Droid trumps iPhone for Time Gadget of the Year
Time today provided a minor surprise by giving the Motorola Droid a first-place finish in its Gadget of the Year countdown (video below). The Android phone won for including free turn-by-turn GPS through Google Maps Navigation as well as having both a large (3.7-inch) touchscreen and a hardware QWERTY keyboard. In comparison, the iPhone 3GS only reached fourth place, earning the spot for popularizing augmented reality through apps like Layar and Yelp.

Google to port Goggles to iPhone, others
Google's just-unveiled Goggles feature won't be limited solely to Android devices, the company said today. Apple released Airport Client Update 2009-002 today fixing some minor issues in Snow Leopard's wireless access software. A restart is required.

Keyboard Maestro 4.0 upgrades support, user interface
Stairways Software has released a new version of Keyboard Maestro, v4.0. The software should now better support Snow Leopard, as a result of 64-bit technology and a redesigned interface. New hotkey features allow the use of Command-Tab, and triggering multiple macros by pressing, holding and/or releasing keys. Support has also been added for Growl notifications, and grouped or hierarchical items in the status menu.

Sony Ericsson Satio back on sale, software update available
it may not be at the top of everyone's wishlist this holiday season, but it looks like those particularly taken with Sony Ericsson's smartphone are now back in luck after a brief suspension of sales. Of course, there's also now a software update available for current Satio owners, but details on it are fairly light apart from word that it improves "handset speeds and battery usage" and that it "fixes previous software issues." TuneWear debuts BoomTune Bomb II Stereo
TuneWear has announced the BoomTune Bomb II Stereo, a compact speaker set for use with MacBooks, iPhones, iPods and other portable devices. The system projects sound in a 360-degree radius with 36mm drivers, and offers an 86dB signal-to-noise ratio. Input comes through a 3.5mm stereo jack; improved sound is said to be possible by opening up the top of each speaker.

ZyXEL puts out first LTE-to-Wi-Fi router
ZyXEL claimed a first today by offering the first 4G router for the Long Term Evolution (LTE) standard. The ZLR-2070S (not yet shown) can take a connection at up to 50Mbps downstream and share it over a local network through either 802.11n Wi-Fi or its four-port Ethernet switch. It's already considered an ideal alternative to wired service for providers that can't or prefer not to run a traditional landline service.

Divine Flat and iWebTemplate have each announced new theme templates, with one set designed for the iPhone and the other for Apple's Keynote presentation software. With Divine Flatís new Contemporary Keynote theme, users receive a variety of customizable scrollwork and icon objects, along with six alternate picture frames and four color backgrounds including tan, orange and two tones of green. Moneydance 2010 adds new graphs and reports
The Infinite Kind has released Moneydance 2010, an upgrade to its personal finance application. The program handles tasks such as banking, bill payment and graph and report creation. The 2010 version adds capital gains reporting, as well as new tagging options for filtering reports and graphs. The home page now offers a quick-search function for finding transactions, and a more detailed budget bar that displays status.

Acer Liquid A1 starts shipping its Android wares in the UK
Looking for something a little different and exciting in the Android space? Acer's Liquid A1 probably fits the bill. Sure, it's another in a long line of slate-style phones with Android, but the quirky (if chunky) design and zippy Snapdragon processor are certainly worth paying attention to. The best part? It's shipping now in the UK, with a price hovering in the £330 range (about $540 US). If someone manages to shoehorn Android 2.0 onto this thing we might start talking serious, but for now it's probably a stretch for a bit of EDGE-only (or 3G if you win the tri-band lottery and us AT&T) import action in the US. MySpace finalizes deal with iMeem
MySpace has quietly completed a buyout of music streaming service iMeem. Following a tentative deal two months ago, the large social network has reportedly bought up iMeem's assets for under $1 million. It's understood by TechCrunch that iMeem will be shut down and its users steered towards MySpace Music, which offers both free web streams and pay-per-download MP3s.

