Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 catches FCC on a good day
Oh, to live the life of an FCC certification lab employee: setting up test benches, writing reports, playing with devices that won't be released for months or years. Instead, we're stuck enjoying their fun vicariously at an arm's length through a little portal we know as the FCC Office of Engineering and Technology, where gems like the X10 occasionally pop up complete with pretty in-the-wild pictures, teardowns, and user manuals. Verizon's Band-Aid solution...
Those in favor of removable batteries won't like this one: A Droid with a loose removable battery cover receives this official remedy from Verizon:
Took my phone to the Verizon store, and this is their solution. It's better than what the original rep tried to do, which is put scotch tape on it. IMO, for a $200 phone, this is unacceptable.
We're not saying it is a "Band-aid" solution butok, yes we are.

Verizon to FCC: cancel fees based on high phone costs
Verizon today provided its anticipated response (PDF) to the FCC's inquiry about its sudden hike in early termination fee (ETF) rates for smartphones. The carrier insists that the higher prices of phones like the Motorola Droid are too high to leave the cancellation fees at their regular $175, as it would take a significant loss if a customer with "advanced device" were to quit but only pay the previous one-size-fits-all rate.

The Engadget Show returns Sunday, December 20th!

RegExRX 1.0 edits regular expressions
MacTechnologies has introduced RegExRX 1.0, a developer tool for producing regular expressions. The program is based on the PCRE library and is said to produce patterns which can be quickly copied into Perl, Ruby, PHP, AppleScript and REALbasic. Users can perform live matching and replacing, and view a match list that shows all results, including subexpressions.

Verizon to FCC: hey, you said ETFs were okay!
Even though the FCC just gave Verizon until Monday to respond to its inquiries regarding the company's new $350 "advanced device" early termination fee, they've shown some hustle here and delivered their 77 (yes, seventy-seven) page response today. Verizon ready for iPhone wishes Verizon's CTO
We're pretty sure there is some politics going on here but today Verizon's CTO, Anthony Melone , is saying that they are "capable of handling extra traffic that would be generated by the iPhone"
"We have put things in place already," Melone tells Bloomberg BusinessWeek. "We are prepared to support that traffic."
And another winner:
Melone says the company is ready for the deluge should Verizon Wireless land a deal with Apple for the iPhone. "We will handle it if we ever get it," says Melone.
Yep. That's it. Nothing like "we're working on Visual Voicemail" or "Apple is answering our calls".

Peregrine gaming glove modeled, calibrated, and demoed on video
Now that the Peregrine gaming glove is finalized and taking pre-orders, we had a chance to sit down with creator and company CEO Brent Baier, who guided us through the use of the military-spec'd mitt and gave us our first glimpse at the calibration / key-mapping software (PC only for now, Mac coming later). We're still fiddling with our review unit, and while the gaming aspect is intriguing, we're actually pretty interested in how it could be applied to production and design software. Need for Speed: Shift reaches iPhone, iPod touch
EA has released an iPhone version of Need for Speed: Shift, a racing game originally released for consoles and Windows PCs. The title attempts to bridge arcade racing with simulation elements; players are for instance given a first-person perspective, and must also cope with semi-realistic physics. The game's 20 cars are based on real ones, such as the Pagani Zonda, the BMW M3 GT2 and the Subaru Imprexa WRX STI.

Kindle sets sales record, gets free two-day shipping
Amazon today touted that the Kindle has already had its best-ever month for sales in December. Although the month isn't yet finished, the retailer claims that holiday sales have already pushed sales to an unspecified but all-time high. Ford to give Sync some App Store flavor, opening API to devs in 2010
Ford has already shown it can tie the controls of Sync-enabled vehicles to the music and contacts databases of drivers phones and PMPs and though it may take time before our emotions can be detected, the next step is extending that connectivity to downloadable apps on those devices. Psystar to shut down
Mac clone builder Psystar on Friday said it was shutting down. The Florida-based company's president Rudy Pedraza said the shutdown would take effect "immediately." All eight employees of the small company have been dismissed, and the company's website is no longer functioning.

