Google Goggles brings visual search to Android; Favorite Places brings QR codes to restaurant reviews
Looks like Google's been busy on the camera tip lately -- not only is it launching a new QR code-based Favorite Places mobile search product today, it's also demoing Google Goggles, a visual search app that generates local results from analyzing mobile phone images. Favorite Places isn't super-complicated, but it sounds like it'll be pretty useful: Google's sent QR code window decals to the 100,000 most researched local businesses on Google and Google Maps, and scanning the code with your phone will bring up reviews, coupons, and offer the ability to star the location for later. Israeli iPhone to launch Wednesday morning
Beginning at midnight Wednesday local time, Israelis will at last be able to buy the iPhone, Reuters reports. Cellcom will be the first carrier with the device, though it is set to be followed by Orange and Pelephone on Thursday. In contrast with some earlier reports, each of the carriers is being required to buy just 80,000 iPhones for resale rather than 100,000.

IBM developing 10 petaflop supercomputer, Power7 to ship next year
The last we heard, IBM was hard at work on its Power7 processor. Now the company's announcing that the thirty-two core chip -- and copious amounts of eDRAM -- are at the heart of its newest supercomputing project. To be housed at the University of Illinois, IBM's Blue Waters will be the largest publicly accessible supercomputer in the world when it goes online in 2011, theoretically capable of achieving 16 petaflop speeds by connecting up to 16,384 Power7 nodes, although IBM said that initially the theoretical peak performance will likely be closer to 10 petaflops -- with more realistic sustained real-world performance near one p

VMware working on dual-OS smartphone virtualisation
VMware is developing virtualization software for smartphones that would see two profiles running on the same device at the same time. VMware sees a work and personal profile running on a phone at the same time, as opposed to giving users a choice of dual-booting into one or the other. The idea is to have users switch between the two quickly with the press of a button.

We're not quite sure if this is an actual teaser ad or one that just slipped out ahead of the proper launch, but it looks like the brief commercial after the break is the first anyone has seen of Cowon's new V5 HD PMP. Look, we've no qualms with Harman Kardon -- in fact, we've been continually impressed with its wares over the years -- but we're about 99 percent sure we'd never pay a cool grand for a 2.0 speaker set. Yeah, as in a pair of speakers and no subwoofer. Clearly designed for "high-end consumers," the GLA-55 is a two piece setup meant for fashion-forward desks and bedroom nightstands. Lala deal valued at $80 million, say sources
Apple's Lala buyout was worth approximately $80 million, say sources contacted by AllThingsDigital. The value is less than half what the Lala was estimated to be worth in 2008, but considerably more than the company's $35 million raised to date. Apple has refused to comment, and investors Ignition Capital, Bain Capital Ventures and the Warner Music Group have not made any statements.

EU said greenlighting Microsoft browser changes
The European Commission has accepted a set of proposed browser ballot changes that would let Microsoft sell Windows 7 without penalty, a trio of sources said Monday. Officials at the European Union regulator are purportedly agreed on the previously leaked proposals, which include a random order for the choice of browsers and the absence of the Windows Explorer label, and barring complications could approve the measure as soon as next week. Motorola Droid getting 2.0.1 now, Verizon posts details
The "coming weeks" timeframe that Verizon had promised for 2.0.1 to start pushing to Droids has been mercifully condensed down to just a few days, because a number of folks are starting to report that they're receiving the update on their retail units today -- and we've been able to confirm with the company that it's going down. Nintendo N64 emulator shown working on iPhone 3GS..built by 14 year old
It's called 3G4 (get it? because G kinda looks like a 6?) and the iPhone Nintendo N64 emulatior is actively being developed by a 14 year old developer. You'll notice in the demo below that it is running pretty well at scaled down resolutions.
Things on Doogy's to-do list: overcome duplicate button registers, delayed presses, and some crashing -- and he has yet to implement the L, R, and Z keys. It is due out next year, probably on a Jailbroken platform like Cydia or Rock.