Google blocks hacked Navigation from international use
We were sort of hoping Google would turn a blind eye to the Android hackers who'd enabled Google Maps Navigation for use internationally, but it appears we're just hopelessly optimistic: El Goog's shut Navigation down outside the States. The changes are apparently "anticipated," and the hackers in charge are hard at work getting around it, so there's hope yet -- and at some point Mountain View is going to have to actually launch Navigation abroad for real, so this all just seems a bit petty.

Shuttle gears up for CES with 'we are not alien' campaign, ominous video
Shuttle isn't exactly a company known for aggressive marketing campaigns, but it looks to be changing its tune a bit in the lead up to CES, and it's not too hard to see who its target is. While the company's main website is still as bright and cheery as ever, the newly launched We Are Not AlienbWare.com is an entirely different tale, featuring an ominous teaser video that mixes Shuttle promos (and metaphors) in with footage from District 9. Analyst beings Apple coverage with $260 price target
CLSA Asia-Pacific Markets analyst Steven Fox today launched his first round of Apple coverage, giving the company's stock a Buy rating with a $260 price target. Google Chrome hits beta for Mac and Linux, extensions available for extra-smug Windows and Linux users
At long last Mac and Linux users don't have to feel like second class citizens in Chrome land: they've got official beta versions of Google's browser to call their own. Of course, people have been running the open source Chromium version on both sides of the fence for ages, but beta brings with it a new level of stability and officialness. Google is also finally launching exensions for Chrome, which is available for the Windows and Linux versions of the browser, and with Mac compatibility on the way. There are already 300 extensions available, not a bad start, and hopefully a good indication of the sorts of added functionality we'll be able to stuff into Chrome

BlueAnt releases headset for motorcyclists
BlueAnt today introduced its Interphone F4 motorcycle headset on Tuesday. The device lets riders communicate through most any Bluetooth phone by pairing it to the Interphone F4 as well as listen to streaming music from an A2DP compatible handset or device. The BlueAnt device can also be used as an intercom to talk to a passenger or other riders with the F4 that are within 1,640 feet.

Apple ordered to pay damages in Opti patent case, Apple appeals
Full-time IP licensor Opti sure has been keeping itself busy in the last few years suing the likes of NVIDIA, AMD and Apple, and it looks like its case with the latter may now finally be drawing to a close. After a few years of battling it out in the courts in Texas, the judge in the case has ordered Apple to pay Opti $19 million for three instances of patent infringement, as well as $2.7 million in pre-judgment interest. The judge didn't find that Apple willfully violated the patents in question, however, which concern a memory access technology known as predictive snooping (hence the relatively small damages). Apple apparently isn't quite ready to call it a day just yet

Publishers make pact on e-readers official
True to a late leak, five major American publishers today cemented plans for a joint venture to promote a universal standard for digital magazines and similar content. Condé Nast, Hearst, Meredith, News Corp and Time expect the unnamed company to develop digital magazines that will be readable on many platforms, including different operating systems and screen sizes, such as computers, smartphones and tablets. The technology will also be designed such that it should scale up to color reading devices with mixed media like animations and video.

Umfrage: Mehrheit der IT-Verantwortlichen rechnet mit steigenden Budgets
Ein Großteil der IT-Verantwortlichen sind laut einer von Capgemini durchgeführten Umfrage der Meinung, dass sie im kommenden Jahr ein höheres Budget zur Verfügung haben werden. Vor wenigen Wochen kündigte Google dann an, noch in diesem Jahr werde man die Betaversion für den Mac laden können. Diese Prognose war nicht zu hoch gegriffen denn soeben gab Google die Betaversion frei.

Das Joint Venture führender US-Verlage aus Conde Nast, Hearst, News Corporation, Meredith und Time Inc. für eine einheitliche Plattform für digitale Zeitschriften und Zeitungen ist nicht länger ein Gerücht. Heute gab es dazu eine gemeinsame Presseerklärung (nach dem Break): so soll der Inhalt für alle möglichen Geräte (von Smartphones über Laptops bis hin zu E-Book Readern) und Betriebssysteme aufbereitet werden. Laut John Squires von der Times sogar DRM-frei. Noch gibts für das Konzept keinen Namen, das dürfte aber auch nicht mehr allzu lange dauern.

