January 26th - Tablet Tuesday?
If the Financial Times is right, we might have only one month to wait until "Tablet Tuesday". They report:
Apple has something big up its sleeve for next month. The company has rented a stage at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco for several days in late January, according to people familiar with the plans. Apple is expected to use the venue to make a major product announcement on Tuesday, January 26th. Both YBCA and Apple declined to comment.
Remember, Apple turned down Macworld Expo 2010 which is usually scheduled for a week or so before this event. Instead, Macworld moved

FCC commish says Verizon's ETF response is 'unsatisfying and, in some cases, troubling'
A member of the FCC's five-person commission, Mignon Clyburn, has sent out a letter today in response to Verizon's earlier reply regarding questions surrounding its gargantuan $350 early termination fee on so-called "advanced devices," and in brief, it looks like this issue is far from tied off. Her choicest quote is that she found Verizon's answers "unsatisfying and, in some cases, troubling," noting that customers are already paying "high" monthly fees and suggesting that the public interest isn't being served when someone gets slammed with a three-digit cancellation charge mid-contract. Econ converts three software titles into freeware
Econ Technologies has made three of its existing programs freeware, citing a desire to concentrate on sync and backup software in the future. Free offerings begin with Portraits & Prints, which relies on a template dynamic to handle photo printing. Images are added to a catalog, where they can then be tweaked and attached to a template before print or export.

In brief: MacTech is celebrating its 25th anniversary and extending a special discount to new and existing subscribers. The magazine is also looking for stories and memories from its community, to publish in an upcoming issue. iFixit has meanwhile announced that all of its repair manuals will now be offered for free. Nexus One test: faster, better screen than iPhone
Google's Nexus One phone has been given a detailed if early test today that suggests it may be the definitive Android device. The hands-on at Gizmodo notes that the combination of Android 2.1 and the 1GHz Snapdragon processor makes it faster than not only the Motorola Droid but also the iPhone 3GS, particularly on the web. While the iPhone's Safari browser remains faster at JavaScript, the Nexus One is on average "a few seconds" faster than Apple's device with the same connection.

Nook shipping update assures pre-orders arriving on time
This should come as a relief to all you anxiously awaiting your Barnes and Noble Nook pre-orders. We've received a statement from Barnes and Noble affirming that all pre-orders which had an original pre-holiday ship date will be fulfilled, and that the rest of the orders will be filled starting in Friday. Here's the full, reassuring statement:
"We're happy to report that all customers who pre-ordered nooks and were given a pre-holiday estimated shipping date will be sent their nooks in time to receive them by Christmas. baKno releases Solitaire with 3D card sets, tables
baKno Games has launched baKno Solitaire for the Mac. The game features five handcrafted card sets in a 3D presentation. Rulesets include the likes of Klondike, Freecell, Spider, Cruel and Canfield. Analyst: Tablet rumors mean Apple stock is undervalued
Apple stock is likely undervalued at the moment, contends Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster. Current models of share performance are said to be ignoring the Apple tablet, which is increasingly rumored to be launching in early 2010, possibly as soon as January. Munster suggests that there is at least a 50 percent chance of the tablet being unveiled next month, and a 75 percent chance of some sort of Apple event.

Apple recruiting developers to demo tablet in January?
Rumors of an Apple tablet in January gained fuel again today with a rumor elaborating on the company's supposed plans. A "plugged-in" contact for SAI says Apple has been asking some developers to prepare apps that could be demonstrated on a larger handheld device next month. It's not clear whether these are ports, though coders are being told that iPhone apps will work properly as long as they're not coded for a fixed size, clearly indicating a screen resolution higher than 480x320.

Asus Eee PC T101MT revealed by the FCC
Asus' Eee PC T101 convertible tablet has been floating around in one form or another for quite a while now, but it looks like it's now finally cleared the FCC as the Eee PC T101MT, which seems to suggest that it might just be getting official at CES next month. Developers being asked to ready apps for full screen(tablet?) mode
According to Silicon Alley Insider, Apple has asked a few select developers to ready a full screen mode of their apps for a demo next month. Obviously with all of the tablet chatter and specifically the Financial Times' report yesterday of a January announcement, it would seem to indicate this would be for a tablet, thought AppleTV could also be the recipient of an app store full screen app.