According to his multiple sources, Apple paid around $80 million for Lala, reports MediaMemo's Peter Kafka today. Depending on what time they got in, investors are getting about half of what they paid to a bit of a profit for early investors. Kafka singles out Warner Music which put in $20 million and got about 50% back.

US Army developing body armor to protect against 'X-threats'
This one's unsurprisingly been in the works for a little while now, but it looks like the US Army is getting a bit closer to actually deploying a new type of body armor that it hopes will protect soldiers against both known threats and so-called "X-threats." While no one's saying exactly what those threats might be, the key to guarding against them, it seems, is an "advanced generation" of X-Sapi armor plating, which is apparently built from the same materials as current E-Sapi plates but built differently for "additional capabilities." That armor has been the subject of some criticism, however, since it actually adds some additional weight to the soldier's already heavy load, but Lt. Col. iPhone 3GS emulates N64, blows minds in the process
Look what we have here -- a preview of 3G4, a N64 emulator developed by NWorksDev. Compatible with the iPhone 3GS and the iPod Touch 3G, this bad boy appears to be rendering down the graphics (as one would expect) but all in all it seems to be running pretty smoothly. Of course, this is a work in progress: the developer (who claims to 14 years old) says that he has to overcome duplicate button registers, delayed presses, and some crashing -- and he has yet to implement the L, R, and Z keys. CrunchPad turns into JooJoo, doubles price, seems sketchy
We just finished watching the Fusion Garage press conference where they announced the CrunchPad JooJoo. Besides not really showing it in action (a few seconds of stalled-stutter scrolling of a green screened device didn't get your mouth watering?) the company seems a bit on the sketchy side, even if you don't consider Michael Arrington's legal threats a big deal.
The specs: 12-inch capacitive touch screen, 5 hour battery, $499 price tag, Wifi.
We love the idea and at $200-$300 would have taken a look but at $500, it is a lot to risk on a company that may or may not be around next year.

CrunchPad now called Joojoo; TechCrunch claims "ludicrous"
As promised, Fusion Garage today responded to its legal battle with TechCrunch by formally announcing its results in the wake of the CrunchPad's "death." Now called the Joojoo based on an African term for magic, the device has the familiar 12-inch capacitive touchscreen and boots into its front end as little as 9 seconds. Fusion Garage JooJoo tablet rises from the ashes of the CrunchPad
Fusion Garage has finally come clean with its side of the story in regards to the CrunchPad debacle, and just unveiled its new Arrington-free version of the device: the JooJoo. The way Fusion Garage tells it, the device was already in the works at the time of the original TechCrunch post about the idea, and that Michael Arrington and co. made zero contributions to the development of the device. iPod touch a secret Apple weapon, says analytics firm
The iPod touch is more important to Apple than many people may think, claims analytics group Flurry. The firm says it tracks four platforms, and roughly 3,000 applications and 45 million people; within this, the Touch is said to account for 35 percent of user sessions. Of the over 58 million devices with iPhone firmware sold worldwide, the Touch is estimated to represent a little over 40 percent, or at least 24 million.

iTunes Videos competitor Vevo launches tomorrow
Vevo, a joint venture between Sony and Universal Music, claims to be the "Hulu for music videos". That remains to be seen. However, the site did get a big boost today by announcing that a third (of the big four) music label, EMI, would be adding their content to the site.
The site launches tomorrow and is powered by Youtube. Coincidentally, Warner, the only major label not in Vevo, has a partnership with Google to do videos on their own. Vevo has put out their sloppy version of Video Killed the Radio Star below, with 50 Cent.

iTunes Videos competitor Vevo launches tomorrow
Vevo, a joint venture between Sony and Universal Music, claims to be the "Hulu for music videos". That remains to be seen. However, the site did get a big boost today by announcing that a third (of the big four) music label, EMI, would be adding their content to the site.
The site launches tomorrow and is powered by Youtube. Coincidentally, Warner, the only major label not in Vevo, has a partnership with Google to do videos on their own. Vevo has put out their sloppy version of Video Killed the Radio Star below, with 50 Cent.