Google Chrome for Mac (beta) available now
Google has today released the Mac beta of its Google Chrome browser, though this release is not feature-identical with the existing Windows version.
The company promises its browser will run websites and applications at “lightning speed”. Initial low impact testing suggests the browser to be relatively stable on the Mac.
In a move perhaps borrowed from Apple’s Safari, or Opera, you can also visit your favourite websites easily from the New Tab page. When you open a new tab, the sites you visit most often are readily available.
There’s also just one box, which lets you navigate to specified URLs as well as engage in search tasks.

What if you took an original Adamo, shaved a couple pounds off the weight and a grand off the price? You'd end up with something pretty close to the new Dell Vostro V13. Sony has let its customers know via an e-mail and online announcement that it will make significant changes to its online bookstore. As of December 11th, the Sony Ebook Store will be renamed the Reader Store and have a new website, readerstore.sony.com. Newly offered will be e-books only in the open EPUB format, replacing the company's proprietary LRX files. M1 and StarHub will join SingTel in carrying the iPhone on December 9th, the first two carriers have announced. M1 is offering four different plans, priced between $36 and and $198 SGD ($25 to $142 US) per month. Bisher ist das Joojoo Tablet ja vor allem durch seine schillernde Geschichte als Ex-CrunchPad aufgefallen, aber nun haben unsere US-Kollegen es mal selbst in die Finger bekommen. Chandra Rathakrishnan, CEO von Fusion Garage, hatte sich persönlich gemeldet und ihnen das Tablet gezeigt. Es sieht so aus als wäre es ein ziemlich gut funktionierendes Teil, besonders beeindruckt hat die Kollegen das flüssige Abspielen von 1080p YouTube-Content und die schnelle Reaktion des Tablets. Five big publishers officially announce their "iTunes for Magazines"
The battle for the future of publishing is on once again - the last time we saw war like this was at the advent of desktop publishing - today, five major publishers confirmed the last few weeks of rumour with the announcement of a joint venture to develop an ‘iTunes/Hulu for magazines’, a digital content storefront and publications prepped to view on digital devices.

Dell struggles with falling prices, high warranty costs
Dell in its 10Q forms has revealed increasing problems with its home PC group. The company's average selling price for a home system has dropped 23 percent year-over-year as customers have continued to look for cheaper systems. Parties continue to dispute worth of Lala deal
The true price paid for Apple's purchase of Lala continues to be in dispute, a new report suggests. Sources reached by AllThingsDigital recently put the value at $80 million, disputing early indications that Lala was acquired at a "fire-sale" cost. TechCrunch's Michael Arrington, however, cites "sources with indirect knowledge of the deal" as claiming a value of just $17 million, a far cry from the $180 million or more the company was thought to be worth in 2008.

Samsung: every bada phone will use multi-touch
Samsung at an event today provided some early feature details of its bada mobile platform ahead of its actual SDK release. Every phone will have a relatively high specification with a multi-touch wide VGA (roughly 800x480) screen as a minimum for its interface. They will also have to have at least 3G, GPS and Wi-Fi as part of the feature set.