Apple planning event for January, with high-res iPhone or small-sized tablet in tow? Maybe just hanging out?
Breaking news, everybody: Apple's working on some stuff. The rumors are flying in all directions today, starting out fairly innocently with word from the oft-innacurate DigiTimes of an iPhone-destined 5 megapixel camera sensor. Piper Jaffray's Gene Munster piled on with an investor note saying they're giving an Apple January event a 75% chance of happening, and the tablet is squarely at 50 / 50. The most interesting word, however, comes out of the Silicon Alley Insider, who is quoting a "plugged-in source in the mobile industry" who says that Apple is working with some select app makers on prepping high-res apps to demo on a "new, larger mobile device." Best Western has released its first iPhone app, Best Western to Go. The software mainly lets users locate one of the company's 4,000-plus hotels, and then make reservations. Users can also create itineraries, inserting addresses for various points of interest such as restaurants. Current positioning is displayed via a built-in map.

TiVo, Sony and others to FCC: 'gateways' should replace CableCARD
All the comments to the FCC in response to the call for ideas to replace the failed CableCARD idea were due this week so we spent a little time reading a few of them and found some overwhelming trends. Everyone seems to applaud the death of CableCARD and is pushing for an end to the associated mandates as well as those related to 1394. Neither of these two ideas worked out as planned as is evident by the fact that most consumers don't use them. RIM blames massive service outage on newer Messenger versions
Diehard BlackBerry users often compare BlackBerry Messenger to a potent drug. And just like a drug, coming down from a BBM high can be rough -- so rough, in fact, that RIM's claiming that a couple recent releases are responsible for "an unanticipated database issue" that stone-cold knocked out data service for many of the world's subscribers yesterday. Laut Berichten des Wall Street Journal will Apple mit in den IPTV-Markt einsteigen. Offenbar arbeitet man derzeit daran CBS, Disney und eventuelle weitere Unternehmen als Partner für diesen Schritt zu gewinnen. Das Ganze soll auf Basis eines Abonnementensystems realisiert werden.

Gizmodo got to play with one and compare it to the iPhone and the Droid. The Nexus One is thinner and lighter than the iPhone with a faster processor and better screen according to Editor, Jason Chen. PS3 dipped in gold appeals to our 'elitist doofus' sensibilities

7-inch Apple tablet "definitely" coming in January?
Apple's heavily rumored tablet could come in a smaller size if a rumor today proves true. Referring to a source who has been "amazingly accurate" with previous Apple rumors, BGR supports notions of a January Apple event but says that the launch is "100%" likely to include a 7-inch tablet. Whether this would be in place of or in addition to the more commonly rumored 10-inch tablet isn't known by the tipster.

Magellan updates RoadMate for iPhone with Touch support
Magellan has updated RoadMate for the iPhone to v1.10, adding several new features. The app handles turn-by-turn navigation, with extra help in the form of voice guidance, lane directions and 3D landmarks. New in the update is support for the iPod touch, though only the second-generation player, rather than the first- or third-gen models. One of the big obstacles in alternative energy is that some of its primary gathering mechanisms -- solar, wind, reclaimed heat -- aren't continuously available, so no matter how much of a science lab you have bolted to your roof, you still might run out of TV electricity during a calm night's Curb Your Enthusiasm marathon. Microsoft evades Office ban with update for OEMs
Microsoft has acted quickly on its promise to keep Office on shelves by pushing an Office update to computer builders. The supplement, intended for an OEM (original equipment manufacturer) version of Office 2007 from October, removes the support for reading custom-generated XML within DOCX, DOCM and pure XML files. It should continue to open files with the code inside but will no longer show the code to comply with patent infringement claims.

USB-Sanduhr ist ein Zufallsgenerator

Der Tüftler A. Peter Allan hat eine USB-Sanduhr gebastelt, die gleichzeitig als Zufallsgenerator fungiert - klingt meilenweit draußen? Ist es auch, irgendwie, aber gleichzeitig eigentlich ganz einfach: Die Sanduhr bekommt ihren Strom per USB und misst auf die gute alte Sanduhrart die Zeit. 2 Minuten rinnt der Sand von oben nach unten, 2 Sekunden dauert die Drehung, dann rinnt wieder 2 Minuten lang der Sand. Dabei liefert der optische Sensor, der das Sandrinnen beobachtet, aber nicht nur zwei Werte (Sand rieselt, kein Sand rieselt) sondern eine lustige Zufallszahlenkette an Helligkeitsgraden und diese nutzt Allan als Zufallsgenerator, wahrscheinlich weil er ein Mathe-Nerd ist und daher Zufallszahlen, die von digitalen Maschinen erzeu