NAVTEQ, Microsoft team up for better 3D maps
Microsoft already uses NAVTEQ maps in its products, and now it's going to start helping to make 'em better: the two companies have agreed to work together on new ways to collect, create, and store 3D map data and visuals. The basic idea seems to be for Microsoft to help NAVTEQ create better 3D mapping tools in return for supplying the data for Bing Maps, but NAVTEQ says whatever improvements are made will be rolled out to all its clients, so this should pretty much benefit everyone.

AT&T 'Mark the Spot' app is a step in the right direction
Today AT&T has released and iPhone app (iTunes link) that lets customers tell them where they drop calls and experience other general network failings. The app, dubbed 'Mark the Spot', allows you to choose what kind of failures the iPhone is having and lets you plot against frequency of the outage.
Good for them for at least listening at this point, though we're not sure how you submit your issue if you have 'no service' or 'data failure'. We're also hoping they have some pretty serious data centers lined up to take the submissions.

News: Apple sued over iPhone camera patent infringement
Another patent infringment lawsuit has been filed against Apple, this time over the camera technology in the iPhone. St. Clair Intellectual Property Consultants has filed suit in the United States District Court in Delaware, alleging that the iPhone camera infringes on four separate patents that it holds, seeking damages and a jury trial. vieda: “Erfolgreichste deutsche Promo-Aktion im App Store”
Am 1.12. war die vieda-Adventsmarketingaktion des Verbandes der iPhone-Entwickler deutschsprachiger Apps im deutschen App Store angelaufen. Die Resonanz rechtfertigt laut Verband die Bezeichnung "erfolgreichste deutsche Marketingaktion in der zugegebenermaßen noch jungen App Store-Geschichte": Vom 01. bis 03.12.09 wurde die Adventskalender-App des Verbandes 45.600 mal heruntergeladen und schoss damit auf Platz 3 der meistgeladenen Apps - knapp hinter "Wer wird Millionär" und Adobes Photoshop-App.
Heute findet sich die App immerhin noch auf Platz 13 der Meistgeladenen sowie im Genre Lifestyle auf Rang 2 - hinter der Adventskalender-App von MagicSolver. AT&T 'Mark the Spot' app is a step in the right direction
Today AT&T has released and iPhone app (iTunes link) that lets customers tell them where they drop calls and experience other general network failings. The app, dubbed 'Mark the Spot', allows you to choose what kind of failures the iPhone is having and lets you plot against frequency of the outage.
Good for them for at least listening at this point, though we're not sure how you submit your issue if you have 'no service' or 'data failure'. We're also hoping they have some pretty serious data centers lined up to take the submissions.

We're no experts on translating binary rock 'n roll into modern day English (or Russian, for that matter), but we're guessing that the boys from New Zealand would most certainly approve of a guitar pick crafted from recycled motherboards. Etsy member TheBlueKraken seems capable of churning these guys (and many other wares) out in almost any hue of PCB, and at just $7 or $8 apiece, they're hardly a rip off. Analyst: Lala deal supports Apple plans for universal media
Apple's acquisition of Lala has broad implications, claims UBS analyst Maynard Um. The service lets users link offline music with an online library of over 8 million tracks, enabling streaming from any computer with web access. Apple ousts ASUS as most reliable in new study
Apple has taken the lead as the most reliable computer maker thanks to ASUS' over-dependence on netbooks, a new RESCUECOM study says. Where ASUS led the rankings in the third quarter of 2008 and in the spring this year, Apple has surged back to earn a reliability score of 374 for the third quarter this year, or more than twice ASUS' third-place 166 score. Much of ASUS' fall is attributed to first-wave Eee PC netbooks getting older and failing in relatively large numbers due to their poorer build quality.

