The Google Nexus One trickle continues. Today's two menu items include a 5-minute demonstration of the Android 2.1 interface -- shaky, sure, but it's a pretty thorough rundown of all the menus. We're also serving up some low-resolution picture comparisons of the Nexus One laying side-by-side with the iPhone and HTC Hero. It

An LCD television that encroaches the ground of OLED screens
Over the years we have heard about the OLED screens. They are much used for mobile phones, however no manufacturer has yet succeeded in producing a big screen (beyond 15") using this very promising technology since it frees them from using any retro-lighting and thus to cut power consumption, and also allows the screen to be very thin. During this time, the LCD technology has continued to evolve. LG has just shown that one can make large television sets (42") practically as thin as OLED screens.
They will present at the time of CES at Las Vegas a prototype of television set that will have a thickness of only 2,6 mm and a weight of 4 kg. In addition to its thinness, this screen will be ready with transmit 3D thanks to its update frequency of 120 Hz. Intel release details of new ATOM processors
Intel has shown its new range of ATOM processors, the Pine Trail. With the idea of keeping its range focused on the mass market, they will start with the same support of an integrated video solution, the GMA 3150. They will be engraved in 45 nm, and have no immediate plans to go for the 32nm, but should consume less power than their predecessors, that will allow the manufacture to make lighter machines or to have an increased autonomy. Intel who already have sold 40 million ATOM processors hopes to continue with this enormous success.

Briefly: Synium Christmas Sale, Goodies bundle update
In brief: Synium has announced a special 50 percent Christmas discount on all of its software products. The sale will run from December 24th to the 26th, and require the coupon code "XMAS2009". Twittelator 3.5 iPhone app adds full landscape mode
Stone Design has released an update to its iPhone Twitter clients, Twittelator Pro and Twittelator Free. Version 3.5 adds full support for landscape orientation throughout the entire interface, while conversations threads can be viewed in Messages. Messages are now cached locally, enabling users to view content even while disconnected from the Internet.

Audio-Technica intros USB turntable, software combo
Audio-Technica on Tuesday introduced its AT-LP60-USB LP-to-Digital Turntable System that lets users convert the music recorded on their vinyl collections to digital media files. The turntable ships with a phono cartridge, USB cable and software that is compatible with both Windows and Mac OS X computers. A phono preamp is built-in, and users can select between 33.33 and 45RPM playback speeds.

Fujitsu LifeBook UH900 in action: good benchmarks, so-so multitouch
Step aside, VAIO P, Fujitsu's managed to take too-small screens on netbooks to new heights with the UH900, and the addition of a touchscreen makes you seem seriously early 2009. So, how does it perform? UMPC Fever is feeling it, with a CrystalMark score helped along by the UH900's SSD, even if done few favors by the 1.6GHz Atom Z530 processor. Unfortunately, while the touchscreen display does offer multitouch gestures, they seem rather laggy -- as demonstrated in the video after the break. And thus we witness the odd disconnect of "laptops" and "phones," as the screen size and processor speed borders on a merging point and the interaction styles (or at least the execution on those styles) almost couldn't be further apart.

Orange, SFR cut prices on French iPhone
French carriers Orange and SFR have announced significant discounts on the iPhone in the run up to Christmas. Orange is now selling the 16GB iPhone 3GS for €59, a reduction from €149; the 32GB model is priced at €179, while the 8GB iPhone 3G costs just €19. To qualify buyers must accept an Origami contract, which starts at roughly €41 per month.

Brando intros USB 3.0 hard drive enclosures
Brando is now offering USB 3.0 hard drive enclosures that fit any 2.5-inch SATA hard drives. As the name suggests, they are USB 3.0 compliant, allowing for theoretical maximum transfer speeds of up to 5Gbps, or ten times that of traditional USB 2.0 connections. They enclosures are backwards compatible with the USB 2.0 and 1.1 standards as well.