BBC plan for TV online sees an Apple TV set-top box for IPTV
Rest assured: TV broadcasters are serious about taking themselves online: YouTube now offers TV shows through its service; Apple is speaking to the networks with a view to offering TV subscription shows streamed over the internet via iTunes; and the BBC has received approval for its plan to create a platform for Internet TV broadcasting.
This could be a blow to cable and satellite TV companies by making much of the content they keep behind their paid-for wall more easily available through other media. Increasingly, it’s not the entertainment on offer which differentiates these services, but the power, accessibility and robustness of the network carrying the fun.

iPhone price wars begin - massive discounts hit France...
France is Europe’s healthiest iPhone market because the device has been sold there by multiple carriers, driving sales higher - now carriers there are slashing prices on the product, applying steep discounts against the regular price.
Bernstein Research recently claimed over 600,000 iPhones were sold during Q3 2009 in France alone by dint of this non-exclusive strategy. With that kind of saturation, carriers know it’s time for a price cut, particularly as expectation of a new model iPhone continues to grow.
With this in mind, French mobile operators Orange and SFR have reduced the price of some iPhone models.

Tablet event next month, launch in March?
The Financial Times today rehashed most of the WSJ piece from yesterday on Apple taking on the cable companies with possible streaming agreements from ABC and CBS. They took it one step further by saying that the tablet, which was mentioned in the WSJ piece, is coming VERY soon:
"Apple is preparing an announcement next month that many anticipate will be the official unveiling of its tablet, but the company has so far declined to confirm the existence of the device. Wall Street analysts expect mass production of an Apple tablet to begin as early as February."

Nielson data: Apple takes 4% of US cell phone market. That isn't much.
Notice that title is a bit different than what you are seeing around the Web? Everyone is giving this story an extremely positive slant towards Apple, but it just isn't so. Even in the PC marketplace, the Mac has more than 4% of the US market, yet everyone getting excited because Nielson is presenting their data in a way that makes Apple's iPhone the tops for 2009.
To start getting excited, you want to wait until the iPhone starts putting up numbers like iPod, which consistently surpasses 70% of the MP3 market.
First of all, they are counting the iPhone 3G and 3GS as one device. They are also counting the different configurations 8GB, 16GB, 32GB, etc

Microsoft loses XML patent case, Word, Office face 11 Jan ban
Proving that sometimes the law does have teeth, even when dealing with the biggest corporations, a US Judge yesterday denied a Microsoft appeal, offering a judgment which could see Word and Office removed from sale starting January 11.
Canadian developer i4i first sued Microsoft in 2007, accusing the US company of illegally using its XML editing technology in the popular Word software line. In May, a Texas jury said Microsoft violated i4i's patent, and ordered it to pay i4i nearly $300 million in damages.
Microsoft filed various appeals and won a six-month delay in execution of the order to remove Word and Office in their current forms from sale. Now the Court of Appeals has upheld that injunction.
The case is likely to head two ways at this point - an appeal to the US Supreme Court or a settlement (financial deal) between Microsoft and i4

Next-gen iPhone w/5 Megapixel Camera for second half 2010 - WWDC launch?
Taiwanese sources suggest the debut of an all-new model iPhone, equipped with a 5-megapixel camera, could coincide with the currently mooted WWDC 2010 event in June.
Industry sources report orders for OmniVision’s CMOS image senors as used inside the iPhone are set to more than double in 2010, anticipating 40-45 million units will ship next year, in contrast to the 20-21 million estimated to have shipped in 2009.

Patentstreit: Richter bestätigt Verkaufsstopp für Word
Ein US-Gericht hat Microsofts Berufungsantrag im Patentstreit mit dem kanadischen Unternehmen i4i abgelehnt. Laut dem Urteil hat der Softwareanbieter bis zum 11. BlackBerry outage ends after 8 hours, 100% affected
RIM's second BlackBerry outage in a week ended early Wednesday morning after approximately eight hours and after an explanation. The company in an e-mail statement believed that the issue was triggered by a bug in two recent versions of BlackBerry Messenger that triggered problems in RIM's database, triggering issues not just with the IM app but also the BlackBerry Internet Service as a whole. Phone owners had reported a lack of e-mail and even problems browsing the web.