Nokla und iPhome sind ja auf ihre Art und Weise putzig, auch wenn das die Mutterfirmen natürlich nicht so gerne hören. Jetzt ist aber ein HTC Hero Klon herausgekommen, dass derart geklont ist, dass einem die Worte fehlen. Nicht nur, dass derselbe Markenname verwendet wurde. Auch scheint sich auf dem ersten Blick alles zu gleichen, sogar die UI, nur mit dem großen Unterschied, dass diese "Sense" auf Windows Mobile läuft und nicht auf Android. Apple to open second Bristol store on Saturday
Apple will launch a second Bristol, UK store on December 12th at 9AM, the company has announced. The shop is located within the Upper Mall at Cribbs Causeway, in a storefront formerly owned by music and video retailer HMV. HMV has relocated downstairs to a site formerly owned by its rival, Zavvi. The latter company collapsed earlier this year, suffering from poor sales.

The N64 has been dead for two Nintendo console iterations now, but the dream for the portable version the company never created still lives on. We've seen plenty of homemade creations, but the latest from modder Zenloc claims to be the world's smallest at 120 x 200 x 50mm. Pixel Qi's first displays to support multi-touch
As announced late in November, Pixel Qi will manufacture its first production displays for computers, but added that the displays will support multi-touch inputs. The first batch of these screens will be found in tablet devices which will be released during the first quarter of next year. Pixel Qi has not yet announced who it will partner with on these tablet devices, though it is believed the company will do so at or before CES.

Apple may be insisting on a custom spin of Intel's mobile Core i5 and i7 (Arrandale) processors before it can update its MacBooks and Mac minis, a rumor claims on Monday. Towards a New Formatting System for Disc-based HD
Last week, we relayed information from Fudzilla indicating that Western Digital might be switching to SATA III for its 2 TB HD models as early as Q1 2010. The company denied this information however indicated that there will be indeed something new introduced next year. It will mostly remain invisible for the end user, this is however a major step in the HD industry as it will mark the end of a 30 years-old system: the way physical formatting of HD is carried out.
Since 30 years, all disc-based HDs have the same organization of data.
They are spread in 512 bytes blocks, with a header of each of them allowing its identification, as well as a specific sequence ECC at the end for checking integrity of the stored data. With the release of SSDs, a similar structure was maintained, but blocks are now of 4 KB, 8 times larger and aligning better with current needs.

BMW verliert Glauben an den Wasserstoffantrieb

HTC roadmap shows Android overtaking Windows
A leaked HTC roadmap posted this weekend has revealed that the majority of the company's smartphones for the first half of 2010 will run Android, not Windows Mobile. Of the eight phones slated for launch in the XDA slip, five run Google's platform and are aimed at more interesting categories such as Performance, Design/Lifestyle and Social. The Windows Mobile devices are all relegated to a Productivity category.

Sony to Record FIFA World Cup 2010 in 3D
This is a new example of the initiative taken by Sony to promote its 3D TV system. The company signed a contract with the FIFA in order to get the right to record and display in 3D the 25 football games to take place in June in south Africa. During games, 5 specific cameras will be installed around the field to record while special TV will provide real time coverage.this is a major goal for Sony, as Olympic games and Football World Cup are often the best place to demonstrate new technologies. Of course, 3D TV will only be available in specific area however, while most supporters will not be able to enjoy it, there will be enough to experience this new "immersion" into virtual reality. Tensions Between Apple and Intel?

Intel Cancelled its Initial Larrabee Chips
It has been a long time that Intel did not face a failure, as it was so far recording successes over the past months: Core CPU, ATOm CPU, etc. They seem to have failed to deliver the first initial version of true graphical chipset, aka the integrated system known as Larrabee.Announced two years ago, the system was supposed to revolutionize 3D rendering by replacing the GPU by several x86 cores. While it might have looked good on paper, this technology has been delayed several times and performance levels did not reach those expected.So, it is not surprising to learn that Intel decided to cancel production and business availability of its first version of the system it was working on since 3 years.