BlackBerry services down in North America yet again?
Look, BlackBerrys are always supposed to do a few things well: 1) grab your email in real time off an Exchange server; 2) make you look important; and 3) work. It seems, though, that we're working on our third major North American outage here in less than a month, with reports flowing in that users connected to BIS are having trouble with Messenger, web browsing, and apps that consume data (though email is inexplicably unaffected). Anyone out there seeing problems?

OLPC teases $75 tablet features, images
The One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) project today provided a deeper glimpse into its XO-3 tablet, including concept shots and more features. The roughly letter-sized computer will now hopefully include a camera on the back to record video in a more intuitive way than the XO-1. Concept designer Yves Behar, responsible for the new design, also clarifies that founder Nicholas Negroponte's desire for "no holes" would involve wireless power.

Verizon Samsung Omnia II impressions
When the Omnia II first appeared on our radar, two things caught our attention: TouchWiz 2.0 and Windows Mobile 6.5. To be honest, neither of these items really piqued our interest: we knew what to expect from WinMo and had serious reservations about Samsung's latest and greatest UI. That said, we were more than willing to suspend judgement until we saw her in action. With bullet points that include a 3.7-inch AMOLED display, 800MHz processor, and 8GB storage (before you even get to your microSD card), one could honestly hold out hope for a pretty decent product. Did the handset make for a satisfying, well-rounded smartphone? Or did it just find new ways of repeating the same old errors? You'll have to read on to find out.

Barclay's: Macs, Touches likely to be up in Dec. quarter
Apple stock is currently attractive for a variety reasons, writes Barclay's Capital analyst Ben Reitzes. The stock is now sitting at approximately $200, and said to be poised to hit $235. This is primarily because of Mac sales, which Reitzes argues will grow at least 22 percent in the December quarter, and likely more. A recent iMac shipping delay is attributable to both technical problems and unexpected demand, he adds.

OLPC shows off absurdly thin XO-3 concept tablet for 2012
Still have a bit of faith left for the OLPC project? Good, you're gonna need it: designer Yves Behar has unveiled his latest concept design for the now-aiming-for-$75 vision, and it's all screen. Keeping with the newfound trend toward tablets, the XO-3 is an 8.5 x 11 touchscreen, coupled with a little folding ring in the corner for grip and a camera in the back. To keep things minimal the plan is to use Palm Pre-style induction charging, and less than a watt of power to keep an "8 gigaherz [sic]" (800MHz?) processor and a Pixel Qi screen powered. Unity Asset Server 2.0 offers improved speed, new tools
Unity Technologies has introduced an update to its Asset Server utility for version control. Version 2.0 allows users to host the server on Windows systems, extending support beyond just Mac OS X and Linux machines, while users can now utilize Debian-based Linux distributions. The update reduces the time required to check-in large changesets when used with Unity 2.6 or higher.

Rogers extends free tethering through May
Rogers sent word this afternoon that it would extend a promo offering free tethering on its data plans. Previously set to expire at the end of the year, the deal will now last through at least May 3rd of next year. The offer continues to apply to any Rogers or Fido smartphone data plan with at least 1GB of bandwidth, including the iPhone, Android devices and any other phone that allows sharing its 3G connection with a computer.

Brando begins deluge of anonymous USB 3.0 hard drive enclosures
Hey Brando! You're awesome for being your usual self -- $49 isn't too bad for this next-gen product (also the first USB 3.0 hard drive enclosure sans drive we've seen), and it doesn't burn our eyes either. Now, maybe those drive manufacturers can start sorting out those extortionate SSD prices? We've seen the numbers and not even the 7200rpm hard drives have made it over half the theoretical speed of USB 2.0, let alone reaching ten times that on 3.0. Magellan Premium Car Kit now available for pre-order
Navigation device and related peripherals maker Magellan has began offering its Premium Car Kit for the iPhone and iPod touch for pre-order, also announcing a ship date of January 7th for the device. The kit includes a windshield mount with a built-in GPS sensor of its own so that devices such as the original 2G iPhones and iPod Touch devices can also benefit from the navigation function. In 3G and 3GS models of the iPhone, the external GPS chip is said to improve the reception of the Apple devices.

