, Kodak is getting out of the OLED game. Bericht: Oracle erwägt Ausgliederung von MySQL
Im Streit um die Übernahme von Sun Microsystems hat Oracle-Chef Larry Ellison gegenüber der EU-Kommission nun Kompromissbereitschaft signalisiert. Apple Inc. faces patent abuse over the iPhone's digital camera
Apple faces a court room struggle against IP firm, St. Clair Intellectual Property Consultants, which has filed a lawsuit claiming the computer company has violated several of its digital camera patents.The case was filed in October in the US District Court in Delaware and has reached the scheduling conference stage, which begins January 13 2010. Harvard and MIT researchers working to simulate the visual cortex to give computers true sight
It sounds like a daunting task, but some researchers at Harvard and MIT have banded together to basically "reverse engineer" the human brain's ability to process visual data into usable information. However, instead of testing one processing model at a time, they're using a screening technique borrowed from molecular biology to test a range of thousands of models up against particular object recognition tasks. Apple one step closer to new Cupertino campus
After an eight-month wait, Apple is now a step closer to developing a second campus in Cupertino, California. A planning commission has voted to rezone Appleís 7.78-acre property on Pruneridge Avenue. While originally an industrial site, the area was converted to residential by the city in 2006, preparing for a 130-unit townhouse and condominium project proposed by previous owners. FTC nimmt angeblich Ermittlungen im Fall Intel vs. Nvidia auf
Seit einigen Monaten beschäftigen Lizenzstreitigkeiten Intel und Nvidia. Beide Unternehmen beziehen sich auf einen Lizenzvertrag aus dem Jahr 2004, legen diesen aber unterschiedlich aus. Science-Quatsch: Kleinster Schneemann der Welt

Dass Wissenschaftler auch mal Zeit für Quatsch haben, ist vielleicht gar nicht so schlecht. Wie bei diesem Mikroschneemann von David Cox, der zwar nicht aus Schnee besteht, aber aus Kügelchen, die sonst zur Kallibrierung von Elektronenmikroskoplinsen da sind. Zwei Stück wurden hier mit Platin zusammengeschweißt. Der Nanoschneemann hat eine Breite von 0,01mm, was ein Fünftel einer Haaresbreite entspricht. Mit Ionenstrahl wurden Augen und Lachen eingefräst. FTC may see Intel-NVIDIA dispute as anti-competitive
The Federal Trade Commission is investigating the countering Intel and NVIDIA lawsuits to determine whether Intel is violating antitrust laws, a leak maintained late Thursday. Sources said the US agency is concerned that Intel's original lawsuit was meant to stifle legitimate competition in system chipsets rather than guarding against a license violation. The investigation would be part of the larger antitrust hunt that had originally targeted AMD before its private settlement.

Novell meldet 256 Millionen Dollar Nettoverlust
Novell hat im vierten Geschäftsquartal 2009 (bis 31. Oktober) einen GAAP-Nettoverlust von 256 Millionen Dollar oder 0,74 Dollar pro Aktie verzeichnet. Im Vergleichszeitraum des Vorjahres belief sich der Fehlbetrag noch auf 16 Millionen Dollar oder 0,05 Dollar je Anteilsschein. IDC: 300.000 Apps in 2010
Die Marktforscher der IDC wissen bereits heute: Im Zuge der Erholung der Weltwirtschaft wird 2010 für den IT- und Telekommunikationssektor ein moderates Wachstum erwartet. Apple wins key permission for second Cupertino campus
Remember Apple’s plans for a second campus in Cupertino? Well, we do, and so does Apple, which this week won essential cooperation from city planners.The company has been waiting for eight months for city planners to rezone the 7.78-acre plot to allow for office use. The planning commission finally reached a unanimous decision favouring this rezoning on Monday, reports Cupertino Courier.The site, which is south of the Hewlett-Packard campus, houses two office buildings currently occupied by Apple employees. The commission could not reach a consensus last April when Apple requested the rezoning. Apple acquired this property in 2006, before which the city had rezoned the previously industrial site into residential, figuring there may be a property boom.

Is the click wheel iPod (Classic, Nano) on the way out? A new report from Joystiq (via MR) seems to suggest that Apple has ended support for click-wheel games.
Rather than being a simple touchscreen-enabled port of the original click wheel game, the iPhone Song Summoner contains both Song Summoner and Song Summoner 2, which was never released due to Apple ending support for click wheel games.