FTC says it has "no goal of breaking up Intel"
Despite its recent lawsuit against Intel on the grounds of anti-competitive practices, the Federal Trade Commission does not mean to break up the company, an agency spokesperson said in a Friday report. Director of the Bureau of Competition, Richard Feinstein says the FTC simply wants Intel to modify what it considers to be anti-competitive behavior. The lawsuit was launched as the FTC felt Intel attempts to unfairly control competition in the personal computer chip market.

RIM's optical trackpads: they weren't joking about the 'optical' part

Chromium OS lands on the Archos 9, doesn't do much
Trying to satisfy that browser-only touchscreen tablet urge? Well, you're sort of in luck. Those Atom-powered Archos 9 tablets are out and about, and the fine folks at UMPCPortal have slung a copy of Google's Chromium OS onto one. Unfortunately, since there's no touchscreen keyboard in the OS (yet), and the touchscreen input isn't even recognized, this is more of a "proof of concept" than a killer app. Still, we like where this is headed.

Datenlieferant ist offensichtlich das Internetportal T-Online.de, wie schon von anderen Nachrichten-Apps bekannt, lassen sich die Symbole in der Fußleiste ganz nach den persönlichen Vorlieben konfigurieren: Nachrichten, Panorama, Boulevard, Sport, usw. Der Daten-Abruf dauert zwar teils ein wenig, alles in allem ist das Programm aber sicher einen Download wert.

AMD stellt Grafiktreiber ATI Catalyst 9.12 bereit
AMD hat Version 9.12 seiner Grafiktreiber ATI Catalyst für Windows und Linux freigegeben. Nach Installation des Updates unterstützen nun auch Karten der Radeon-Serien HD 4800 und HD 4700 die in DirectX 11 enthaltene GPGPU-Schnittstelle DirectCompute 10.1. Bislang stand die API nur der HD-5000-Reihe zur Verfügung. Neu ist auch Support für OpenGL 3.2 ab einer Radeon HD 2000.

IEEE revamps phone battery standard
The IEEE standards group will soon begin revising its 1725 standard for rechargeable batteries in cellphones. The undertaking aims to improve the quality and reliability of lithium-ion and lithium-ion polymer batteries as buyers demand more power and longer runtimes for their smartphones. Verizon network braced for possible iPhone
Verizon has already built up its 3G network in the event it lands an iPhone deal, the company's CTO Anthony Melone said late Thursday. The executive stops short of saying that the network has been upgraded specifically for Apple but that the carrier is "prepared" for the level of data traffic the iPhone would bring. Zune HD Twitter app updated, dirty words no longer censored
Microsoft promised us it would remove the silly content censorship from the Zune HD Twitter app ASAP, and here we are a day later with version 1.1, which lets you see all the schoolyard swears you could ever want. High five, assholes. Unfortunately, we're not seeing a huge performance improvement: it's a tiny bit snappier, but we're still seeing unresponsive buttons, laggy scrolling, and random WiFi disconnects. On to version 1.2!

Apple Mail: Fehler zieht GIF-Dateien zu riesigen TIFFs auf
Apple Mail hatte bereits 2005 einen großen Fehler bei GIF-Dateien in einer Mail. Diese wurden bei Weiterleitung der Mail zu TIFF Dateien konvertiert, und so wurde aus einer 50Kb großen Gif-Datei schnell eine gut 5Mb großen Datei. Apple behob das Problem.
Nun ist uns ein ähnliches Problem durch einen Kunden bekannt geworden, welches erhebliche Verwandtschaft zu genannter Problematik hat.

iPhone, Droid make large gains in online share
Apple's iPhone and Android-based phones have made some of the greatest strides in market share during the past month, AdMob says. In November, the iPhone pushed forward again to claim 54 percent of world smartphone Internet traffic and was joined by a similar gain from Android, whose total share jumped from 11 to 16 percent. Intel hints MacBook Pro speed feed for early decade date
Intel intends introducing new chips on January 7, day one of the huge Consumer Electronics Trade (CES) next month, including 32-nanometer Arrandale processors across the Core i3, i5 and i7 brands.
During a press conference picked up upon by MacRumors, Intel promised its Arrandale and Grantdale processors are shipping to manufacturers now and will make their debut in new computers in early 2010.
Mobile versions of these processors have been anticipated to take a leap into the insides of future Apple laptops, specifically the MacBook Pro. Speeds could hit 2.66GHz, MR observes.