According to new data released by Nielsen, the iPhone 3G was the most popular cell phone in the U.S. in 2009. Art Lebedev introduces 'Fleximus' camera concept
Well, it looks like Art Lebedev has more than the rather ingenious Transparentius concept in store for us today -- it's also introduced this so-called Fleximus concept for a flexible digital camera. Not exactly anything new there, per se, but Art Lebedev seems to be pitching this one specifically to photographers, not just folks that want to peek in hard-to-see places. To that end, the Fleximus comes equipped with a proper viewfinder on one end of camera, which can also be detached and replaced with a 3-inch LCD module (check it out after the break). Corsair offer TRIM for their SSD
A little behind the majority of its competitors (OCZ, Gskill, Intel…), Corsair has issued a firmware for its SSD containing the Samsung controller that brings the support of TRIM. To recall, it acts a SATA command that allows the computer to indicate to the disc controller the sectors to be completely erased so as to avoid the degradation of the performances that happens if the blocks of data are just flagged ready for deletion.Corsair played it ironical by saying that they preferred to take their time in order to issue an update without any defect, recalling the problems that Intel experienced at the time of the update of its X25-M G2.Alas, the TRIM is not supported by Mac OS X. Microsoft loses appeal, Office banned without update
Microsoft on Tuesday lost its appeal against a $290 million infringement verdict that threatens to remove Word and the Office suite from the market. The United States Court of Appeals has upheld a verdict that claims XML code in Word 2003 and 2007 violates patents developed by Toronto, Canada-based i4i for XML plugins. It also removes a temporary stay and would ban all sales of infringing copies of Word as of January 11th unless changes are made by Microsoft.

Unreal Engine 3 has been converted to run on iPhones and iPod touches, a recent demonstration reveals. Unreal 3 Engine auf iPhone und iPod Touch (mit Video)

Anandtech haben sich letzte Woche mit Mark Rein von Epic Games getroffen, der ihnen ein Demo der Unreal Engine 3 auf einem iPod Touch der dritten Generation gezeigt hat. Unter anderem war sogar schon ein ganzer Level von Unreal Tournament spielbar. Mit einem virtuellen Joystick auf der linken Bildschirmseite kontrolliert man die Bewegungen, rechts unten die Kamera, geballert wird mit Tappen. Momentan ist es nur eine Art Testumgebung, mit der Epic verschiedene Steuerungen ausprobieren will. Die Unreal 3 Engine wird unter anderem neben Unreal Tournament 3 in Games wie Bioshock und Gears of War eingesetzt. Modder mods new fangled wireless keyboard to look like old timey one
Before you laugh awkwardly at the weird sense of nostalgia this keyboard dredges up in your mind, let us introduce you to its wonders. Apparently modded by a Dutch man or woman courageous enough to admit that (like us) they prefer the pretty much extinct, giant, tactile-as-all-get out keyboards to newer, more streamlined models, this mod takes away the only gripe we ever had with such peripherals -- namely, their wiredness. The enterprising DIYer's taken a Logitech wireless Wii keyboard apart, mapping all the key codes along the way, thrown in a little basic soldering, wedged everything into the old keyboard and voila!

USB Hourglass flips itself, generating random numbers in the process
This is such a bizarre combination of the old and the new that at least a few of our geekiest readers are sure to get a kick out of it. The USB Hourglass is essentially an egg timer equipped with an optical beam for keeping an eye on sand levels and a rotating mechanism for flipping the thing when all the sand has landed at the bottom. But that ain't all! The observed light levels are sent to a host PC (via USB, which also supplies power) where any of your favorite open source tools can use it to generate random numbers. Sekai Camera tags augmented reality for iPhones
Japanese developer Tonchidot has released an international version of Sekai Camera, a formerly Japanese-only social networking app. The title lets iPhone owners mark the locations they travel to with audio, photos and text messages; users must be nearby to see a given tag. Unique is the ability to see content through augmented reality, which presents itself as tappable icons over live video.