JVC's Everio GZ-HD620 crams 1080p sensor and 120GB storage into world's smallest HDD camcorder
It's been a continual process of evolution with JVC's Everio line, each iteration getting more pixels and and smaller bodies, and the latest entry is the best combination yet. It's the GZ-HD620, a full 1080p-recording camcorder (courtesy of a 1920 x 1080 backside illuminated CMOS sensor) that also sports a 120GB HDD in a package that weighs just 270g. Footage is shot through a 30x optical zoom lens and can also be written to a microSDHC card, though that internal storage will be good for 11 hours of footage at the maximum bit rate (24Mbps), and a vacation-encompassing 50 hours at the minimum (5Mbps). JVC releases ultra-light 1080-res camcorder
JVC chose to add one more camcorder to its range at the very end of the year with a unique entry, the Everio GZ-HD620. Billed as both the lightest and smallest camcorder with a hard drive, it weighs just under 0.6 pounds despite its 120GB hard drive and is both 4.5 inches long as well as 2.5 inches tall. Resümee iPhone developer conference
Vom 1. bis 2. Dezember hatte die iPhone developer conference im Hotel im Wasserturm in Köln stattgefunden. Mit insgesamt 200 Teilnehmern war die Veranstaltung ausverkauft. Durch eine eigens für die Veranstaltung angefertigte iPhone App konnten die Teilnehmer schon auf dem Hinweg Ihre Konferenzteilnahme planen und noch einmal alle Informationen zu den Referenten und den Sessions abfragen. An zwei Tagen gab es viele Einblicke in die Entwicklung auf dem iPhone und den Möglich-keiten im Businesseinsatz. So machte Maximilian Reiß von der TU München in seiner Keynote den Auftakt mit dem Thema "Zwei Jahre iPhone, ein Jahr SDK und AppStore – Status Quo und Herausforderungen".

Seagate intros its first SSD, vows 7mm HDD
After historically fighting flash storage, Seagate today confirmed its change in direction with the launch of its Pulsar solid-state drive. The 2.5-inch, SATA drive is useful for notebooks but chiefly targeted at servers and other computers where both speed and longevity are important. By using single-level cell flash memory, it has an 0.44 percent annualized failure rate and yet reaches peak read speeds of 240MB per second and peak writes of 200MB per second.

Squibble soll Braille-Interfaces endlich richtig mobil und universell nutzbar machen

Der britische Designer Andrew Mitchell hat ein Braille-Interface entwickelt, das genauso funktioniert, wie wir uns das eigentlich schon immer vorgestellt hatten: Das Teil wird per Bluetooth zum Monitor/Tastatur-Ersatz beliebiger Geräte und soll dank 779 per Ultraschall bewegter Pixel-Stifte und Handgriff tatsächlich so kompakt und mobil sein, dass man es genau wie ein Handy jederzeit und überall bedienen kann. Unsicherheit bei mobiler Datensicherheit
Eine aktuelle Umfrage unter mehr als 100 Teilnehmern der Sybase-Fachveranstaltung Mobile Enterprise 09 in Amsterdam macht deutlich, dass über zwei Drittel der europäischen Unternehmen, die an der Umfrage teilgenommen haben, nicht genau wissen, welche sensiblen Daten auf den mobilen Geräten ihrer Mitarbeiter gespeichert sind. Weitere 38 Prozent der Befragten wissen weder, welche Anwendungen auf den Geräten installiert sind, noch welche sensiblen Daten sich in diesen Anwendungen befinden (so schwer vorstellbar das bei iPhone Usern auch ist). Noch bedenklicher ist ein weiteres Ergebnis: Lediglich 15 Prozent der Unternehmen können mit absoluter Sicherheit sagen, dass sie bei einem Verlust, Diebstahl oder Missbrauch von mobil gespeicherten Unternehmensdaten rechtlich abgesichert sind. Mit Pulsar hat Seagate nun nach einigen Verzögerungen seine erste SSD-Serie vorgestellt. Die Solid State Drives verfügen über SLC-NAND-Flash und werden dementsprechend schnell und teuer sein. Nokia is shutting down its posh Regent Street shop following its failure to grab the hearts and minds of consumers.
The company apparently spent £4 million on the shop, which aimed to spread Nokia's brand and message at the hordes of Apple consumers at the flagship Regent Street store on the other side of the road.