FCC extends deadline on Verizon's ETF response, lets it enjoy the weekend
They're not exactly calling off the hounds, but the FCC's standing down just a wee bit in its hunt to get to the bottom of Verizon's astronomical new $350 "advanced device" early termination fee; the original deadline for the carrier's responses was yesterday, December 17, but instead, the FCC will now be checking its mailbox on Monday. Even in the most extreme outcome, it'd likely be months or years before the FCC would actually go from an inquiry to applying pressure on Verizon to lower the fee. Palm reduziert Quartalsverlust um 83 Prozent
Palm hat im zweiten Geschäftsquartal 2010 (bis 27. November) seinen Verlust im Vergleich zum Vorjahr um 83 Prozent reduziert. Der Fehlbetrag schrumpfte von 508,6 Millionen Dollar auf 85,4 Millionen Dollar (59 Millionen Euro) oder 0,54 Dollar je Aktie. Damit konnte der Handyhersteller die Erwartungen der Analysten nicht erfüllen, die einen Verlust von 0,32 Dollar je Aktie vorausgesagt hatten.

Mail Services Update 1.0 fixes Snow Leopard Server issues
Continuing a series of pre-Christmas updates, Apple has posted Mail Services Update 1.0, a release for Snow Leopard Server. The patch reduces memory consumption, and now allows Mail to recover from a disruption in Directory Services. The file is a 20.6MB download and requires Snow Leopard Server 10.6.2.

Palm Pre Plus on tap for CES?
One of Verizon's first webOS phones will be a direct upgrade to the Pre if a leak is accurate. The company's internal systems reportedly show a "Palm Pre Plus" without supplying further details. RIM steigert Umsatz und Gewinn im dritten Quartal
Research In Motion (RIM) hat für das dritte Quartal seines Geschäftsjahres 2010 (bis 28. November) eine Gewinn- und Umsatzsteigerung bekannt gegeben. Apple is big - really big - in Japan, where the iPhone now accounts for 46.1 percent of the smartphone market, according to the latest data from Impress.
The company achieved sales accounting for almost half of the entire Japanese smartphone market across 2009, the analysts said. This drove the company’s iPhone 3G and 3GS to claim the top two slots in the sales charts, with the 3G model seizing 24.6 percent and the 3GS grabbing 21.5 percent.
Apple’s success has slashed marketshare of traditional incumbents in the smartphone space, with Sharp’s W-ZERO3 seeing sales halved for the Windows-powered device.

Google's Nexus One lacks multitouch?
Our buddy Tnkgrl just had a sit down with Google and HTC's lovedroid, the Nexus One. She "wasn't allowed" to take pictures or video but she came away with plenty of detail. The biggest point of clarification might not be what's included in the handset, but what's missing: multitouch. She confirms, "no multitouch support in the browser or in Google Maps," just like Verizon's Droid (but available on the European Milestone). The unit she tested included a 4GB microSD card, 1400mAh battery, works on T-Mobile's 3G only (AT&T limited to EDGE), and was "super snappy! Faster than the Droid." Oracle steigert Umsatz und Gewinn im zweiten Fiskalquartal
Oracle hat in seinem zweiten Quartal (bis 30. November) einen GAAP-Nettogewinn von 1,458 Milliarden Dollar (1 Milliarde Euro) oder 0,29 Dollar je Aktie erwirtschaftet. Canon hat neue Firmwaredateien für seine Profi-Spiegelreflexkameras EOS-1D Mark III sowie die EOS-1Ds Mark III und die EOS 5D Mark II vorgestellt. Die Intel Arrandale Chips waren bislang ja ein Geheimnis, aber jetzt sind sie offiziell. Beides Dual-Core Chips integrierte GPU Namens "Intel HD Graphics", die dennoch zusätzliche Graphikkarten erlauben, Hyperthreading, Turbo Boost beim mobile i5 und im Demo liefen Call o Duty 4 auf dem mobile i5 und Blu-ray und World of Warcraft auf dem i3. Intel Responds to FTC Complains and Lawsuit
Following the decision taken by the FTC to sue Intel for its unfair business practices on the CPU, GPU and software market, the founder responded:
The lawsuit filed by the FTC is misguided and unwarranted. Put simply, Intel has not violated the law. Litigation was not our choice, but, now that we have been sued, we will aggressively defend ourselves, and we look forward to a successful resolution of the FTC's claims.This lawsuit is not based on claims that Intel violated the existing antitrust laws. Instead, the FTC is advocating new rules regulating business conduct. Those rules would harm, not help, competition and would reduce incentives for companies to invest in research and development and other pro-competitive activities.This lawsuit will cost the taxpayers tens of millions of dollars, but it will not help American consumers. Yesterday has been a rather frustrating day. Instead of presenting in details its future Arrendale CPU, Intel just unveiled that they will be officially demoed during the Las Vegas CES on January 7th.Even if most details are already known, some points remain unclear: performance level of the integrated graphic cores, their working frequencies (166, 500 or 700 MHz), true hardware capabilities (will it hardware decode HD video?). As Starcraft II will be available on Mac on the same date, we would quickly be able to judge how efficient are those integrated graphic cores vs. discrete GPU or the NVIDIA GF 9400M chipset.