Epic shows off Unreal Engine 3 running on iPhone / iPod touch
There's certainly plenty of good looking iPhone games available these days, but things could be about to get quite a bit more interesting, as Epic has now demonstrated its Unreal Engine 3 (the same one used for games like Gears of War 2) running on the iPhone 3GS and 3rd gen iPod touch. Unfortunately, it hasn't also announced any games or licensees that will be using the engine, but it seems like it has at least managed to get it running remarkably well on the hardware -- albeit in a somewhat limited demo, as you can see in the video after the break. What's more, Epic also reportedly said that it would be showing off the engine running on "another mobile platform entirely" at CES next month, but didn't drop any further hints besides that.

iPhone 3G most used phone in the US for 2009
The iPhone 3G was the most frequently used phone for going online for nearly all of the year, the researchers at Nielsen report. About 4 percent of all US active cellphone owners used Apple's 2008 smartphone to get online between January and October. Its results were helped both by the iPhone 3G having sold by itself for the first half of the year and continuing on as a $99 model after the iPhone 3GS became available in June.

Broadcom-Chip soll Intels neue Atom-Plattform HD-fähig machen
Broadcom hat einen Chip angekündigt, der HD-Videos auf Netbooks mit Intels neuer Atom-Plattform "Pine Trail" ermöglichen soll. Intels Director für Netbook-Marketing Anil Nanduri bestätigt, dass Intel diesen Chip "validiert" habe. Dell pulls ads from Jersey Shore, calls show 'derogatony' (video)
Its seems that casual TV viewers and large corporations handle Schadenfreude very differently. While MTV's Jersey Shore has been a constant source of amusement for at least one Engadget editor, TMZ (our other favorite tech site) reports that Dell has joined a growing list of advertisers that are backing away from the reality series. In fact, a company spokesman (with a less jaded view of humanity than us) has gone on record stating that Dell doesn't "condone or support ethnic bashing in any form." Firmware-Update für 27" iMac Grafikkarte ist da
In der vergangenen Nacht hat Apple eine neue Firmware für die Grafikkarten des neuen 27 "iMac bereit gestellt. Diese soll die Grafikprobleme beheben, die immer wieder aufgetaucht sind. Betroffen sind iMacs mit ATI Radeon HD 4670 und auch mit ATI Radeon HD 4850. Seit der Auslieferung ist es immer wieder zu Flackern, Verzerrungen und auch Verfärbungen im neuen 27" iMac gekommen. Mit dem 27-inch iMac Graphics Firmware Update 1.0 sollen diese Probleme der Vergangenheit angehören. Ob das wirklich so ist wird sich in den nächsten Tagen zeigen. Das Update kann über die Softwareaktualisierung oder direkt bei Apple herunter geladen werden.

In der Star Walk Live App gab es nun auch zur Vorweihnachtszeit noch ein paar schöne Änderungen. Neu z. Heftige Kritik an geplanter Tagesschau-App
Auch die Tagesschau plant eine eigene App auf den Markt zu bringen. Dies wird jedoch von heftiger Kritik begleitet; finanziert sich die App der Tagesschau doch durch Einnahmen aus öffentlichen Rundfunkgebühren und liegt nach Einschätzung vieler nicht im Interesse der Gebührenzahler.
Noch brisanter wird das Ganze mit der Ankündigung die Tagesschau-App kostenlos zur Verfügung zu stellen.

Angespielt: Appstore-Kuriositäten: NES-Emulator Nescaline ist erschienen (Retro)
In der Vorfreude auf Weihnachten scheint ein Appstore-Reviewer geschlafen zu haben. Anders ist es nicht zu erklären, dass Nescaline es in den AppStore geschafft hat. Das Spiel ist ein vollwertiger NES-Emulator. Er unterstützt jegliche NES-ROMs (wiki-link einfügen), kann im Portrait- als auch Landscape-Modus benutzt werden und man hat auch die Möglichkeit Spiele zu speichern. Die Touch-Controls sind in Ordnung, vor allen Dingen im Landscape-Modus. Etwas irritierend ist, dass man aus dem Landscape- in den Portrait-Modus wechseln muss, um Spiele beenden und damit speichern zu können.