Apple has decided to appeal its recent loss in an intellectual property lawsuit initially filed by OPTi. CrunchPad turns into JooJoo, doubles price, seems sketchy
We just finished watching the Fusion Garage press conference where they announced the CrunchPad JooJoo. Besides not really showing it in action (a few seconds of stalled-stutter scrolling of a green screened device didn't get your mouth watering?) the company seems a bit on the sketchy side, even if you don't consider Michael Arrington's legal threats a big deal.
On that, most of the presentation was devoted to jabs at Arrington rather than wowing us with the technology.
The specs: 12-inch capacitive touch screen, 5 hour battery, $499 price tag, Wifi.
We love the idea of a browser-only tablet and at $200-$300 might have taken a look, but at $500, it is a lot to risk on a company that may or may not be around next year and a product thats demo was as poor as we've seen.

Nintendo N64 emulator shown working on iPhone 3GS..built by 14 year old
It's called 3G4 (get it? because G kinda looks like a 6? That's teen slang!) and the iPhone Nintendo N64 emulatior is actively being developed by a 14 year old developer. You'll notice in the demo below that it is running pretty well at scaled down resolutions.
Things on Doogie's to-do list: overcome duplicate button registers, delayed presses, and some crashing -- and he has yet to implement the L, R, and Z keys. It is due out next year, probably on a Jailbroken platform like Cydia or Rock.

Dell teases $450, 0.65-inch ultraportable
Dell tonight provided an early look at a potentially major addition to its Vostro work PCs. The V13 is meant as a budget alternative to an Adamo and measures just as thin at 0.65 inches, but actually weighs less at 3.5 pounds. Boxee Beta, D-Link Boxee Box unveiled
Boxee tonight revealed both the beta version of its software as well as Boxee Box, its first hardware dedicated to its custom TV interface. Both the device and independent software have a newly updated version of the front-end with a much more visual layout that focuses on the menu, the active media queue and a social networking feed for friends, Facebook and Twitter. Nokia shuttering London flagship store
We're not sure exactly what this means for the rest of the world's nine Nokia flagship stores, but it's been announced that Nokia will be pulling out of its prominent Regent Street location in London as it apparently prepares for a retail revamp going into early 2010. Apple bans dev, removes 1,011 apps over shilled reviews
Apple has banned the iPhone developer Molinker and removed the company's entire app library from the App Store, according to MobileCrunch. The action is reportedly a result of fake reviews posted by shills presumably associated with the developer. Squibble portable Braille interface is clever, beautiful
We've been seeing some interesting devices aimed at making life easier for the blind recently, but none that have captured our attention quite like the Squibble from UK designer Andrew Mitchell. The pocketable Braille interface allows users to operate mobile phones and other technology over Bluetooth, using 779 ultrasonic motors to lift illuminated caps against a silicon cover and form Braille letters and other easy-to-understand icons. There's also audio feedback, and a grip that allows for use without having to set it down flat like other Braille readers. Nintendo 64 emulator coming to iPhone?
A Nintendo 64 emulator is allegedly being created for the iPhone and iPod touch according to ModMyi. The app, known as 3G4, overlays many of the N64 controllers directly on the screen, although the current beta reportedly lacks L, R, and Z buttons. Coffee-like stains inspire new type of touchscreen
The magical properties of coffee stains have already spurred on some researchers to develop a better coating for TV screens, and it looks like they've now inspired a few folks to create a new type of touchscreen as well. This latest instance apparently began when Hebrew University professor Shlomo Magdassi was working to develop a touchscreen using silver nanoparticles but ran into trouble making the screen conductive while still remaining transparent. As it happens, the coffee-like stains that he and his colleagues had been trying to remove with fast-drying solvents was actually the solution to his problem, since they remained in contact with each other as they dried and preserved conductivity, but left about 95 percent of the light through the holes

Wi-Fi to top 1Gbps by 2012
The IEEE has recently begun the first steps of voting on a major improvement to Wi-Fi standards due in two years. The 802.11ac standard should upgrade 802.11a to use 80MHz or even 160MHz channels that provide much more bandwidth than today. Combined with about a 10 percent increase in efficiency for modulating the actual frequencies, the speedup should improve the theoretical transfer speeds to as much as 1Gbps, or more than three times the 300Mbps 802.11n reaches for now.