FTC won't ask Intel to break up
The Federal Trade Commission may have a pretty big beef with Intel, but it looks like won't be going as far as to seek a breakup of the company. That word comes straight from the director of the FTC's Bureau of Competition, Richard Feinstein, who flatly told reporters yesterday that the FTC has "no goal of breaking up Intel." In case you missed it, this follows a lawsuit that the FTC filed against Intel earlier in the day yesterday, which alleges that the company has engaged in "anticompetitive tactics." As you can see above, NVIDIA has already responded to that development in its usual manner.

Sprint's HTC Hero and Samsung Moment on track to get Android 2.1, not 2.0
So Sprint's backtracking on its promise to deliver Android 2.0 to its Hero and Moment in the first half of next year, but it's backtracking in an awesome way for a change of pace -- they'll actually be getting 2.1. That makes tons of sense considering that the leaked Hero builds have all been on 2.1 and 2.0 will be all but obsolete by the time HTC gets around to releasing anything -- so yeah, we probably could've predicted this anyway, but now it's official. Unfortunately that 1H 2010 window hasn't been reigned in at all, but here's hoping this is a case where they under-promise and over-deliver.

AT&T has only reduced spending on its network and increased margins since the 2007 iPhone launch
AT&T has received a great deal of criticism for the abysmal quality of its network in major cities. They've always countered they they were going to, at some point in the future, upgrade the quality of service in those areas where it is poor. But according to their own SEC filings, they've actually been pulling back on spending on their network. All this time they've been taking more and more iPhone owners on unlimited plans, they've cut their spending on the network that is supposed to carry their data. Is it any wonder that people are so mad?

iPhone controls 46% of Japanese smartphone market

Sony staying conservative with Reader device, aware of current tablet mania
Sony's Sir Howard Stringer played the tease at today's Reader content partnership presser, stating that while Sony could make the device into a multimedia tablet, it would rather wait and see if consumers warm up to current devices. Stringer's watching if people find the form factor "comfortable and helpful" before Sony starts "plowing on a thousand apps" or building a "Vaio Reader." Palm on Thursday night reported a struggling fall quarter. The smartphone maker shipped 780,000 phones, a 41 percent increase over what it shipped in the fall of last year, but only sold 573,000 of these, a 4 percent drop versus the year before. While it dramatically stemmed its losses, it still saw a net loss of $85.3 million and its revenue was also more than halved from $191.6 million to $78.1 million.

Microsoft updating Zune HD Twitter to stop censoring tweets
Microsoft definitely copped some of Apple's lame App Store antics with its tweet-censoring Zune HD Twitter app, so now it's time for the infuriatingly vague PR-speak backtracking -- Redmond just pinged us to say it's "identified the issue" with the Twitter app and that a naughty words-enabling update is coming "as soon as possible." That's a pretty lame response, considering the "issue" is that the app is coded to actively censor tweets -- not exactly an "oops" moment, you know?

RIM ships record 10.1 million BlackBerries
Research In Motion tonight reported one of the best quarters in its history from sheer expansion. The company shipped an all time high of 10.1 million BlackBerries from September through November, smashing its previous record of 8.3 million. Of those, 4.4 million were new to BlackBerry, and the tally pushed RIM's active accounts to about 36 million.