Fuji Soft bringt humanoiden Bot mit Atom-Prozessor und Ubuntu-OS

Fuji Soft hat im Rahmene des All Japan Robot Tournament seinen ersten humanoiden Roboter vorgestellt, der regulär in die Läden kommen soll und zwar Anfang 2010 zu einem "leistbaren Preis", was auch immer das heißen mag. Einen Namen haben die knuffigen Bots noch nicht, aber immerhin verriet Fuji Soft schon mal die Eckpunkte der Specs: Die Bots sind knapp 40 cm groß, sie wiegen 1,56 Kilogramm, beherrschen diverse LED-Gesichter und haben einen Atom-Prozessor mit 1,6 GHz unter der Haube. Die Fuji-Bots werden zudem unter der Linux-Distribution Ubuntu laufen und sollen nicht zuletzt Gesichts- und Spracherkennung drauf haben.

Fujitsus Netbook MH380 mit Intels Pine Trail und Scroll-Wheel

Intels Netbook-Plattform Pine Trail wird im Januar auf der CES 2010 ihren großen Auftritt haben, denn das Atom-basierte Hybrid-Konzept (Prozessor, Grafik und Speicherverwaltung in einem Chip) ist inzwischen auf der Produktebene gelandet. Nach dem Wind U135 und dem Wind U130 wird es zur CES das komplett runderneuerte 10-Zoll Netbook MSI Wind U160 geben, das dritte von MSI mit dem neuen Pine Trail aka N450 Atom. Will Apple and Microsoft join together to fight Google?
Even a year ago, most would have scoffed at the idea of Apple having to partner with Microsoft to fight off Google. Google and Apple even shared two Directors, including Google CEO, Eric Schmidt. Microsoft, on the other hand, has been Apple's traditional rival since Windows was released two decades ago.

Hurry up and download an NES emulator that slipped into the App Store
Update: It has been pulled, you'll have to jailbreak to get an NES emulator now.
We're not sure how this one slipped through, but Nescaline, a Nintendo Entertainment System emulator is in the App Store as we speak. Yes, Apple has prohibited emulators in the past as a security measure although it did eventually approve a Commodore64 emulator. BBC plan for TV online sees an Apple TV set-top box for IPTV
Rest assured: TV broadcasters are serious about taking themselves online: YouTube now offers TV shows through its service; Apple is speaking to the networks with a view to offering TV subscription shows streamed over the internet via iTunes; and the BBC has received approval for its plan to create a platform for Internet TV broadcasting.
This could be a blow to cable and satellite TV companies by making much of the content they keep behind their paid-for wall more easily available through other media. Increasingly, it’s not the entertainment on offer which differentiates these services, but the power, accessibility and robustness of the network carrying the fun.

iPhone price wars begin - massive discounts hit France...
France is Europe’s healthiest iPhone market because the device has been sold there by multiple carriers, driving sales higher - now carriers there are slashing prices on the product, applying steep discounts against the regular price.
Bernstein Research recently claimed over 600,000 iPhones were sold during Q3 2009 in France alone by dint of this non-exclusive strategy. With that kind of saturation, carriers know it’s time for a price cut, particularly as expectation of a new model iPhone continues to grow.
With this in mind, French mobile operators Orange and SFR have reduced the price of some iPhone models.