IDC: Apples App Store erreicht nächstes Jahr 300.000 Anwendungen

Verizon tonight cut deep by launching a new ad (seen below) for the Motorola Droid. The new spot directly attacks the iPhone and calls Apple's handset a "digitally clueless pageant queen," making fun of its focus on style and even mocking the glass case Apple used to display the phone at its launch in 2007. It's an all too brief look, but it's infinitely more than we've seen so far. CNET Asia has managed some hands-on time the Zii Trinity concept smartphone. Quite a looker, and here we also get a glimpse of it next to the good ol' Zii Egg. There's something peculiar about Verizon's latest addition to its promotional Droid onslaught. Custom Solutions has introduced a new e-book utility, eBook Reader. The software can download free e-books and save them to a bookshelf folder kept in a user's Documents folder. While eBook Reader allows users to read the books directly from the software interface, it also provides an option to automatically convert text to speech. RIM comes onboard with the Wireless Power Consortium
Look's like the Wireless Power Consortium can add another one of the big boys onto its list of powerful allies. Research in Motion's come on board as a member of the organization, which now includes 21 manufacturers. The Wireless Power Consortium's noble quest, you'll remember, is to develop a wireless charging standard, which it calls the Qi. The group also announced simultaneously that it's successfully finished the second round of prototype testing. RIM's support is adds further hope to the pursuit of said standard, after Nokia joined the cause in October.

Google and Microsoft join I3A's Camera Phone Image Quality Initiative
The International Imaging Industry Association -- colloquially known as I3A -- announced today that Google's signed on as a member of the non-profit organization. They've also simultaneously announced that pre-existing member Microsoft has joined forces with Google on the Camera Phone Image Quality Initiative. What's that all about? The initiative, which also calls Motorola, Eastman Kodak, Nokia, and other members, is dedicated to creating the metrics needed to "produce an accurate and repeatable testing program for camera phone image quality." Considering the wild variances in quality among different cellphones, such formalized measurement techniques would surely be welcomed by everyone on planet earth.

Apple ending click-wheel games?
Is the click wheel iPod (Classic, Nano) on the way out? A new report from Joystiq (via MR) seems to suggest that Apple has ended support for click-wheel games.
Rather than being a simple touchscreen-enabled port of the original click wheel game, the iPhone Song Summoner contains both Song Summoner and Song Summoner 2, which was never released due to Apple ending support for click wheel games.
If true, one would have to wonder why Apple is ending support for the format. New iPods aren't due for another nine months but might Apple be preparing for the end of the click-wheel? Mini touch

Micron Has High Expectations for SSDs
Micron announced that it will launch next year new SSD models, known as C300.
Those drives will be available with storage capacity ranging from 128 to 256 GB and will sport a SATA III interface. The latest will be required to manage the data transfer speed deliver by the SSD: 215 MB/S in writing mode and 355 MB/S in reading mode! However, one will have to pay attention to the power consumption. Micro already announces 3.5 W in use (rather high), and the expected 0.1 W when idle. They should be available for Q1 2010. For sure other manufacturers will also offer new models, feeding the market with competitive products, even though prices do not really drop.

Western Digital to Adopt SATA III Early 2010
If the SATA III only starts to be found on high-end workstation, it is almost impossible to find HD with this specification (beside some forthcoming or samples of SSDs). However, things should change quickly as Western Digital announced that 2 TB HD models will now be available with a SATA III port instead of todays SATA II. The manufacturer will adopt the new format for the rest of its models over the coming year. One should not expect a major jump in performance, and in the best case scenario only a larger cache of the HD will benefit from this larger SATA bandwidth. One will still need a long time before seeing plate-based HD to reach 300 MB/s in transfer speed.

Acer, Lenovo outpace US PC rivals in market share
Acer has officially leapfrogged Dell to become the world's second-largest PC builder, iSuppli confirmed in a new study. The Taiwan firm's computer shipments jumped 16.6 percent year-over-year in the summer to nearly 10.74 million PCs, or a 13.4 percent share of the entire market. Meanwhile, Dell actually dropped 5.9 percent to ship 10.34 million PCs, or 12.9 percent of the whole group.