Highlights from NYU's ITP winter show 2009
Our friends over at Adafruit Industries made their way over to NYU's ITP winter show 2009 recently, and they've blessed us with some highlights. ITP shows are always interesting and worth a walk through, and this is one show we regret missing this time around. The fridgebuzz MK1 protoype alone is enough to snag our hearts -- a MIDI controller with 32 LED button switches and six copper switches, all in a super attractive package. The Super Duper cubes go beyond their ridiculous name, and operate as an interface to control video and music, with each cube boasting a gyroscope, accelerometor, battery, and wireless communication, so that the cubes can be turned (no wires!). Das haben sich die Designer der Gruppe Diffus fein ausgedacht: Ein Kleid mit aufgestickten LEDs und CO2-Sensor, das den aktuellen CO2-Wert mittels Lichtshow visualisiert. Hört sich natürlich erstmal wahnsinnig grün und Klima-bewusst an, ist aber leider Schwachsinn, denn die CO2-Konzentration im Raum steht erstmal in keinerlei Zusammenhang mit dem Klimawandel. Und dass man Räume, in denen Menschen beim Atmen die CO2-Konzentration leicht erhöhen, lüften sollte, merkt man wohl auch ohne Sensor-Technik.[via

Rumors that Amazon might buy Netflix sparked brief but sharp spikes in shares of both companies yesterday. While the sources of the rumor aren't known, talk of an acquisition was allegedly sparked by Apple's supposed iTunes TV subscription plans and their potential impact on both companies. Nach Informationen des Branchen-Portals Digitimes, könnte die 4. iPhone-Generation mit einem 5-Megapixel Kameramodul ausgestattet werden. Einer ungenannten Quelle nach, soll der Kamera-Hersteller “OmniVision Technologies” eine entsprechende Order erhalten haben und dürfte im Laufe des nächsten Jahres 40 bis 45 Millionen Einheiten produzieren. The next iPhone will get an upgrade to a 5-megapixel camera, sources said on Wednesday. OmniVision, Apple's current supplier for the 3.2-megapixel camera in the iPhone 3GS, has reportedly been given orders for its second sensor upgrade in a year with expectation that an iPhone using the higher resolution will ship in the second half of 2010. Next-gen iPhone for second half 2010 - WWDC launch?
Taiwanese sources suggest the debut of an all-new model iPhone, equipped with a 5-megapixel camera, could coincide with the currently mooted WWDC 2010 event in June.
Industry sources report orders for OmniVision’s CMOS image senors as used inside the iPhone are set to more than double in 2010, anticipating 40-45 million units will ship next year, in contrast to the 20-21 million estimated to have shipped in 2009.

Microsoft loses XML patent case, Word, Office face 11 Jan ban
Proving that sometimes the law does have teeth, even when dealing with the biggest corporations, a US Judge yesterday denied a Microsoft appeal, offering a judgment which could see Word and Office removed from sale starting January 11.
Canadian developer i4i first sued Microsoft in 2007, accusing the US company of illegally using its XML editing technology in the popular Word software line. In May, a Texas jury said Microsoft violated i4i's patent, and ordered it to pay i4i nearly $300 million in damages.
Microsoft filed various appeals and won a six-month delay in execution of the order to remove Word and Office in their current forms from sale. Now the Court of Appeals has upheld that injunction.
The case is likely to head two ways at this point - an appeal to the US Supreme Court or a settlement (financial deal) between Microsoft and i4

Bericht: FBI untersucht Cyberangriff auf Citibank

The result for him was what's known as Limbal Stem Cell Deficiency, which caused him great pain, the need for therapeutic treatment, and economic dependency. Neue Songbird-Version kann CDs rippen
Der freie Audioplayer Songbird ist in einer neuen Hauptversion veröffentlicht worden. Die Macher haben in Songbird 1.4.1 noch einen Programmfehler gefunden und daher gleich die Version 1.4.2 nachgeschoben. Mit der 1.4er Version lernt der Audioplayer das Rippen von Musik-CDs und er kann per MSC-Unterstützung direkt auf entsprechende Geräte zugreifen. (Browser)

Klage wegen angeblich defekter Displays beim iMac G5 abgewiesen
Es ist inzwischen schon einige Jahre her, dass Berichte über angeblich regelmäßig auftauchende Display-Defekte beim iMac G5 die Runde machten. Dieser Umstand sorgte für eine Klage gegen Apple, eingereicht allerdings erst Ende 2008. In der Klagebegründung war zu lesen, dass Apple zwar der Defekt bekannt sei, man das Gerät dennoch unverändert weiterverkauft habe. Gerüchte um Apple-Produktvorstellung im Januar
Im Januar 2009 fand die Macworld Expo in San Francisco das letzte Mal mit offizieller Beteiligung Apples statt. Damit starb nicht nur eine alte Tradition, sondern ein Fixtermin für Produktneuvorstellungen - auf der Eröffnungsveranstaltung zur Messe wurden alljährlich die wichtigsten Apple-Neuheiten vorgestellt bzw. angekündigt, wir erinnern uns alle an die legendäre iPhone-Keynote von 2007.
Nun besteht Hoffnung, dass trotz Apples Messeausstieg wenigstens der Januar-Termin nicht sterben wird. Die Financial Times zitiert nicht näher genannte Quellen, nach denen sich Apple derzeit auf ein Produktankündigung nächsten Monat vorbereitet. Allerdings hatte die selbe Zeitung im Sommer bereits das Apple Tablet für vergangenen September angekündigt