Nokia N900 and the case of the best unboxing ever
We'll just come out and say it: this is so awesome. In fact, if you want to just take our word for it, skip the copy and head straight to the video after the break -- you really only need to watch the first four or so minutes Still here? Alright then. Fuji Soft's new humanoid is powered by Atom and Ubuntu
The world needs humanoids, and Fuji Soft is heeding that call. It just unveiled its new humanoid line at the ever-popular All Japan Robot Tournament, and while the robot doesn't have a model name yet, one of the delightful personalities pictured above is named Sakura-Chan and both seem pretty keen on a bit of robo-Sumo. The mobility and capabilities of the bots seems pretty standard, with an LED visor for facial expressions, speech recognition and a camera for taking in this odd carbon-based world it finds itself in. MSI Wind U160 confirmed for CES, but we've got your first look right now
On the heels of getting our hands on the budget, Pine Trail-packing Wind U135, MSI gave us a heads up that at CES it'll be releasing the totally redesigned 10-inch Wind U160. The pictures make it look ever so trim and classy, though we can't help but notice the chassis' uncanny resemblance to the Toshiba Mini NB205. Another Google Nexus One sighting, this time a wee bit more clear
How a phone given to thousands of employees still manages to be nothing more than an occasional blip on the internets continues to boggle our mind. This latest Nexus One / "Google Phone" sighting comes care of two Twitter chatters -- @djrobrob and the less protected account of @phillm. Sony Reader Daily Edition starts shipping, gets more newspapers
Sony hedged its bets a bit in committing to ship date for its Reader Daily Edition when it first announced it, but it looks like it's managed to get the first ones out the door on the early end of its December 18th to January 8th estimate, with the initial batch of pre-orders shipping today. Unfortunately, anyone that didn't pre-order the e-reader is out of luck for the time being, as it's now back-ordered with a new estimated ship date of January 15th. Diffus pollution dress is turned on by CO2, prefers a clean environment
We've seen LED-laced dresses before -- though sometimes we'd rather we hadn't -- but this one here is almost refined enough for us to consider wearing. Nokia's Kamppi Trial succeeds at indoor positioning, gets shelved anyway (video)
Sure, GPS can get you to the mall, but can it route you from the Bon Ton down to Penney's? Not so much. Indoor navigation is still generally a paper map reliant affair, something Nokia attempted to do away with at the Kamppi Shopping Center in Helsinki. Magellan: Details zur GPS-Halterung für den iPod touch und das iPhone

AT&T lands surprise win in 3G test
AT&T tonight landed an unusual victory in a cross-country network test. Samsung NX10 spotted, lacks SLR mirror
Samsung's first camera with removable lenses has been seen in supposedly production-ready trim thanks to a forum leak late Sunday. It should now be called the NX10 in its final guise and is now known for certain to be closer to point-and-shoot cameras as it lacks the mirror system that would be needed for an SLR. It's thought the camera is using a Samsung-developed system rather than using another mirrorless system like Micro Four Thirds.

CBS, Disney ready for iTunes TV subscriptions?
Apple may have two studios lined up for its proposed iTunes TV subscription plan ahead of a winter tablet lanch, sources claim Monday night. Where before the rumored service had merely been proposed to studios, anonymous tips now suggest that CBS and Disney are at least "considering" signing onboard. More than half of 2010 Acer phones to use Android
More than half of the 8 to 10 smartphones planned by Acer for the coming year will run Android and not Windows Mobile, a leak claims today. The company has officially said only that the mix will be more "balanced" towards Android versus the just one phone for 2009, but Taiwan phone industry contacts tell DigiTimes that just over half of these are likely to run Google's platform. At least three will be entry-level models that still support 3G, but others will run Qualcomm's fast Snapdragon processors.

Ableton posts two free audio Live Packs
Ableton has released two free Live Packs as a holiday promotion. The software expands the number of samples in the company's Live 8 production suite, primarily in terms of drum and beat-oriented samples from drummer K.J. Sawka. The first pack, Mad Beatz, is intended for drum-and-bass, dubstep and breakbeat tracks. Aside from live drum recordings, it includes electronic percussion, basslines and keyboards.

Netbooks hurt whole notebook industry in 2009
The rise of netbooks has almost uniformly damaged the entire notebook industry's performance this year, a new DisplaySearch study shows. While shipments of notebooks more than doubled to 33.3 million, their lower prices actually dragged down revenue for the entire notebook industry by 12 percent to about $109.4 million. The revenue for netbooks themselves was also disproportionately lower and increased a relatively soft 72 percent.

A federal judge in New York has dismissed a class action lawsuit against Apple, reports say. PopCap veröffentlicht Top-Games auf deutsch