US-Gericht weist Sammelklage wegen defekter iMac-Bildschirme ab
Ein Bundesgericht im kalifornischen San Jose hat einem Bericht von AppleInsider zufolge eine Sammelklage gegen Apple wegen defekter iMac-Bildschirme abgelehnt. Nielson data: Apple takes 4% of US cell phone market. That isn't much.
Notice that title is a bit different than what you are seeing around the Web? Everyone is giving this story an extremely positive slant towards Apple, but it just isn't so. Even in the PC marketplace, the Mac has more than 4% of the US market, yet everyone getting excited because Nielson is presenting their data in a way that makes Apple's iPhone the tops for 2009.
To start getting excited, you want to wait until the iPhone starts putting up numbers like iPod, which consistently surpasses 70% of the MP3 market.

The Financial Times today rehashed most of the WSJ piece from yesterday on Apple taking on the cable companies with possible streaming agreements from ABC and CBS. They took it one step further by saying that the tablet, which was mentioned in the WSJ piece, is coming VERY soon:

MemoryMiner 2.0 adds new Maplines view, QuickTime support
GroupSmarts has announced a major upgrade to its Mac-based digital storytelling utility, MemoryMiner 2.0. The app allows users to create digital stores which link audio, video, pictures or other media. Version 2 offers a new Maplines view, support for Reverse Geocoding, and a new Ken Burns-style pan and zoom effect available through every selection marker. Support is also offered for recording video or audio annotations with QuickTime=compatible devices or the integrated iSight camera.

NVIDIA Ion 2 coming in early 2010, compatible with Pine Trail
Well, here we go: NVIDIA just gave us the heads-up that its next-gen of Ion (which we'll be calling Ion 2 until it gets a proper name) will be Pine Trail-compatible and arriving in Q1 of 2010. That's good news, seeing as the Pine Trail-based Eee PC 1005PE we just reviewed didn't offer much of a performance benefit over the older Diamondville chips and definitely couldn't bust through the first few seconds of a YouTube HD clip. Though we got NVIDIA to confirm that it'll improve some of the battery life concerns we've had, we couldn't get much out of them in terms of how Ion 2 will play with the Intel GMA 3

OPTi files cross-appeal in lawsuit against Apple
OPTi has announced plans to file a cross-appeal in its patent infringement lawsuit against Apple. Although the judge already awarded the plaintiff $21.7 million in damages, the court did not view Apple's infringement as willful. OPTi was therefore denied its request for enhanced damages, which could have been much higher due to provisions for attorneys' fees and other considerations.

ASUS Eee Pad rumored to have multitouch, Tegra
Details on ASUS's rumored Eee Pad were fairly light when the rumors first surfaced, but it looks like things are now starting to get fleshed out a bit more as we near a possible announcement at CES next month. The latest word comes from Netbooknews' sources, who have reportedly all but confirmed that the tablet / handheld will indeed have full multitouch capabilities, and that it definitely won't be running Windows CE (still no word what it will be running). Slightly less certain but more interesting is talk that the Eee Pad will run on NVIDIA's Tegra platform -- or, possibly, Tegra 2, which just so happens to be

Office for Mac to get Messenger A/V support in March
Microsoft has announced that Office for Mac is set to get beta support for A/V content in Messenger for personal users. The company's Mojo blogger Eric Wilfrid admits that the project is running late, as the added functionality was originally expected to be offered as a beta by the end of 2009. Apple planning January news with tablet in store?
Apple is planning an unveiling in January for an unspecified product, a rumor asserted Tuesday evening. As part of a leak whose sources back reports of an iTunes TV subscription plan, the Financial Times claims that Apple is "preparing an announcement" for next month. BlackBerries hit by third major outage
BlackBerry users this afternoon have reported another outage affecting the smartphone platform's BlackBerry Information Service. The failures appear broader than the primarily mail-related delays from just last week and now also affect web browsing, BlackBerry Messenger and third-party apps that use Internet access. RIM has been contacted by Electronista for commentary but hasn't yet had the opportunity to respond.
